Free VIN Validator

The one VIN check that needs no database.

Position 9 of every VIN is arithmetic, fixed by federal rule 49 CFR 565.15. Type a number and this page verifies it instantly in your browser — and shows the worked math, position by position, so you can see why it passes or fails.

  • Runs entirely in your browser
  • Nothing sent anywhere
  • Catches one-character typos

The verdict appears the moment the 17th character lands0/17

Validation itself contacts no server and keeps nothing. To decode what the number says, use the VIN Check tool; the full history report is provided by our vehicle-history partner.

Arithmetic, not records

The check digit is computed from the other sixteen characters under a fixed federal formula. Verifying it needs no database — which is why this page never contacts one.

What failure means

A failing digit almost always means one mistyped character — a 1 read as an I, a 0 as an O. A number that genuinely fails cannot be a real VIN, and a listing built on one deserves a question.

What passing does not mean

Valid means well-formed, nothing more. Whether the vehicle exists and what it is are the VIN Check tool’s job; what happened to it afterwards is a records question.
