# Mack VIN Decoder: 6 Codes, and 8 Companies That Are Not Mack

## The short version

- There is no Mack-only decoder and there does not need to be one. Every vehicle certified for this market carries the same 17-character number, and one federal register resolves the manufacturer prefix on all of them.
- The register holds 6 world manufacturer identifiers under this name: 1M1, 1M2 and 1M3 recorded against the United States, and 2M1, 2M2 and 2M3 recorded against Canada.
- Query the register by name and 8 further rows come back that are not this make&rsquo;s registrations at all — SMACK TRAILERS, LLC, MACKEY TRAILERS, REMACKEL TRAILERS, INC and others. They are 6-character codes rather than 3-character ones, which is what separates them.

A number stamped on a heavy truck is read by exactly the same machinery as a number stamped on a hatchback. There is no separate reader for this marque, no proprietary key, and nothing in the federal system that treats the make as a special case. What is genuinely specific to it is the register entry — what the public file records under the name, and what it records under names that merely contain the name.

That second category is where this page spends most of its time, because it is where the make differs from almost every other one we have read. Asking the federal register for this manufacturer returns 14 rows. Only 6 of them are its registrations. The other 8 belong to other companies whose registered names happen to contain the same run of letters, and whether a published count says 6 or says 14 depends on nothing more than whether somebody filtered them out.

Everything below works from one archived read of that register, taken on 5 September 2026. Where the file records something, it is reported. Where it does not, that is said plainly rather than filled in from elsewhere. The register is a filing cabinet, not a manufacturer briefing, and a page that pretends otherwise is worth less than the file it misrepresents.

Mack holds 6 world manufacturer identifiers in NHTSA’s register, covering 2 countries of manufacture, against 60 models the decoder holds for the make. A WMI is registered by a corporate entity rather than by a brand, so the count reflects how the group organises its registrations rather than how many vehicles it builds — which is why some familiar names return only one.

## One register reads every VIN, this make included

The vehicle identification number is a federal standard and its layout does not change by badge or by vehicle class. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that builds the vehicle. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor block, laid out in a scheme it designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The final six are the serial.

Where a make-specific decoder would earn its keep is the descriptor block, and this is where we have to be straight about a gap. Positions four to eight belong to the manufacturer, and the federal register does not publish the key. It records who holds a prefix, what vehicle class the prefix covers, which country the holder filed in and the date the code was opened. It does not record that a particular character in position six means one axle configuration and another means a different one.

So this page prints no position-by-position table and no plant-code list, because we hold neither from a source we would defend. Decoding a real number returns those fields as the federal system resolves them for that specific vehicle, which is a different and far sturdier thing than a printed key.

## The 6 codes, printed in full

A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose. They are assigned centrally, published, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under this name the register holds 6 of them, and here is the whole set rather than a selection.

Recorded against the United States: 1M1, filed as Truck; 1M2, filed as Incomplete Vehicle; and 1M3, filed as Incomplete Vehicle. All three carry a registration date of 10 April 2015.

Recorded against Canada: 2M1, filed as Truck; 2M2, filed as Incomplete Vehicle; and 2M3, filed as Incomplete Vehicle. All three carry a registration date of 30 January 2017.

That is the entire entry. The symmetry is worth a moment: the same three third characters appear on both sides, 1, 2 and 3, and the same pattern of vehicle types sits behind them — one Truck code and two Incomplete Vehicle codes on each side. The leading character is the only thing that separates the two groups, and it follows the country the holder filed in: 1 on the United States codes, 2 on the Canadian ones.

Read that carefully, because it is easy to over-read. The leading character tracks the country recorded against the registering entity. It records where the registrant filed, which is not the same as where a vehicle was assembled. The register does not record which building a given truck was assembled in, and position eleven of an individual number is the plant character without a published key that turns it into a plant name. Two vehicles wearing the same badge can open with different characters, and neither is the &ldquo;proper&rdquo; one.

