# Safelite Windshield Replacement: What Its Own Terms Promise

> Safelite’s lifetime warranty needs a defect reported within 30 days, recalibration is guaranteed for 30 days, and its own pages disagree on refunds.

## The short version

- Safelite’s nationwide lifetime warranty covers a replacement against defects in material and workmanship “for as long as you own or lease the vehicle,” if you report a defect within 30 days of discovering it. It does not pass to the next owner.
- A repair is covered against “continued cracking” with a credit toward a Safelite replacement. A chip that spreads while it is being repaired is not covered.
- Camera recalibration is guaranteed for 30 days or until the next recalibration event, whichever comes first.
- Safelite says it can usually repair damage under 6 inches with a point of impact smaller than a dime and no more than 3 chips, away from any camera or sensor.
- Its pages disagree on a cancelled prepaid booking (a fee “may be charged” versus “refunded the full amount”), on drive-away time and on how many carmakers require recalibration.
- Its affiliate Safelite Solutions handles glass claims for many insurers. Federal courts in 2014 and 2017 sided with Safelite against state limits on what those calls may say.

Safelite’s lifetime warranty is real, but the lifetime is your ownership of the car, the window to report a problem is 30 days from finding it, and the camera recalibration that often comes with new glass has a much shorter guarantee. On 9 October 2026 we read Safelite’s [nationwide lifetime warranty](https://www.safelite.com/national-lifetime-warranty), [cancellation policy](https://www.safelite.com/cancellation-refund-policy) and [Terms of Service](https://www.safelite.com/terms-of-service), its repair, replacement, recalibration and mobile pages, and its help-center answers; Belron’s shareholder page and two D’Ieteren Group releases on ownership; and the federal court opinions on Safelite’s claim calls. Safelite’s Terms bar automated access and copying without consent, so each page was read once by hand and only short passages are quoted. This site has no commercial relationship with Safelite or any glass company. For what a windshield job involves in general, see our page on [windshield replacement cost and recalibration](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/).

**Figure: Safelite’s warranty and terms, by situation**

A two-column table of ten situations with Safelite: damage with a point of impact smaller than a dime, under 6 inches and 3 chips or fewer can usually be repaired; damage blocking the driver’s view or the camera’s line of sight likely needs a replacement; a chip that spreads during the repair is not covered; a repair that cracks further later earns a credit toward a Safelite replacement, with a deductible possibly still due; a defect in a replacement is covered while you own or lease the car if reported within 30 days; the warranty does not transfer to a buyer; recalibration is guaranteed for 30 days or until the next recalibration event; rust or pinch-weld damage found under the old glass is the owner’s cost; a full cancellation of a prepaid booking may carry a fee under the policy while two help pages promise a full refund; and rescheduling carries no fee.

## Who Safelite is, and who owns it

Two Safelite companies matter to a customer. Its [companies page](https://www.safelite.com/about-safelite/safelite-autoglass-companies) describes Safelite Fulfillment, Inc. as “operating under the trade name Safelite AutoGlass”: the business that fits the glass. Safelite Solutions LLC is the group’s “claims management operation,” handling glass claims for insurers and fleets. The page says the group employs 13,500 people and that its “6,000 technicians serve 6.2 million customers each year.” The mobile page counts “more than 7,100 Mobile Glass Shops” reaching “97 percent of U.S. drivers in all 50 states.”

“Safelite is part of Belron,” the same page says, a glass group “with operations in over 40 countries.” Belron’s shareholder page (its terms require permission to link, so we name it) lists D’Ieteren Group, CD&R, Hellman & Friedman, GIC and BlackRock Private Equity Partners, and says D’Ieteren, “a Belgian family-controlled listed investment firm,” has been majority shareholder since 1999. D’Ieteren’s half-year results release of 9 September 2026 puts its holding at “50.30% in fully diluted economic rights.” Its release of 17 December 2021 gave the last full split we read: D’Ieteren 50.01%, CD&R 20.3%, the three 2021 investors 16.8%, management, employees and founding family 12.9%. D’Ieteren’s website was not answering, so its annual report was not read.

