# Ducati VIN Decoder: Two Codes, Two Countries, Two Companies

> Ducati holds 2 manufacturer codes, filed in two countries by two companies. Where to find the number on a motorcycle, and why the engine number is a different number.

## The short version

- There is no Ducati-only decoder, and nothing about the make requires one. Every vehicle certified for sale in this market carries the same seventeen-character number, and a single federal register resolves the manufacturer prefix on all of them.
- The register entry is small enough to print whole, so this page prints it. Two world manufacturer identifiers: ZDM and ML0.
- Two codes, two registered company names, two countries. ZDM is filed by DUCATI MOTOR HOLDING S.P.A. against ITALY. ML0 is filed by DUCATI MOTOR (THAILAND) CO., LTD. against THAILAND. The country field records where the registrant filed, not where a machine was assembled.

A Ducati carries the same seventeen-character number as a saloon car, a pickup or a delivery van. It is built to one federal standard, the standard does not vary with the badge or with the number of wheels, and the register that turns its first three characters into a manufacturer is the register that reads every other vehicle certified for sale here. Nothing about the marque calls for a decoder of its own.

What is worth reading is what that register actually holds for the make, and the honest finding here is how compact it is. This page works from the archived read of NHTSA&rsquo;s vPIC register. Under this make there are two codes. Two rows, eight fields between them, and everything else on this page is either a careful reading of those eight fields or a plain statement about what the number cannot do. The entry is short enough to reproduce in full, which is what the next few sections do rather than summarising it and asking you to take the summary on trust.

Because the file is thin, the useful work sits elsewhere: in stating precisely what the two rows say, refusing to embroider them, and then pointing at the records a buyer actually has to retrieve instead. There is one further wrinkle worth flagging early, and it is specific to two wheels. A motorcycle carries its identifying number differently from a car, and it carries a second number as well — one that is not part of its identity and is not what a decoder answers for. That distinction is not one any decoder will flag for you, and it gets its own section below.

Ducati holds 2 world manufacturer identifiers in NHTSA’s register, covering 2 countries of manufacture, against 61 models the decoder holds for the make. A WMI is registered by a corporate entity rather than by a brand, so the count reflects how the group organises its registrations rather than how many vehicles it builds — which is why some familiar names return only one.

## One register reads every VIN, motorcycles included

The vehicle identification number is a federal standard, and its layout does not change with the badge or with the number of wheels. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that certifies the vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle in a descriptor scheme the manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The final six are the serial.

Motorcycles sit inside that standard rather than beside it. Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the middle block, and this is the point at which a page has to be honest about a gap rather than paper over it. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. What the register records is narrower: which entity holds a prefix, what vehicle class the prefix is filed under, which country that entity filed in, and the date the code was entered. It does not record that a given character in position six means one capacity on one machine and something else on another.

So this page prints no position-by-position table for the make, and no plant-code list, because we hold neither from a source we would stand behind. Decoding a real number returns the descriptor fields as the federal system resolves them for that specific machine, which is a different and far more dependable thing than a printed key. ## The whole entry: two codes, printed in full

A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose for itself. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under this make there are two of them, and here they are in their entirety.

**ZDM.** Registered to DUCATI MOTOR HOLDING S.P.A. Filed under the vehicle type Motorcycle. Country recorded as ITALY. Entered in the register on 3 June 2015.

**ML0.** Registered to DUCATI MOTOR (THAILAND) CO., LTD. Filed under the vehicle type Motorcycle. Country recorded as THAILAND. Entered in the register on 8 June 2015.

That is the complete entry. Not a selection, not the interesting rows, not the ones that fit a chart — the whole of what the federal register holds under this make name. Two is at the low end of what this archive holds. Across the forty-six makes we have read, the count under a make name runs from none at all to sixty, three makes hold exactly two, and ten hold none in their own right.

On the register as it stands, the numbers issued under this make&rsquo;s own filings open with ZDM or with ML0, and a decode of one of them will name one of the two companies above. If a number you are checking opens with something else, that is worth pausing on before anything else in the transaction. It does not automatically mean the machine is misdescribed — it can equally mean the number was transcribed wrongly, or that the machine was never certified for this market and therefore was never issued a number under either code. Either way it is a question for the seller rather than something to work around.

## Two registrants, and what a registrant field actually is

The two codes are filed by two differently named companies, and the registrant field wants reading narrowly, because the name it prints suggests more than the field carries. A lookup that returns DUCATI MOTOR (THAILAND) CO., LTD. against a machine wearing the ordinary badge has not gone wrong, and it is not evidence that the machine has been described carelessly.

