# Acura Extended Warranty: Who Backs Acura Care, and When It Starts

> Acura's extended warranty is Acura Care: who provides it, what the brochures print, why a new-car plan counts from day one, and which add-ons Safe-Guard owes.

## The short version

- Acura’s extended warranty is Acura Care, a vehicle service contract sold only by Acura dealers. On an Acura it is provided by American Honda Protection Products Corporation. The lender’s FAQ puts the longest term at 8 years/120,000 miles; no Acura document we read prints a price or a deductible for it.
- The Acura Care name is also on products another company stands behind. Of the 12 Acura Care products in Acura Financial Services’ brochure rack, 7 name Safe-Guard Products International, including Term Protection and the Acura Care contract for other makes.
- A new-car plan counts from the car’s first in-service date at zero miles, and its repair cover starts when Acura’s 4-year, 50,000-mile warranty ends. At the end points the longest plan reaches 4 years and 70,000 miles past that warranty; a car driven 20,000 miles a year gets 3.5 years.
- The 2023 brochure prints a rental car at up to $45 a day for 6 days, and trip interruption at up to $300 a day for 3 days. The 2015 edition, still linked from acuracertified.com, prints $100 a day for the trip benefit on most plans.
- The FAQ says used and certified cars get Acura Care at the time of vehicle purchase, that plans transfer and that you can cancel for a pro-rated refund. The newest full contract text we found is a 2014 edition posted by a dealer, not by Acura. The ZDX plan excludes the high-voltage battery.

Acura’s extended warranty is a vehicle service contract called Acura Care. It isn’t the factory warranty. It is a separate purchase from an Acura dealer, with its own contract, start date and cancellation rules. This page is built from documents we read on 30 September 2026: Acura Financial Services’ Protection Products page and the twelve Acura brochures it links, the eleven answers in its Service Contracts FAQ, the 2015 Acura Care brochure that acuracertified.com still links, and Acura’s warranty booklet for 2026 models. Acura publishes no sample contract, so we also read the newest full contract text we could find, a 2014 edition posted by an Acura dealer, and treat it as dated evidence. The CFPB complaint file of Acura’s lender completes the picture.

**Figure: Who stands behind each Acura Care product**

A two-column table of the products Acura Financial Services sells under the Acura Care name, with the company each brochure names as provider, administrator or obligor, and the term it prints.

From the brochures Acura Financial Services' Protection Products page linked, and its FAQ, read 30 September 2026. Of 12 Acura Care products, 5 name American Honda Protection Products Corporation and 7 name Safe-Guard (our count). Acura prints no price for any of them.

## Acura Care is the name; American Honda Protection Products owes the repair

Three companies appear on Acura Care paperwork. The [2023 Acura Care brochure](https://acura.americanhondafinance.com/resource/1769731670000/AHFC_Protection_Products_Brochures_First/2023_Acura_Care_Acura_Vehicles_Coverage_eBrochure.pdf) (form ABROC08/23), the one Acura Financial Services links today, says “Provided by: American Honda Protection Products Corporation”, with American Honda Service Contract Corp. as the provider in Florida. The 2015 brochure and the 2014 contract add the administrator, American Honda Finance Corporation. The add-on brochures explain the link: “Acura Financial Services is a DBA of American Honda Finance Corporation.”

Only the 2014 contract spells out who is bound. Its “we” is “the service contract provider, American Honda Protection Products Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMERICAN HONDA”, which it defines as American Honda Motor Co., Inc., and it says the provider’s obligations “are backed by the full faith and credit of the provider”. That is the role our guide to [who actually owes you the repair](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#who-owes-you) calls the obligor: the company contractually bound to pay your claim. No current Acura document uses the word, so find the provider line on your own contract and check the name.

The lender’s FAQ adds that Acura Care is “offered exclusively by dealers” and “honored at any authorized Acura dealership in the United States”. The same FAQ answers for Honda Care, which Honda’s brochure says comes from the same provider; see our [Honda extended warranty guide](https://baronauto1.com/financing/honda-extended-warranty/).