The 2026 release adds one figure that bears on this page. Across Belron worldwide, recalibration jobs equalled 52.1% of windscreen replacement jobs in the first half of 2026, against 45.9% a year earlier (up 6.2 points, our arithmetic). That is a group figure, not Safelite’s, but it shows how routine a recalibration has become alongside new glass.

## The nationwide lifetime warranty, line by line

Safelite calls it “the industry’s only nationwide lifetime warranty”; that is its claim, and we did not survey other glass companies. The warranty page itself is short and carries more conditions than the headline. For a replacement it “covers its glass replacement service against defects in material and/or workmanship for as long as you own or lease the vehicle.” The lifetime is your ownership, not the car’s, and the page says so, which is the disclosure the FTC’s advertising guide asks for: under 16 CFR 239.4 an advertiser using “lifetime” should disclose “the life to which the representation refers.”

- **Thirty days to report.** “You must notify us within 30 days of discovering the defect,” and Safelite is not responsible for damage caused by a delay past that. A slow leak tolerated for two months is the case this clause is written for.
- **Inspection, then approval.** “Safelite must be given the opportunity to inspect the vehicle damage prior to the approval of any warranty claim.”
- **Receipt required.** “All nationwide lifetime warranty claims require a copy of your receipt.” Safelite says the receipt is in your confirmation email and at mysafelite.com, where you can also “Report an Issue.”
- **It stops with you.** “This warranty is not transferrable to another owner/lessor.” It applies “at any location across the United States.”

Two exclusions sit lower down. Technicians record visible damage on “a pre-inspection form” before they start, and Safelite is not responsible for damage that existed before the service. If removing the old glass exposes “rust or other damage to the pinch weld or frame that prevent a safe installation,” then “you are responsible for all costs to repair the damage or rust including the cost to transport your vehicle to and from a qualified body shop if necessary.” On an older car a glass job can become a body-shop job; [our windshield page](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/#not-a-window) explains why the bonded edge matters. Safelite also excludes incidental and consequential damages, noting that some states do not allow that.

**What each Safelite warranty covers, from its warranty page and help center, read 9 October 2026**

| Service | What is covered | How long | Main conditions | Passes to a new owner? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Glass replacement | Defects in material and/or workmanship | As long as you own or lease the vehicle | Report within 30 days of discovering the defect; inspection before approval; receipt | No |
| Windshield repair | The repaired portion, against continued cracking; passes any state vehicle inspection | As long as you own or lease the vehicle | Remedy is a credit toward a Safelite replacement; not covered if the damage grows during the repair | No |
| Camera recalibration | The recalibration | 30 days, or until the next recalibration event, whichever comes first | Events defined by the carmaker, including a collision, a windshield replacement, disconnecting or removing the camera, and a vehicle re-alignment | Not stated |
| Safelite wiper blades | Defects in material or workmanship, replaced at Safelite’s option | Six months from purchase | Not misuse, abuse or gradual wear-and-tear | No (original consumer only) |

We read other service chains’ promises the same way; see our pages on [Discount Tire’s warranty](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/discount-tire-warranty/), [Midas](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/midas/) and [Firestone Complete Auto Care](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/firestone-complete-auto-care/).

## What the repair guarantee covers, and the case it leaves out

For a chip repair, the warranty “covers the repaired portion of the windshield against continued cracking, and warrants that the repair will pass any state vehicle inspection.” If more damage spreads from the repair, “or if you are dissatisfied with the repair for any reason,” Safelite will “credit the cost of your repair toward a replacement performed by Safelite.” The remedy is a credit, usable only on a Safelite replacement. If insurance paid for the repair, “the insurance company may receive credit and you may still be responsible for any deductible,” so a free repair that later fails can still cost you a replacement deductible.

