# Complaint Lookup

> Read the complaint record before you buy: enter a VIN and see what owners filed with NHTSA for that model year — the totals, the crash and fire flags, which systems draw the reports, and the most recent narratives in the owners' own words.

## What this tool does

Enter a 17-character VIN and the page decodes it against the federal registry, then pulls the owner complaints filed with NHTSA for that model year: the total, how many involved a crash or a fire, the injuries and deaths stated in the filings, which component systems draw the reports, and the most recent complaint narratives in the owners' own words.

## How to read a complaint record

A complaint is one owner reporting a problem — self-reported, uninvestigated, and counted per model year, not per vehicle. Raw totals track how many cars were sold as much as how bad the parts are, so the useful readings are the shape of the record: which systems recur, whether crash and fire flags cluster, and what the recent narratives keep describing.

## Limits worth knowing

The record describes the model year, not the specific car in front of you — that car's own history is a records question, and whether a related recall was ever repaired on it is VIN-specific. The Recall Lookup and the full history report cover those halves.
