# Land Rover Certified Pre-Owned: The 165 Checks and the Warranty Clock

> Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned: under 5 years and 60,000 miles, 165 checks, then 1 year unlimited or 2 years/100,000 miles after the factory warranty.

## The short version

- Land Rover’s US program is called Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned. A car must be under 5 years old and under 60,000 miles and pass a 165-point inspection, and Land Rover’s brochure prints all 165 points.
- The certified warranty comes in two versions: 1 year with unlimited miles, or 2 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Land Rover doesn’t say which cars get which.
- It starts when the car’s 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty ends, not on the day you buy. The exception is a one-year-plan car sold between 48 and 60 months old, which starts on the sale date. By our arithmetic, neither plan runs past 6 years from the car’s first sale.
- Land Rover says certified repairs carry no deductible, roadside assistance runs as long as the warranty, and the warranty transfers to later private owners. It ends if the car is sold to a dealer that isn’t a Land Rover franchise.
- No certified warranty booklet or contract is public. What it covers exists only as one sentence about “sudden and unexpected mechanical or electrical failure”, so get the written terms from the retailer.
- Of the 165 points, 10 are paperwork questions and 37 apply only if the car has the feature (our count). Ask for the car’s completed checklist, check open recalls by VIN, and get the warranty’s start and end on paper.

Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned is Land Rover’s own used-car program in the United States. A Land Rover under 5 years old with fewer than 60,000 miles passes a 165-point inspection at a Land Rover retailer, then carries a limited warranty of either 1 year with unlimited miles or 2 years/100,000 miles, which begins when the 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty ends. This guide is built from landroverusa.com’s [certified program page](https://www.landroverusa.com/certified-pre-owned/index.html), its [warranty and certification page](https://www.landroverusa.com/certified-pre-owned/warranty-certification.html), its certified offers page, the 2022 Approved Certified Pre-Owned brochure both pages link, and landroverusa.com’s warranty, recall and terms pages, all read on 5 October 2026.

Our count; the sections add up to the 165 points Land Rover prints. 10 are paperwork questions and 37 apply only if the car has the feature.

## What Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned includes

The program belongs to Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC, Land Rover’s US distributor, and Land Rover retailers sell it. The brochure says certified cars are “fully endorsed by a professional Land Rover Technician, your Land Rover Retailer, and Land Rover North America, LLC.”

The names matter when you read paperwork. The program is “Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned”. The warranty is the “Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty” in the footnotes and brochure, and the “Land Rover Approved Certified Limited Warranty” in the pages’ body text. Here is what the program page, the warranty page and the brochure promise, and what they leave out:

**What Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned includes, from landroverusa.com’s certified pages and the 2022 brochure they link, read on 5 October 2026.**

| Item | What Land Rover says | What it doesn’t say |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who qualifies | Under 5 years from first retail sale, fewer than 60,000 miles “calculated from zero miles” | Any model or trim exclusions |
| Inspection | 165 points, printed in full in the brochure; “All vehicles have to pass all 165 checks” | Measurements for most items |
| Certified warranty | 1 year/unlimited miles, or 2 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first | Which cars get which plan |
| When it starts | When the New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires; on the sale date for one-year-plan cars sold at 48 to 60 months | A worked example, or the rule when the factory warranty ran out early on mileage |
| What it covers | “sudden and unexpected mechanical or electrical failure”, genuine parts, Land Rover-trained technicians | A parts list, exclusions, or a booklet |
| Deductible | “absolutely no deductible whatsoever” | Nothing; it is stated plainly |
| Roadside assistance | 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for the length of the warranty | Any limit on calls or towing distance |
| Trip interruption | Reimbursement for “lodging, transportation and other necessary expenses” after a warrantable breakdown | Any daily or total cap |
| Transfer | To later private owners; terminated if the car is sold to a non-Land Rover franchise retailer | Any transfer fee |
| History report | “You’re entitled to a history report” | Which provider |
| Price | Nothing | Any price or charge for certification |

Land Rover’s pages describe no tiers of certification and no separate rules for plug-in hybrids. The two warranty plans are the only split, and the pages don’t explain it.