**A chip that spreads during the repair is your cost.** Safelite says that “through no fault of the repair technician” the damage may grow during a repair and need a replacement, and “These instances are not covered by the warranty and Safelite is not responsible for the cost of the windshield replacement or any additional damage.” Before a repair on a chip near a crack or the edge, ask what you would pay if it runs.

On appearance, the help center says Safelite cannot guarantee a repair will be invisible: “a slight blemish or imperfection where the impact occurred is normal.” The repair page promises “a durable and crystal-clear repair.” The repair page also says repairs will pass “lease turn-back and state vehicle inspections,” while the warranty page mentions only state inspections; if you are fixing a chip before handing back a leased car, the warranty page does not mention lease returns. Results are better, the warranty page says, when the damage is recent, small and free of moisture or other foreign matter, which matches the general advice on our windshield page: book soon.

## Safelite’s repair-or-replace rules

Safelite says it has “a repair first mindset.” Its [repair page](https://www.safelite.com/windshield-repair) says it can “usually” repair when “The damage is under 6 inches in length,” “The point of impact is smaller than a dime,” “There are no more than 3 chips” and “The damage doesn’t block a camera or sensor.” (The first line carries an asterisk with no footnote in the text we read.) The help center puts it the other way: with “more than three chips or cracks,” or damage that “blocks your field of vision” or “sits in the forward facing camera’s line of sight, you’ll likely need a replacement.” These are Safelite’s rules, not a standard; [our windshield page](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/#repair-or-replace) explains why size limits differ between shops and why position matters as much as size.

The technician decides at the car. If a booked repair needs a replacement, Safelite will “update your service order and determine if we have your vehicle’s specific glass part on hand,” and rebook if not. Safelite will not seal a leak in glass another shop fitted (“Our technicians are not able to seal glass installed by a non Safelite shop”), so a leak there means new glass, and it does not work on sunroofs or tint windows. Its timings: a repair often “30 minutes or less,” two or three chips on a mobile visit up to 90 minutes, a replacement “60 minutes or less,” and recalibration “an additional hour.”

## Recalibration as Safelite describes it

Safelite’s help center explains why the camera matters: features such as “automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and forward collision warning use data from a camera connected to your front windshield.” Its [recalibration page](https://www.safelite.com/windshield-camera-recalibration) says you will be alerted when booking if the car needs it, and a technician “will complete the recalibration required by your vehicle manufacturer,” static, dynamic or both. Static uses “a specific target image mounted on a fixture in front of the vehicle”; dynamic means “driving the vehicle at a set speed on well-marked roads.” Our windshield page covers [what each involves](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/#calibration).

Safelite says it can do both “in either a mobile or in-shop environment,” with mobile recalibration for “many vehicles that require dynamic calibration.” A footnote adds: “Recalibration may not be available for all vehicles or at all locations.” Confirm before the day that whoever comes can do your car.

The guarantee afterwards is short: “guaranteed for 30 days after recalibration or until the next recalibration event, whichever occurs first,” and a recalibration event “includes things such as a vehicle collision, windshield replacement, disconnection or removal of the camera, and vehicle re-alignment.” A re-alignment the week after new glass ends it. Safelite also warns that modifications from original specifications “may cause your advanced safety systems not to function as intended,” which matters on a lifted or lowered car. Its page says the process typically ends with “documentation of completed calibration”; ask for it and keep it with the receipt. For a recalibration, Safelite asks you to “remove any heavy cargo from the vehicle and ensure all tires are properly inflated,” with the tank “at least three-fourths full” (an electric car “at least a 60% charge”).

