# Transmission by VIN: Telling a CVT From an Automatic

## The short version

- Transmission is decodable. NHTSA publishes two variables — transmission style and transmission speeds — and both come from the manufacturer.

## What the decoder gives you

Two variables, both submitted by the manufacturer for certification.

**Transmission style** distinguishes the design: conventional automatic, manual, continuously variable, dual-clutch or automated manual. This is the field that resolves the ambiguity a listing leaves open.

**Transmission speeds** gives the number of forward gears. On a conventional automatic this is directly useful, since manufacturers frequently offered different gear counts across a model run and the later ones behave differently.

Together they identify the transmission family precisely enough to research it, which is the point.

## The distinction that actually costs money

A continuously variable transmission has no fixed gears. It uses a belt or chain running between variable-diameter pulleys, which is why a car fitted with one accelerates with a characteristic drone rather than through discrete shifts.

It is not a worse design and many are entirely reliable. What it is, unambiguously, is a different thing to own. CVTs generally require a specific fluid at specific intervals, are less tolerant of neglected servicing, and when they fail are usually replaced rather than rebuilt — because comparatively few independent shops rebuild them.

A dual-clutch transmission is different again: essentially two automated manual gearboxes sharing a housing. They shift quickly and can be unhappy in stop-start traffic, and their clutch packs are a wear item in a way an automatic&rsquo;s torque converter is not.

All three appear in an advertisement as &ldquo;automatic&rdquo;. Only the decode reliably separates them before you view the car.

## What it cannot see

The record is written once, at certification, and never updated.

A transmission replaced under warranty, rebuilt at 120,000 miles, or swapped for a different unit entirely does not change the decode. On a high-mileage car this is a real limitation, because the transmission is one of the components most likely to have been replaced.

The decode therefore tells you what design the car was engineered around — which is what you need in order to ask the right questions — rather than what is currently bolted in. Service records answer the second question and nothing else does.

## Reading the failure record alongside it

Once the decode has identified the transmission family, the federal complaint database becomes readable in a useful way.

NHTSA records owner complaints by component, and power train is one of the categories. That lets you check whether a particular model year attracted a cluster of transmission complaints rather than relying on forum sentiment, which is heavily skewed towards people having problems.

The useful framing: complaint counts are confounded by how many units were sold, so comparing one model against another is unreliable. Comparing one model year against its own neighbours is much more informative, because the sales volume is roughly constant.

## The service question the decode sets up

Knowing the transmission style tells you which service history question to ask, and the answer is frequently revealing.

For a CVT, ask when the fluid was last changed and with what. The specific fluid matters and a generic substitute is a genuine problem. For a dual-clutch, ask about clutch replacement and any software updates. For a conventional automatic, ask about fluid and filter service intervals.

A seller with no answer is not necessarily hiding anything, but on a transmission design with a specific service requirement, no evidence of that service having happened is a priced-in risk rather than a neutral fact.

## If it says manual

A manual designation is worth verifying against the car, because it is the one transmission style buyers occasionally get wrong in the opposite direction.

Manual transmissions have their own wear pattern — clutch, release bearing, synchromesh — and their own advantage, which is that the failure modes are cheaper and more widely repairable than any automatic. They also narrow the resale market considerably in most segments.

None of that is visible in the decode beyond the style itself, but the style is the input to the calculation.

The transmission decode is a five-second check that changes what you are looking at, and it pairs naturally with the checks that decide whether the car is worth seeing at all.