## Two registered companies, 3 codes each

The name against a code is a legal fact rather than a marketing one, and on this entry there are two of them. MACK TRUCKS INC. holds 1M1, 1M2 and 1M3. MACK CANADA INC. holds 2M1, 2M2 and 2M3. The split by company is also the split by country, exactly, with no code crossing over.

Two companies file under this name, and the register also returns a set of unrelated builders whose own names contain the word. Counting those in, or filtering them out, changes the total this make appears to hold. Read from NHTSA’s vPIC register and archived in data/vin-makes.json.

A decode that returns MACK CANADA INC. against a number beginning 2M is therefore the register working correctly. The company-name field answers a narrower question than it appears to answer: it names the registered entity that issued that number. It is not naming who designed the vehicle, who sold it, who warrants it or whose name is above the dealership door.

The register also declines to explain how the two companies relate to one another. It gives each a set of codes, a vehicle type against each code, a country and a date. It says nothing about ownership, structure or history, and this site does not supply that from memory. Two names, six codes, and the relationship between them left where the file leaves it.

## The 8 results that are not this make&rsquo;s at all

Here is the finding this page exists for. The register&rsquo;s manufacturer endpoint matches on the company name as a string of text. It does not resolve a brand, an entity or a corporate group. Ask it for this name and it returns every registered company whose name contains that run of letters, wherever in the name those letters happen to fall.

For this make the string is short and it sits inside a lot of ordinary words. The query returns 8 rows that are not this manufacturer&rsquo;s registrations:

1F9948, held by SMACK TRAILERS, LLC, filed as Trailer against the United States, registered 29 September 2015. 1T9546, held by BOA-MACK, INC., filed as Trailer, registered 21 March 2017. 1M9176, held by MACKS METAL FAB, filed as Trailer, registered 13 April 2017. 1M9336, held by MACKEY TRAILERS, filed as Trailer, registered 3 October 2017. 1M9023, held by MACKLIN WELDING, filed as Trailer, registered 16 March 2018. 1R9781, held by REMACKEL TRAILERS, INC, filed as Trailer, registered 20 July 2021. And two codes held by MACK TRUCKS OF UTAH,INC. — 1S9136, filed as Truck and registered 14 February 2017, and 1S9410, filed as Incomplete Vehicle and registered 2 March 2017. The punctuation in that name is reproduced as the register carries it.

Look at where the letters fall. In SMACK they are preceded by another letter. In BOA-MACK they follow a hyphen. In MACKS, MACKEY and MACKLIN they open a longer word. In REMACKEL they sit in the middle. A text match has no way to tell any of that from the real thing, and it does not try to.

Two of the eight sit closer to the line than the rest, because MACK TRUCKS OF UTAH,INC. contains not just the string but the words. The register still gives it its own codes, its own registration dates and its own filings, which is all the register knows about it. What that company is, and whether it has any connection to the manufacturer, is not in the file, and this page does not guess at it. It is reported as a separate registrant because that is what the register shows it to be.

Six of the eight are filed as Trailer, one as Truck and one as Incomplete Vehicle. All eight are recorded against the United States, and their registration dates run from 2015 to 2021 — a spread of filings by separate registrants over several years, arriving in the same result as a single manufacturer&rsquo;s entry purely because of how the endpoint matches.

## Three characters or six: what actually separates them

The thing that sorts the real registrations from the collisions is not the name at all. It is the length of the code.

Every one of this make&rsquo;s 6 codes is three characters long: 1M1, 1M2, 1M3, 2M1, 2M2, 2M3. Every one of the 8 others is six characters long: 1F9948, 1T9546, 1M9176, 1M9336, 1M9023, 1R9781, 1S9136, 1S9410. That is a structural difference in the federal scheme rather than a formatting quirk. A three-character identifier is issued to a manufacturer building at volume, and it occupies positions one to three of every number that manufacturer stamps.

