# Indian Motorcycle VIN Decoder: Three Codes, Two Companies

## The short version

- There is no Indian-only decoder, and none is needed. Every machine certified for this market carries the same seventeen-character number, and one federal register resolves the manufacturer prefix on all of them.
- The whole entry is three world manufacturer identifiers — 5YA, 56K and 5CD. Three rows is short enough to print rather than summarise, and this page prints it.
- Those three codes are split between two filed companies: INDIAN MOTORCYCLE COMPANY holds two of them and INDIAN MOTORCYCLE LLC holds one. A decode returns the registrant, so the name that comes back may not be the name on the tank.

## One register reads every VIN, motorcycles included

The vehicle identification number is a federal standard, and its layout does not change with the badge or with the number of wheels. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that issues numbers. Positions four to eight are a descriptor block the manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit, computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The last six are the serial.

Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the middle of the number, and this is where saying so plainly is more use than another table. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. The register records who holds a prefix, what vehicle type the prefix is filed under, which country the entity filed in, and the date the code was opened. It does not record what a particular character in position six means on one frame as against another.

## Three codes, and the entry printed rather than summarised

A VIN opens with characters the manufacturer does not choose for itself. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under this make there are three of them: 5YA, 56K and 5CD.

That is not an excerpt. It is the entry. Every code the federal register holds under this name is in that list, and there is no continuation, no second page, and nothing left out for reasons of space. Anyone who wants to check this page against the source can do it by reading three rows, which is a standard we would rather every page on this site could be held to.

All three begin with the same character. That is a fact about where the identifier was granted. It is not a fact about which building any individual machine came out of, and the federal data does not answer that question.

Three codes is a short entry by the standards of this series, but shortness on its own carries no meaning. A manufacturer code is a registration, and there is no rule that the number of registrations tracks the size of a range, the length of a production run, or anything a buyer would notice. ## Two filed companies, and a split across the three codes

The codes are split between more than one filed company. A decode returns the registrant, so the name that comes back may not be the one on the tank. Read from NHTSA’s vPIC register and archived in data/vin-makes.json.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE COMPANY holds two of the three codes, 5YA and 5CD. INDIAN MOTORCYCLE LLC holds the third, 56K. Both names contain the make name, which is a mercy — on plenty of other entries the registered name shares no words at all with the badge — but they are still two different filed entities, and a decode will return whichever one holds the prefix in front of it.

That split is not unusual. Counting across all 56 make entries we have read for this site, 30 of them carry more than one distinct registrant name against their own codes — more entries do this than do not — so a make whose codes divide between two filed companies is the commoner pattern rather than an oddity. What makes it worth a section here is that it is invisible until you decode. Two machines that look identical in an advert can return two different company names, purely because their numbers open with codes held by different filers.

We are not going to narrate anything past those two names, because the register does not carry it. A filing supplies a name, a country and a date. It does not record how entities relate to one another, who owns what, which of them does what, or why a second name was registered at all, and this page does not supply that kind of detail from memory. What can be said with confidence is what is written down: two names, three codes, and a two-to-one split between them.

## What the registrant field is, and what it is not

A decode reproduces the registered name character for character, because reporting the registrant is precisely what that field is for. It answers one question: which filed entity is entitled to issue this number? It is not answering who designed the machine, who sold it, who warrants it, or whose name is above the dealership door.

Read it as metadata about the code rather than as a statement about the machine in front of you. The distinction sounds pedantic until a decode comes back naming a limited liability company where you expected a badge, at which point it is the entire explanation. Nothing has gone wrong. The lookup has answered the question it was built to answer, and that question was narrower than the one being asked of it.

It also follows that the registrant name is not a verification tool. Two machines with the same registrant are not thereby the same specification, and two machines with different registrants are not thereby different in any way an owner would notice. The name tells you which filing the prefix belongs to. Everything a buyer actually wants to know — what it is, what has happened to it, whether it is worth the money — sits outside that field entirely.

## Every code filed as one vehicle type

Each world manufacturer identifier is filed under a vehicle type, and on this entry all three carry the same one: Motorcycle. There is no second category in the entry and no mixed filing to reconcile.

That word is a federal classification rather than a description somebody wrote. The categories exist because the rules that apply to a vehicle depend on which category it falls into, and the register writes down which category the filing sits in. Nothing in it describes displacement, riding position, intended use, or what anyone would call the machine in conversation.

Having a single type across the whole entry does simplify one thing. On makes whose codes divide across several categories, the type field is a live source of surprise: a decode returns a regulatory word an owner would never use, and it reads as an error when it is nothing of the kind. That cannot happen here. Whichever of the three codes a number opens with, the type field returns the same word, and it is the word most people would have guessed.

