# Mopar VIN Decoder: Mopar Is Not a Vehicle Make

## The short version

- There is no Mopar VIN decoder, and there is nothing for one to read. The federal register holds no manufacturer code under the name, no model list, and no registered company whose name catches the word.

Type &ldquo;mopar vin decoder&rdquo; into a search box and you get the same wall of input fields that comes back for any marque. It is worth saying plainly, at the top, that the wall is misleading in this case in a way it is not for the others. The federal register that turns the first three characters of a vehicle identification number into a manufacturer holds nothing at all under this name. Not a short entry. Not a partial one. Nothing.

This page works from one archived read of that register, taken on 5 September 2026, and reports what the read contains rather than what anybody remembers. For this entry it contains three zeros: no world manufacturer identifier registered under the name, no models held against it, and no unrelated company caught by a text search for the same string. None of which makes the search a mistake. It makes it a search aimed slightly to one side of what the searcher actually needs, which is almost always the identity of a vehicle rather than the identity of a brand — the year, the model line and the class of the thing the part is being bought or the service being booked for. That vehicle has a number, the number decodes, and the register that reads it is the one described below.

Mopar holds no world manufacturer identifier of its own. Its codes are registered to FCA, which holds 95 of them, and a Mopar VIN begins with one of those. Querying NHTSA’s register for the brand name instead returns nothing at all — the endpoint matches company names as text, and nothing on the register is filed under a name that catches the string. That is why brand-name WMI lookups disagree between sites, and it does not affect the 0 models the decoder holds for the make.

## What the register holds under this name

Take the three fields in turn, because each is doing different work and each answers a slightly different version of the question people arrive with.

The first is the manufacturer code count, and it is zero. A world manufacturer identifier is the three-character prefix at the front of every VIN, assigned centrally to the legal entity that issues numbers for a vehicle. Nothing in the register is registered under this name, so no VIN anywhere begins with a code filed under it. That is not a gap in our pull; it is what the register says.

The second is the model count, and it is also zero. When the federal system resolves a number, one of the things it can return is a model name, drawn from a set held against the make. Here that set is empty, which follows from the first zero. A make with no codes issues no numbers, and a make that issues no numbers has no models for the decoder to name. This is the field that separates this entry from the other badges that hold no codes of their own: they still carry a roster the decoder can return, and this one does not.

The third is the false-match count, and it is zero as well. That field can carry a warning. The register&rsquo;s name endpoint matches company names as plain text rather than resolving brands, so asking it for a common word tends to drag in every trailer shop, converter and small builder whose registered name happens to contain the string. Readers of a raw result can easily conclude a marque holds codes it has nothing to do with. Here there is no noise to filter, because there is nothing filed under a name that catches the word — neither the brand itself nor anybody else.

Put together, a query on this name returns an empty set rather than a short answer, and that is the honest description of it. Anyone publishing a code table under this heading has produced it from somewhere other than the register.

## What you are almost certainly trying to decode

Search terms are blunt instruments, and this one is a good example of a phrase that describes the context a person is in rather than the object they need to look up. People type it while holding a box, a catalogue page, an invoice or an order screen, and what they are trying to establish is whether a given item belongs on a given vehicle.

The seventeen-character number will help with part of that and not with the rest, so it is worth being precise about the split. A decode of the vehicle&rsquo;s number will confirm the manufacturer entity that issued it, the model year, the model line as the register holds it, and the federal vehicle class. That is a real narrowing. The model year is stamped in position ten of the number and confirmed by the decode.

What the decode will not do is confirm the engine option, the drivetrain, the axle, the brake package, the wheel size or any of the other distinctions that decide whether a part fits. Those live in the build record rather than in the register, and how much of a build record is recoverable varies enormously by manufacturer and by age of vehicle. One more thing worth stating plainly. A part number is not a VIN and no federal system reads it. The register is a register of vehicles and of the entities that issue vehicle numbers. Whatever catalogue a component number belongs to, it is a manufacturer&rsquo;s internal scheme, published or not published at the manufacturer&rsquo;s discretion, and the public vehicle register has no field for it.

