# KTM VIN Decoder: Three Codes, and That Is the Whole Entry

## The short version

- There is no KTM-only decoder, and there is no need for one. Every vehicle certified for sale in this market carries the same seventeen-character number, and one federal register resolves the manufacturer prefix on all of them.

Search for a KTM VIN decoder and you will be handed a screenful of input boxes, most of them arranged to imply that this marque needs a reader built specially for it. It does not. The number stamped into the frame is built to the same federal standard as the number on a saloon car, a pickup or a delivery van, and the register that turns the first three characters into a manufacturer is the same register for every one of them.

What is worth reading is what that register actually holds for the make, and here the honest finding is how little that is. This page works from the archived read of the federal register as it stood on 5 September 2026. Under this make there are three codes. Three. That is small enough that the entire entry fits in a paragraph, which is unusual enough on this site that it is worth doing rather than summarising, and unusual enough that it changes what the rest of the page should be about.

Because the file is thin, the useful work is in stating precisely what those three rows say, refusing to embroider them, and then pointing at the places a buyer actually has to go instead. A page that pads a three-row entry into an authoritative-sounding brochure is doing the reader active harm. The register is a filing cabinet, not a manufacturer briefing, and the gap between the two is where most of the bad information about VINs comes from.

KTM holds 3 world manufacturer identifiers in NHTSA’s register, covering 2 countries of manufacture, against 97 models the decoder holds for the make. A WMI is registered by a corporate entity rather than by a brand, so the count reflects how the group organises its registrations rather than how many vehicles it builds — which is why some familiar names return only one.

## One register reads every VIN, motorcycles included

The vehicle identification number is a federal standard and its layout does not change by badge or by body. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that builds the vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle in a descriptor scheme the manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The final six are the serial.

Motorcycles sit inside that standard rather than beside it. A machine certified for road use in this market carries seventeen characters laid out the same way, and a general decoder reads it as readily as it reads a hatchback. That is the whole reason the phrase &ldquo;KTM VIN decoder&rdquo; describes a search habit rather than a distinct piece of software. Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the middle block, and this is where the page has to be honest about a gap rather than paper over it. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. What the register records is narrower: who holds a prefix, what vehicle class the prefix is filed under, which country the registering entity filed in, and when the code was entered. It does not record that a particular character in position six means one capacity on one machine and something else on another.

So this page prints no position-by-position table for the make, and no plant-code list, because we have neither from a source we would stand behind. Tables of that kind are published in several places. None of them is the register, and we do not hold one from a source we would defend. Decoding a real number returns the descriptor fields as the federal system resolves them for that specific machine, which is a different and far more dependable thing than a printed key somebody assembled from a forum thread.

## The whole entry: three codes, two company names

A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose for itself. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under this make there are three of them, and here they are in their entirety.

**VBK.** Registered to KTM AG. Filed under the vehicle type Motorcycle. Country recorded as AUSTRIA. Entered in the register on 12 June 2015.

**3CG.** Registered to KTMMEX SA. DE CV. Filed under the vehicle type Motorcycle. Country recorded as UNITED STATES (USA). Entered in the register on 15 June 2015.

**L4V.** Registered to KTMMEX SA. DE CV. Filed under the vehicle type Motorcycle. No country recorded at all. Entered in the register on 15 June 2015.

That is not a summary of the entry. That is the entry. Three rows, two registrant names, one vehicle type and one week in 2015 covering every date in the file. There is nothing further in the federal register under this make&rsquo;s codes to withhold or to expand upon, which is why the sections below spend their time on what each of those fields does and does not mean rather than on producing more of them.

The two registrant names are worth reproducing exactly as the register spells them, punctuation and all, because a decode returns the filed string rather than a tidied version of it. KTM AG is one. KTMMEX SA. DE CV. is the other, full stops where the register puts them. If a lookup returns you something that looks like a typing error, the register very often agrees with the lookup: these fields are transcriptions of filings, not curated brand names.

One warning attaches to registrant names generally, and it is worth stating before anybody starts reading meaning into the letters in the second one. A registered company name is a string in a filing. It is not a geography field, it is not an ownership statement, and this page does not decode it. The register supplies a separate country field for the country question, and that field is discussed below on its own terms. Whatever a name appears to hint at, the register does not confirm it, so we do not repeat it.