## Which Land Rovers qualify: under 5 years and 60,000 miles

To be certified, the brochure says, a vehicle “Must be no more than five years old from its first retail sale” and “Must have accrued fewer than 60,000 miles on the odometer, calculated from zero miles.” The program page prints the same limits as tiles (“less than” 60,000 miles, “less than” 5 years old) and says Land Rover hand-selects cars “from the previous five models years”. “Less than” and “no more than” differ only for a car certified on the day it turns 5.

Age runs from the car’s first sale, not its model year. The brochure says the limit is “Calculated from the original new-vehicle sale date”, and in the same footnote defines the original in-service date, which the warranty clock uses, as “the earlier of new-vehicle retail sale or in-use date”. A car that went into use before its first retail sale, such as a demonstrator, has the earlier date. Ask for both dates: they decide eligibility and when the warranty ends.

The first eight lines of Land Rover’s checklist are eligibility questions, and a car must clear all of them:

1. “Was the vehicle built for sale in the US?”
2. “Does vehicle meet age, model year and mileage eligibility?”
3. “Has the vehicle passed an independent Vehicle History and independent Mileage Check?”
4. “Is the vehicle free from any warranty restrictions?”
5. “Is the vehicle free from current or evidence of non Land Rover approved aftermarket modifications?”
6. “Does the vehicle have a complete service history?”
7. “Does the windshield VIN plate number match the VIN number information on A/B pillar/driver’s door area?”
8. “Have all outstanding Recalls and Service Campaigns been satisfied?”

A Land Rover built for another market fails question 1. A Defender with non-approved aftermarket suspension fails question 5, and so does one showing “evidence” of modifications since removed. A gap in the service record fails question 6, so a car serviced at an independent shop needs its receipts. Land Rover doesn’t say which history findings fail question 3 or which “warranty restrictions” fail question 4. If the history report shows a branded title, such as salvage or rebuilt, ask how the car passed both; our guide to [what a salvage title means](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/what-is-a-salvage-title/) explains the brands.

Faults found must be fixed first: the brochure says the car “Must have any detected deficiencies corrected by a Land Rover Retailer using only genuine Land Rover parts.” It adds that every certified car “Will be backed with a vehicle history report”, without naming the provider.

Plug-in hybrids and electric models go through the same program. Two checklist items name them: item 29, “Stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) & BEV Battery OBD SoH” (the battery’s state of health), and item 112, “Frame/underbody/PHEV/BEV traction battery”. The certified inventory search lists seven model lines: Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Discovery, Discovery Sport and Defender.

## The 165-point inspection, section by section

Land Rover prints the whole checklist. The program page says there is “a checklist of 165 points of inspection in place that has to be followed to the letter”, that the inspection “always includes paintwork, interior, a complete engine preparation, road test and a final inspection before the vehicle is personally signed off by a Land Rover Technician”, and that “All vehicles have to pass all 165 checks”. Page 6 of the brochure lists every point under 13 headings. We counted them:

**Land Rover’s 165-point Approved Certified Pre-Owned checklist by section, as printed in the 2022 brochure linked from landroverusa.com on 5 October 2026. Item counts and conditional counts are ours.**

