# Safety Ratings

> Look up the federal crash-test stars for any vehicle: enter a VIN and see NHTSA's overall, frontal, side and rollover ratings for that model year's tested variants — with the comparability caveats the star alone doesn't carry.

## What this tool does

Enter a 17-character VIN and the page decodes it against the federal registry, then pulls NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program results for that model year: the overall star rating and the frontal, side and rollover components, per tested variant — body style and drive layout are rated separately, so a model year can carry more than one set of stars, and the page lets you switch between them.

## How to read the stars

Ratings compare vehicles of similar size and weight — five stars on a small car and five on a heavy SUV are not the same protection. The program was also toughened for 2011-model-year vehicles, so stars from before and after that line do not compare. Both caveats are printed on the result, because the star alone does not carry them.

## Limits worth knowing

NHTSA tests a sample of high-volume vehicles; an unrated variant is not an unsafe one, and the page says "not rated" rather than guessing. The stars describe how the model performed when new — what happened to one specific car since is a records question, which the VIN checks answer.