On how often it is needed, the pages disagree. The help center says “all vehicle manufacturers require camera recalibration after a windshield replacement” and, on the same page, “Most vehicle manufacturers require” it. The recalibration page says “nearly all” and “often necessary.” The cost page says it is needed “After a cracked windshield repair or replacement,” though every other page ties it to replacement. Safelite’s own ADAS page gives the practical answer: check with the carmaker “for which ADAS systems are tied to the windshield.”

**Figure: Annotated photograph**

Three numbered callouts over shattered glass mark the impact point, the upper glass where a camera would sit and the edge, with Safelite's repair-or-replace rule, its recalibration guarantee, and the conditions of its lifetime warranty.

Safelite’s repair, recalibration and warranty pages, read on 9 October 2026, usually repair damage smaller than a dime, under 6 inches, with 3 chips or fewer (callout 1), guarantee recalibration for 30 days or until the next recalibration event (callout 2), and require defects in a fitting to be reported within 30 days (callout 3). The photograph is illustrative.

## Insurance claims, and Safelite Solutions on the other end of the phone

Safelite offers to deal with your insurer for you: “We’re experts at verifying coverage, filing the claim and handling all the paperwork.” Its help center says that with comprehensive coverage “you’ll only be responsible for your deductible,” that liability-only cover does not include glass, that “Many insurance companies cover windshield repair at 100% coverage with no deductible,” and that “In many cases, insurance companies will not count auto glass damage as a claim.” Those are Safelite’s statements about other companies’ policies; ask your own insurer, and see [our windshield page](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/#insurance) for how glass coverage varies by state. On recalibration, “Most insurance carriers cover the full cost” under comprehensive coverage, but “optional self-selected services associated with recalibration” may not be included; Safelite says it will show “the total cost and coverage breakdown before you book.” Its group discount (10% off for members of the military, AAA, AARP and first responders) excludes recalibration and “cannot be applied to insurance claims or deductibles.” We leave out the promo code: Safelite’s Terms ask that codes not be posted publicly.

The less visible half of the business is Safelite Solutions. The help center says it “administers auto glass programs for more than 150 insurance companies”; the companies page says it is “a third-party administrator of auto glass claims for more than 180 insurance and fleet companies, including 19 of the top 30 property and casualty insurance companies,” with “approximately 9,000 network providers.” Other pages say “hundreds” and “most.” The counts measure different things, so the 30-company gap (our arithmetic) need not be an error.

So when you report glass damage to an insurer that uses Safelite Solutions, the person taking the claim may work for Safelite’s sister company. A federal appeals court described those calls in 2014: the representative “reads a script that explains the consumer’s repair options. If practicable, the script recommends Safelite AutoGlass to do the auto-glass repairs,” and otherwise may suggest a pre-approved independent shop. The court added that “Although not required by law, the Safelite Solutions script informs consumers of its affiliation with Safelite AutoGlass.” You can still choose another shop. Minnesota’s required advisory, as the Eighth Circuit quoted it, reads: “Minnesota law gives you the right to go to any glass vendor you choose, and prohibits me from pressuring you to choose a particular vendor.” If you choose a shop outside the network, the call may warn that the shop could bill you for anything your insurer will not pay (“balance billing”). Ask that shop, in writing, whether it will.

## What courts have recorded about Safelite’s claim calls

We found no state attorney-general or FTC action against Safelite over claims handling that we could read. The court record we did read is mostly suits Safelite brought against state officials over what its claim calls could say.

**Connecticut.** Connecticut law already barred insurers and claims administrators “from requiring where repairs should be made.” Its Public Act 13-67, passed in May 2013, barred a claims representative or administrator from naming or booking a glass shop owned by the insurer, the administrator or their parent unless it also named “at least one additional licensed glass shop in the area.” The Second Circuit noted that the law’s history “revealed no consumer dissatisfaction with Safelite’s business model but substantial concerns on the part of unaffiliated glass dealers,” and in [Safelite Group, Inc. v. Jepsen](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCOURTS-ca2-13-04761/pdf/USCOURTS-ca2-13-04761-0.pdf), decided September 4, 2014, it ordered “an injunction preventing enforcement of Public Act 13-67(c)(2)” on First Amendment grounds. That was a preliminary-injunction appeal; we did not read what followed.