That is why a six-character row cannot simply be added to a manufacturer&rsquo;s tally. It is not a spare prefix that the same company also uses. It belongs to a different company, issued under a different provision, and it identifies that company across two separate parts of the number.

The practical version, if you are holding a number rather than a spreadsheet: a VIN that opens 1M1, 1M2, 1M3, 2M1, 2M2 or 2M3 opens with one of this make&rsquo;s codes. A VIN that opens 1M9 does not, whatever the first two characters suggest, because 1M9176 and 1M9023 and 1M9336 are six-character identifiers belonging to three other companies. The near miss between 1M9 and 1M1 is exactly the kind of thing a text-matching endpoint cannot warn you about.

## Why counting them in changes the total

Now the arithmetic. Ask the register for this manufacturer and 14 rows come back. Filter to three-character identifiers and 6 remain. Neither figure is a mistake in the sense of somebody typing the wrong thing; both are what the endpoint returned. The difference is a decision about what a manufacturer&rsquo;s code count means.

We take the narrow reading. A count under a brand name should be the codes that brand&rsquo;s registering entities hold, which here is 6, held between two company names, spread across two countries. The other 8 rows are kept in the archived data, labelled as name matches, and excluded from every figure on this page and from the chart above.

It is worth knowing how uncommon this is, and we can say so because it has been counted rather than guessed. Across the 46 makes in the read behind this site, 10 return at least one name match and the rest return none at all. This make&rsquo;s 8 is the second-largest of those; only Ford returns more, at 18. For most of the makes on this site the question does not arise, and a page saying so about them is describing a quiet file rather than a rare one.

The reason it arises here is a property of the letters rather than of the company. A short string that turns up inside longer registered names — opening some of them, sitting in the middle of another, following a hyphen in a third — will collide with a register of company names sooner or later. Nothing has gone wrong. The endpoint is doing what it says it does, and the filtering is the reader&rsquo;s job.

## 4 of the 6 codes are filed as Incomplete Vehicle

The vehicle-type column carries the second real finding, and it changes what a decode is worth on a large part of what wears this badge.

Only 2 of the 6 codes are filed as Truck: 1M1 against the United States and 2M1 against Canada. The other 4 — 1M2, 1M3, 2M2 and 2M3 — are filed as Incomplete Vehicle. In the federal scheme that phrase means what it says: a vehicle that leaves its manufacturer without its final body, sold on to another company to be finished. On a heavy vehicle that generally means frame rails, running gear, driveline, cab and controls, with the working part of the machine yet to be built.

The split runs evenly across the two registered companies and both countries. MACK TRUCKS INC. holds one Truck code and two Incomplete Vehicle codes; MACK CANADA INC. holds the same arrangement. So the chassis registrations are not a side entry filed by one entity in one place. They are the larger half of the file on both sides of it.

The company that finishes such a vehicle is a manufacturer in its own right as far as the regulations are concerned. It builds the mixer drum, the tank, the tipper body, the crane, the refuse packer, the wrecker gear or whatever else the vehicle exists to do, and it certifies its own stage of the work. That is how vehicles which share almost nothing visually can all decode back to the same chassis builder.

None of that is a flaw in the decode. It is the decode doing exactly its job on a vehicle that two companies built, and answering for the half that carries the number. The mistake belongs to a reader who takes the chassis maker&rsquo;s name as a description of the whole machine.

## What a bare chassis means when you go looking for records

The practical consequence follows straight from the vehicle-type column. On a vehicle somebody else finished, there are two manufacturers, two certification records and potentially two recall histories, and a decode of the seventeen characters hands you one of them.