## Same name, different company: the Acura Care products Safe-Guard stands behind

The [Protection Products page](https://acura.americanhondafinance.com/s/protection-products-pre-login) sells nine kinds of product to Honda and Acura owners, and every Acura brochure it links says Acura Care. The small print splits them in two. By our count, 5 name American Honda Protection Products Corporation and 7 name Safe-Guard Products International, LLC, as administrator or obligor, with other companies in some states.

**The Acura Care products whose brochures Acura Financial Services’ Protection Products page linked on 30 September 2026, and the company each brochure names. “Not printed” means the brochure gives no term.**

| Product | What it covers | Term printed | Company named |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Acura Care contract, Acura vehicles | “Virtually every component”, or powertrain parts, by level | Up to 8 years/120,000 miles (FAQ) | American Honda Protection Products; American Honda Service Contract Corp. in Florida |
| Acura Care contract, all-electric ZDX | Excludes the high-voltage battery and chargers | Not printed | The same two companies |
| Sentinel and Sentinel Wrap | Oil changes; tire rotations on Wrap | Not printed | American Honda Protection Products |
| Maintenance Wrap | Oil, filter and tire rotations after Acura’s complimentary maintenance | Not printed | American Honda Protection Products |
| ZDX Maintenance and Maintenance Plus | Scheduled maintenance; Plus adds brake pads and rotors | Not printed | American Honda Protection Products |
| Term Protection | Brake pads, battery, belts and hoses, wipers, alignment, once each; no deductible | 4 years or 60,000 miles from purchase | Safe-Guard; Safe-Guard Warranty Corporation in Florida |
| Tire & Wheel Protection | Road-hazard tire and wheel damage | Up to 7 years | Safe-Guard; others in Oklahoma and Washington |
| Key Protection | Key replacement, up to $800 per occurrence | Not printed | Safe-Guard, or SafeRide Motor Club |
| Dent Protection | Dents no larger than 4 inches across | Not printed | Safe-Guard; others in Oklahoma and Washington |
| Windshield Protection | Chip and crack repairs; not sold in Florida | Not printed | Safe-Guard; others in Oklahoma and Washington |
| GAP | The loan balance left after a total loss | Not printed | Safe-Guard, as administrator |
| Acura Care contract, other makes | Platinum, Gold or Powertrain plans | Up to 10 years or 120,000 miles from purchase | Safe-Guard; First Shield Service Corporation in California |

A claim under a Safe-Guard product goes to Safe-Guard, not American Honda, and the add-on brochures say the obligor or administrator “will be clearly identified in your Customer Agreement”. The contract for other makes, which the FAQ says is “administered by Safe-Guard Products International (SGI)”, even runs on a different clock: from the agreement purchase date, alongside the maker’s warranty. The name reaches further still. On a certified Acura the roadside program in the certified booklet is also called Acura Care, and it is “provided through the American Automobile Association”. If a used-car listing says “Acura Care”, ask which one.

**Check the provider line, not the logo.** Every brochure in the table says Acura Care. On a contract for your Acura, the provider should be American Honda Protection Products Corporation, or American Honda Service Contract Corp. in Florida. If it names Safe-Guard, First Shield or anyone else, you are buying a different product with its own terms, whatever the cover page says.

## The six Acura Care levels, and what the brochure says they cover

The 2023 brochure says Acura Care “offers six levels of coverage, depending on where your Acura is in its life cycle”: New Vehicle Coverage, Pre-Owned Vehicle Coverage, Certified Additional Coverage, Certified Used Additional Coverage, Certified Used Powertrain Coverage, and Powertrain Coverage for pre-owned vehicles only.

- **New, Pre-Owned, Certified Additional and Certified Used Additional.** If you follow the maintenance schedule, these plans “cover expensive repairs for virtually every component on your vehicle”: the drivetrain, electronics and electrical system, suspension, steering and brakes, heating and cooling, and Acura Genuine audio and communication accessories.
- **Powertrain and Certified Used Powertrain.** These “cover essential powertrain components”: the engine, the front and rear drive axles, the transmission, and seals, gaskets and fluids.

