# Yamaha VIN Decoder: A Register With No Cars In It

## The short version

Everything filed under the name is a motorcycle or an off-road machine. That makes the register unusually easy to read, and it changes which parts of a decode you should trust.

Yamaha holds 10 world manufacturer identifiers in NHTSA’s register, covering 3 countries of manufacture, against 271 models the decoder holds for the make. A WMI is registered by a corporate entity rather than by a brand, so the count reflects how the group organises its registrations rather than how many vehicles it builds — which is why some familiar names return only one.

## The decoder is not make-specific

NHTSA operates vPIC, manufacturers submit to it as part of safety certification, and it decodes every VIN free of charge regardless of badge. A Yamaha goes in through the same endpoint as a Ford.

## The 10 codes filed under the name

A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose: the World Manufacturer Identifier, assigned centrally and published in full. Under Yamaha there are 10 entries, a modest set next to the 45 a name like Honda holds — though Honda is registering cars, trucks and motorcycles under one badge, and Yamaha is not.

The familiar ones are JYA and JY4 out of Japan and 5Y4 from the United States. Then there are RKR and LPR from Taiwan, and MH3, VG5, 9C6 and LBP filling out the rest.

Taiwan is the entry that catches people. Yamaha Motor Taiwan is a registrant in its own right, so a machine that decodes as a Yamaha may carry a country of manufacture that has nothing to do with Japan. The badge does not tell you; the first three characters do.

## Two vehicle types, neither of them a car

vPIC recognises nine vehicle types and returns two for Yamaha: Motorcycle and Off-Road Vehicle. Passenger Car does not appear, and neither does Truck or Multipurpose Passenger Vehicle.

This is worth stating because it resolves a whole class of confused searches. If a lookup returns a Yamaha car, something has gone wrong upstream — a mistyped VIN, or a site inferring a result rather than reading one.

It also sets expectations for the decode itself. Every field written for cars is irrelevant here, and the fields that matter are the ones covering displacement, cylinders, body class and vehicle type.

## One code for everything off-road

Exactly 1 of the 10 codes is registered as Off-Road Vehicle: JYE, held by Yamaha Motor Co. and filed in 2022.

That is a recent addition to a register whose motorcycle entries mostly date back years earlier, and it explains something people notice when decoding side-by-sides and quads: plenty of off-road machines carry a code registered under Motorcycle instead. The classification in the register reflects how a manufacturer filed at the time, not a judgement about what the machine is.

## The entry that is not Yamaha at all

One further row comes back that is not among the 10. It is 1Z9782, filed in 2025, vehicle type Trailer, and it runs to six characters rather than three — the longer form used for low-volume registrants. Its holder is a company called Old School Yamaha Trailers.

A name search matches any company whose name contains the word, and this one does. That is a small thing with a useful lesson attached: a make-based query returns registrants, not products, and the two are not the same list. The three registrants behind the 10 genuine codes are all Yamaha motor companies. The trailer builder is not one of them, and counting it would have inflated the set.

Read manufacturer-level data as a register of filings rather than a catalogue of machines, and results like this stop being confusing.

## What comes back, and what comes back empty

Identification is the strong half. Make, model, model year, vehicle type, body class, engine displacement and cylinder count are well populated on modern machines, and vPIC holds 271 models under the name to match against.

The motorcycle-specific variables are the weak half. vPIC publishes fields for chassis type, suspension type, fuel-tank detail, custom type, combined braking and wheelie mitigation, and manufacturers frequently submit none of them, because certification does not require it.

## The machine as it left the factory

The decode describes the vehicle as certified and is never updated afterwards. On a motorcycle that gap is usually wider than on a car.

Exhausts, fuelling, bodywork, suspension internals, sprockets and bar-mounted everything are all routinely changed, and none of it appears in any federal record. A machine rebuilt from two others decodes as whichever one supplied the frame.

That is the practical reason to read the frame number yourself rather than trusting a printout. Check it character by character against the title, photograph it rather than transcribing it, and treat a stamping that looks re-struck, ground or filled as the most serious thing you can find on a used machine.

## The checks that decide it

Specification confirms a listing is honest about what the machine is. The records that decide whether to buy it are separate, and all keyed to the same VIN.

Theft matters disproportionately here, because motorcycles and off-road machines are stolen at high rates, moved easily and recovered rarely. A written-off and rebuilt machine carries a title brand exactly as a car does, and the brand stays with the number rather than the owner. Safety recalls are free to have carried out at a franchised dealer and are commonly outstanding on used machines, since the notice went to whoever was registered at the time.
