## What this tool does

Enter the dealer's trade-in offer and your state's sales-tax rate and the page computes what the offer is actually worth where your state credits the trade against the taxable price of the replacement — and the break-even: the price a private buyer must clear before selling privately nets you more, before the costs of selling are counted. Add your loan payoff and it shows your equity position, with the negative-equity warning where the payoff exceeds the offer.

## Why the credit changes the answer

In states that credit trade-ins, tax applies to the replacement's price minus your trade — so a trade-in offer quietly carries a tax saving on top of its face value, and comparing it to a private-sale price at face value undercounts it. Whether your state offers the credit is the first thing to check, and the toggle exists because the answer genuinely varies.

## Limits worth knowing

Arithmetic on your numbers, nothing more: no fee amounts or rates are prefilled, because printed figures go stale. The break-even ignores what selling privately costs you in listing, reconditioning and time — the guides cover those — and the credit assumes the replacement costs at least as much as the offer.
