# When to Buy

> Pick the month you plan to buy and see what that month typically does to used-car prices, from 259 months of federal price-index data: the median move, how often it fell, and the softest stretch of the year.

## What this tool does

Pick the month you plan to buy and the page shows what that month typically does to used-car prices, drawn from the BLS used-vehicles consumer price index: the median month-over-month move for each calendar month, and in how many of the observed years that month actually fell. Two views: the typical year with the 2020–2022 shock years excluded, and the full record including them.

## What the data says

The pattern is seasonal and consistent: prices typically firm through spring, then ease through autumn into winter — and the two views agree on which months sit at each end. The tool names the softest and firmest months from the data rather than repeating the folklore.

## Limits worth knowing

This is a national price index, not a listing average — it describes the market's typical year, not any one car's price. Seasonality is a tendency across many observed years, not a promise about the next one, and a well-bought car in a firm month beats a badly bought one in a soft month. The specific car's record still decides more than the calendar does.