## All three are filed as Motorcycle

The register files every code under a vehicle type, and on this make the answer is uniform. All three codes carry Motorcycle and nothing else. There is no code here filed as a Passenger Car, none as a Truck, none as an Off-Road Vehicle and none as a Low Speed Vehicle, all of which are federal classes that do appear against other makes in the same archive.

A short entry, and the whole of it. Three codes, every one filed as a motorcycle, and the country against each is where the filing sits rather than where the bike was built. Read from NHTSA’s vPIC register and archived in data/vin-makes.json.

That uniformity is unusual enough to be worth quantifying, so we counted rather than asserting. Across the thirty-six makes archived in this pull, three have every one of their own codes filed as Motorcycle and nothing else: Kawasaki with seven, Harley-Davidson with four, and this make with three. Five further makes hold at least one motorcycle code alongside codes of other types. Every other make in the archive holds no motorcycle code of its own. Read the class field for what it is. Motorcycle is a federal vehicle category with consequences for which safety standards apply to a machine and how it is certified. It is not a description a dealer would use, it does not distinguish one kind of riding from another, and it carries no information about capacity, configuration or intended use. A decode returning Motorcycle is telling you how the vehicle was certified. It is not telling you what sort of motorcycle you are looking at.

Nor does the class field cross-check anything for you. It records what the register expects of numbers issued under that code. Confirming that the specific machine in front of you matches its own description is still a job for a decode of that machine&rsquo;s own number, read against the advert, followed by your own eyes on the vehicle. The class field has never been able to do either of those jobs and does not start here.

## Austria, the United States, and a blank

The country field is the one most consistently misread on pages like this, so it is worth being blunt about what it does. It records the country in which the registering entity filed. It is not a manufacturing address, it is not a plant location, and it does not describe the building any individual machine was assembled in.

On this entry, the field gives three different answers to three codes. VBK carries AUSTRIA. Across every code held by every make in this archive, that value appears exactly once — we checked all of them, and this is the only entry in the file that carries it. 3CG carries UNITED STATES (USA). L4V carries nothing: the field is empty, and a decode that leans on it will return no country for a number opening with those characters.

The blank is not a fault in the lookup and it is not rare. Counting every code across the thirty-six makes in this pull, forty-four of them have no country recorded, spread over thirteen different makes. A missing country is what an incomplete filing looks like when it is read back out honestly, and the correct response to it is to report the absence rather than to fill it in from somewhere else. This page will not guess at L4V&rsquo;s country and no decoder should either.

The sharper detail is that 3CG and L4V were registered by the same company on the same day, and the register gives one of them a country and the other none. That is the field describing paperwork rather than production. Two filings that arrived together, from one registrant, resolved differently. If you have ever wondered why two decoders disagree about where a machine came from, this is the shape of the reason: they are reading a field that is incomplete in places and administrative everywhere.

## Why the first character will not give you the country here

A great deal of VIN folklore turns on the idea that the leading character tells you where a vehicle came from, and on many register entries the leading characters do line up neatly with the countries recorded beside them. On this entry they do not, and it is worth showing why rather than repeating the folklore.

The three codes begin V, 3 and L. Those are three different leading characters across three codes. The country field, meanwhile, gives one code Austria, one code the United States and one code nothing. Two of the three codes were filed by the same registrant on the same day and begin with different characters. Nothing in this entry lets you get from a leading character to a country, and this page is not going to supply a mapping the entry does not contain.

What that means in practice is narrow and useful. If you are holding a number that begins with any of these three codes, the honest reading is that the number was issued under a properly registered prefix belonging to this make, and that the register&rsquo;s own country field says what it says — including saying nothing at all for one of them. Anything more specific about the machine sits from position four onward, in fields only a decode of the actual number will return.

Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character. The register does not publish the key that turns that character into a plant name, so this page prints no plant table, and you should treat any page that prints one for this make as having got it from somewhere other than the federal data.

## Four days in June 2015

Every date in this entry falls inside a single week. VBK was entered on 12 June 2015. 3CG and L4V were both entered on 15 June 2015. Three days between the first and the last, and no code in the entry carries a date after that.

