The cars that last are particular model years, not whole nameplates. The complaint record names the quiet years within each badge — the ones drawing fewer owner filings than their neighbours — and warns that the youngest years look quiet only because their record is not written yet.

## “Best” is a model year, not a badge

The largest error in used-car shopping folklore is judging at the level of the nameplate. Nameplates span generations, factories, engines and redesign gambles; the record shows the same badge swinging from troubled to serene across adjacent years. Totals rise with sales volume and with years on the road, which is why no number below is compared across models — a best-selling truck will out-complain a modest wagon on volume alone. **Do not compare rows against each other.** The F-150’s quiet year out-complains the 4Runner’s because vastly more F-150s exist, not because it is a worse candidate.