| Section | Items | Count | Only if fitted or applicable | Examples, as printed |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Vehicle eligibility | 1 to 8 | 8 | 0 | US-market build, history and mileage check, service history, recalls |
| Preliminary checks | 9 to 10 | 2 | 0 | Owner’s Manual, “All keys present and operational?” |
| Interior, general | 11 to 28 | 18 | 3 | Veneer, wood, leather and headliner; airbag system; seat belts; child safety door latches |
| Electrical tests | 29 to 55 | 27 | 7 | Stored trouble codes; warning lights; battery; cameras; tire pressure monitoring |
| Heating and air conditioning | 56 to 64 | 9 | 3 | Blower motor; outlet temperature; heated and cooled seats |
| Electrical tests, exterior | 65 to 75 | 11 | 2 | Headlights; brake stop lights; turn signals |
| Exterior, general | 76 to 90 | 15 | 3 | Body and paintwork; panel alignment; windshield (OEM box) |
| Luggage compartment | 91 to 96 | 6 | 1 | Tool kit; spare tire or repair kit; power tailgate |
| Engine area | 97 to 111 | 15 | 1 | Engine oil; coolant hoses; drive belts; wiring |
| Undercarriage and drivetrain | 112 to 132 | 21 | 4 | Traction battery; suspension; brake pads and rotors; tire tread |
| Tests, stationary | 133 to 139 | 7 | 0 | Hot/cold start; engine noises; fluid leaks |
| Tests, road | 140 to 164 | 25 | 13 | Air suspension; ABS braking; squeaks and rattles; Terrain Response |
| Tests, emissions | 165 | 1 | 0 | Emissions |

Three things stand out. First, 10 of the 165 points are paperwork: the eight eligibility questions plus the owner’s manual and keys, leaving 155 that involve looking at, measuring or driving the car (our count). Second, 37 points apply only to some cars: 34 are marked “IF EQUIPPED” and 3 “IF APPLICABLE” or “if applicable”. The road test is the most conditional section, with 13 of its 25 items depending on equipment, from air suspension to the two-speed transfer case. Third, the largest section is the electrical tests, at 27 items.

The checklist is a list of names, not pass marks. Only three items print a minimum:

- **Item 120, brake pads:** “Brake Pad Thickness (6 mm pad material min.)”
- **Item 121, brake rotors:** “Brake Rotor Thickness (rotors 50% of wear limit)” for steel rotors, and rotor weight for carbon ceramic ones.
- **Item 126, tires:** “Tire tread depths”, with a minimum of 5/32 inch or 4 mm.

Those minimums are what a certified car can be delivered with. A car can pass with as little as 6 mm of pad and 5/32 inch of tread, and the warranty’s “sudden and unexpected” wording does not obviously cover worn pads or tires. Ask for the actual readings.

**Figure: Annotated photograph**

Three numbered callouts over the photograph mark the tread, the sidewall and the wheel, with the tyre and brake minimums printed in Land Rover's certified checklist.

Land Rover's 2022 Approved Certified Pre-Owned brochure, linked from its certified pages on 5 October 2026, sets a minimum tread depth of 5/32 inch (4 mm) at checkpoint 126 (callout 1), checks tires for wear, matching sizes and brands, and speed rating at checkpoint 125 (callout 2), and requires 6 mm of brake pad material and rotors within 50% of their wear limit at checkpoints 120 and 121 (callout 3). The photograph is illustrative; the sidewall lettering has been softened.

The brochure singles out five checkpoints. Checkpoint 125, for example, is “Tire condition inspected for wear, matching sizes/brands, and speed rating”, so mismatched tires should not get through. The others are 12 (“Veneer/wood/leather/headliner inspected for proper condition”), 51 (rear-seat entertainment, if fitted), 65 (“Headlight operation and alignment checked”) and 142 (“Engine performance checked”).

Two items record facts rather than pass or fail. Item 10, “All keys present and operational?”, prints one box for “1 key” and one for “2 keys”; it does not say a certified car must have two. Ask which box is ticked before you agree a price. Items 82 and 83, the windshield and glass roof, each print a box marked “OEM”, for original-equipment glass.

The printed checklist is a blank form: it tells you what the technician looked at, not what they found. Ask for the completed checklist for this VIN, signed off as the program page describes. An independent inspection is still worth considering on a car this complex; our [pre-purchase inspection guide](https://baronauto1.com/buying-guides/used-car-pre-purchase-inspection/) covers what one checks.

## The certified warranty: 1 year unlimited, or 2 years and 100,000 miles

The program page says: “Under the Land Rover Approved Certified Limited Warranty, your Land Rover vehicle is covered for either one year/unlimited miles or two years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first.” The “whichever comes first” belongs to the two-year plan, which ends at its time limit or its mileage limit, whichever the car reaches first. The one-year plan has no mileage limit.

