# Winnebago VIN Decoder: Four Codes, and Not All Are Towed

## The short version

What is worth reading instead is the register entry itself, and on this make the entry is unusually informative for its size. It holds four codes. Most of the pages in this series have to summarise, because a make with thirty or forty registered codes has to be counted and grouped rather than listed. Four fits in a small table. The reason is a split. The four codes are not filed under a single vehicle class. Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the middle block, and this is the point at which honesty is more useful than another table. Positions four to eight are the manufacturer&rsquo;s own descriptor scheme, and the federal register does not publish the key to it. The register records who holds a prefix, which vehicle class the prefix is filed under, which country the entity filed in, and the date the code was opened. It does not record what a particular character in position six means on one floorplan as against another.

## Four codes, and the whole entry printed rather than summarised

A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose for itself. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under this make there are four of them: 54C, 1WV, 1WW and 1WT.

Look at the vehicle types rather than the codes. They are not all filed the same way, which is the register distinguishing a towed vehicle from one that drives itself — a distinction that matters more to a buyer than the badge does. That table is not an excerpt. It is the entry. Every code the federal register holds under this make is on it, along with the class each one is filed under, the company that registered it, and the month the filing was received. It is worth being explicit about that, because it is not the normal state of affairs in this series. All four are three-character codes. The archived pull behind this series notes that the register also carries six-character identifiers, used where a builder produces in small numbers, and that a raw name query can drag those in from unrelated companies whose names merely contain the string being searched. On this make that does not happen: the name query returns no such strays at all, so the four codes above are the complete set with nothing to filter out.

Here three of the four begin with 1 and one begins with 5, and both of those fall in the range the standard assigns to the United States, which is consistent with the country recorded against every one of them. What the leading character does not do is identify a building, a state or a production line. That is a separate question, and the federal register does not answer it.

## The split that matters: one Trailer, three MPV

Now the part of the entry that is genuinely worth a buyer&rsquo;s attention.

Every world manufacturer identifier is filed under a vehicle type. On this make they do not all share one. Three of the four — 1WV, 1WW and 1WT — are filed as Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle, which most decoders abbreviate to MPV. The fourth, 54C, is filed as Trailer. So a decode run on a number that begins with 54C reports a different federal class from a decode run on a number that begins with 1WT, and both are correct.

That distinction is not cosmetic and it is not a quirk of filing. In the federal scheme, a trailer is a vehicle designed to be drawn by another motor vehicle; a multipurpose passenger vehicle has motive power of its own. One of those is a thing you hitch to something else, and one is a thing you drive. The register writes that difference down in a single column, and on this make the column earns its place.

How unusual is that? We counted before writing it. Across all 56 make entries in the file behind this series, five have their own codes divided between the Trailer class and at least one class covering a self-propelled vehicle. This make is one of the five. That is not a claim about how many kinds of thing any company builds — the register does not carry that — it is a claim about how the codes in this entry are filed, and it is countable from the same file this page is written from.

The practical use of it is direct. If you are looking at a specific unit and you decode its number, the vehicle type field tells you which of those two categories the manufacturer filed the prefix under. That single word changes what the rest of your homework looks like: what has to be titled and registered, what has to be insured and how, what a tow vehicle has to be rated for, what the periodic inspection regime is where you live, and which set of federal standards the thing was built to meet in the first place.

## What &ldquo;Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle&rdquo; means in the regulations

MPV is the class that produces the most puzzled looks, so it is worth taking slowly. It is not an adjective somebody chose to describe the vehicle. It is a category out of the federal motor vehicle safety standards, and it exists because the rules that apply to a vehicle depend on which category it falls into.

The definition turns on construction and capability rather than on marketing. A multipurpose passenger vehicle is a motor vehicle with motive power, designed to carry ten persons or fewer, which is constructed either on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation. A passenger car, by contrast, is designed to carry ten or fewer and is not one of the other defined categories. The test is about how the vehicle is built and what it is engineered to do, and the answer determines which safety standards it has to meet.

Nothing in that definition mentions length, weight, living space, fitted equipment, price, or the word an owner would use in conversation. A vehicle can sit in the multipurpose class and be nothing whatsoever like the mental image the phrase produces. The category is a regulatory bucket. The register writes down which bucket the filing sits in, and stops there.