For context on how ordinary that is, of the 44 entries we have read that hold codes of their own, we counted 12 that are filed under a single vehicle type throughout. So a uniform entry is a minority outcome across the register, but not a rare one, and it carries no implication beyond itself.

## One country recorded, and what that field records

All three codes have the United States recorded against them.

That records where the registering entity filed. It is a fact about a filing, not a fact about a production line. A code can be registered by an entity in one country and used on machines built somewhere else entirely, and the register neither prevents that nor comments on it. Reading the field as an assembly location is the single most common way to get more out of a decode than the decode actually said.

The useful version of the question — where was this specific machine built — is answered by the certification label on the machine and by its documentation, not by a column in a manufacturer register. If that matters to you, look at the machine and the paperwork. The register was never going to settle it.

What a uniform country column does give you is a small negative check. If a decode on a machine sold as one of these returns a country you did not expect, that is worth a second look at the number itself rather than at the country field, because all three codes in this entry are filed the same way.

## Two filing dates across three codes

Each code carries the date its registration was recorded. Two of the three, 5YA and 56K, carry 14 July 2015. The third, 5CD, carries 21 September 2016.

These are registration dates. They are not build dates, not model years, and not the date any machine went on sale. A code has to exist before numbers can be issued under it, so a filing date sets an outer boundary and nothing finer. It does not tell you that machines began appearing that month, and it says nothing whatever about volumes.

The one legitimate reading is as an ordering. Two of the codes were filed on the same day and the third more than a year later, which tells you which registration in the entry is the most recent. That is a fact about the sequence of filings. It is not a fact about the sequence of machines, and the two should not be run together — a code filed later can appear on a number issued at any point after that filing, and a code filed earlier does not stop being used when a newer one arrives.

## The one extra row a name query returns

Searching the register by name rather than by code returns one row here that is not the manufacturer at all. It is worth knowing about, because a name query is how most people approach a register and this row will come back with the rest.

The row is filed under the identifier 1Z9207, against the registered name C&S CYCLE & LEATHER INC DBA INDIAN MOTORCYCLE BRIT — the stored name ends there, and this page does not guess at what the rest of it said. It is recorded as a motorcycle filing, with the United States against it, registered on 21 September 2016. It is returned by a name query only because the words appear inside a longer company name.

Two things give it away as a different kind of entry. The first is the name itself, which describes a business rather than the manufacturer. The second is the identifier: six characters rather than three. That is the register&rsquo;s form for manufacturers below the small-volume threshold, whose identifier continues into positions twelve to fourteen of the number instead of stopping at position three. Codes of that shape are not issued to volume manufacturers, so the length alone is a reliable sort.

Filtering it out matters for one reason only: counting. Include it and the make appears to hold four codes; exclude it and the entry is three, which is the correct figure. Across the 56 entries we have read, we counted 43 that return no unrelated rows at all on a name query. This one returns exactly one, and it is straightforward to spot.

This make also registers under its own name, with no parent group behind it. Some makes covered on this site hold nothing at all under the badge — their codes are filed under a parent, and querying the badge alone returns an empty result that reads as a broken lookup. That situation does not arise here.

## Where the number is on a motorcycle

Whatever a listing says, the number to work from is the one on the machine. On two wheels that means the frame, and the usual stamping is on the steering head, the section of frame the forks pass through at the front. That is where the everyday name &ldquo;frame number&rdquo; comes from: the same seventeen characters under a different label. The practical difference from a car is that there is no windscreen plate and no door aperture giving you a convenient second reading of the same number. A car lays its identity out in two easy places that can be checked against each other; a bike generally does not. Read the stamping directly rather than copying the number off the title or the advert, and photograph it rather than transcribing it by hand. Stamped characters are harder to read than printed ones, and all three prefixes in this entry mix digits with letters — 5YA, 56K and 5CD — so a character misread in either direction produces a prefix that is not in the entry at all. A decode run on a mistyped prefix returns either nothing or a different manufacturer, neither of which is the machine&rsquo;s fault. Compare what you photographed, character by character, against the paperwork and against whatever you decoded.

## The frame number and the engine number are two different numbers

This is where two wheels genuinely diverge from four, and no decoder will flag it for you.

The frame carries the machine&rsquo;s legal identity: the seventeen characters, the number on the title, the number every federal lookup is keyed to. The engine carries a separate identifier of its own, cast or stamped into the cases. They are not the same number, they were never meant to be the same number, and they do not verify each other. An engine can be removed, rebuilt or replaced without the machine&rsquo;s legal identity changing at all, because that identity belongs to the frame and never moved.