That is the whole description. The brochure prints no term, mileage limit, deductible, price, start date or exclusion list, and calls itself “an overview of coverage and benefits”. It doesn’t say which cars the certified levels are for. acuracertified.com marks Acura Care “May be eligible for purchase” for Precision Certified and Precision Used, the tiers our [Acura certified pre-owned guide](https://baronauto1.com/buying-guides/acura-certified-pre-owned/) explains.

The 2014 contract shows what “virtually every component” meant. On New, Pre-Owned and Certified Additional Coverage, “All VEHICLE parts are covered by this CONTRACT” except those its exclusions article names, which is usually called exclusionary cover. Repairs were priced at the dealer’s retail parts prices, up to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, and at Acura’s flat-rate labor times. The 2015 brochure lists four levels, not six. Both it and the 2023 edition offer commercial coverage on New plans; the 2015 edition adds that a surcharge applies.

**The ZDX.** The all-electric ZDX has its own brochure (form ABROCEV04/24) with three levels: New, Near New and Pre-Owned. It says these plans “are only available for ZDX vehicles” and excludes the “High-voltage battery, In-home and other high-voltage battery chargers, and Motocompacto accessory.” The battery stays with Acura’s own warranty, which the certified booklet describes as continuing for “8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first”. The ZDX plan doesn’t take it over when that ends.

## When an Acura Care plan starts, and what that does to the arithmetic

This is the rule that changes what you are buying, and the 2023 brochure leaves it out. The 2015 brochure prints it: “Coverage for a New Plan begins when the vehicle is originally put into service and at zero miles. Coverage for Pre-Owned and Powertrain Plans begins on the vehicle service contract purchase date and at the mileage on the odometer on that date.” The 2014 contract says the same and puts Certified plans with New ones. Both count from the in-service date, the day the car’s original factory warranty went into effect, “not the date YOU purchased YOUR VEHICLE.”

The lender’s FAQ, last edited in December 2021, prints the other half: “Some benefits start from the purchase date of the service contract, while repair coverage will begin right after the Honda or Acura Limited Warranty expires.” The 2015 brochure agrees: the contract’s cover of the components it shares with the warranty “begins when the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage has expired.” The 2014 contract excludes any repair another warranty covers, and warns: “THIS CONTRACT MAY DUPLICATE SOME WARRANTY COVERAGE.”

So a new-car plan runs from the car’s first day, but in its first years the factory warranty pays for repairs, and what the plan adds is its benefits, such as the rental car and trip interruption described below, which the 2014 contract paid on factory warranty repairs too. Acura’s booklet covers a 2026 Acura for 4 years or 50,000 miles and its powertrain for 6 years or 70,000 miles, whichever comes first, from the day it is delivered, leased or first used as a demonstrator. The FAQ prints the same terms.

At the end points, the longest plan reaches 4 years and 70,000 miles past the new-car warranty, and 2 years and 50,000 miles past the powertrain warranty. Those subtractions are ours, and they are ceilings, not what every car gets, because each coverage stops at whichever limit comes first. Two examples, also our arithmetic:

- **10,000 miles a year.** The new-car warranty ends at 4 years with 40,000 miles on the odometer, the powertrain warranty at 6 years and 60,000 miles, and an 8-year, 120,000-mile plan at 8 years and 80,000 miles: 4 years of repair cover after the new-car warranty.
- **20,000 miles a year.** The new-car warranty ends at 50,000 miles after 2.5 years, the powertrain warranty at 70,000 miles after 3.5 years, and the plan at 120,000 miles after 6 years: 3.5 years and 70,000 miles after the new-car warranty.

The start date also decides what a late purchase is worth. A New plan bought in the car’s third year still counts from its first day. No current Acura document prints a deadline for buying one. For used and certified cars the FAQ says Acura Care is available “at the time of vehicle purchase”, and it can go into a finance or lease agreement if bought at the same time. The 2014 application required a Certified or Powertrain plan “at the time of vehicle purchase”, and a Pre-Owned plan too once the car was outside 48 months or 50,000 miles from its in-service date, the same limits as the new-car warranty.

**Get the end date in writing.** On a New or Certified plan, “8 years/120,000 miles” counts from the car’s first in-service date at zero miles, not from the day you sign. Ask for the contract’s expiration date and mileage, and compare them with the end of the new-car warranty.