The consequence follows directly. Run a number that opens with 1WV, 1WW or 1WT through a decoder that reports the register faithfully, and the vehicle type field comes back reading &ldquo;Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle&rdquo;. That is the field answering the question &ldquo;which regulatory category does this manufacturer code sit in?&rdquo; and answering it correctly. It is not answering &ldquo;what would you call this thing?&rdquo;, and it was never built to. Seeing an unfamiliar word there is not evidence of a wrong number, a broken lookup, or a misdescribed vehicle.

The same word turns up across a great range of makes for exactly this reason. Twenty-five of the 56 entries in the file behind this series hold at least one code filed in that class, and they are not remotely similar vehicles. The class is a legal test, not a family resemblance.

## What &ldquo;Trailer&rdquo; means, and why it changes the questions

The fourth code, 54C, is filed under the Trailer class, and the federal definition is about as plain as these definitions get: a trailer is a motor vehicle with or without motive power, designed for carrying persons or property and for being drawn by another motor vehicle. The defining feature is the drawing. Everything else about it — length, number of axles, what is inside — sits outside the definition entirely.

A towed unit still carries a seventeen-character VIN built to the same standard, still opens with a registered manufacturer prefix, and still decodes through the same federal system. What changes is the shape of the rest of the inspection. There is no engine to have its service history reconstructed and no odometer to have its reading questioned, which removes two of the usual anxieties and replaces them with others: the running gear, the coupling and its rating, the frame, the brakes, and above all the weight the thing is rated at against the weight the vehicle in front of it is rated to pull.

That weight question is not answered by any VIN decode. ## Two registered company names hold the four codes

The register records, against every code, the name of the entity that filed for it. On this make there are two such names: WINNEBAGO INDUSTRIES, INC. holds 1WV, 1WW and 1WT, and WINNEBAGO OF INDIANA, LLC holds 54C.

A decode returns that registered name character for character, because reporting the registrant is exactly what the field is for. It is telling you which filed entity is entitled to issue that number. It is not telling you who designed the vehicle, who sold it, who warrants it, or whose name is above the door of the dealership. ## One country against all four codes, and what that field records

All four codes have the United States recorded against them. There is no variation to interpret and no blank to worry about.

What the field records is where the registering entity filed. It is a fact about a filing, not a fact about a production line. A code can be registered by an entity in one country and used on vehicles built somewhere else entirely, and the register neither prevents that nor comments on it. So the correct sentence about this entry is that all four filings sit in the United States — and not that every vehicle carrying one of these prefixes was assembled there, which is a claim the data does not support and which this page therefore does not make.

The practical upshot for a buyer is narrow and worth stating plainly: do not treat the country against a manufacturer code as an assembly location. If where a vehicle was built matters to you, that belongs to the documentation and to the physical certification label on the vehicle, not to this field.

## Four registration dates, in the order the register received them

Each code carries the date its registration was recorded. In order, this entry runs June 2015 for 54C, December 2015 for 1WV, July 2016 for 1WW and February 2017 for 1WT.

Those are registration dates. They are not build dates, they are not model years, and they are not the date anything went on sale. A code has to exist before numbers can be issued under it, so a filing date sets an outer boundary and nothing finer. It does not tell you that vehicles started appearing that month, and it says nothing at all about volumes or about what any company was doing at the time. The register records that a filing was received and when. Everything past that is inference, and this page does not make it.

Reading the dates as an ordering is legitimate and mildly useful. They tell you that the code filed under the Trailer class is the oldest of the four filings, and that the three filed under the multipurpose class were received over the following twenty months. That is a fact about the sequence of filings. It is not a fact about the sequence of vehicles, and the two should not be run together.

## The 24 model names the decoder holds, quoted exactly

Separately from the manufacturer codes, the federal decoder holds a roster of model names for each make. Under this one it holds 24, covering what the decoder knows across all years rather than any current line-up. Because the archived pull behind this page carries the names and not merely the count, they can be printed here exactly as the register spells them:

Two things about that list are worth pointing out, and one thing is worth refusing to do with it. The first is that several entries read as categories rather than as product names — &ldquo;Class C&rdquo;, &ldquo;Incomplete&rdquo;, &ldquo;Recreational Trailer&rdquo;, &ldquo;Walk-in Van&rdquo; and &ldquo;All-Purpose Van&rdquo; all describe a kind of thing rather than naming one. The second is that a few read as internal references rather than as words at all: &ldquo;R00&rdquo; and &ldquo;200&rdquo; are the clear examples.