The registrant field answers one narrow question: which legal entity filed for the right to issue numbers under that prefix. It is not telling you who designed the machine, who imported it, who warrants it, whose name is over the dealership door, or how the two named companies relate to one another. The register carries a name, a vehicle type, a country and a date against each code, and it carries nothing that would let anybody state a relationship between the two entities. This page therefore does not state one. Where the register is silent, the correct move is to report the silence rather than to fill it in from memory, and that principle is worth more to a reader than a confident paragraph would be.

What a buyer can take from it is practical and limited. Seeing a company name that is not identical to the badge is not, in itself, evidence of anything wrong. The checks that would genuinely expose a misrepresented machine are different checks: whether the number on the frame matches the number on the paperwork, whether the model and model year the decode returns match the advertisement, and what the title record says. A registrant name is a fact about a filing cabinet. ## Two countries, and what the country field does not mean

The register records ITALY against ZDM and THAILAND against ML0. Two codes, two countries, and on this make the split is perfectly clean: one code each, one registrant each.

This is where a caution has to be attached firmly, because the field is named in a way that invites over-reading. The country recorded against a world manufacturer identifier describes where the registering entity filed. It is a fact about a company&rsquo;s paperwork. It is not a manufacturing address, it is not a statement about which building a machine was assembled in, and the register holds nothing that would let anyone convert it into one.

The distinction matters more on an entry like this one than on a make whose codes all sit in a single country, because here the two rows differ on the field. A decode returning the entity filed against Thailand and a decode returning the entity filed against Italy are both correct decodes of properly assigned numbers. Reading either as a factory location goes beyond what the data supports, and a conclusion reached that way is not one the record ever stated.

Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, which is the field that would answer the assembly question properly. The register does not publish the key that turns that character into a plant name, so this page prints no plant-code table for the make. A decode of a real number returns what the federal system resolves for that specific machine; a table assembled from elsewhere is a different kind of claim and is not one this page makes.

## Z, M and a zero: reading the two codes character by character

Both codes repay a moment&rsquo;s attention, because between them they illustrate two things that regularly cost people time.

The first is the leading character. ZDM opens with Z; ML0 opens with M. Within this entry the first character tracks the country the registering entity is filed in, exactly as the two rows sit. Two machines wearing the same badge can therefore open with entirely different characters, and that difference reflects which entity issued the number rather than any distinction of trim, market or quality. Neither code is the proper one and neither is the lesser one. The register records two prefixes, two registrants and two countries of filing, and no ranking between them.

The second is the third character of ML0, which is the digit zero. It is not the letter O, and it cannot be, because a VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q. Those three were excluded from the standard precisely because they are too easily confused with the digits 1, 0 and 0 again. This is the cheapest error-catcher available to anyone checking a number: if you think you can see an O in a VIN, you are looking at a zero. Reading it as a letter breaks the lookup, and it breaks it in a way that produces a blank result rather than an obviously wrong one, so the failure presents as a broken tool when what has actually failed is the transcription.

Run the check digit before anything else for the same reason. Position nine is computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails the sum before it has cost anybody a journey. ## Both codes were registered within five days of each other

The register carries a creation date against each code. ZDM was entered on 3 June 2015. ML0 was entered on 8 June 2015. Five days separate them, and there is nothing else in the entry — no third code, no later addition, no gap of years to read a story into.

What that supports is narrow, and it is worth being exact about the limits. The dates rank the two filings and tell you they were entered in the same week. They do not tell you when any machine was built, when one was first sold, when one was first titled, or how many numbers have been issued under either code. The register does not record production volume against a prefix, and nothing in this entry would let anyone infer it.

Two consequences follow for a buyer. First, a June 2015 registration date says nothing whatever about the age of a machine in front of you. Nothing in the entry connects a registration date to any production activity, so the date tells you when the filing was made and nothing about when numbers were issued under it. Second, if you want the model year, it is at position ten of the individual number and nowhere else. The dates also explain something about how this archive reads. Every figure on this page comes from one read of a public register, taken on a stated day. If NHTSA amends the entry, this page will be behind until it is read again. That is a limitation worth printing rather than hiding, and it is the reason the read date appears near the top.

## One vehicle type, and what the type field is for

Both codes are filed under the same vehicle type: Motorcycle. There is no second class in the entry, no trailer code, no all-terrain classification, nothing filed under a passenger-vehicle heading. Of the forty-six makes in this archive, five file every code they hold under Motorcycle alone, and this is one of them.

That uniformity is convenient but it carries less information than it appears to. The vehicle type is a federal classification applied to the code, not a description of any particular machine. It tells you the category under which numbers issued from that prefix are certified. It does not tell you the capacity, the configuration, the body style, whether a machine is built for road or for anything else, or which of the sixty-one models the decoder holds a given number resolves to.

