# Years to Avoid

> Pick a model and see every year measured against its neighbours in NHTSA owner-complaint data: which years stand out, which run quiet, and by how much. A measurement, not a rumour.

## What this tool does

Pick a model and the page charts NHTSA owner complaints for every model year on record, flags the years that stand out from their neighbours and the years that run quiet, and shows the standout ratio — how many times the surrounding years' complaint volume that year drew. Each model links to its full year-by-year index article.

## How the measurement works

Raw complaint totals measure how long a car has been on the road at least as much as they measure anything else, so no year is ranked on its raw count. Each year is divided by the median of the two years before and the two after it; a year is flagged only when it rises well above that local baseline. The counts come from an archived NHTSA pull, and the retrieval date is printed on the page.

## Limits worth knowing

A complaint is one owner reporting a problem, not a measured failure rate, and a standout year is a flag to check one specific car harder — its recalls, its title, its VIN — not a verdict on every car built that year.
