Positions four to eight are a descriptor block the manufacturer designs for its own use. Position nine is a check digit, computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The final six are the serial.

Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the middle block, and this is the point at which being honest is more useful than printing another table. Not one that is hard to find. Not one filed under an abbreviation. Zero. A world manufacturer identifier is applied for and held by a corporate entity, not by a marketing brand, and a group is free to file all of its codes under one corporate name and run any number of badges underneath it. Buick is a badge on that kind of arrangement, so the register has nothing to return when the badge is what you ask about.

This is not unusual within the data set behind these pages. Counting across all 56 make entries we have read, 12 of them hold no code under their own name and depend on a parent group&rsquo;s registrations instead. That is roughly one make in five. Read the first two rows as a pair. The lookup asks about a name and finds nothing. The decode asks about a code and finds a registrant.

Read the third row against the first and the entry becomes genuinely odd. The register holds no code under this name, and yet the decoder holds 27 models under exactly that name. Those two facts come from different parts of the federal system: the manufacturer-code register records corporate filings, while the model roster records what the make has submitted to the decoder about its own line. There is no requirement that the two agree, and on this make they do not even nearly.

The fourth row is the least dramatic and the most useful for anyone trying to check this page against the source. A name query against the register returns zero unrelated companies for this make. Nothing has to be filtered out, and there is no judgement call about which results to count. We counted the same field across every make entry in the file: 43 of the 56 return zero. ## Twenty-seven models, and why none is named here

Separately from the manufacturer codes, the federal decoder holds a roster of model names for each make. For this one the roster runs to 27 entries, covering what the decoder knows across all years rather than any current line-up.

This page prints none of those names. The archived pull behind it carries the count and not the list, and we would rather say so than reconstruct a roster from somewhere else and present it as though it had come from the register. Naming models we cannot cite is exactly the failure this site tries not to commit, and a list that looks authoritative while being sourced from nowhere is worse than no list at all.

The count matters less than it might appear, because it is not what a buyer needs. Decoding an actual number returns the model for that specific vehicle, resolved by the federal system from the characters in front of it. That is the answer worth having, and it does not depend on any roster being reprinted here.

What the number does support is a comparison, and we counted before making it. Four makes in this data set have their parent recorded as General Motors. Their model rosters run to 124, 87, 37 and 27 entries, and 27 is this make&rsquo;s. It is the shortest of the four. That is a statement about how much each make has submitted to the decoder across the years it covers, and it is not a statement about production, sales or anything else the register does not hold.

## Three vehicle classes, where the parent&rsquo;s codes span five

The decoder also records which vehicle classes it holds for a make, and this is where the Buick entry differs most sharply from its siblings under the same parent.

Three classes are recorded here: Passenger Car, Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle and Incomplete Vehicle. The parent&rsquo;s 110 manufacturer codes, by contrast, are filed across five — the same three plus Truck and Bus. That difference is real but it needs reading carefully. A multipurpose passenger vehicle is also designed to carry ten or fewer, but is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation. The test turns on how a vehicle is built and what it is engineered to do, and the answer determines which safety standards apply to it. Nothing in either definition mentions price, body shape as an owner would describe it, or the word anybody would use in conversation.

Incomplete Vehicle is the one that reads strangest in a passenger-car context. In the federal scheme it describes a vehicle that requires further manufacturing operations before it becomes a completed vehicle — a chassis or a partial build passed on to a subsequent-stage manufacturer, who finishes it and certifies it. It is a category about where a vehicle sits in the certification chain, not a judgement that anything is missing from a finished car.

So a decode that returns one of these words in the vehicle type field is answering the question &ldquo;which regulatory category does this manufacturer code sit in?&rdquo; and answering it correctly. It is not answering &ldquo;what would you call this vehicle?&rdquo;, and it was never built to. The useful habit is to read the field as metadata about the code rather than as a statement about the individual car.

## Where the parent&rsquo;s codes were filed, and what that field is

Each of the 110 parent codes carries a country against it, and the split runs like this: 75 against the United States, 15 against Canada, 10 against Mexico, 2 against Australia, 2 against China, 1 against South Korea, 1 against South Africa, and 4 with no country recorded at all. Seven countries appear in the entry, and four codes have the field left empty.

That column records where the registering entity filed. It is a fact about a filing, not a fact about a production line. A code can be registered by an entity in one country and used on vehicles built somewhere else, and the register neither prevents that nor comments on it. The correct reading of the field is the modest one: it says where a filing sits, and nothing stronger than that.

An empty country field is likewise an unremarkable outcome rather than a defect. It means the field was not populated for that filing. Nothing in the federal data allows anyone to fill it in afterwards, so this page does not guess at it.

The practical upshot for a buyer is narrow and worth stating plainly: do not treat the country recorded against a manufacturer code as an assembly location, and do not treat a blank one as a warning sign. ## How this entry differs from its siblings

Three other makes in this data set share the same parent, and it is worth being precise about what they have in common and what they do not, because the differences are all in the numbers rather than in the argument.

What they share is the arrangement. None of the four holds a manufacturer code under its own name, all four depend on the same 110 parent codes, and a decode on any of them returns one of the same two registered company names. On that much, the pages agree and there is nothing to add.

Where they diverge is in what the decoder holds under each name. ## What the decode does not carry

A decode does not carry condition. It resolves what the vehicle was specified as when the number was assigned. It says nothing about what has happened since — wear, damage, repairs, replacements, or anything fitted, removed or swapped after the vehicle left the factory. A number is a fixed record of an origin, not a live description of an object.

A decode does not tell you that a recall was carried out. The recall lookup and the VIN decode are separate operations against separate records, however similar they look from the outside. And a decode does not carry title status, mileage history, or the record of what has been reported against the vehicle over its life. Those live in different systems and have to be asked separately. ## Using all of this on a specific vehicle

Put together, the sensible sequence on an individual car is short and does not take long.

Start by checking that the number on the vehicle matches the number on the paperwork, in every character, on every document.The number appears on the certification label and in at least one other place on the vehicle itself; if two of them disagree, stop and find out why before anything else happens.

Then decode the number and read the result for what it is. The manufacturer prefix will resolve to one of the parent group&rsquo;s codes and return a registered company name and a federal vehicle class. Expect the company name to be a corporate entity rather than the badge. Expect the class to be a regulatory word, possibly one you would never use yourself. Neither is a fault, and neither needs explaining away.

Then check the model year character against the advert, run the recall lookup, and run the title check. Those three take a few minutes between them and they address the questions that actually decide whether a vehicle is worth pursuing.

Finally, treat everything the decode cannot reach as a documentation problem rather than a data problem. Service records, evidence that recall work was done, and an inspection by somebody competent are what fill that gap.

## If you are the one selling

The same material is useful from the other side of the transaction. A decode run on your vehicle returns a corporate registrant, and possibly a vehicle class that reads oddly against what is parked in front of it. Either can prompt a question that sounds sharper than it is meant to.

The answer is the one this page has been making throughout: the register records a registrant and a federal classification, and neither is a description of the vehicle. The codes are filed under the parent group because that is how the group organises its registrations, and the badge appearing nowhere in the register is the normal state of affairs rather than a sign that anything is amiss.
