# Lincoln Extended Warranty: Lincoln Protect Plans and Terms

> Lincoln's extended warranty is Lincoln Protect. Who owes the repair, when coverage starts, which terms end inside the factory warranty, what each plan covers.

## The short version

- Lincoln’s extended warranty is Lincoln Protect, a service contract sold in four plans: PremiumCARE, ExtraCARE, BaseCARE and PowertrainCARE. The contract names Ford Motor Service Company as the company that owes your repair, or Ford Motor Company in North Dakota, Nebraska and Washington, though Lincoln’s pages say “100% Backed by Lincoln Motor Company”.
- A new-vehicle plan starts on the day the car was first delivered, at zero miles, not when the 4-year, 50,000-mile factory warranty ends. It has to be bought before that warranty runs out.
- Three terms offered on the comprehensive plans, among them 4 years or 48,000 miles, end no later than Lincoln’s own Bumper to Bumper warranty. The only term blocked on those plans, 3 years or 36,000 miles, matches a Ford’s bumper-to-bumper warranty, not a Lincoln’s.
- PowertrainCARE lists fewer parts than Lincoln’s 6-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty: no electric fuel pump, engine or transmission mounts, powertrain control module or drive bearings.
- No Lincoln document prints a price, and Lincoln’s documents give three different maximum terms. The standard deductible is $100 per repair visit, and a financed plan’s refund is paid to the lender first.

The Lincoln extended warranty is Lincoln Protect, a vehicle service contract sold through Lincoln and Ford dealers and at lincolnprotect.lincoln.com. It isn’t the factory warranty that comes with the car; it is a separate purchase with its own contract. This page works from that contract (the national, California and Florida editions dated October 2023, all served from Lincoln’s plan site), the four plan brochures, the plan site and its FAQ, the Continued Service Plan buyer guide, lincoln.com’s Lincoln Protect help pages and the 2025, 2026 and 2027 Lincoln warranty guides, all read on 1 October 2026. Where they disagree, both sides are quoted.

**Figure: Which Lincoln Protect terms can outlast Lincoln's own warranty**

A two-column table of the new-plan terms in the Lincoln Protect brochures, from the term no tier offers to the terms that end inside Lincoln's factory warranty and those that run past it.

From the four Lincoln Protect brochures (new-plan grids, printed October 2023) and Lincoln's 2027 Warranty Guide; Ford's terms as our Ford page records them. Both a plan and a warranty end at whichever limit comes first, so terms are compared by end points. Our arithmetic; the contract you sign governs.

## Who owes the repair: Ford Motor Service Company

The most useful line in any service contract is the one naming the obligor, the company bound to pay your claim. Lincoln Protect’s contract puts it first: all obligations “are between Ford Motor Service Company, the Service Contract Provider” and you. In most states they are backed by that company’s own full faith and credit and “are not guaranteed under a service contract reimbursement policy.” If you live in North Dakota, Nebraska or Washington, the provider is Ford Motor Company instead. Our guide to [who actually owes you the repair](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#who-owes-you) explains each role.

Insurance backs the promise in some states only, and the contract words it two ways. Section 1D says that in Iowa, Indiana, Maryland, North Dakota, Nebraska, Washington and Wisconsin a reimbursement policy from The American Road Insurance Company guarantees the provider’s obligations, so a covered claim left unpaid for sixty days can go to the insurer directly. Section 1C, describing the same seven states, limits the insured obligations to “Competitive Make Products”, meaning cars that aren’t Fords or Lincolns. If you live in one of them, ask which reading applies. Claims are administered by Percepta Philippines and Percepta LLC everywhere except Florida and Utah, where Ford Motor Service Company administers its own.

Florida is where Lincoln’s documents part company. All four brochures say that in Florida, Lincoln Protect “is a Service Contract from Ford Motor Service Company”. The Florida edition of the contract, which Lincoln’s plan site also serves, says its obligations are “between Ford Motor Company, the Service Contract Provider” and you, with Ford Motor Service Company serving as administrator. A Florida buyer should check which name is on the contract they sign.