The practical reading is straightforward. The type field confirms the broad category and then stops, and confirming that a specific machine matches its advertised description remains a job for a decode of that machine&rsquo;s own number, read against the listing, and then for your own eyes on the metal. ## A register entry with nothing else attached to it

The register&rsquo;s name endpoint matches company names as text rather than resolving brands, which means that asking it for a common word can drag in unrelated builders whose registered names happen to contain the same string. Where that happens, a raw result can look far larger than the make&rsquo;s actual entry, and the extra rows have to be filtered out by hand before the count means anything.

Querying the register for this make returns zero unrelated matches. Nothing else on the register is filed under a name that catches the same string, so the two rows above are the entry and there is nothing to subtract. That is the ordinary case rather than a special one: thirty-six of the forty-six makes in this archive return zero unrelated matches.

The make also registers under its own name rather than sitting beneath a parent group in the register, so a search on the badge returns the codes directly. That is not true everywhere — ten of the forty-six makes we have read hold no code at all under their own name, and their numbers are issued under a parent&rsquo;s filing, which is why a lookup on those badges returns almost nothing. Here the badge and the register entry line up, and a reader who runs the same query themselves will see the same two rows.

## Sixty-one models, and why this page names none of them

The federal register holds sixty-one models for the make. That is the decoder&rsquo;s vocabulary here — the set of names a decode can return when it resolves a specific number.

The archived pull behind this page carries that count and not the roster, so no model is named on this page. That is a deliberate rule rather than an oversight. Every make page on this site works from one archived read of the register, and we publish what the read contains. Reciting a list of model names from memory would look identical, to a reader, to reporting the data, and would carry none of the same guarantee. Where the roster is in the archive, we print it. Here we hold the count, so the count is what you get.

The count is not the useful part in any case. What a buyer needs is the model returned for one specific machine, and that comes from decoding that machine&rsquo;s number rather than from any list. A roster would tell you what the register knows about the make in general; the decode tells you what it holds about the machine you are being asked to pay for.

And a model name is not a specification. The register knows the model line as filed. It does not know which options were fitted, what has been changed since, or what condition any of it is in now. ## Where the number is on a motorcycle

Whatever the listing says, the number to work from is the one on the machine. On two wheels that means the frame, and the usual stamping is on the steering head — the section of frame the forks pass through, at the front. The practical difference from a car is that there is no windscreen plate and no door aperture to give you a convenient second reading. A car offers two easy places to check the same number against each other; a bike does not lay its identity out for you in the same way. Read the stamping directly rather than copying the number from the title or the advertisement, and photograph it rather than transcribing it by hand. Stamped characters are harder to read than printed ones, and this is exactly where the zero in ML0 turns into a letter O in somebody&rsquo;s notes. Compare what you photographed, character by character, against the paperwork and against whatever you decoded.

A stamping that looks ground, filled, restruck or freshly painted at the neck alone is a finding in its own right, and it outweighs anything a lookup returns. So do two readings that disagree. ## The frame number and the engine number are two different numbers

This is the point where two wheels genuinely diverge from four, and no decoder will flag it for you.

The frame carries the machine&rsquo;s legal identity: the seventeen characters, the number on the title, the number every federal lookup is keyed to. The engine carries a separate identifier of its own, cast or stamped into the cases. They are not the same number, they were never meant to be the same number, and they do not verify each other. An engine can be removed, rebuilt or replaced without the machine&rsquo;s legal identity changing at all, because that identity belongs to the frame and never moved.

The federal decode answers for the frame number and nothing else. Give it the seventeen characters and it returns what the manufacturer certified against that frame identity. It does not know which engine is currently bolted into the frame, whether that engine is the one the machine was built with, or whether any documented relationship between the two exists. When a decode names a model, it is repeating a filing about an identity. It is not inspecting the machine.

No public federal tool accepts an engine number as an input either, because nothing is filed against one. Attempts to look a machine up by its engine number return nothing, and that blank is the system behaving correctly rather than a database gap. The number to type into any lookup is always the frame number.

So write both down and treat them as separate facts. Read the frame number off the steering head and check it against the title, character by character. Read the engine number separately and note it. Then ask the seller to account for any difference between the engine that is fitted and the machine as described. A rebuild or a replacement that comes with paperwork is straightforward to explain; an engine that nobody can account for, on a machine priced as untouched, is a reason to slow down rather than to press on.

## What the decode will not tell a Ducati buyer

This is the section that does the most work, because it is where the distance between what people expect from a VIN and what a VIN carries is widest.

The number is a build identity. It exists so a regulator can tie a recall campaign to a batch of machines, an insurer can tie a policy to an object, and a state can tie a title to that same object. It was never designed to describe a machine&rsquo;s condition today, and it has no field for any of the following.