Before anyone reads a history into that, understand what the field is. A registration date records when a code was entered in the register. It is not the date any machine was built, not the date one was sold, not the date one was first titled, and not a model year. Codes can be opened ahead of production and can sit unused. A date in this entry is evidence about a filing and about nothing else, and the model year of a specific machine lives at position ten of its own number, read against our [model-year chart](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/vin-year-chart/).

There is a second reason to hold these dates loosely, and it comes out of counting the whole archive rather than this entry. Roughly two thirds of every code across all thirty-six makes in this pull carries a registration date between March and August 2015. That is the shape of a database being populated, not the shape of a sudden wave of new manufacturers. Where a 2015 date appears, the safest reading is that it tells you when the record entered this system, and the register does not distinguish that from anything earlier.

Having said all that, the compactness is still a genuine feature of this particular entry. We counted the twenty-eight makes in the archive that hold codes under their own name, and three of them have every code registered inside a single calendar month: this make, Peterbilt and Porsche. Every other own-name entry is spread over two months or more, some over more than a decade. This one is a single week, and then nothing.

The absence of anything later deserves the same caution as the presence of the dates. A register that has recorded no new code for a make since 2015 has recorded nothing about that make since 2015. It is not evidence about production, about model ranges, about market presence or about anything else, because the register does not carry those things in the first place. It is an observation about a file.

## Ninety-seven models, and why this page names none of them

Alongside the three codes, the federal decoder holds ninety-seven models for the make. That number is the decoder&rsquo;s vocabulary here — the set of model names a decode is capable of returning when it resolves a specific number.

The archived pull this page works from carries that count and not the roster of names, so no model is named anywhere on this page. That rule is not fussiness. Every make page on this site works from one archived read of the register, and we publish what the read contains. It would be indistinguishable, to a reader, from reporting the data. Where we hold the roster, we print it. Here we hold the count, so the count is what you get.

The ratio is the interesting part anyway. Ninety-seven models against three codes is a lot of vocabulary hanging off a very short register entry, and we checked how unusual that is rather than asserting it. Of the twenty-eight makes in this archive that hold codes under their own name, exactly one carries more models per code than this make does: Harley-Davidson, with three hundred and sixty-nine models against four codes. Kawasaki sits just below this make, and every other own-name entry is further down. So the pattern here — a wide model vocabulary reached through a very narrow set of prefixes — is close to the extreme end of what this archive holds.

For a buyer, none of that changes the method. The count tells you what the register knows about the make in general. A decode of one specific number tells you what it holds about the machine you are being asked to pay for, which is the only one of the two that has ever mattered at the point of purchase.

And a model name, however it arrives, is not a specification. The register knows the model line. It does not know which engine option, which suspension package, which wheel, which electronics or which fitted extras a particular machine left the line with, and on used machines those distinctions move the price more than the model name does. ## A vehicle-type list with a word the codes do not carry

One inconsistency inside the entry is worth flagging, because a reader running the same queries will meet it and deserve to know it is there rather than assume they have made a mistake.

The register answers two different questions about vehicle types, and on this make the two answers do not match. Asked what types are associated with the make name, it returns two: Motorcycle and Trailer. Asked what type each code is filed under, it returns Motorcycle three times. There is no code in this entry filed as a Trailer, yet Trailer appears in the make&rsquo;s type list.

We are not going to explain that, because the register does not explain it. The two fields are populated by different queries and they answer different questions, and the entry carries no note reconciling them. It is not unique to this make either: we checked, and several other entries in the same archive carry a type in the make-level list that none of their own codes is filed under. Reporting the discrepancy and stopping is the correct treatment of it.

What it means for a reader is a small caution with a wide application. When two fields in the same public record disagree, the answer is to say so, not to pick the one that reads better. ## No parent group, and no strangers attached

Two things about this entry make it easier to read at face value than several others on this site, and both are worth recording.

The first is that the make registers under its own name. Its codes are filed under names that begin with the same three letters as the badge, and the entry carries no parent group holding codes on its behalf. That is not true everywhere. Of the thirty-six makes in this archive, eight hold no code at all under their own name, and a search on those badges returns nothing useful because the numbers are issued under a different filing entirely. Here, badge and register entry line up, and a query on the name returns the codes you would expect it to.