**Minnesota.** Minnesota’s Commerce Department investigated from 2014 after allegations, in the state Legislative Auditor’s words, “that Safelite steered people making claims away from auto glass repair shops that were not part of Safelite’s network.” According to the federal court, the department “did not pursue the cease and desist order against Safelite, but instead focused on the insurers that used Safelite as a claims administrator.” Its consent order with The Auto Club Group (AAA), dated January 8, 2015, “concluded that Safelite’s scripts violated” the state’s advisory and anti-coercion rules and “required that AAA terminate Safelite as its claims administrator in Minnesota.” Safelite sued. The court found that its scripts told customers choosing a non-network shop they “might be balance billed,” that “Balance billing is a legal practice in Minnesota,” and that “there was no evidence that the DOC had ever received a consumer complaint regarding Safelite’s claims administration practices.” On January 23, 2017, in [Safelite Group, Inc. v. Rothman](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCOURTS-mnd-0_15-cv-01878/pdf/USCOURTS-mnd-0_15-cv-01878-0.pdf), it held the ban on those statements “violates the First Amendment and thus the Consent Order is unenforceable,” while upholding the mandatory advisory. The [Eighth Circuit](https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCOURTS-ca8-17-02974/pdf/USCOURTS-ca8-17-02974-0.pdf) affirmed Safelite’s fee award on January 17, 2019. A [Legislative Auditor review](https://www.auditor.leg.state.mn.us/sreview/safelite.pdf) of April 17, 2018 found that a department investigator had not complied with the state’s Data Practices Act when he shared information about the investigation, but “found no harm to individuals.” It says the matter also reached the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Office of Administrative Hearings; we could not read those records.

**Court and government records on Safelite’s claim handling that we read**

| Date | Record | What it was about | What it decided or found |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| August 26, 2005 | Independent Glass Association v. Safelite Group, D. Minn. No. 05-238 | An independent-glass trade group and others alleged Safelite’s “scripts” steered customers with false information | Motion to dismiss: some false advertising and deceptive trade practice claims survived, the rest dismissed. Allegations only; outcome not read |
| September 4, 2014 | Safelite Group v. Jepsen, 2d Cir. No. 13-4761-cv | Connecticut’s rule that a claims handler naming its own shop must name another | Injunction ordered against that provision (Safelite was the plaintiff) |
| January 23, 2017 | Safelite Group v. Rothman, D. Minn. No. 15-cv-1878 | Minnesota’s consent order with AAA over Safelite’s balance-billing statements | Ban on truthful “may be balance billed” statements void; consent order unenforceable; right-to-choose advisory upheld |
| April 17, 2018 | Minnesota Legislative Auditor, special review | Conduct of the state’s investigation | An investigator did not comply with the Data Practices Act; no harm to individuals found |
| January 17, 2019 | Safelite Group v. Rothman, 8th Cir. No. 17-2974 | The state’s appeal of the fee award | Fee award to Safelite affirmed (unpublished) |

For a customer, a balance-billing warning on a claim call is something courts have said Safelite may say: treat it as a question for your chosen shop, not an instruction. Trade press has reported other disputes involving Safelite in 2025 and 2026; we found no court record or official release for them we could read, so they are not described here.

## The glass, the quote and the extra charges

Safelite prints no prices. Its cost page says a job “could cost you as little as $0!” with insurance, and that it provides “transparent pricing”; the real figure comes from a quote that needs a licence plate or VIN, which we did not start. (Our windshield page explains [why it prints no price either](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/#no-price).) The help center says what a quote covers: “the cost of the glass and labor. Local and state taxes, as well as any required moldings or fees, may be an additional charge,” and “The technician will notify you of any additional charges before starting the work.” Another answer explains a “disposal or recycling fee” without giving its amount. Ask for the total with taxes, moldings and that fee included.