## What a new Acura already carries: the 2026 warranty booklet

Acura’s [warranty booklet for 2026 models](https://owners.acura.com/Documentum/Warranty/Handbooks/2026_Acura_Warranty_Basebook.pdf) (form WL-27716) is what any plan is measured against. Under its New Vehicle Limited Warranty, “Acura will repair or replace any part that is defective in material or workmanship under normal use”, free of charge.

**Coverage terms in Acura’s warranty booklet for 2026 models, read on 30 September 2026. Each ends at whichever limit comes first.**

| Coverage | Term | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| New Vehicle Limited Warranty | 4 years or 50,000 miles | Includes the 12-volt battery |
| Key fob batteries; wiper blade inserts | First 6 months | Original equipment |
| Wheel balancing and alignment | 1 year or 12,000 miles | Unless part of a warranty repair |
| Air conditioner refrigerant | 2 years or 24,000 miles | Unless part of a warranty repair |
| Powertrain Limited Warranty | 6 years or 70,000 miles | Engine, transmission, drive systems |
| Federal emissions | 4 years or 50,000 miles | Longer on selected parts |
| California emissions defects | 7 years or 70,000 miles | Specially noted parts, in states that follow California |
| Seat belts | 15 years or 150,000 miles | Belts that fail to function properly |
| Rust perforation | 5 years, no mileage limit | Original owner or lessee only |
| Replacement 12-volt battery | 100 months | Free for 36 months, then a credit |
| Remanufactured parts | 3 years or 36,000 miles | Installed by an Acura dealer |

What the booklet leaves out is close to what Acura Care leaves out: normal wear, cleaning, glass that isn’t defective, and maintenance items such as filters and brake pads replaced for wear. It also rules out “any incidental expenses or inconvenience incurred due to the loss of use of your vehicle”, a gap the 2014 contract’s rental allowance filled, since it paid for rentals during factory warranty repairs too.

Three of its rules matter for any plan. There is no warranty on a car that has “ever been declared a total loss or sold for salvage”, or that has a salvage or similar title, apart from emissions, seat belts, replacement parts and recalls, so check a used Acura’s [title history](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/what-is-a-salvage-title/) first. An altered odometer is excluded too. And “parts that fail because they did not get proper, timely maintenance are not covered”, though dealer service “is not mandatory for continued warranty coverage”; keep dated receipts with the mileage.

The booklet adds that Acura “may cover, on a case-by-case basis” some repairs its warranties don’t, and sometimes runs special adjustment programs. A certified car carries more: Precision Certified extends powertrain cover to “7 years or 100,000 total odometer miles” from the original in-service date, and adds 2 years of non-powertrain cover after the new-car warranty, or from the sale if that warranty is already over.

**Figure: Annotated photograph**

Three numbered callouts over the photograph mark the mileage display, a warning light and the fuel gauge, with what Acura's brochures and its 2014 contract say.

Acura's 2015 brochure starts a New plan when the car is originally put into service, at zero miles (callout 1); the 2014 contract excluded failures where the car was driven on after the oil pressure or temperature warning (callout 2); and the 2023 brochure prints trip interruption of up to $300 a day for 3 days, more than 100 miles from home (callout 3). The photograph is illustrative.

## Rental cars, trip interruption and roadside help: the printed caps

**Rental car.** The 2023 brochure says Acura Care “may reimburse your rental-car expenses up to $45 a day, for a maximum of 6 days” when the car needs a covered repair; the ZDX and 2015 brochures print the same. At the caps that is $270, our arithmetic, and the 2014 contract printed the same ceiling. It also shows how days were counted: by the flat-rate time Acura allows for the repair. A repair timed at 0.1 to 8.0 hours earned 2 days and $90; only a job over 32.0 hours earned all 6.

**Trip interruption.** The 2023 brochure covers “meals and lodging up to $300 a day for a maximum of 3 days” when a covered repair or a factory warranty repair strands you more than 100 miles from home: $900 at the caps, our arithmetic. The ZDX and 2025 Sentinel brochures print the same terms. Older paperwork is less generous. The 2015 brochure prints “up to $100 a day for up to 3 days”, with $300 a day only on Certified Additional Coverage, and the 2014 contract capped most plans at $100 a day and $300 in all, Certified Additional at $900. The 2023 daily cap is three times the 2015 one on most plans. We don’t reconcile the editions; your contract says which applies.