**Service history.** Nothing about oil changes, valve clearances, chain and sprocket work, fluid changes or the last time anything was inspected reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. Where a machine has been maintained by independent workshops or in a garage at home, there may be no central record anywhere — only a folder of receipts, which is worth asking for and worth reading properly when it appears.

**Whether a recall was actually carried out.** The federal recall lookup will tell you whether a campaign is recorded as open or remedied against a specific number, which is free and genuinely useful. What no decode does is prove that a previous owner ever presented the machine. A campaign showing as remedied means a remedy was recorded; one showing as open means the work is outstanding as far as the system knows. **What is fitted now.** A decode reports the machine as certified, not as it stands. Exhausts, screens, bars, seats, luggage, suspension internals, electronics and bodywork can all be changed after a machine leaves the line, and none of it reaches any historical record. Original specification and current specification are two separate claims, and only the first has any chance of living in a file. **Condition, mileage accuracy and damage that never reached a record.** A decode reads a build identity. Damage enters the file only where an insurer or a state filed something, and a repair paid for privately leaves no trace at all. ## The records that sit around the number

The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-machine money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it.

Three retrievals do most of the work, and they go in this order. The federal recall lookup is free, per-vehicle and authoritative on open campaigns. The theft check is also free and answers a question that ends a purchase outright. And the title history — the brands, the state-by-state chain, the readings that entered the record at each titling — is the one that repays paying for. Know the boundaries of the free tools before leaning on them. Where a machine carries a brand on its title, the brand is the purchase. ## A sequence for a used Ducati, and the same list from the seller&rsquo;s side

Put together, the order looks like this, and none of the first four steps requires leaving home.

Get the full seventeen characters from the seller and validate the check digit. Watch the zero in ML0 as you type it. A number that fails the arithmetic is a transcription error until proved otherwise, and finding that out early costs nothing.

Decode it. Confirm that the model and model year returned agree with the advertisement, because a disagreement here ends the conversation before anyone has ridden anywhere. Note which of the two codes issued the number, and read the company name for what it is: the registered entity, which on one of the two codes is a name containing the word Thailand, and which is not a claim about the badge or about where the machine was put together.

Run the free lookups. Recalls and the theft flag are per-vehicle, free and quick, and either can settle the matter from the kitchen table.

Buy the title history once and read the chain rather than the headline. Which states, in what order, with what readings and what brands. A short chain with long ownerships reads well. A machine that has crossed several states quickly is asking a question the seller should be able to answer without hesitating.

Then do the part no record covers. Read the frame number off the steering head with your own eyes and compare it character by character with the number you decoded and the number on the title. Note the engine number separately. Ask for the service folder and read it. Run in the other direction, the same facts are worth money to a seller and cost nothing to use.

Publish the number. A seller who prints the seventeen characters in the listing is telling every serious buyer that the record will survive being checked. Photograph the steering-head stamping clearly enough to read, and photograph the engine number too. Having both ready answers the question before it is asked, and it sets the tone for everything after it.

State the decoded model and model year rather than the description on the tank, and pull the title history yourself before a buyer does. Leading with a clean chain is stronger than defending one under questioning.

And if your machine opens with ML0, expect the company-name question and answer it the way this page does. The register lists a registered entity and a country of filing; it does not describe where anything was built, and it is not a comment on the machine. A seller who can explain their own paperwork calmly is a seller who looks like they have read it — which is exactly the impression worth having when the negotiation starts.

## Common questions

### Is there an official Ducati VIN decoder?

Not a separate one, and none is needed. Machines certified for this market carry the same seventeen-character number as everything else, and the federal register resolves the manufacturer prefix for every make on the same terms. A general decoder handles the marque.

### How many manufacturer codes does Ducati have?

Two: ZDM and ML0. Both are filed under the vehicle type Motorcycle, under two different company names, against two different countries of registration.

### What do ZDM and ML0 stand for?

They are assigned prefixes rather than abbreviations, so they do not stand for anything that can be spelled out. ZDM is registered to DUCATI MOTOR HOLDING S.P.A. with ITALY in the country field. ML0 is registered to DUCATI MOTOR (THAILAND) CO., LTD. with THAILAND in the country field. That is the whole of what the register records against either.

### Is the last character of ML0 a letter O or a zero?

A zero. The letters I, O and Q never appear anywhere in a VIN, because they were excluded from the standard to prevent confusion with the digits 1 and 0. If a lookup returns nothing for a number you believe starts with ML followed by a letter, that is the transcription to fix first.

### Does the country in the decode tell me where my bike was built?

No. The country recorded against a code describes where the registering entity filed, not where any machine was assembled. Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, but the register does not publish the key that turns it into a plant name, so this page prints no plant table.

### Why does my decode name a company with Thailand in it?
