In the file the clunk appears in 9.6% of ball-joint reports and 9.2% of the control: essentially identical. That matters because it means you cannot identify a ball joint by the noise alone; a clunk tells you something in the suspension is worn, not which part. Loose or wandering steering (8.4%) is a similar, non-specific warning. A mechanic checks a ball joint by feeling for play with the wheel raised — a worn one has perceptible movement it should not have — and worn ball joints are also flagged during any alignment or tire job, so they are cheap to catch during routine work. Do not defer a ball joint that has been called out with play: it is inexpensive to replace and catastrophic to ignore. If the clunk turns out to be a wheel bearing or a worn strut instead, those are less urgent, but the inspection is what tells them apart.
On a used car you are about to buy
Front-end wear is easy to feel and easy to overlook. On the test drive, listen over bumps and through low-speed turns with the radio off, and feel for wandering or loose steering. Better still, have a mechanic check the ball joints for play as part of a pre-purchase inspection — it takes minutes and finds exactly this.