**Roadside and concierge.** The 2023 brochure lists 24-hour roadside assistance, towing, lockout help, jump-starts, tire changes and fuel delivery. The 2015 edition caps roadside service at “Up to $100 per occurrence; does not include parts”, and adds a Family Plan, for model year 2015 and newer, covering up to 5 Acura or Honda passenger vehicles or Honda motorcycles at one household address. The benefits come through Cross Country Motor Club, whose guidelines the FAQ still cites. Concierge help books hotels and rental cars, but “any third party costs” are yours.

Against Honda Care, Acura’s caps are higher. Honda’s 2023 brochure prints $35 a day for 6 days on rentals, $210 in all, and $100 a day for 3 days on trips, $300 in all. Acura’s come to $60 and $600 more, by our arithmetic. Honda’s brochure also contradicts itself on its level count, “Six Kinds of Care” in the heading and “five levels of coverage” in the text; Acura’s says six and lists six.

## Deductible and price: the numbers Acura doesn’t print

No Acura or Acura Financial Services document we read prints a price for any Acura Care product, or a deductible for the contract on an Acura. The 2014 contract says where the deductible lives: it is “the amount of the REPAIR COST YOU must pay for each visit for repair of one or more MECHANICAL BREAKDOWNS”, printed on your identification page. One deductible covers several failures fixed in one visit.

Two figures in the rack are easy to mistake for Acura Care deductibles. The $100 “disappearing deductible”, waived when the selling dealer does the repair, belongs to Safe-Guard’s contract for other makes. “Absolutely no deductible” belongs to Term Protection. Neither tells you what your Acura contract charges.

The brochures describe payment, not price. The 2023 edition points you to “affordable financing” through the dealer, and the FAQ says a plan can go into a finance or lease agreement bought at the same time. The add-on brochures say “These products are not required for you to obtain financing for the purchase or lease of a vehicle.” Our guides explain [why there is no sticker price](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-car-warranty-cost/#no-sticker) and [where the markup comes from](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-car-warranty-cost/#markup): the number comes from the dealer, and it is negotiable.

## What Acura Care doesn’t cover

The lender’s FAQ prints the short list, in the same words as the 2015 brochure: “Exclusions include, but are not limited to, body parts, tires, maintenance items, glass, upholstery, trim, carpeting and ornamentation. Claims cannot exceed the cash value of the vehicle.”

The 2014 contract’s list is longer. It excluded wiper blades, the battery (except the nickel metal hydride battery in hybrids), belts and hoses, spark plugs, the exhaust system and catalytic converter, brake rotors and pads, the clutch disc, glass, body parts, paint, most bulbs, tires and wheels, and interior trim. It also refused any repair:

- caused by skipped maintenance, or by driving on after the oil pressure or temperature warning came on;
- caused by an aftermarket performance part or other non-authorized part;
- for a condition that existed when the contract was bought;
- covered by any warranty, other service contract or insurance, or done outside the United States or Canada;
- where the owner couldn’t produce maintenance records for the failed part, or the odometer had been altered;
- on a car used commercially, unless the Commercial Use Option had been bought.

One cap differs between the documents. The FAQ says claims “cannot exceed the cash value of the vehicle”; the 2014 contract capped total liability at “the amount YOU paid for YOUR VEHICLE.” Your contract’s wording is the one that counts.

Some excluded wear items are what Term Protection sells, once each, for up to 4 years or 60,000 miles from purchase. It can be bought only in the first 12 months or 12,000 miles after the new-car warranty starts, so it ends no more than 5 years after that start, our arithmetic. It runs alongside the factory warranty, and it is Safe-Guard’s contract.

## Getting a repair paid, and what happens in a dispute

The 2023 brochure says repairs are done by factory-trained Acura technicians with Acura Genuine parts, and that if no Acura dealership is within towing distance, repairs “may be made at an Acura Care-authorized service center.”

