# Mazda VIN Decoder: Eleven Codes and Three Companies

## The short version

- There is no Mazda-only decoder, and there does not need to be one. Every vehicle built for this market carries the same seventeen-character number, and a single federal register reads all of them.
- What is genuinely Mazda-specific is the register entry: eleven world manufacturer identifiers, spread across three countries, filed under three separate company names.

Search for a Mazda VIN decoder and you get a page of input boxes, most of them arranged to suggest that this marque needs a reader of its own. It does not. The number stamped on a Mazda is built to the same federal standard as the number on a pickup, a van or a hatchback, and the register that turns the first three characters into a manufacturer is the same register for every one of them.

What is worth reading is what that register actually records for the make, because Mazda&rsquo;s entry has one feature that sends people to the search box convinced their lookup has failed. Those limits are the reason a page like this exists at all. Saying so plainly is more useful than another input box.

Mazda holds 11 world manufacturer identifiers in NHTSA’s register, covering 3 countries of manufacture, against 28 models the decoder holds for the make. A WMI is registered by a corporate entity rather than by a brand, so the count reflects how the group organises its registrations rather than how many vehicles it builds — which is why some familiar names return only one.

## One register reads every VIN, this make included

The vehicle identification number is a federal standard, and its layout does not vary by badge. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that builds the vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle in a scheme the manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The last six are the serial.

Because that structure is identical on everything certified for sale here, a general decoder handles a Mazda exactly as readily as anything else, and the phrase &ldquo;Mazda VIN decoder&rdquo; describes a search habit rather than a separate piece of software. Where a brand-specific decoder would genuinely earn its keep is the middle block, and this is the point at which we have to be honest about a gap. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. The register records who owns a prefix, what vehicle class the prefix covers, which country the entity is registered in and when the code was opened. It does not record that a particular letter in position five means one body style on a saloon and something else on a crossover.

So this page prints no position-by-position table for Mazda, and no plant-code list, because we do not have either from a source we would defend. Tables of that kind are published in several places. None of them is the register, and we do not hold one from a source we would defend. ## Eleven codes, three countries, three company names

A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under Mazda there are eleven of them, and they are not all filed by the same company.

Three companies hold the codes on a Mazda, and one of those registered names contains Toyota's. The register records the name and nothing about how the companies relate. A decode returns the registrant rather than the badge, so it can name a company an owner has never heard of, and nothing is wrong with the lookup when it does. Five codes sit under MAZDA MOTOR CORPORATION. Four sit under MAZDA MOTOR MANUFACTURING DE MEXICO S.A. DE C.V. Two sit under MAZDA TOYOTA MANUFACTURING, USA, INC. Three names, eleven codes, and the split follows the three countries the register records for the make: Japan, Mexico and the United States.

That arrangement is ordinary in the way registers work and surprising in the way buyers read them. A large manufacturer that assembles vehicles in more than one country generally establishes a separate legal entity in each, and each of those entities registers in its own right. The badge is a marketing fact and stays the same across all of it. The registrant is a legal fact and does not. The practical consequence for anyone decoding a number is that the company name in a result is answering a narrower question than it appears to be answering. It is telling you which registered entity issued that number. It is not telling you who designed the car, who sells it, who warrants it or whose name is on the dealership. On most makes nobody notices the difference, because the registered names all contain the badge. On this one, two of the eleven codes make the distinction impossible to ignore.

## Why a Mazda can decode under a name with Toyota in it

A decode of a Mazda can come back naming MAZDA TOYOTA MANUFACTURING, USA, INC., and it is easy to read that as evidence that the decoder is broken, the seller has lied, or the car is not what the badge says.

None of those is the case. The register lists two codes under that entity name, 7MU and 7MM, both recorded against the United States. They are Mazda&rsquo;s codes in the sense that matters here: they are part of the make&rsquo;s register entry, and a number that opens with either of them is a properly assigned number. The entity that filed for them is registered under a name that contains both words. A decode reports the registrant as filed, character for character, because that is the field&rsquo;s job.

We are not going to narrate anything beyond that, because the register does not carry it. The filing gives a name, a country and a date. It does not say who owns what, how a facility is organised, what is built there or how any of that came about, and this site does not fill in that kind of blank from memory. What matters for a buyer is only this. Seeing a manufacturer name that does not exactly match the badge is not, by itself, evidence of anything wrong. The checks that would actually expose a misrepresented car are different checks: whether the number on the car matches the number on the paperwork, whether the model and model year the decode returns match the advert, and what the title record says. A surprising company name is a fact about a filing cabinet. ## J, 3 and 7: the first character follows the country

Read the eleven codes as a list and a pattern falls straight out of them. The Japanese codes are JM1, JM2, JM3, JC1 and JC2. The Mexican codes are 3MZ, 3MY, 3MD and 3MV. The two United States codes are 7MU and 7MM. J, 3, 7 — the leading character tracks the country the entity is registered in, cleanly, across all eleven.