Every brochure says the coverage is “100% backed by The Lincoln Motor Company”, and the home page says much the same. Lincoln’s 2027 warranty guide is more exact: Lincoln Protect contracts “are backed by Ford Motor Company or subsidiaries of Ford Motor Company (examples are but not limited to: Ford Motor Service Company or the American Road Insurance Company).” The contract never makes Lincoln a party. It gives its address as “Ford/Lincoln Protect Headquarters”, covers Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, and is byte for byte the file fordprotect.ford.com serves for Ford Protect, which our [Ford extended warranty guide](https://baronauto1.com/financing/ford-extended-warranty/) covers.

## The four Lincoln Protect plans and what each one adds

The plan page gives each plan a component count; the contract lists the parts. Each tier includes everything in the tiers below it.

**The four Lincoln Protect plans, from the plan page (component counts) and the national contract, form FPLP 8250 - NAT W/KEY (OCT 2023), sections 5A to 5D, read on 1 October 2026. Counts are Lincoln Protect’s own figures.**

| Plan | Components, by Lincoln Protect’s count | What the contract lists |
| --- | --- | --- |
| PowertrainCARE | 29 | Engine block, heads and internal lubricated parts, a factory turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain, oil and water pumps; transmission and transfer case; drive housings, axle shafts and joints. “Fuel injection components are not covered.” |
| BaseCARE | 84 | Adds steering, front suspension, brakes (not drums, rotors, linings or pads), air conditioning, and electrical parts including the alternator, starter, fuel pump and wiring harnesses |
| ExtraCARE | 113 | Adds fuel injectors, the radiator and fan, heater core and blower, the electronic instrument cluster, keyless entry, power seats, windows and locks, the anti-lock brake module, air suspension electronics and the engine and transmission mounts |
| PremiumCARE | 1000+ | “All Failures are covered EXCEPT” the contract’s exclusions |

Treat the counts as marketing figures. A plan pays because a failed part is on its list or, for PremiumCARE, because no exclusion catches it. The contract also describes coverages the plan page doesn’t list: LeaseCARE, which adds wear items to PremiumCARE; a Powertrain Wrap, which is PremiumCARE for everything except PowertrainCARE’s parts, for the original holder only; and an L-CPO upgrade, PremiumCARE bought on a Lincoln for a longer term. Lincoln Protect also sells a Premium Maintenance Plan, sold in 5,000, 7,500 or 10,000-mile intervals, and dealer plans such as TireCARE Plus and WindshieldCARE that are sold “at the time of vehicle purchase only”. Each is a separate contract, and a quote that rolls several into one monthly figure is worth pulling apart.

## When the clock starts: delivery day, at zero miles

For new plans, the contract says coverage “begins at the New Vehicle Limited Warranty Start Date and Zero Miles” and ends at the months or miles bought, counted from that date. The FAQ and all four brochures agree. Lincoln’s guide defines the start date as the day you take delivery or the day the car is first put into service, for example as a dealer demonstrator, whichever comes first. A plan bought a year after delivery still started on delivery day. That date isn’t in the VIN; our [guide to warranty checks by VIN](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/vin-warranty-check/#in-service) explains where it is recorded.

The FAQ says new plans “must be purchased within the time and mileage of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty”: 4 years or 50,000 miles for Lincoln vehicles, 3 years or 36,000 miles for Fords. Because the term counts from delivery, buying later leaves less of it. The longest term in the brochures’ grids is 10 years; bought on the last day of a 4-year window, it has at most 6 years left. That subtraction is ours.

Used plans run on a different clock. On a Lincoln that still has factory warranty left, a used plan begins on the day you sign, but the contract counts its term “from the expiration of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty”, so the months bought come after the factory warranty instead of during it. If Bumper to Bumper ends on time at 4 years, the longest used term, 6 years, could run to year 10 (our arithmetic). On a car with no factory warranty left, or another make, a used plan starts and counts from the signature date. Used terms run from 1 year or 10,000 miles (6 months or 6,000 miles on BaseCARE and PowertrainCARE) up to 6 years or 75,000 miles, “for Model Year 2010 and newer vehicles.”

A new plan can be changed before the factory warranty expires or within 90 days of signing. The same section prints a $100 “12/12 Surcharge” for coverage bought after the first 12 months or 12,000 miles, and a $200 fee nearer the warranty’s end, which the Florida edition calls charges “for changes to coverage”. A surcharge on a first purchase needs explaining.