Land Rover does not say which cars get which plan. A footnote adds only that “Select vehicles may have the option for different warranty terms.” The 2022 brochure’s benefit icons show only the “ONE YEAR/UNLIMITED MILEAGE LIMITED WARRANTY”; the two-year plan appears in a footnote. The first question about any certified Land Rover is which plan it carries, and the answer belongs on the buyer’s order.

What the warranty covers is one sentence: “Using only Land Rover Genuine Parts, this limited warranty covers repairs for sudden and unexpected mechanical or electrical failure, and work is only undertaken by Land Rover Trained Technicians.” No page we read lists covered components or exclusions. The brochure and both certified pages send buyers to a retailer “for complete terms and conditions of the limited warranty and service coverage”, and none links a booklet. We searched and found only the brochure and retailer pages repeating landroverusa.com’s wording.

Three more terms are stated plainly. The warranty “is added on top of the vehicle’s new car warranty”. “Any and all warrantable repairs covered under the Approved Certified Pre-Owned Program trigger absolutely no deductible whatsoever.” And “To maintain coverage under the Limited Warranty your vehicle must be serviced as recommended by Land Rover.”

landroverusa.com also serves a different set of terms. Its “Approved” page, written in UK English (“our Approved programme”, “a certified mile/km check”), promises “A 1 year Land Rover Approved warranty” and “12 months of 24/7 roadside assistance” after a 165-check inspection. Neither certified page links it, though the site map lists it with a September 2025 date. If a listing quotes “Land Rover Approved” terms, ask whether the car is sold as Approved Certified Pre-Owned and on which plan.

## When the warranty starts, and the case Land Rover’s pages skip

This is where a certified Land Rover is easiest to misread. The body text on both certified pages says “Coverage begins on the vehicle’s original in-service date and zero miles”. The footnotes, and the brochure, say: “The Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty, including Roadside Assistance benefits, begins when the Land Rover New-Vehicle Limited Warranty expires.” Then one exception: “For vehicles sold as certified between 48 and 60 months from the original in-service date with the one-year unlimited mileage plan, the Approved Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty begins from the contracted sale date”.

Our reading is that the in-service date and zero miles are where the clock and the odometer are counted from, and the factory warranty’s end is where certified cover begins. The factory warranty, landroverusa.com says, runs “for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.” No Land Rover page prints a worked example, so the following is our arithmetic, counting from the in-service date:

- **One-year plan, factory warranty still running at purchase:** the certified year starts when the factory warranty ends, at the latest 4 years in, so it ends no later than 5 years (60 months) in, with no mileage limit.
- **Two-year plan:** the two years start when the factory warranty ends, so they end no later than 6 years (72 months) in, or at 100,000 miles on the odometer, whichever comes first. If the 100,000 miles count from zero, as “zero miles” suggests, that is 50,000 miles past the factory warranty’s mileage limit, and a car certified just under the 60,000-mile limit has at most 40,000 miles of cover left.
- **One-year plan, car sold at 48 to 60 months:** the year starts on the sale date and runs 12 months, ending no later than 72 months in.

The exception window lines up with the program: 48 months is when the factory warranty ends by time, and 60 months is the age limit. Either way, by our arithmetic, both plans top out at 6 years from the in-service date.

**Land Rover’s pages give two starting points and one exception.** The body text says coverage “begins on the vehicle’s original in-service date and zero miles”; the footnotes say it “begins when the Land Rover New-Vehicle Limited Warranty expires”. Neither covers a car whose factory warranty ran out at 50,000 miles before it was 4 years old. Ask the retailer to write the plan, start date, end date and mileage limit on the buyer’s order.

