# Symptoms of a Bad Catalytic Converter: What 1,308 Reports Show

## The short version

- Counted, not remembered: we pulled 165,858 NHTSA complaints and reduced them to the 1,308 that name a catalytic converter, measured against 43,043 other engine complaints from the same cars.

Search &ldquo;symptoms of a bad catalytic converter&rdquo; and you get the same list every time: check-engine light, rotten-egg smell, sluggish power, failed emissions. None of it is measured against anything, and some of it turns out to be wrong. So we went to the one public record that carries owners&rsquo; own accounts at scale: 165,858 NHTSA complaints across 30 model lines and model years 2010 to 2020, reduced to the 1,308 that name a catalytic converter. The question is not what the symptoms are — anyone can assert those — but which of them actually distinguishes a failing converter from ordinary engine trouble, and what the file says that the lists do not.

## First, what these complaints are — and aren&rsquo;t

Catalytic-converter theft has been everywhere in the news, so it is worth saying what this data is not about. In the federal safety-complaint file, theft is just 1.1% of the converter reports; failure is 98.9%. That is not because theft is rare — it is because a stolen converter is a property crime you report to the police and your insurer, not a safety defect you report to NHTSA. If your converter was sawn off and your exhaust is suddenly deafening, that is theft, and this page is about the other thing: a converter that has actually gone bad.

## The check-engine light is the headline, not the diagnosis

The single commonest thing in the failure reports is a check-engine light, often with a P0420 or P0430 code — it appears in 45.6% of them. But it runs at 24.2% in the control set too, so at 1.9 times the rate it barely distinguishes a converter problem from any other engine problem. There is a mechanical reason: P0420 means &ldquo;catalyst efficiency below threshold,&rdquo; which the computer infers from the oxygen sensors, and a great many things other than a dead converter can trip it — a lazy sensor, a small exhaust leak, a misfire, oil getting where it should not. ## The symptom that actually means the converter

The one category that truly separates a failed converter from general engine trouble is a clogged or restricted one: 9.4% of failure reports against 0.8% of the control, nearly twelve times as common. That concentration is a lesson twice over. First, a &ldquo;bad converter&rdquo; is often a known engine issue wearing the converter as a symptom, sometimes with a campaign or extended warranty attached. Where the file records an odometer reading, converter failures land at a median of about 111,000 miles against 85,000 for the engine control — a high-mileage event, as you would expect from a part slowly poisoned over years. The reading is right-censored in the usual way — these cars are still on the road — so treat it as a rough floor rather than a life expectancy. The practical point stands: a converter code on a low-mileage car deserves more suspicion of an upstream cause than the converter itself.

## What to do when you suspect it

Work it in order, because the converter is the expensive end of the diagnosis. Read the code first, and if it is a P0420 or P0430, have the upstream suspects checked before the converter is condemned — the oxygen sensors, an exhaust leak, a misfire, oil consumption. ## On a used car you are about to buy

A converter fault is easy to clear temporarily and expensive to inherit.