## The term grid: three offered terms end inside Lincoln’s own warranty

Each brochure prints a grid of new-plan terms, 3 to 10 years across and 36,000 to 175,000 miles down (PremiumCARE adds an 85,000 row); “coverage ends at the earlier of years or mileage.” Some cells are marked “Not offered.” We set every offered cell against the factory term it follows: Bumper to Bumper for the first three plans, the powertrain warranty for PowertrainCARE.

**The new-plan grids in the four Lincoln Protect brochures (printed October 2023), set against the 2027 Lincoln guide: 4 years or 50,000 miles for the first three plans, 6 years or 70,000 miles for PowertrainCARE. “Ends no later” means the cell’s years and miles are both at or below the factory term’s. Our arithmetic.**

| Plan | Cells offered | Ends no later than the factory term | Outlasts it on miles only | On time only | On both |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| PremiumCARE | 71 of 72 | 3 | 14 | 12 | 42 |
| ExtraCARE | 63 of 64 | 3 | 12 | 12 | 36 |
| BaseCARE | 63 of 64 | 3 | 12 | 12 | 36 |
| PowertrainCARE | 55 of 64 | 3 | 20 | 12 | 20 |

The three comprehensive terms that end no later than Lincoln’s Bumper to Bumper warranty are 3 years or 48,000 miles, 4 years or 36,000 miles and 4 years or 48,000 miles: on any driving pattern, the factory warranty is still running the day the plan ends. PowertrainCARE’s three are the 6-year terms at 36,000, 48,000 and 60,000 miles, all inside the 6-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. The “miles only” and “time only” terms outlast the factory warranty for some drivers only: an 8-year, 48,000-mile plan outlasts Bumper to Bumper only on a car that turns four before it reaches 48,000 miles.

The blocked cells show where the grid came from. On the three comprehensive plans the only blocked cell is 3 years or 36,000 miles, the Ford term the Lincoln Protect FAQ quotes. On PowertrainCARE the nine blocked cells are every term of 3 to 5 years at 60,000 miles or less, exactly those that would end inside a Ford’s 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, as our Ford page records it. The grid blocks terms that end inside a Ford’s warranty, not a Lincoln’s.

What the inside terms still buy is the extras. The contract excludes repairs “covered by manufacturer recalls, insurance or in-force warranty”, so the plan’s mechanical cover mostly waits while the factory warranty runs. Its rental benefit does pay during factory repairs, since the contract extends it to failures under “the Manufacturer’s Limited Warranty”.

**Read the end date, not the term.** Have the dealer print the date and odometer reading at which the plan ends, and compare them with 4 years and 50,000 miles from the car’s delivery day. If the plan ends first on both, its mechanical cover never outlasts the factory warranty.

Lincoln’s documents also disagree on how far the grid goes. The 2025 to 2027 warranty guides say “up to 8 years and 150,000 miles”, and the plan page’s PremiumCARE card gives the same limit; the same page’s header and all four brochures say 10 years or 175,000 miles, where the grids end; the “Why Buy a Plan?” page says 10 years or 170,000 miles. The term on your quote and contract is the one that counts.

## What a new Lincoln already carries

The factory warranty is the baseline every plan should be priced against. Lincoln’s 2027 guide, printed in March 2026, describes coverage “provided by Ford Motor Company under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.” We compared its nine coverage terms with the 2026 and 2025 guides; none changed.

**Coverage terms in Lincoln’s 2027 Model Year Warranty Guide, read on 1 October 2026. Each ends at whichever limit comes first; the 2026 and 2025 guides print the same terms.**

| Coverage | Term | What it covers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bumper to Bumper | 4 years or 50,000 miles | Parts that fail in normal use from a manufacturing defect |
| Powertrain | 6 years or 70,000 miles | The engine, transmission and drive parts the guide lists |
| Safety Restraint System | 5 years or 60,000 miles | Safety belts and airbags |
| Corrosion | 5 years, unlimited miles | Perforation of body sheet metal panels |
| Hybrid/Electric Unique Component | 8 years or 100,000 miles | The electrical drivetrain; gradual battery capacity loss excluded |
| Federal emissions | 8 years or 80,000 miles; 2 years or 24,000 miles | Catalytic converters and other listed parts; all other covered parts |
| California emissions | 3 years or 50,000 miles; 7 years or 70,000 miles | California coverage; the longer term for specially noted parts |