Safelite says its glass comes from “companies that work directly with and supply to the vehicle manufacturers.” It defines OEM glass as made “by the same manufacturer as your original glass” and OEE glass as “made to the same standards, but by a different manufacturer,” and says customers “can choose OEM or OEE prior to service” by phone. Nothing we read says which you get by default, so ask. Either way, replacement glass must meet the federal glazing standard: FMVSS No. 205 says “Glazing intended for aftermarket replacement is required to meet the requirements of this standard.” Features built into the glass matter more than the label; see [our section on choosing glass](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/#glass-variants).

Safelite takes cash, checks, major cards, Apple Pay and Afterpay (“four interest-free installments over the course of six weeks”), and you can pay in advance when booking online. That has a catch, covered below.

## Mobile service, drive-away time and the appointment itself

Mobile service is offered “in most areas”; Safelite does not collect cars. It wants a level driveway, parking lot, garage or carport, and the technician will “make a final decision before beginning your service.” In rain without cover you reschedule or go to a shop. The technician calls the morning of the job with an arrival estimate, and a “Technician Profile Email” gives the technician’s name, photo and credentials. If nobody comes, Safelite says to “call or text us immediately.” Some shops offer Drop & Go: leave the car before 9 AM, and if you cannot collect it by 5 PM it waits until the next business day.

Drive-away time is where the pages disagree most plainly. The help center says “You can usually drive away one hour after a windshield replacement” and credits “the industry’s first adhesive with a one-hour drive-away time.” The replacement page says the technician “will tell you about the 30-45 minute drive-away-time adhesive.” Cure time depends on the adhesive and the weather, as our windshield page explains, so ask the technician for the time that applies to your car that day and wait at least that long. Safelite also moves a windshield-mounted mirror to the new glass and re-applies inspection stickers where the law allows; some states require a new sticker “within 3-5 days after a windshield replacement.”

## Cancelling, rescheduling and the Terms of Service

Rescheduling is free: “You may reschedule service at any time without incurring any cancellation fee.” Cancelling a booking you have paid for online is where Safelite’s documents split.

**Two answers on a prepaid cancellation.** The cancellation policy says that for prepaid service booked through Safelite.com, “a cancellation fee, plus applicable taxes, may be charged if the service is cancelled in full,” and the Terms add “FEES PAID BY YOU ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.” Two help-center pages say: “If you choose to cancel a prepaid service booking, you will be refunded the full amount.” No page states the fee. If plans may change, pay at the appointment, or reschedule rather than cancel, and get any refund amount in writing.

The [Terms of Service](https://www.safelite.com/terms-of-service) print no date. They cover Safelite’s websites, apps and online services, and they set how a dispute would run:

- **Talk first.** You must send Safelite “a written description of your problem” and allow 30 days to resolve it before arbitration.
- **Arbitration, not court.** Individual arbitration with the American Arbitration Association “in the county of your billing address,” though “you may assert claims in small claims court if your claims qualify.” Class actions are waived.
- **A short opt-out.** You can decline arbitration by email “no later than 30 days after the date you first accept these Terms.”
- **One year to sue,** and liability capped at the greater of what you paid Safelite in the last 12 months or $500, where the law allows. Ohio law governs.

### Where Safelite’s own pages disagree

Across the 25 Safelite pages we read, these points conflict. A dispute would turn on the warranty page, the cancellation policy and the Terms, so get anything that matters confirmed in writing.