The 2014 contract set out the procedure. Take the car to your dealer, or the nearest Acura dealer in the United States or Canada. In an emergency when neither is possible, get prior authorization from the administrator “BEFORE INCURRING ANY REPAIR COSTS”. Authorize the teardown, which the contract paid for only if the failure was covered, and pay the deductible to the shop. Keep “the original receipts or invoices confirming all maintenance has been performed”, because a missing record for a failed part was grounds to refuse the claim.

Disputes under the contract and under the factory warranty follow different routes. The 2014 contract said any claim “shall be settled by arbitration according to the Commercial Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association”; a current contract’s dispute terms aren’t published. The 2026 booklet’s route for the factory warranty runs through the dealer, Acura Client Relations and the National Center for Dispute Settlement, which is free, generally resolves disputes within 40 days (47 if you haven’t first contacted Acura), and whose decision “is not binding on you unless you agree to accept it”. In place of a court, the booklet’s agreement to arbitrate sends disputes to a single arbitration under the AAA’s Consumer Arbitration Rules. Apart from initial filing fees up to a maximum of $250, Acura pays the AAA fees, and the hearing is in your federal district. Small claims court remains an option.

**The 30-day opt-out.** The booklet lets you opt out of arbitration within 30 days after the car is delivered, by letter to Acura’s Office of the General Counsel with your name, VIN and intent to opt out. Otherwise the agreement to arbitrate is binding. That clause is the factory warranty’s; an Acura Care contract has its own dispute terms, so read them separately.

## Selling the car, or cancelling the plan

The FAQ says that if you sell the car, “Honda Care and Acura Care are transferable” to the new owner, “Transfer fees may apply”, and “You also have the option to cancel and get a pro-rated refund.” The 2014 contract gave the mechanics, which are worth checking against your own:

- **Transfer.** Once, by the original buyer, to a private buyer of the car within 15 days of the sale, for a $50 fee paid to the dealer, with the maintenance records. Not to a dealer, a dealer’s customer or a lender, and the new owner couldn’t cancel or pass it on.
- **Cancellation.** A full refund within 60 days if no services had been used. After that, the lesser of a time or mileage pro-ration, less a $25 processing fee. In Illinois the fee was capped at the lesser of 10% of the price or $50.
- **Financed plans.** The refund could go to the lender unless you proved the loan was paid off, and after a repossession or total loss the lender could cancel. Transferred contracts couldn’t be refunded, and a cancelled contract couldn’t be reinstated.

The Safe-Guard add-ons are cancelable at any time, subject to a fee after 30 days. Our guides cover [cancelling a plan](https://baronauto1.com/financing/is-an-extended-warranty-worth-it/#cancel) and [how cancellations go wrong](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#cancellation).

## What the complaint file of Acura’s lender shows

No public database records how Acura Care claims are decided. The finance side is public: dealers often sell a service contract inside the car loan, and complaints about those add-ons are filed against the lender. Acura Financial Services is a DBA of American Honda Finance Corporation, so Acura complaints share a CFPB file with Honda’s and can’t be separated; no company name containing “Acura” appears in the product’s company list.

On 30 September 2026 the CFPB held 2,118 vehicle loan or lease complaints against American Honda Finance Corp., received between 25 April 2017 and 29 September 2026: the 14th-largest count among 1,147 companies, and 41.8% of the 5,065 complaints against it across all products. It answered 2,102 on time and 16 late. It closed 1,917 with an explanation, 141 with non-monetary relief and 56 with monetary relief, with 4 in progress. That is 197 with relief, 9.3%, against 9.4% across all 103,865 vehicle loan or lease complaints. A complaint is an allegation, not a finding, and the response is the company’s own label.

163 complaints fall under the two add-on sub-issues, 7.7% of the file against 5.5% across the product. 8 of them closed with relief, 4.9%, against 9.7% for the other 1,955 and 7.9% for add-on complaints across the product. So add-on complaints against this lender close with relief about half as often as its other complaints. Since the CFPB stopped serving narratives on 30 September 2026, we can’t count complaints that mention a service contract in their own words.