Against a Ford’s factory warranty, which our Ford page records as 3 years or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper and 5 years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain, Lincoln’s terms reach 1 year and 14,000 miles further at the Bumper to Bumper end point and 1 year and 10,000 miles further on the powertrain. Those are differences between end points, and our arithmetic. Ford’s figure even survives in Lincoln’s own guides: all three still say, in their emissions section, that “Ford’s 3-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage, as described above, surpasses this mandatory federal coverage.”

After Bumper to Bumper ends, the powertrain warranty runs on to 6 years or 70,000 miles: 2 years and 20,000 miles further at the end points, though no car gets both. In that window almost nothing but the engine, transmission and drive parts is covered; our comparison of [powertrain and bumper-to-bumper coverage](https://baronauto1.com/buying-guides/powertrain-vs-bumper-to-bumper-warranty/) sets out the split.

PowertrainCARE is the plan sold to carry that cover further, and its list is shorter than the warranty it follows:

**Parts named in the 2027 Lincoln guide’s 6-year, 70,000-mile powertrain coverage, and the lowest Lincoln Protect tier whose contract covers each. The matching of wording is ours.**

| Part in Lincoln’s powertrain warranty | Listed by PowertrainCARE? | Lowest tier that covers it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Engine internals, block and heads | Yes | PowertrainCARE |
| Turbocharger, water pump, timing chain | Yes | PowertrainCARE |
| Transmission internals, torque converter, transfer case | Yes | PowertrainCARE |
| Electric fuel pump | No; “fuel injection components are not covered” | BaseCARE |
| Engine and transmission mounts | No | ExtraCARE |
| Powertrain control module | No | PremiumCARE: no tier list names it |
| Bearings (front and rear), center support bearing | No | PremiumCARE |

Some wear items get short free cover: alignment, balancing and bulbs for 12 months or 12,000 miles, brake pads and linings for 12 months or 18,000 miles. After that they are maintenance, and the plans exclude them too. A used Lincoln keeps whatever is left of each factory term; a buyer of a used 2027 model is “eligible for any remaining warranty coverages.”

## Deductibles, rental cars and roadside: what the plan adds

New plans carry a standard $100 deductible, with $0, $50, $200 and “Disappearing” options; used plans carry $100 with $50, $200 or Disappearing, since the $0 option “is not available on Used Mechanical Plan Coverages.” The deductible is charged “for each Eligible Repair Visit, regardless of the number of Failures to be repaired”, and a disappearing deductible is waived when the selling dealer does the repair.

Rental cover is what the factory warranty lacks: the guide says Ford and the dealer are not responsible for “the cost of rental vehicles”. The contract pays up to $60 a day including tax, $72 on the Aviator, MKT and Navigator, for up to 10 days or until the repair is done: $600 per repair at most, or $720 on those models, on our arithmetic. It applies to failures covered by the plan, the factory warranty or a recall, from the day an inoperable car is delivered for service. A First Day Rental Delete option pays only if the car is kept overnight; an Enhanced Rental Delete cuts the Lincoln cap to $45 a day.

Roadside is where a plan overlaps most with what Lincoln already gives. The contract covers lockouts, tire changes, jump starts, towing and 2 gallons of fuel, to $100 per disablement, with fuel limited to 3 no-charge calls in a 12-month period, plus up to $1000 of emergency travel expenses in the first 5 days after a breakdown 100 or more miles from home, and $75 toward reaching your destination. Lincoln Roadside Assistance already pays the same $1000 for up to 5 days, and “lasts the life of the vehicle for the original owner only”; later owners have it to 6 years or 70,000 miles. Lincoln Protect’s CSP buyer guide itself warns that, since most people already have roadside assistance through their car insurance, having it in a repair plan “could be duplicative”.