The chassis carries the number you decode and the certification label that goes with it. The finishing manufacturer adds its own label, recording its own name, its own date of completion and the ratings for the vehicle as completed. That second label is the one that tells you who built the equipment, and it is worth finding before you decide the decode has told you everything. Recalls follow the same division. A campaign against the chassis is keyed to the number you have. A campaign against the body, the crane, the tank or the lift belongs to the company that built it and may never appear against the chassis number at all. ## The registration dates, and what they are not

Every code in the register carries a date recording when it was registered. Read this entry&rsquo;s dates in order and there is very little to read: 3 codes on one day, 10 April 2015, and 3 codes on one day, 30 January 2017. There are no other dates against the make&rsquo;s own codes.

What that supports is narrow. It shows that the United States codes were opened together and the Canadian codes were opened together, and that the two groups were opened nearly two years apart. It does not show that anything was built on either date, that anything changed on either date, or that the codes were used in that order.

The field is easy to read as more than it is, so it is worth stating flatly. A registration date is the date a code was entered in the register. It is not a build date, not a sale date, not a first-titling date and not a model year. Codes can be registered ahead of use and can sit unused. A date in this entry is evidence about a filing and nothing more.

The model year of an actual vehicle lives at position ten of its own number, and it is read against our [model-year chart](https://baronauto1.com/vehicle-history/vin-year-chart/) rather than inferred from anything on this page. If a code&rsquo;s registration date and a vehicle&rsquo;s model year seem to disagree, the model year is the one describing the vehicle.

## Four vehicle types listed, two against the codes

The register answers a second, separate question about a make: which vehicle types it associates with the name. For this one it returns four — Truck, Bus, Incomplete Vehicle and Trailer.

Set that beside the codes and the two lists do not match. The 6 codes are filed under two types only, Truck and Incomplete Vehicle. Nothing in the make&rsquo;s own register entry is filed as Bus or as Trailer, and the register gives no explanation for the difference. We are not going to invent one. Two fields, drawn from two different queries, answering two different questions, and they disagree.

What that means for a reader is a caution rather than a finding. A vehicle-type list attached to a make name is not the same claim as a vehicle type filed against a code, and neither is a description of a specific vehicle. The type on a code tells you how the register classifies vehicles issued numbers under it. Confirming that a particular vehicle matches its advert is still a matter of decoding that vehicle&rsquo;s own number and then looking at the vehicle.

It is also worth noticing that Trailer is the type carried by 6 of the 8 name-matched rows. Whether those two facts are connected is not something the file records, so it is not something this page will assert.

## 60 models, and why this page names none of them

The federal decoder holds 60 models for this make. That is its vocabulary for the name — the set of model names a decode can return when it resolves a specific number, across all years rather than a current line-up.

The archived pull behind this page carries that count and not the roster. Where we hold the list of names, we print it; here we hold the count, so the count is what you get. Reciting a model list from memory would read to you exactly like reporting the data, and the whole value of a page like this rests on those two things staying distinguishable.

The count is not the useful part in any case. What a buyer wants is the model returned for one particular vehicle, and that comes from decoding that vehicle&rsquo;s number. A roster would only tell you what the register knows about the make in general.

And a model name is not a specification. The register knows the model line. It does not know the engine, the axle configuration, the ratio, the gearbox, the wheelbase or the equipment a particular vehicle left the factory with, and on a working vehicle those are most of what determines whether it suits the job. ## What the decode will not tell you

This is the section that does the most work, because the gap between what people expect a VIN to carry and what it actually carries is wider than any register finding on this page.

The number is a build identity. It exists so a regulator can tie a recall campaign to a batch, an insurer can tie a policy to an object, and a state can tie a title to that same object. It was never designed to describe a vehicle&rsquo;s condition today, and it has no field for any of the following.

**Service history.** Nothing about oil changes, injectors, brake work, aftertreatment servicing or the last time anything was inspected reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. On a vehicle maintained by independent workshops or by its own operator there may be no central record anywhere, only a folder of paperwork — which is worth asking for and worth reading line by line when it appears.

**Whether a recall was actually completed.** The federal lookup tells you whether a campaign is recorded as open or remedied against a specific number, which is free and worth running. It does not prove that any previous owner presented the vehicle, and it does not cover work done outside the campaign system. Read the campaign text rather than only the flag.