The second is that the query returns no false matches. The register&rsquo;s name endpoint matches company names as text rather than resolving brands, which means asking it for a common word drags in every small builder, trailer shop and specialist converter whose registered name happens to contain that string. Readers of a raw result can easily come away believing a marque holds codes it has nothing to do with, and different sites handle that noise differently, which is one of the reasons published code counts disagree from page to page.

This make returns zero such matches. We counted across the archive: twenty-nine of the thirty-six makes return none, and this is one of them. Nothing else on the register is filed under a name that catches the same string, so the three rows above are the whole answer with nothing to subtract. A reader who runs the query themselves will see the same three rows.

## What the decode will not tell a buyer

This is the section that does the most work on a page about a three-row register entry, because the gap between what people expect a VIN to carry and what it actually carries is at its widest exactly where the register is at its thinnest.

The number is a build identity. It exists so a regulator can tie a recall campaign to a batch of vehicles, an insurer can tie a policy to an object, and a state can tie a title to that same object. It was never designed to describe the condition of a machine today, and it has no field for any of the following.

**Service history.** Nothing about oil changes, valve clearances, chain and sprocket replacement, fork oil or the last time anything was inspected reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. On a machine maintained by independent workshops or by an owner in a garage, there may be no central record anywhere at all — only a folder of receipts, which is worth asking for and worth reading properly rather than glancing at.

**Whether a recall was actually carried out.** This one is worth being careful about. The federal recall lookup will tell you whether a campaign is recorded as open against a specific number, which is genuinely useful and costs nothing. What no decode does is confirm that a previous owner ever presented the machine. A campaign showing as remedied means a remedy was recorded; a campaign showing as open means the work is outstanding as far as the system knows. **What has been changed.** A build record can describe how a machine was configured when it was made, and how much of that is recoverable varies enormously by manufacturer. What no historical decode shows is anything done afterwards: an exhaust swapped, a map altered, a suspension component replaced, a part fitted from another machine. Original specification and current specification are two separate claims, and only the first has any prospect of appearing in a record. **Condition, mileage accuracy and damage that never reached a record.** A decode reads the build. Damage enters the file only where an insurer or a state filed something, and a repair paid for privately leaves no trace at all. ## Reading the number off the machine

Whatever the listing says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle, read by you rather than copied out of an advert.

The location is one of the practical differences between a motorcycle and a car. There is no windscreen plate and no door aperture to open, so the number is stamped into the frame and there is generally a label carrying it as well. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails before it has cost anybody a journey. Two readings that disagree is a finding rather than a transcription problem to shrug off. So is a label that looks newer than the metal around it, or fixings that have clearly been off. ## The records that sit around the number

The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-vehicle money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it. On a make whose register entry is three rows long, that distinction is not academic. Almost everything a buyer wants sits outside the entry entirely.

## A sequence for a used one

Put together, the order looks like this, and none of the first four steps requires leaving home.

Get the full seventeen characters from the seller and validate the check digit. A number that fails arithmetic is a transcription error until proved otherwise, and finding that out early costs nothing.

Decode it. Confirm that the model and the model year returned agree with the advert, because a disagreement there ends the conversation before anyone has ridden anywhere. Note which of the three codes issued the number, and read the registrant name for what it is — the entity that filed, not a claim about the badge, and not a geography field.

Run the free lookups. Recalls and the theft flag are per-vehicle, free and fast, and either can settle the matter from the kitchen table.

Buy the title history once and read the chain rather than the headline. Which states, in what order, with what readings and what brands. A short chain with long ownerships reads well. A machine that has crossed several states quickly is asking a question the seller should be able to answer without hesitating.

Then do the part no record covers. Read the number off the frame with your own eyes and compare it character by character against the number you decoded and the number on the title. Ask for the service folder and read it. Anything added, removed or swapped after the machine was built is outside every historical decode, so the only reliable account of the current specification is an inspection of the machine itself.

### Can a VIN check show whether a recall was completed?

It shows whether a campaign is recorded as open or remedied against that number, which is free and worth running. It does not prove that a previous owner presented the machine, and it does not show work done outside the campaign system. Read the campaign text rather than only the flag.