Key Services, an option, replaces keys or fobs that are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, capped by the contract at $800 a year. Pickup & Delivery is an option on new PremiumCARE within a 20-mile radius of the selling dealer, though every new Lincoln already gets 4 years or 50,000 miles of it, with a complimentary loaner for up to two days. Over all of it sits one cap: the provider’s total liability “shall not exceed the Retail Value of Your Vehicle immediately prior to the break down.”

## What Lincoln Protect costs: no document prints a price

None of the documents read for this page prints a price. Lincoln’s help page says “pricing depends on your vehicle, the length of the plan, and the coverage level you want”. The plan site quotes online, except for California, where the contract says “Internet sales are not permitted”. Commercial use, including a vehicle “used primarily for business purposes”, carries a surcharge. Our guides to [why there is no sticker price](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-car-warranty-cost/#no-sticker) and [where the markup comes from](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-car-warranty-cost/#markup) explain how the number is set, and why it can be negotiated.

What the brochures do print is repair costs, to sell the plan: an engine at $8,742, a transmission at $4,799, a headlamp and taillamp assembly at $3,170, a steering gear at $2,427, an air conditioning evaporator core at $1,595 and an instrument cluster at $1,540, each “based on an average estimated U.S. retail repair cost for a Lincoln Nautilus.” Those are Lincoln Protect’s figures. The headlamp line deserves a second look, since lamp cover depends on an option.

The plan site offers interest-free installments for up to 30 months on most plans when the plan isn’t in the car’s financing. A plan included in the car loan is financed with the car, and its refund goes to the lender.

## What no Lincoln Protect plan covers

PremiumCARE covers everything not excluded, so the exclusions, a) to z) in the contract, are the real coverage document. The ones a Lincoln owner is most likely to meet:

- **Wear items:** brake pads and linings, spark plugs, engine belts, coolant hoses, wiper blades and shock absorbers or struts, unless the plan is LeaseCARE.
- **Batteries, brakes, exhaust, software:** “Batteries of all types and cables, brakes (front hub, drums, shoes, linings, disc rotors, pads), exhaust system (includes catalytic converter), and software upgrades”.
- **Body and glass:** fixed body parts, glass, paint, rust, mirrors, rattles, water leaks, tires, wheel balancing and alignment.
- **Lamps:** bulbs and HID and LED lamp assemblies, unless the lighting option was bought.
- **Causes:** aftermarket parts such as lift kits and oversized tires, aftermarket PCM reprogramming, lack of required maintenance, and conditions that existed before you signed.
- **Knock-on damage:** “Repairs needed to a covered part caused by the Failure of a non-covered part”, and the teardown and diagnosis of failures that turn out not to be covered.

**Figure: Annotated photograph**

Three numbered callouts over the photograph mark the start button, the switch strip and an air vent, with which Lincoln Protect plans cover each.

The Lincoln Protect contract pays for lost, stolen or damaged keys and fobs only under the Key Services option, up to $800 a year (callout 1); BaseCARE's electrical list names manually operated electrical switches, which PowertrainCARE's list does not (callout 2); and automatic temperature control first appears in ExtraCARE's list, with PremiumCARE covering all failures it doesn't exclude (callout 3). The photograph is illustrative; a drive-mode button's lettering has been softened.

On wear and tear, Lincoln’s documents disagree. The plan page says “Failure of covered components due to defects in materials and workmanship and normal wear and tear are included.” Lincoln’s help page says “Normal wear and tear are not included”, then says in its PremiumCARE row that it is. The contract defines a Failure as one arising from defects “or caused by normal wear and tear covered by this Agreement”, and separately excludes its named list of Wear Items.

On lamps, the contract contradicts itself. Section 6C describes a “Lighting Delete” you elect to remove lamp cover, implying lamps are in by default; exclusion o) excludes them “except when Interior/Exterior Lighting Option is purchased”; the plan page says lamp coverage is “included only if the Lighting option is purchased.” Check the lighting box on your own contract before counting on the $3,170 headlamp example.

Title history decides more than any of these. The contract excludes “Branded Vehicles”, meaning a title showing salvage, a theft or an insurer’s finding that the damage exceeded the car’s value, and any car whose factory warranty the manufacturer has voided. Lincoln’s guide voids that warranty on any vehicle ever branded dismantled, fire, flood, junk, rebuilt, reconstructed or salvaged, or declared a total loss. A [salvage or rebuilt title](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/what-is-a-salvage-title/) therefore takes the plan with it. Used plans also exclude limousines, livery and shuttle vehicles.

