Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the middle block, and this is the point at which the page has to be honest about a gap rather than paper over it. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. This is the section that does the most work on any make page, and it does more than usual here, because when the register entry is one row almost everything a buyer wants has to come from somewhere else.

**What has been changed.** A historical decode describes a build, at best. It does not show an exhaust swapped, a suspension component replaced, a control unit reflashed, bodywork changed or a part fitted from another machine. ## Reading the number off the machine

Whatever the listing says, the number to work from is the one on the machine. Read it yourself rather than copying it from an advert, and read it from more than one place if the machine offers more than one.

Location is one of the practical differences between a motorcycle and a car. There is no windscreen plate and no door aperture to open, so the number is stamped into the frame, usually on or near the steering head, and there is generally a label carrying it as well. Two readings that disagree is a finding in itself rather than a transcription problem to be shrugged off. Put together, the order looks like this, and none of the first four steps requires leaving home.

Buy the title history once and read the chain rather than the headline: which states, in what order, with what readings and what brands. A short chain with long ownerships reads well. A machine that has crossed several states quickly is asking a question the seller should be able to answer without hesitating.

Then do the part no record covers. Read the number off the frame with your own eyes and compare it character by character with the number you decoded and the number on the paperwork. State the decoded model and model year rather than the description on the badge, and pull the title history yourself before a buyer does. Leading with a clean chain is stronger than defending one under questioning.

And expect the company-name question, because a decode here returns a long registrant string with a former name inside the brackets.
