## What this tool does

Enter each vehicle's fuel economy, your miles per year and your pump prices, and the page computes the gallons and dollars each vehicle burns in a year, the gap between them, and — if the thriftier one costs more to buy — the break-even: how many years and miles before the premium repays at your numbers. That break-even is the whole diesel-versus-gas argument in one figure.

## Why nothing is prefilled

Pump prices move weekly and this site does not reprint perishable figures. The MPG belongs to the vehicle's window sticker or the EPA's published combined figure; the miles and prices are yours. One honest wrinkle from our truck coverage: heavy-duty pickups sit outside EPA fuel-economy labelling entirely, so their figures come from your own logging, not a sticker.

## Limits worth knowing

Fuel is not the whole running-cost gap: maintenance schedules, diesel exhaust fluid and repair costs differ too, and the guides cover them. Real-world economy varies with load, towing and driving — the comparison is only as honest as the MPG figures you feed it.