## One federal system reads every VIN

The vehicle identification number is a federal standard and its layout does not change with the badge. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that builds the vehicle. Positions four to eight describe the vehicle in a scheme each manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit, computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The last six are the serial.

Because that structure is identical on everything certified for sale here, a general decoder handles any vehicle as readily as any other, and a brand-specific decoder is a marketing idea rather than a technical one. Where a brand-specific reader would genuinely earn its keep is the middle block, and this is where the limits have to be admitted. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor scheme, and the register does not publish the key to it. It records who holds a prefix, what vehicle class the prefix covers, which country the entity filed in and when the code was opened. It does not record that a particular character in position five means one body style on a saloon and something else on a van. So this page prints no position-by-position table and no plant-code list, because we have neither from a source we would defend. Tables of that kind are published in several places, and copying one would be the opposite of what this page is for.

## The entry the codes actually sit under

An empty entry still points somewhere. The file records this one as sitting beneath a parent in the register — the FCA group — and that parent entry is where the codes on the relevant vehicles live. It holds ninety-five world manufacturer identifiers.

Those ninety-five are filed under three registered company names: FCA CANADA INC., FCA ITALY S.P.A. and FCA US LLC. Three names, ninety-five codes, and a decode of any number issued under one of them returns the registered entity exactly as filed, in capitals, punctuation and all. That is the field doing its job. It reports which legal entity issued the number. It is not reporting who designed the vehicle, who sells it, who warrants it, whose name is over the dealership or whose logo is on the parts box.

This is the point at which a lot of people conclude their lookup has broken. It has not. A large manufacturer that builds in more than one country generally establishes a separate legal entity in each, and each of those entities registers in its own right. The badge stays constant across all of it because a badge is a marketing fact. The registrant does not, because a registrant is a legal fact. ## Where the ninety-five filings sit

The register records a country against most codes, and on the parent entry the spread is wide: fifty-three filed in the United States, thirty-five in Canada, two in Japan, two in Italy and one in Thailand. Five countries in total, with a distinct majority in North America.

Mopar holds no manufacturer code, and the decoder holds no models under the name either. What is charted here is the parent group’s entry, by the country each code was registered against — those are the vehicles a VIN decode can actually resolve. Read from NHTSA’s vPIC register and archived in data/vin-makes.json.

Read that carefully, because the field is more often misread than any other in the register. The country recorded against a code describes where the registering entity filed. It is not a statement that a vehicle was assembled there, and it should never be quoted as one. A decode that returns a country you were not expecting has told you something about a filing cabinet, not about a production line.

The sample rows we hold from the parent entry make that concrete. There are codes filed to FCA US LLC — a company name with US in it — where the country field reads JAPAN, and another filed to the same company where it reads THAILAND. Nothing is wrong with those rows. They are exactly what the field is for, and they are the clearest possible demonstration that the entity name and the country field answer two separate questions. Anyone reading either as an assembly address will get a wrong answer on precisely these rows.

For a parts or service question this matters less than people fear. The country in a decode result is rarely load-bearing for fitment. The model year and the model line are.

## Two codes with no country at all

Two of the ninety-five carry no country in the register. The field is simply empty, and the count above treats them as unattributed rather than guessing.

One of them appears in the capped sample of rows we hold: 1B3, filed to FCA US LLC and classed as a Passenger Car, with nothing in the country column. It is a perfectly ordinary code in every other respect. The register carries the prefix, the registrant and the class, and leaves the country blank.

Two things follow. The first is that a decode can legitimately return no country, and that is not an error to be chased. The second is a general caution about register data that applies well beyond this entry: fields are populated by filings, filings are made by people, and a blank field means nothing was recorded rather than that something was hidden. A site that fills those blanks in for you has stopped reporting and started guessing.