Here is the clock on five hypothetical certified Land Rovers. These are our worked examples, not Land Rover figures; ages are counted from the in-service date:

**When certified cover ends on five hypothetical Land Rovers. Our arithmetic, applying the start rules in landroverusa.com’s certified footnotes and the brochure, read on 5 October 2026. End points are the latest possible: the factory warranty, and so the certified start, comes sooner if a car reaches 50,000 miles before 48 months.**

| Car at purchase | Plan | Certified cover starts | Certified cover ends | Cover ahead of you |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 12 months old | 2 years/100,000 miles | When the factory warranty ends: 48 months or 50,000 miles | 72 months or 100,000 miles, whichever first | Up to 60 months |
| 36 months, 30,000 miles | 2 years/100,000 miles | When the factory warranty ends: 48 months or 50,000 miles | 72 months or 100,000 miles, whichever first | Up to 36 months or 70,000 more miles, whichever first |
| 36 months, 30,000 miles | 1 year, unlimited miles | When the factory warranty ends: 48 months or 50,000 miles | No later than 60 months | Up to 24 months |
| 54 months, 45,000 miles | 1 year, unlimited miles | On the sale date | 66 months | 12 months |
| 40 months, 55,000 miles | Not stated | Land Rover doesn’t say | Land Rover doesn’t say | Ask before you sign |

The last row is the gap in Land Rover’s wording. That car is eligible, but its factory warranty ran out at 50,000 miles, before 48 months. The sale-date rule covers only one-year-plan cars sold at 48 to 60 months, so on the pages’ own words its certified cover would have begun before you bought it. Whether Land Rover starts it on the sale date instead, its pages don’t say.

## What the factory warranty still adds on a certified Land Rover

A certified Land Rover under 4 years and 50,000 miles still has part of its New Vehicle Limited Warranty, and Land Rover says the certified warranty is “added on top” of it. landroverusa.com’s warranty hub says: “Every new Land Rover vehicle is covered by a New Vehicle Limited Warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.” The hub prints no separate, longer powertrain term. Two factory terms can outlast the certified warranty:

- **Corrosion.** Each vehicle “carries a six-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion perforation warranty, plus various emissions warranties,” the hub says. Perforation means rust-through.
- **Plug-in hybrid battery.** Land Rover’s warranty and roadside page says: “we guarantee the traction battery in your plug-in electric hybrid for 8 years or 100,000 miles.” That is 8 years against the certified warranty’s 6-year ceiling, if both count from the in-service date; the page doesn’t say what its 8 years count from. On a certified plug-in hybrid, ask what the traction-battery check (item 112) found and when the battery warranty ends.

Roadside assistance follows the warranty. The hub says “All Land Rover vehicles still under warranty are covered by our exclusive Land Rover Roadside Assistance”, and the certified warranty begins “including Roadside Assistance benefits”. The full factory terms are in the Passport to Service section of the owner’s handbook, which the hub refers buyers to; ask for the car’s copy with the certified paperwork.

## Roadside help, trip interruption, accessories and finance offers

**Roadside assistance.** The program page says Land Rover will “provide emergency towing services to the nearest Land Rover Retailer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week”, covering “vehicle disablement due to breakdown or accident, to minor emergencies such as a tire puncture or lock-out assistance” for “the entire duration of the warranty period”. The brochure says it comes “at no additional cost to you”, works “from anywhere in the Continental United States and Canada”, and includes “Flat-tire and dead-battery service”, “Lockout service and towing to the nearest Land Rover Retailer”, and “reimbursement of reasonable costs for food, lodging or transportation, if covered repairs extend beyond a day.”

**Trip interruption.** If a certified Land Rover is “disabled due to a warrantable defect, you are entitled to reimbursement for things like lodging, transportation and other necessary expenses,” the program page says. No limit is printed; the brochure excludes “entertainment, recreation, and non-essential goods and services”. Reimbursement means paying first, so keep receipts.

**No deductible.** Repairs under the program carry “absolutely no deductible whatsoever”, Land Rover says.

**Accessories.** The brochure says accessories “that you purchase at the time you acquire your Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicle will be covered under your Approved Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty, and can be included in your purchase price.” Accessories added later aren’t mentioned.

**History report.** “You’re entitled to a history report to review for accident damage, mileage accuracy and more,” the program page says.