**What was fitted, and what was changed afterwards.** A build record describes how something was configured when it was made, and how much of that survives varies by manufacturer. No historical decode shows a component swapped, an assembly rebuilt, equipment added or a body replaced years later. Original specification and current specification are two different claims, and only the first has any chance of living in a record. **Condition, hours, mileage accuracy and damage that never reached a file.** A decode reads the build. Damage enters the record only where an insurer or a state filed something, and a repair paid for privately leaves no trace at all. ## Reading the number off the vehicle

Whatever the advert says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle, read with your own eyes and read from more than one place.

Start with the certification label, which is a federal requirement rather than a manufacturer courtesy and therefore a dependable second reading. On a completed vehicle, look for the finishing manufacturer&rsquo;s label as well as the chassis one; both should be present, and both are worth photographing. Two readings that disagree is a finding rather than a transcription problem to be shrugged off. So is a label that looks newer than the surface around it, or fixings that have obviously been disturbed. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it has cost anyone a journey. ## The records around the number, and the order to run them

The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-vehicle money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it.

Get the full seventeen characters from the seller and validate the check digit first, because a number that fails is a transcription error until proved otherwise and finding that out early costs nothing. Then decode it, and confirm that what comes back agrees with the advert. Note which code issued the number, read the company name as the registered entity rather than the badge, and note the vehicle type — if it is Incomplete Vehicle, you now know to go looking for the second manufacturer.

Then do the part no record covers. Read the numbers off the vehicle, compare them character by character with the paperwork, ask for the maintenance file, and book [an inspection](https://baronauto1.com/buying-guides/used-car-pre-purchase-inspection/) by somebody who knows the class of vehicle. ### Is there an official Mack VIN decoder?

Not a separate one, and none is needed. These vehicles carry the same 17-character number as everything else built for this market, and the federal register resolves the manufacturer prefix for every make on the same terms. A general decoder handles the marque.

### What are the Mack WMI codes?

The register holds 6. Recorded against the United States: 1M1, filed as Truck, and 1M2 and 1M3, both filed as Incomplete Vehicle. Recorded against Canada: 2M1, filed as Truck, and 2M2 and 2M3, both filed as Incomplete Vehicle.

### Why does a raw name query return more than 6?

Because a raw query returns 14 rows, not 6. ### My VIN starts 1M9. Is that a Mack?

Not according to the register. 1M9176, 1M9336 and 1M9023 are six-character identifiers belonging to MACKS METAL FAB, MACKEY TRAILERS and MACKLIN WELDING respectively, all filed as Trailer. This make&rsquo;s codes are 1M1, 1M2, 1M3, 2M1, 2M2 and 2M3. The resemblance between 1M9 and 1M1 is a coincidence of the character set, not a family relationship.

### What does a six-character identifier mean?

It is the shorter form the register uses for some builders.That is why such a code cannot be added to a volume manufacturer&rsquo;s tally — it identifies a different company under a different arrangement.

### What does Incomplete Vehicle mean on a decode?

It means the code covers a vehicle that left the factory without its final body, for another company to finish. 4 of the 6 codes here are filed that way. The decode answers for the chassis and cab. Whatever was built onto it was made and certified by a different manufacturer, which has its own name, its own label on the vehicle and its own recall record.

### Why does my decode return MACK CANADA INC.?

Because the number opens with 2M1, 2M2 or 2M3, and all three are registered to that company. The register names the entity that issued the number, not the badge. It is a correct answer to a narrower question than the field appears to be answering, and it is not evidence that anything is wrong.

### Does the country in the result tell me where the vehicle was built?

No. The country records where the registering entity filed. It is not a statement about where a vehicle was assembled, and the federal data holds nothing that would let anyone refine it. Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, but the register publishes no key that turns it into a plant name.

### What do the registration dates mean?
