# Mileage Check

> Type an odometer reading and see where it sits against real failure mileages parsed from NHTSA owner complaints: the distribution, the percentile landmarks, and which systems' recorded failures typically appeared by that reading.

## What this tool does

Enter the odometer reading of a car you are considering and the page places it against an archived set of real failure mileages — odometer readings stated by owners in NHTSA complaint filings. You see the full distribution in mileage bands, the quartile landmarks, how large a share of recorded failures fell at or below common thresholds, and which component systems' recorded failures typically appeared by your reading (each with its median and sample size).

## How to read it

A complaint is one owner reporting a problem, not a measured failure rate. The sample is also right-censored: newer cars dominate it, so high mileages are under-represented and nothing may be concluded about the upper tail — the page flags the censored bands and says so whenever a high reading is entered. The lower tail is sound, because censoring can add later events but cannot remove early ones.

## Limits worth knowing

Mileage is one input among several: a documented service history moves the odds more than the odometer does, and the specific car's own record — recalls, title, prior damage — matters more than any distribution. This tool frames the question; the VIN checks answer it for one vehicle.