## Thirty, twenty-two, eighteen, seventeen, eight: the class split

Every code in the register is filed under a federal vehicle class, and the parent entry&rsquo;s ninety-five split five ways. Thirty are Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle, the class that catches most of what the market calls an SUV or a crossover. Twenty-two are Incomplete Vehicle, the class for a vehicle that leaves the manufacturer requiring further work before it is finished. Eighteen are Truck. Seventeen are Passenger Car. Eight are Bus.

The Incomplete Vehicle count is the one worth pausing on for anybody arriving here with a parts question, because it is the second-largest group. A chassis that was completed by somebody else is a routine object in this entry, not an exotic one. If the vehicle you are working on was bodied, converted or finished after it left the original line, the decode will describe what the original manufacturer certified and will say nothing whatever about the second stage. There is a separate certification label for that work, and there is no field in the register that links the two.

The class field also deserves the same caution the country field gets. Those five phrases are regulatory categories with consequences for which safety standards apply. They are not descriptions a salesperson would use, and they do not tell you body style, door count or seating layout. A decode returning Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle is telling you how something was certified, not settling an argument about whether it is really an SUV.

## Reading a few rows, and why we will not total them

Our archive holds a capped sample of the parent entry&rsquo;s rows rather than all ninety-five, and the cap is worth being open about, because the sample is misleading if it is read as a summary.

The rows in it include 1C3 and 4C3 filed to FCA US LLC against the United States, 2B3 and 2C3 filed to FCA CANADA INC. against Canada, JB3 and JE3 filed to FCA US LLC against Japan, and MN3 filed to the same company against Thailand. Every row in the sample happens to be classed as a Passenger Car.

That last sentence is the trap. Passenger Car is the fourth-largest class in the full entry, behind Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle, Incomplete Vehicle and Truck. Anyone totalling the sample and publishing the result would report a make that is overwhelmingly passenger cars, which the full counts flatly contradict. So the sample is used here for illustration only — a row shown to demonstrate what a row looks like — and every count on this page comes from the aggregate fields instead. It is a small discipline and it is the difference between a page that reports data and a page that invents it.

## Eight badges in thirty-six hold no code of their own

An empty code count sounds like a data problem the first time you see it. It is common enough to be a category rather than an exception: of the thirty-six makes in this read, eight return no world manufacturer identifier under their own name, and their numbers are issued under a parent&rsquo;s filing instead.

What separates this entry from the other seven is the model count. The others hold rosters — sets of model names the decoder can return for a specific number, even though the codes are filed elsewhere. Here that field is empty too, and the pair of zeros together is the register&rsquo;s way of saying that the name has no vehicles behind it at all, rather than vehicles registered under somebody else&rsquo;s name.

The practical version of that distinction: on the other seven, a brand-name search is unhelpful but the badge still corresponds to vehicles you can decode. Here, the badge corresponds to no vehicle in the register, and the useful search is for the vehicle itself.

## What the federal decode does not carry

This is the section that does the most work on every one of these pages, because the gap between what people expect a VIN to carry and what it actually carries is wide, and it is widest for exactly the questions that bring somebody to a parts or service search.

The number is a build identity. It exists so a regulator can tie a recall campaign to a batch of vehicles, an insurer can tie a policy to an object, and a state can tie a title to that same object. It was never designed to describe a vehicle&rsquo;s condition today, and it has no field for any of the following.

**Service history.** Nothing about oil changes, fluid services, brake work or the last time a belt was inspected reaches the register, and none of it is encoded in the number. On a vehicle maintained by independent workshops or by an owner on a driveway there may be no central record anywhere, only a folder of receipts — worth asking for, and worth reading rather than weighing.