## Making a claim, and disputing a refusal

On a Lincoln, the contract requires repairs at the selling dealer “or any other Ford or Lincoln franchised dealership in the United States, Canada or Mexico”. In an emergency you may use another shop if all Ford and Lincoln dealers within a 25 mile radius are closed, and you have one year to ask for reimbursement. The provider may inspect the car before authorizing a repair.

Keep the maintenance records. Coverage depends on proof of scheduled maintenance: records showing mileage, date, VIN and the work done, or, if you service the car yourself, a log with receipts. The California edition says a claim “will not be denied solely due to Your inability to provide complete Proof of Scheduled Maintenance Services”.

The parts promise depends on the document. The plan page says “Repairs are made with genuine Lincoln parts”. The contract says repairs use “Ford authorized new or remanufactured parts or other products We authorize, including parts not produced by the manufacturer of Your Vehicle”, and may offer cash if parts are unavailable.

If a claim is refused, either side may take it to non-binding arbitration run by the Better Business Bureau. You give up class arbitration, the BBB charges a $50 filing fee if you start it, and the provider won’t pay your attorney’s fees; in Washington, arbitration is binding. The factory warranty has its own route: Lincoln’s guide requires a dispute to go to BBB AUTO LINE before a Magnuson-Moss claim, and says decisions usually come within forty days.

## Transferring, cancelling, and where the refund goes

The plans transfer for a $75 fee ($40 in Florida), started within 180 days of the car’s sale. The FAQ adds that fees vary by state and that an installment plan must be paid in full first. There is no transfer if the car becomes a branded vehicle or is repossessed, “Transferred Agreements may not be cancelled”, and a Powertrain Wrap “is not transferable to any subsequent vehicle owner.”

You can cancel at any time. A written request on or before the 30th day after signing, with no claim filed, gets the full price back. After that, the contract divides the price “by the number of miles or months of coverage provided by this Agreement, whichever is greater”, multiplies by “the remaining unused miles or months, whichever is less”, and deducts a $75 cancellation fee, with the refund due within 45 days. California’s edition allows 60 days for a full refund and caps the later fee at 10% of the price or $25, whichever is less; Florida’s also allows 60 days. lincoln.com says every Lincoln Protect plan can be cancelled “except for the Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Warranty.”

**A financed plan refunds the lender first.** If you financed the plan, the contract makes any refund “payable to the lienholder, up to the amount of the lien”, and only the excess comes to you. If the plan is in your car loan, check the payoff balance after cancelling to confirm the credit arrived.

Cancellations go through the selling dealer, or Lincoln Protect’s administration department if that dealer has closed. Our guides cover [cancelling a plan](https://baronauto1.com/financing/is-an-extended-warranty-worth-it/#cancel) and [how cancellations go wrong](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#cancellation), and our Ford page shows [how a refund routed through a lender can stall](https://baronauto1.com/financing/ford-extended-warranty/#refunds).

## When the plan ends: the Continued Service Plan

For cars whose factory warranty or plan has ended, Lincoln Protect sells a Continued Service Plan. Its buyer guide says enrollment is open up to 12 model years and 140,000 miles and the plans cover vehicles up to 14 model years old and 160,000 miles, with no waiting period or inspection. There are 2 plans: Ultimate, described as “an exclusionary plan”, and Standard Plus, which covers listed parts. It isn’t sold in California.

The CSP documents disagree on who issues it. The web page says that in North Dakota, Nebraska, Washington and Texas, CSP is a service contract “from Lincoln Motor Service Company”; the buyer guide names Ford Motor Service Company for the same states. No other document read here mentions a Lincoln Motor Service Company, so check the provider on the CSP contract itself. Past those limits, the routes left are a third-party contract or [mechanical breakdown insurance](https://baronauto1.com/financing/mechanical-breakdown-insurance/).

## Lincoln Protect, a third-party contract, or neither

Whether a service contract is worth buying at all is covered in [our guide to whether an extended warranty is worth it](https://baronauto1.com/financing/is-an-extended-warranty-worth-it/#worth-it). On a Lincoln it comes down to four questions.