The federal decode answers for the frame number and nothing else. Give it the seventeen characters and it returns what was certified against that frame identity. It does not know which engine is bolted into the frame today, whether that engine is the one the machine was built with, or whether any documented relationship between the two exists. When a decode names a model, it is repeating a filing about an identity. It is not inspecting the machine.

No public federal tool accepts an engine number as an input either, because nothing is filed against one. A lookup attempted on an engine number returns nothing, and that blank is the system behaving correctly rather than a database gap. The number to type into any lookup is always the frame number.

So write both down and treat them as separate facts. Read the frame number off the steering head and check it against the title, character by character. Read the engine number separately and note it. Then ask the seller to account for any difference between the engine that is fitted and the machine as described. A rebuild or a replacement that comes with paperwork is easy to explain; an engine nobody can account for, on a machine priced as untouched, is a reason to slow down.

## Seventy-seven models in the decoder, and no list on this page

Separately from the manufacturer codes, the federal decoder holds a roster of model names for each make. For this one the roster runs to seventy-seven entries, covering what the decoder knows across all years rather than any current line-up.

This page prints none of those names. The archived pull behind it carries the count and not the list, and we would rather say so than reconstruct a roster from somewhere else and present it as though it came from the register. Naming models we cannot cite is exactly the failure this site tries not to commit, and a list that looks authoritative while being sourced from nowhere is worse than no list at all.

It matters less than it might appear, because the count is not what a buyer needs. Decoding an actual number returns the model for that specific machine, resolved by the federal system from the characters in front of it. That is the answer worth having, and it does not depend on any roster being reprinted here.

The gap between three codes and seventy-seven model names is itself the point. A manufacturer code is a registration; a model name is a catalogue entry. There is no requirement that the two scale together, and on this make they very obviously do not. Anyone hoping to identify a model from the first three characters is asking three characters to distinguish between seventy-seven things, which they cannot do and were never built to do.

## What the prefix can and cannot narrow down

Given all of the above, it is worth being precise about what the opening characters actually buy you on one of these machines.

They tell you which of two filed companies issued the number, that the filing sits under the motorcycle vehicle type, that the registrant filed in the United States, and that the code was opened on one of two dates. That is four facts, and they are genuinely useful for one purpose: confirming that a number belongs to the entry it is claimed to belong to.

They do not tell you the model, the year, the displacement, the specification, the colour, the plant, or anything else a buyer would put in a shortlist. The model year lives at position ten. The model lives in the descriptor block, resolved by the federal system rather than by any printed key. And everything about the machine&rsquo;s life sits outside the number altogether.

The honest summary is that the prefix is an identity check rather than a description. Used as an identity check it is reliable and quick. Used as a description it will mislead you, not because the data is wrong but because you will be reading answers to questions nobody asked it.

## What the decode does not carry

Everything above concerns what the register holds. This section concerns what it does not, and for anyone about to hand over money it is the more important half.

A decode does not carry service history. It will not tell you when the machine was last looked at, what was done, whether it was done by someone competent, or whether anything was skipped.On a motorcycle this gap is larger than it is on a car, because more of what determines condition is maintenance rather than mileage.

A decode does not carry condition. It resolves what the machine was specified as when the number was assigned. It says nothing about what has happened since — wear, damage, crash repairs, corrosion, replacements, or anything fitted, removed or swapped afterwards. A number is a fixed record of an origin, not a live description of an object, and on a machine that is straightforward to modify that distinction does real work.

A decode does not tell you that a recall was carried out. It is worth separating these two, because the recall lookup and the VIN decode feel like the same operation. They are not. And a decode does not carry title status, mileage history, or the record of what has been reported against the machine over its life. Those live in different systems and have to be asked separately. ## A sequence for a used one, and the same list from the seller&rsquo;s side

Put together, the sensible order of operations on an individual machine is short.

Start at the steering head. Read the frame number off the machine, photograph it, and compare it character by character with the title and with the advert.Note the engine number separately while you are there.

Then decode the frame number and read the result for what it is. The prefix will resolve to one of the three codes above and return a registered company name, a vehicle type of Motorcycle, and the United States. Expect the company name to be a filed entity rather than the badge, and expect one of two possible names rather than a single one. Neither is a fault.

Then check the model year character against the advert, run the recall lookup, and run the title check. Those three take a few minutes between them and they address the questions that actually decide whether a machine is worth pursuing. Everything the decode cannot reach — service records, evidence that recall work was done, an inspection by somebody who knows the marque — is a documentation problem rather than a data problem, and no decoder fills it.

From the other side of the transaction, the same material is useful. A buyer who runs a decode and gets back a company name they did not expect, or who notices that a friend&rsquo;s machine returned a different name, may arrive with a question that sounds like an accusation. The answer is the one this page has been making throughout: the register records a filed registrant and a federal classification, and neither describes the machine.