**Points on which Safelite’s pages disagree, read 9 October 2026**

| Question | One Safelite page says | Another says |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cancelling a prepaid booking in full | A fee plus taxes may be charged (cancellation policy, Terms) | “refunded the full amount” (two help-center pages) |
| Driving after a replacement | Usually one hour (help center and service pages) | A “30-45 minute” adhesive (replacement page) |
| Carmakers requiring recalibration | “all” and “Most” (one help-center page) | “nearly all” and “often necessary” (recalibration page) |
| When recalibration is needed | After a replacement (help center, warranty page) | “After a cracked windshield repair or replacement” (cost page) |
| Insurers served by Safelite Solutions | “more than 150” (help center) | “more than 180 insurance and fleet companies” (companies page) |
| Repair guarantee | “any state vehicle inspection” (warranty page) | “lease turn-back and state vehicle inspections” (repair page) |
| How a repair looks | “a slight blemish or imperfection” is normal (help center) | “crystal-clear” (repair page) |

## Before and after a Safelite appointment

Safelite’s terms reward the owner who keeps paper and reports fast. If the car is one you are buying, pair this with our guide to [a pre-purchase inspection](https://baronauto1.com/buying-guides/used-car-pre-purchase-inspection/) and [our checks for a replaced windshield](https://baronauto1.com/car-care/windshield-replacement-cost/#viewing).

- **Measure the damage.** Under 6 inches, impact point smaller than a dime, no more than 3 chips, clear of the camera: Safelite’s repair line. Photograph it with a coin beside it, and book soon.
- **Ask about the camera first.** Does the car need recalibration, which kind, and can the van or shop coming to you do it?
- **Get the full price.** Glass and labor are quoted; taxes, moldings, fees and a disposal or recycling fee can be extra. Ask for recalibration as its own line.
- **Choose the glass.** If you want OEM glass, say so by phone before the appointment.
- **Think before prepaying.** Rescheduling is free; a cancelled prepaid booking may carry a fee.
- **Prepare the car.** For recalibration, heavy cargo out and tires at the right pressure; tank at least three-fourths full. For mobile work, a level, covered spot.

## Common questions

### Does Safelite have a lifetime warranty?

Yes. For a replacement, Safelite’s nationwide lifetime warranty covers defects in material and/or workmanship “for as long as you own or lease the vehicle,” if you report a defect within 30 days of discovering it, let Safelite inspect it and show your receipt. Repairs are covered against continued cracking with a credit toward a Safelite replacement. Recalibration is guaranteed for 30 days or until the next recalibration event.

### Does the Safelite warranty transfer if I sell the car?

No. The warranty “is not transferrable to another owner/lessor.” If you buy a used car with a Safelite windshield, the warranty does not pass to you, but the seller’s receipt and recalibration record are still worth asking for.

### Will insurance pay for a Safelite windshield replacement?

Safelite says that with comprehensive coverage you pay your deductible, many insurers cover a repair in full, and liability-only cover does not include glass. It will file the claim for you, and says most carriers cover recalibration under comprehensive coverage, though some optional services may not be. Your policy decides; ask your insurer.

### How big a chip or crack can Safelite repair?

Usually damage under 6 inches long, with an impact point smaller than a dime and no more than 3 chips, that does not block a camera or sensor. With more than three chips or cracks, or damage in your line of sight or the camera’s, Safelite says you will likely need a replacement.

### Can I cancel a Safelite appointment and get my money back?

Rescheduling costs nothing, and if you have not prepaid there is nothing to refund. For a prepaid online booking cancelled in full, the cancellation policy and Terms say a fee plus taxes may be deducted, while two help-center pages promise a full refund. No page states the fee. Changes are made at mysafelite.com.

### Who owns Safelite?

Safelite says it is part of Belron, a vehicle glass group in over 40 countries. Belron’s majority shareholder since 1999 is D’Ieteren Group of Belgium, which reported 50.30% in fully diluted economic rights on 9 September 2026; CD&R, Hellman & Friedman, GIC and BlackRock Private Equity Partners hold stakes too. Safelite’s own review page shows 4.66 out of 5 from 1,122,888 reviews it collects; that is Safelite’s figure, and we do not rate the company.