That is worth knowing because it answers a question buyers ask constantly and answers it in a narrow way. Two cars can wear the same badge, sit in the same forecourt at the same price, and open with different characters. The difference is where the number was issued. It is not a trim distinction, not a market distinction, not an indication that one car is the &ldquo;proper&rdquo; version and the other something lesser.

Keep one caution attached to it. The country field in the register describes the registered entity, not the specific building a car was screwed together in. It is a strong signal about assembly geography and a weak one about anything finer, and the federal data holds nothing that would let anyone refine it. Position eleven of an individual number is the plant character, but the register does not publish the key that turns it into a plant name, so this page does not print one.

The honest use of the first three characters is therefore narrower than it is often described, and still worth having. They tell you which entity issued the number and, on this make, which country that entity is registered in. Everything more specific about the vehicle sits from position four onward, in fields that only a decode of the actual number will return.

## Five, four and two: how the codes split by class

The register also files every code under a vehicle type, and Mazda&rsquo;s eleven split three ways. Five are Passenger Car. Four are Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle, the federal class that catches most of what the market calls an SUV or a crossover. Two are Truck.

Two things follow. The first is that a code does not correspond one-for-one to a class, or to an entity. MAZDA MOTOR CORPORATION holds both JM1 and JC1 as Passenger Car, and both JM2 and JC2 as Truck. MAZDA TOYOTA MANUFACTURING, USA, INC. holds both 7MU and 7MM as Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle. A single registered entity can therefore hold several codes filed under the same class, and the register does not record why any code was issued. It carries the code, the registrant, the class, the country and the opening date, and no reason for any of them.

The second is a caution about reading the class field too literally. Those three words are federal vehicle categories, not descriptions a salesperson would use. Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle is a regulatory classification with consequences for which safety standards apply, and it covers a wide range of shapes. A decode returning it is telling you how the vehicle was certified. It is not telling you the body style, the number of doors or the seating layout, and it should not be read as a verdict on whether something is &ldquo;really&rdquo; an SUV.

Nor does the class field cross-check the badge for you. It tells you what the register expects of vehicles issued numbers under that code. Confirming that a specific car matches its description is still a job for the decode of that car&rsquo;s own number, read against the advert, and then for your own eyes on the vehicle.

## The two newest codes in the entry

Read the opening dates in order and the register becomes a rough timeline of where the make has been setting up to issue numbers. Three of the Japanese codes were opened in 2015, alongside the first Mexican one. Another Japanese code and two more Mexican codes follow in 2016, and one more Japanese code in 2017. The fourth Mexican code opens in 2019. Then the two United States codes, in 2021 and 2022, are the most recent entries in the make&rsquo;s file.

What that sequence supports is narrow. It shows the order in which the codes were opened, and it shows that the two filed by the entity with Toyota in its name are the most recent additions to the entry — later than every Japanese and every Mexican code. The register does not record how many vehicles were issued numbers under any code, so the dates rank the filings and stop there.

Neither of the newest codes is a red flag. A code that appears in the public register is a code that was properly assigned, and unfamiliarity is a fact about the reader rather than about the car.

One caution before anyone over-reads the dates. An opening date is the date a code was registered. It is not the date a vehicle carrying it was built, sold or first titled, and codes are routinely opened ahead of production and can sit unused for a period. A date in this entry is evidence about a filing and nothing else. ## Twenty-eight models, and why this page names none of them

The federal register holds twenty-eight models for the make. That is the decoder&rsquo;s vocabulary for Mazda — the set of model names a decode can return when it resolves a specific number.

The pull this page works from carries that count and not the roster, so we are not going to print a model list. This is a smaller point than it sounds and a more important one than it looks. Every make page on this site works from one archived read of the register, and the rule is that we publish what that read contains. Reciting a model list from memory would be indistinguishable, to a reader, from reporting the data — and it is indistinguishable, to a reader, from reporting the data. Where we have the roster, we print it. Here we have the count, so the count is what you get.

The good news is that the count is not the useful part anyway. What a buyer wants is the model returned for one specific car, and that comes from decoding that car&rsquo;s number rather than from any list. The list would only ever tell you what the register knows about the make in general; the decode tells you what it holds about the vehicle you are being asked to pay for.

And a model name, however it arrives, is not a trim. The register knows the model line. It does not know which engine option, which drive configuration, which wheel, which interior or which options package a particular car left the factory with, and those are the distinctions that move the price on a used car. ## A register entry with no false matches

Most of the make pages on this site carry a warning about the same trap, so it is worth recording that Mazda avoids it. The register&rsquo;s name endpoint matches company names as text rather than resolving brands, which means asking it for a common word drags in every small builder, trailer shop and specialist converter whose registered name happens to contain that string. Readers of a raw result can easily conclude a marque holds a dozen codes it has nothing to do with, and different sites handle the noise differently, which is one reason code counts vary from page to page.