## Acura Care, a third-party contract, or neither

Whether a service contract is worth buying at all is covered in [our guide to whether an extended warranty is worth it](https://baronauto1.com/financing/is-an-extended-warranty-worth-it/#worth-it). On an Acura the question narrows to three things.

First, what is already covered: 4 years or 50,000 miles of new-car cover, 6 years or 70,000 miles on the powertrain, and on a Precision Certified car, powertrain cover to 7 years or 100,000 miles. A New or Certified plan starts on the car’s first day, so price it by the years and miles it adds past those points. Second, who stands behind it: American Honda Protection Products Corporation for the Acura contract, Safe-Guard for the add-ons, and whoever a third-party plan names. For each, ask who the obligor is and whether it is registered where you live; our guide to [what a state register will tell you](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#check-the-register) shows how. Third, the price, which nothing Acura publishes will tell you. Past Acura Care’s limits, the options are a third-party contract or, from some insurers, [mechanical breakdown insurance](https://baronauto1.com/financing/mechanical-breakdown-insurance/).

- **Check the provider line.** On an Acura it should be American Honda Protection Products Corporation, or American Honda Service Contract Corp. in Florida.
- **Get the start and end dates in writing.** New and Certified plans count from the first in-service date at zero miles; Pre-Owned and Powertrain plans from the day you buy.
- **Get the missing numbers.** Term, mileage limit, deductible per visit and price belong on the contract, because no Acura brochure prints them.
- **Buy used and certified plans with the car.** The FAQ ties them to the vehicle purchase.
- **Read the trip and rental clauses.** Is the trip benefit $300 a day or $100, and how are rental days counted?
- **Keep every maintenance receipt.** A missing record for the failed part can sink a claim.
- **Settle cancellation before you sign.** A financed plan’s refund can go to the lender.
- **Decide about arbitration.** The factory warranty’s opt-out letter is due within 30 days of delivery.

Calls saying your Acura warranty is about to expire are a separate matter. In 2022 the FTC sued American Vehicle Protection Corp., a Florida seller it alleged had falsely claimed to be, or to be associated with, consumers’ carmakers or dealers, and had promised bumper-to-bumper or full coverage that was much more limited than represented. A stipulated order in March 2023 and a further order that July banned defendants from selling extended auto warranties and from outbound telemarketing. In 2024 the FTC sent more than $449,000 in refunds to consumers. See [what regulators have done](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#enforcement).

## Common questions

### How much does the Acura extended warranty cost?

Acura doesn’t publish a price. The 2023 brochure prints no price, term or deductible, and the lender’s FAQ prints only the longest term, 8 years/120,000 miles. The price comes from a dealer quote, varies with the car, plan, term and deductible, and is negotiable. Our guide to [extended car warranty cost](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-car-warranty-cost/) explains what moves it.

### When does Acura Care start?

A New or Certified plan counts from the car’s original in-service date at zero miles, not the day you buy it. A Pre-Owned or Powertrain plan starts on the purchase date, at that day’s odometer reading. On a new car, the FAQ says repair cover begins “right after the Honda or Acura Limited Warranty expires”, while some benefits start at purchase.

### Can I buy Acura Care after I buy the car?

For a used or certified car, the FAQ says Acura Care is available “at the time of vehicle purchase”. For a new car, no current Acura document prints a deadline, but a New plan counts from the first in-service date whenever you buy it. The 2014 application let a Pre-Owned plan be bought later only while the car was inside 48 months and 50,000 miles from that date.

### Is Acura Care transferable?

Yes. The FAQ says it transfers to the new owner when you sell the car, and that transfer fees may apply. The 2014 contract allowed one transfer, to a private buyer, within 15 days of the sale, for $50.

### Can I cancel Acura Care and get a refund?

Yes. The FAQ says you can cancel for a pro-rated refund. Under the 2014 contract, cancelling within 60 days with no services used brought a full refund; later, the lesser of a time or mileage pro-ration, less a $25 fee.

### Is Acura Care the same as Honda Care?

They come from the same provider and share one FAQ, which gives both the same longest term, 8 years/120,000 miles. The brochures differ: Acura’s 2023 edition prints $45 a day for rentals and $300 a day for trip interruption, against Honda’s $35 and $100.