**Finance offers.** landroverusa.com runs a separate certified offers page. On 5 October 2026 it listed offers model by model, each for “well-qualified buyers as determined by a participating lender” and each with a delivery deadline. We don’t quote them: they change, and the page says “Land Rover or participating lender may rescind or amend this offer without notice.” Check the end date and eligible model years on the page itself. Land Rover prints no price for certification.

## Transfer, upkeep, and what the certified warranty doesn’t promise

The warranty moves with the car, with one condition. The brochure says it “is transferable to subsequent private owners and will continue in effect for the remaining warranty period. If a vehicle is sold to a non-Land Rover franchise retailer, this warranty is terminated.” Sell privately and the next owner keeps the remaining cover; trade it in at another brand’s dealership and, on the brochure’s words, it ends. No transfer fee is mentioned.

Servicing is a condition. Coverage depends on the car being “serviced as recommended by Land Rover”, and Land Rover recommends “retaining your receipts and records of regular maintenance and emergency repairs.” The warranty page sends claims to “an authorized Land Rover Retailer”, and the program page says warranty work “is only undertaken by Land Rover Trained Technicians”.

What the warranty excludes is the largest unknown. Land Rover’s one sentence speaks of “sudden and unexpected mechanical or electrical failure”; it doesn’t mention wear items, accident damage, cosmetic condition or maintenance, and no exclusions list is public. The written terms the retailer hands you decide those. If none are produced, write your questions on the buyer’s order: what is excluded, whether wear parts are covered, how a plug-in hybrid’s battery is treated.

A salesperson’s promises bind the retailer, not Land Rover. landroverusa.com’s terms of use say: “Distributors and retailers are not agents of JLR USA and have absolutely no authority to bind JLR USA by any express or implied undertaking or representation.” If a retailer promises more than the certified warranty, such as a longer term or an included plan, get it in writing as the retailer’s own commitment.

To go further, the next step is a service contract. Land Rover Vehicle Service Protection, the plan sold as Land Rover’s extended warranty, runs up to 7 years or 120,000 miles, and the vehicle “must have at least 30 days and 1,000 miles remaining on the manufacturer’s warranty”, landroverusa.com says. It doesn’t say whether a certified warranty counts. Our [Land Rover extended warranty guide](https://baronauto1.com/financing/land-rover-extended-warranty/) covers the plan, and our pieces on [what extended warranties cost](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-car-warranty-cost/) and [whether one is worth it](https://baronauto1.com/financing/is-an-extended-warranty-worth-it/) cover the decision.

## How to check a Land Rover is really certified

We found no public Land Rover tool that confirms a VIN was sold as Approved Certified Pre-Owned. The footnotes describe certified sales as “reported to” Jaguar Land Rover North America, so the proof is in the paperwork:

- **The seller.** Land Rover’s documents describe certification by a Land Rover retailer, and the warranty ends when a certified car is sold to a non-Land Rover franchise retailer. A “certified” Land Rover on another brand’s lot is not covered by this program. landroverusa.com’s certified inventory search lists retailers’ certified cars.
- **The warranty document,** naming the Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty, the plan, and the start and end.
- **The completed checklist** for this car, signed off by a Land Rover technician.
- **The history report** Land Rover says you are entitled to, and the service history that question 6 requires.

Check the VIN yourself. Land Rover’s FAQ puts it on “a plate that is visible through the bottom left side of the windshield”, and its recall page adds that it “can also be found on the certification label in the driver’s door opening”. Checklist item 7 has the technician match the two; match them to the paperwork too. Our [Land Rover VIN decoder](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/land-rover-vin-decoder/) explains each character.

Then check recalls. Item 8 requires that “all outstanding Recalls and Service Campaigns” are satisfied. Land Rover’s [recall search](https://www.landroverusa.com/ownership/vin-recall.html) takes the VIN and shows open and closed recalls, covering “recalls issued in the last 15 years and for vehicles from 1995 Model Year onwards.” If it shows an open recall, ask how item 8 was passed. Our guide to [checking a car for open recalls](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/how-to-check-a-car-for-open-recalls/) covers the federal lookup as a second source.