What we are not going to do is explain them. The register holds the names and does not hold definitions for them, and inventing a gloss for &ldquo;R00&rdquo; would be exactly the kind of confident invention this site tries not to commit. They are printed above because they are what the decoder holds, spelled as it spells them, and that is the whole of the claim being made.

The gap between four codes and 24 model names is itself the point worth taking away. A manufacturer code is a registration; a model name is a catalogue entry. There is no requirement that the two scale together, and on this make they visibly do not. It also matters less than it might appear, because the roster is not the thing a buyer needs. Decoding an actual number returns the model for that specific vehicle, resolved by the federal system from the characters in front of it, and that answer does not depend on any roster being reprinted here.

## No parent entry, and no unrelated matches to filter out

Two administrative points, both of which can be stated flatly.

First, this make registers under its own name. Some makes covered on this site do not: their codes are held by a parent group, and querying the badge alone returns nothing at all, which is a real source of confusion on those pages. That situation does not arise here. Both registered names contain the make name, and there is no parent entry sitting behind them.

Second, a name query against the register returns zero unrelated matches for this make. Because the endpoint matches company names as text, some makes come back with small builders whose names merely contain the same string, and counting those in or filtering them out changes the total the make appears to hold. Here the count of such matches is zero. That is the ordinary outcome rather than anything remarkable — 43 of the 56 entries read for this site return zero, and we counted that before writing it — and it means the four codes above need no filtering.

Taken together, those two facts are why the table on this page can be described as the entry rather than as a view of it. Nothing is held elsewhere under a parent, and nothing has been excluded as noise.

## What the decode does not carry

Everything above concerns what the register holds. This section concerns what it does not, and for anyone about to hand over money it is the more important half.

A VIN decode does not carry service history. It will not tell you when the vehicle was last looked at, what was done, whether it was done by someone competent, or whether anything was skipped. On a self-propelled unit that means the drivetrain history is simply absent; on a towed one it means the bearings, brakes and coupling are equally absent.

A decode does not carry condition. It resolves what the vehicle was specified as when the number was assigned. It says nothing about what has happened since — wear, damage, water ingress, repairs, replacements, or anything fitted, removed or swapped afterwards. A number is a fixed record of an origin, not a live description of an object.

A decode does not tell you that a recall was carried out. It is worth separating these two, because the recall lookup and the VIN decode feel like the same operation. They are not. And a decode does not carry title status, mileage history, or the record of what has been reported against the vehicle over its life. Those live in different systems and have to be asked separately. ## Using all of this on a specific unit

Put together, the sensible sequence on an individual vehicle is short.

Start by checking that the number on the vehicle matches the number on the paperwork, in every character, on every document. On a towed unit that means finding the plate or stamping as well as the paperwork copy, because the two are easier to leave uncompared than they are on a car.

Then decode the number and read the result for what it is. The prefix will resolve to one of the four codes above and return a registered company name and a federal vehicle class. Expect the company name to be a filed entity rather than the badge. Expect the vehicle class to be a regulatory word, possibly one you would never use yourself — and note which of the two classes it is, because that determines everything that follows.

Then read the certification label on the vehicle. On a towed unit the weight ratings on that label are the numbers that decide whether the combination is legal and safe behind whatever you intend to pull it with. On a self-propelled one the label still carries the ratings and the build date, and both are worth having in front of you.

Then check the model year character against the advert, run the recall lookup, and run the title check. Those three take a few minutes between them and they address the questions that actually decide whether something is worth pursuing.

Finally, treat everything the decode cannot reach as a documentation problem rather than a data problem. Service records, evidence that recall work was done, and an inspection by somebody who knows this kind of vehicle are what fill the gap.

## If you are the one selling

The same material is useful from the other side of the transaction. A buyer who runs a decode and gets back a registered company name they were not expecting, or a vehicle class that reads oddly, may well arrive with a question that sounds like an accusation.

The answer is the one this page has been making throughout: the register records a registrant and a federal classification, and neither is a description of the vehicle. Being able to say that calmly, and to point at the entry it comes from, tends to close the question rather than open it. Having the certification label details and the paperwork to hand does the same job. A seller who understands their own documentation is a seller who looks worth dealing with, which is a useful impression to have established before the price comes up.