**What do you already have?** Bumper to Bumper cover to 4 years or 50,000 miles, powertrain cover to 6 years or 70,000 miles, roadside assistance for life if you are the original owner, and pickup and delivery with a loaner for 4 years or 50,000 miles. Price a plan by what it adds after those end points.

**Which term?** A new plan counts from delivery day. Three comprehensive terms and three PowertrainCARE terms end inside the factory warranty.

**Which tier?** PowertrainCARE leaves out parts Lincoln’s powertrain warranty covers. BaseCARE adds the fuel pump, ExtraCARE the mounts, and only PremiumCARE reaches the powertrain control module and drive bearings.

**Who stands behind it?** Lincoln Protect names Ford Motor Service Company, or Ford Motor Company in three states and on the Florida edition, and is accepted at every Ford and Lincoln dealer in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. A third-party plan names its own obligor. Ask who it is, whether it is registered where you live, and who decides the claim; our guide to [what a state register will tell you](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#check-the-register) shows how to check.

- **Get the end date in writing.** Compare it with 4 years and 50,000 miles from delivery.
- **Check the obligor line.** It should read Ford Motor Service Company, or Ford Motor Company in North Dakota, Nebraska, Washington and on the Florida edition.
- **Match the tier to the gap.** PowertrainCARE doesn’t list the fuel pump, mounts, powertrain control module or drive bearings.
- **Don’t pay twice for roadside.** Lincoln Roadside Assistance already runs for life for the original owner.
- **Know the refund route.** A full refund needs a written request within 30 days and no claim; a financed plan’s refund goes to the lender.
- **Keep every service record.** The contract asks for mileage, date, VIN and work done.

Calls saying your Lincoln warranty is about to expire are a separate matter. In 2022 the FTC sued American Vehicle Protection Corp., a Florida seller it alleged had falsely claimed to be, or to be associated with, consumers’ carmakers or dealers, and had promised bumper-to-bumper or full coverage that was much more limited than represented. A stipulated order in March 2023 and a further order that July banned defendants from selling extended auto warranties and from outbound telemarketing. In 2024 the FTC sent more than $449,000 in refunds to consumers. See [what regulators have done](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-warranty-companies/#enforcement).

## Common questions

### How much does a Lincoln extended warranty cost?

Lincoln doesn’t publish a price. Its help page says pricing depends on the vehicle, the plan length and the coverage level, and the plan site quotes online except for cars registered in California. The standard deductible is $100 per repair visit. Our guide to [extended car warranty cost](https://baronauto1.com/financing/extended-car-warranty-cost/) explains the rest.

### Is Lincoln Protect the same as Ford Protect?

It runs on the same contract. The terms Lincoln’s plan site serves, form FPLP 8250, are headed “Ford/Lincoln Protect Headquarters”, cover Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles and are the identical file fordprotect.ford.com serves, with the same four plan names. The difference is the car: a Lincoln’s longer factory warranty means the same plan term adds less.

### When does Lincoln Protect coverage start?

A new-vehicle plan starts on the car’s warranty start date, the day it was delivered or first put into service, at zero miles. A used plan starts on the day you sign; on a car that still has factory warranty, its term is counted from the day that warranty expires.

### Can I buy a Lincoln extended warranty after the factory warranty expires?

Not a new-vehicle plan, which must be bought within 4 years or 50,000 miles. Used plans cover model year 2010 and newer vehicles for up to 6 years or 75,000 miles from the day you sign, and the Continued Service Plan enrolls cars up to 12 model years and 140,000 miles, outside California.

### Does Lincoln Protect cover wear and tear?

Partly, and Lincoln’s documents disagree. The plan page says it is included; lincoln.com’s help page says it isn’t, except on PremiumCARE. The contract counts a failure “caused by normal wear and tear covered by this Agreement” but excludes its Wear Items list, such as brake pads, belts, hoses, wiper blades and shocks, unless the plan is LeaseCARE.

### Can I cancel Lincoln Protect and get a refund?

Yes. A written request within 30 days of signing, with no claim filed, gets the full price back, or within 60 days in California and Florida. After that the refund is pro rata less a $75 fee in most states, due within 45 days, and a financed plan’s refund goes to the lender first.