**Whether a recall was actually completed.** It matters here because a recall campaign is a parts-and-labour event. The federal recall lookup will tell you whether a campaign is recorded as open or remedied against a specific number, which is free and genuinely useful. What it does not do is prove that a previous owner ever presented the vehicle, and it does not show work done outside the campaign system. **Which parts are on the vehicle now.** A build record, where one is recoverable, describes how something was configured when it was made. No historical decode shows a change made afterwards — a component swapped, an accessory added, a package replaced, a repair carried out with whatever was to hand. Original specification and current specification are two different claims, and only the first has any chance of living in a record. For anyone ordering a part, the second is the one that governs, and the only reliable source for it is the vehicle in front of you.

**Condition, mileage accuracy and damage that never reached a file.** A decode reads the build. Damage enters a record only where an insurer or a state filed something, and a well-repaired collision paid for privately leaves no trace at all. ## Reading the number off the vehicle

Whatever the advert, the invoice or the previous order says, the number to work from is the one on the vehicle, read with your own eyes and read from more than one place.

The usual locations on a passenger vehicle are the plate visible through the base of the windscreen on the driver&rsquo;s side and the certification label in the driver&rsquo;s door aperture. That label is a federal requirement rather than a manufacturer courtesy, which is why it makes a dependable second reading. Before anything else, run the check digit. Position nine is computed from the other sixteen characters, so a mistyped number usually fails arithmetically before it has cost anybody an order or a journey. Two readings that disagree with each other is a finding rather than a transcription problem to be shrugged off, and so is a label that looks newer than the aperture around it. ## A working order for a parts or service question

Put together, the sequence is short, and none of it costs anything.

Get the full seventeen characters off the vehicle rather than from a listing, and validate the check digit. A number that fails is a transcription error until proved otherwise, and finding that out first is free.

Decode it. Note the model year, the model line as the register holds it, the vehicle class, and the registered entity that issued the number. Expect that entity to be a company name rather than a badge, and expect the country field to describe a filing rather than a factory.

Run the recall lookup while you have the number in front of you. It is free, it is per-vehicle, and an open campaign is a parts question the manufacturer has already answered and will usually pay for.

Then go past the register for the things the register does not hold. Trim, engine and fitted equipment come from the build record if they come from anywhere, and from the vehicle itself if they do not. For anything with the word &ldquo;fits&rdquo; attached to it, the vehicle is the source of truth and the decode is a narrowing tool.

## If you are buying the vehicle rather than a part for it

Some people arrive at a search like this while looking at a vehicle rather than a component, and for them the register work is only the opening move.

The decode is the cheap part and the fast part. The record is where used-vehicle money is won and lost, and the record is retrieved rather than decoded — it lives in title files, insurer reports and recall databases, keyed to the number rather than encoded inside it. ### Is there a Mopar VIN decoder?

It will not confirm engine, drivetrain, axle or fitted equipment, because those belong to the build record rather than to the register — and it will never show a change made after the vehicle was built.

### Why does the decode name a company I have never heard of?

Because the field reports the registered entity that issued the number, exactly as filed. Three company names hold the ninety-five codes on the parent entry, and none of them is a badge. A company name that does not match the badge is not evidence of anything wrong.

### What does the country in a decode result mean?

It records where the registering entity filed, not where the vehicle was assembled. The parent entry has codes filed to a company with US in its name where the country reads Japan, and another where it reads Thailand. Those rows are the clearest illustration that the entity name and the country field answer different questions.

### Why do some codes have no country?

Two of the ninety-five simply have the field empty in the register, including 1B3, which is filed to FCA US LLC and classed as a Passenger Car. A blank field means nothing was recorded. We leave it blank rather than guessing, and so should any decoder.

### What does Incomplete Vehicle mean in a decode result?

It is the federal class for a vehicle that leaves the original manufacturer needing further work before it is finished, and it accounts for twenty-two of the parent entry&rsquo;s ninety-five codes. ### Will any decode show the service history?

Not from the federal data. Servicing, fluids, wear items and repairs are not encoded in the number and do not reach the register. Records of that kind exist only where somebody kept them, which on an older vehicle usually means receipts rather than a database.