## Certified, ordinary used, or new

Against an ordinary used Land Rover, certification adds four things in Land Rover’s documents: the 165-point inspection with faults fixed in genuine parts, 1 or 2 years of warranty after the factory warranty, roadside assistance for that period, and a history report. It also screens out cars that fail the eligibility questions, from non-US models to modified cars and cars with gaps in their service records; nothing requires a non-certified car to pass them. Land Rover publishes no price for certification, so compare certified and non-certified asking prices for similar cars, and price the plan as well as the label: bought at 36 months, a car has up to 24 months of cover ahead on the one-year plan and up to 36 on the two-year plan, by our arithmetic.

Against a new Land Rover, the answer depends on the car’s age. A new car’s factory warranty gives 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. A certified car bought at 12 months on the two-year plan can have up to 60 months ahead by our arithmetic: the rest of its factory warranty, then the certified two years. But its mileage end is 100,000 on the odometer, not 50,000 miles of new driving. Our guide to [what certified pre-owned means](https://baronauto1.com/buying-guides/certified-pre-owned/) covers the general trade-offs.

## Before you sign: a Land Rover certified pre-owned checklist

- **Confirm the program by name.** The buyer’s order should say Land Rover Approved Certified Pre-Owned, not just “certified” or “Approved”.
- **Ask which plan.** 1 year with unlimited miles, or 2 years/100,000 miles. Land Rover publishes no rule for which a car gets.
- **Get the in-service date and odometer reading.** They set eligibility, the factory warranty’s end and the certified warranty’s end.
- **Get the start date, end date and mileage limit in writing,** especially if the car passed 50,000 miles before it was 4 years old.
- **Ask for the written warranty terms.** Covered parts and exclusions aren’t published.
- **Ask for the completed 165-point checklist,** with the key box and the brake pad, rotor and tread readings.
- **Read the history report and service records** before you negotiate.
- **Run the VIN through Land Rover’s recall search** and match the windshield plate to the door label and the paperwork.
- **On a plug-in hybrid,** ask what the traction-battery check found and when the battery warranty ends.
- **Check finance offers on the day.** They carry end dates and can be withdrawn without notice.

## Common questions

### Is Land Rover certified pre-owned worth it?

It can be, if the premium is modest and the car carries the plan you expect. Certification brings a printed 165-point inspection, 1 year with unlimited miles or 2 years/100,000 miles of warranty after the factory warranty, no deductible, roadside assistance and a history report. Land Rover publishes no price for it, so compare against a similar non-certified car and weigh the premium against the months of cover actually left, which on an older certified car can be about a year.

### What does the Land Rover CPO warranty cover?

Land Rover says it covers “repairs for sudden and unexpected mechanical or electrical failure”, using genuine parts and Land Rover-trained technicians, with no deductible. It publishes no list of covered parts or exclusions and refers buyers to a retailer for the complete terms. Get them before you sign.

### How long is the Land Rover certified pre-owned warranty?

Either 1 year with unlimited miles or 2 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first, depending on the car. Because it starts when the 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty ends, either plan ends no later than 6 years after the car’s in-service date by our arithmetic, and the two-year plan sooner if the car reaches 100,000 miles.

### When does the Land Rover CPO warranty start?

When the New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires, Land Rover’s footnotes say. A car on the one-year plan sold between 48 and 60 months after its in-service date starts on the sale date instead. The body text also says coverage “begins on the vehicle’s original in-service date and zero miles”, so ask for the dates in writing.

### Is the Land Rover CPO warranty transferable?

Yes, to later private owners, for the remaining warranty period, the brochure says. It is terminated if the car is sold to a retailer that isn’t a Land Rover franchise, so trading it in at another brand’s dealer ends it.

### What are the requirements for a Land Rover to be certified?

Under 5 years from first retail sale, fewer than 60,000 miles, built for the US market, no non-approved modifications, a complete service history, a passed independent history and mileage check, matching VIN plates, no outstanding recalls, and all 165 checklist points passed, with any faults fixed in genuine Land Rover parts by a Land Rover retailer.