Querying the register for this make returns zero false matches. Nothing else on the register is filed under a name that catches the same string, so the entry a reader gets is the entry the company actually holds. Eleven codes, no strangers attached.

The make also registers under its own name rather than sitting beneath a parent group in the register. That is not true of every badge — several well-known marques hold no codes at all in their own right, and their numbers are issued under a parent&rsquo;s filing, which is why a search on the badge name returns almost nothing useful. Taken together, those two facts mean this page can be read at face value, and that a reader who runs the same query themselves will see the same eleven rows rather than a padded list needing to be filtered by hand. There is nothing to subtract.

## What the decode will not tell a Mazda buyer

This is the section that does the most work, because it is where the gap between what people expect from a VIN and what a VIN actually carries is widest.

The number is a build identity. It exists so that a regulator can tie a recall campaign to a batch of vehicles, an insurer can tie a policy to an object, and a state can tie a title to that same object. It was never designed to describe a vehicle&rsquo;s condition today, and it has no field for any of the following.

**Service history.** Nothing about oil changes, transmission fluid, brake work or the last time the cambelt was looked at reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. On a car maintained by independent workshops or by an owner in a driveway, there may be no central record anywhere — only a folder of receipts, which is worth asking for and worth reading properly when it appears.

**Whether a recall was actually done.** This one is worth being careful about. The federal recall lookup will tell you whether a campaign is open against a specific number, which is genuinely useful and free. What no decode does is confirm that a previous owner ever took the car in. A campaign showing as remedied means a remedy was recorded; a campaign showing as open means the work is outstanding as far as the system knows. **Which options are fitted.** A build record can describe how a car was configured when it was made, and how much of that is recoverable varies enormously by manufacturer. What no historical decode shows is a change made afterwards: an accessory added, a component swapped, a feature disabled, a wheel and tyre package replaced. Original specification and current specification are two different claims, and only the first has any chance of living in a record. **Condition, mileage accuracy and damage that never reached a record.** A decode reads the build. Damage enters the file only where an insurer or a state filed something, and a well-repaired collision paid for privately leaves no trace at all. ## Reading the number off the car

Whatever the listing says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle. Read it yourself rather than copying it from an advert, and read it from more than one place.

The usual locations on any passenger vehicle are the plate visible through the base of the windscreen on the driver&rsquo;s side, and the certification label in the driver&rsquo;s door aperture. That label is a federal requirement rather than a manufacturer courtesy, which is why it makes a dependable second reading. Two readings that disagree is a finding in itself rather than a transcription problem to be shrugged off. So is a label that looks newer than the aperture around it, or fixings that have clearly been disturbed. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it has cost anybody a journey. ## The records that sit around the number

The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-car money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it.

Three retrievals do most of the work, in this order. The federal recall lookup is free, per-vehicle and authoritative on open campaigns. Know the boundaries of the free tools before leaning on them. ## A sequence for a used Mazda

Put together, the order looks like this, and none of the first four steps requires leaving home.

Get the full seventeen characters from the seller and validate the check digit. A number that fails is a transcription error until proved otherwise, and finding that out early costs nothing.

Decode it. Confirm that the model and model year returned agree with the advert, because a disagreement here ends the conversation before anyone has driven anywhere. Note which code issued the number and read the company name for what it is — the registered entity, which on two of the eleven codes is a name containing the word Toyota, and which is not a claim about the badge.

Run the free lookups. Recalls and the theft flag are per-vehicle, free and fast, and either can settle the matter from the kitchen table.

Buy the title history once and read the chain rather than the headline. Which states, in what order, with what readings and what brands. A short chain with long ownerships reads well. A car that has crossed several states quickly is asking a question the seller should be able to answer without hesitating.

Then do the part no record covers. Read the number off the car with your own eyes, from the windscreen and the door aperture, and compare it character by character with the number you decoded and the number on the title. Ask for the service folder and read it. ## Selling one

The same facts, run in the other direction, are worth money to a seller and cost nothing to use.

Publish the number. A seller who prints the VIN in the listing is telling every serious buyer that the record will survive being checked, and the buyers who care are the ones who pay properly. Photograph the windscreen plate and the door-aperture label clearly enough to read.

State the decoded model and model year rather than the description on the badge, and pull the title history yourself before a buyer does. Leading with a clean chain is stronger than defending one under questioning.

And if the car carries one of the two United States codes, expect the company-name question and answer it the way this page does. A seller who can explain that the register lists a registered entity rather than a badge looks like a seller who has read their own paperwork — which is exactly the impression worth having when the negotiation starts.
