# Options by VIN: Safety Equipment Yes, Comfort Equipment No

## The short version

- Safety equipment is decodable and comfort equipment is not. That single split explains every confusing result you will get from an options lookup.
- NHTSA publishes stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, adaptive cruise, blind spot warning, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, seat rows and turbocharging.
- It publishes no colour, no interior trim, no audio system, no sunroof and no wheel package.
- The reason is that vPIC exists for safety certification. Equipment that affects crash outcomes is submitted; equipment that affects comfort is not.

&ldquo;Options by VIN&rdquo; is really two questions wearing one name, and a decoder answers one of them well and the other not at all.

10 of the 10 variables checked here are published by NHTSA’s decoder, so this question genuinely can be answered from the seventeen characters. Whether any particular VIN comes back populated is a weaker matter: manufacturers submit different levels of detail and older vehicles carry less.

## Safety in, comfort out

NHTSA&rsquo;s vPIC decoder publishes 144 variables, and the equipment among them is almost entirely safety equipment.

You get anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, traction control, adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, the number of seat rows, and whether the engine is turbocharged. Recent vehicles return a good deal more in the same vein — automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, rear cross-traffic alert.

You do not get exterior colour, interior colour or material, audio system, navigation, sunroof, heated seats, wheel package or any trim-level styling option.

The reason is purpose. Manufacturers submit this data to satisfy safety certification requirements, and the agency collects what bears on crash avoidance and crash outcomes. Whether the seats are leather does not.

## What that makes it good for

The safety half is genuinely valuable, and it is the half buyers most often get wrong from a listing.

Driver-assistance systems were optional on most models for years before becoming standard, and the same model year frequently exists both with and without them. A listing saying &ldquo;loaded&rdquo; or &ldquo;fully optioned&rdquo; is not evidence, and a photograph rarely settles it.

If you specifically want blind spot monitoring or forward collision warning — and on a used car those are exactly the features worth wanting — the decode is the cheapest way to check before travelling to see the vehicle.

## Reading a blank correctly

The commonest misreading of an options decode is treating an empty field as a no.

It is not. It means the manufacturer did not submit that variable for that vehicle. Submission requirements have expanded over time, so a vehicle from the early 2000s may return almost nothing while a recent one returns dozens of populated fields.

So: an explicit value is reliable. A blank is inconclusive and needs checking against the car.

This is different from a variable that vPIC does not publish at all. ## For the comfort half, the sticker

The original window sticker — the Monroney label — is the document that lists factory options with their prices. It is what a build-sheet lookup is usually trying to approximate.

It is federally required on new vehicles, it is specific to the individual car, and for many makes and recent model years it can genuinely be recovered from the VIN. Failing that, a franchised dealer for the make can usually retrieve the original build specification from the manufacturer&rsquo;s own system, which is more complete than any public source.

## Verifying against the car

Where the decode is silent, the equipment itself is the evidence, and some of it is easy to confirm in a few minutes.

Blind spot monitoring usually shows as a small indicator in or beside the door mirrors. Adaptive cruise control has different steering-wheel controls from ordinary cruise and typically a sensor behind the grille badge. Lane departure systems announce themselves on the instrument cluster at start-up. Heated seats have switches.

Check the systems actually work rather than that the buttons exist. A blind spot system with a failed sensor still has the indicator in the mirror, and the fault only appears when it should be alerting and does not.

## Why this affects price

Driver-assistance equipment moves used values more than most cosmetic options, partly because it is genuinely useful and partly because it cannot be retrofitted.

You can add leather. You cannot practically add forward collision warning to a car that left the factory without it, because the sensors, wiring and software are integrated. That permanence is why the decode is worth running before agreeing a price on a car being sold as having them.

It also matters for insurance in some cases, and for what a lender&rsquo;s valuation system assumes about the vehicle.

## The check worth more than the options list

Equipment decides how pleasant a car is to own. The vehicle record decides whether owning it is a mistake.

An open safety recall is free to fix and is frequently outstanding on used cars. A title branded in another state follows the VIN and not the paperwork in front of you. A reported odometer history inconsistent with the reading is the clearest fraud signal available.

## Common questions

### Can I get a list of factory options from a VIN?

Only the safety equipment. NHTSA publishes stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, adaptive cruise, blind spot and lane departure warning, collision warning, seat rows and turbocharging. Colour, audio, sunroof and interior trim are not in the federal record at all.

### Why can I not get the colour from a VIN?

Because vPIC exists for safety certification and colour has no bearing on it. The manufacturer holds that information; the federal government did not ask for it.

### My decode shows nothing for blind spot warning. Does the car not have it?

Unknown. A blank means the manufacturer did not submit that field, which is common on older vehicles. Check the mirrors and the instrument cluster on the car itself.

### Where do I get the full options list?

The original window sticker, or a franchised dealer retrieving the build specification from the manufacturer&rsquo;s system. Both are more complete than any third-party lookup.

### Can driver-assistance features be added later?

Not practically. The sensors, wiring and software are integrated at build, which is why the equipment affects used values and why it is worth verifying before agreeing a price.

### How do I test the systems actually work?

Confirm behaviour rather than buttons. Indicators and switches remain present after a sensor fails, and the fault only shows when the system should act and does not.
