Decode the year, model, trim, plant and engine, then check NMVTIS for title brands and NHTSA for open recalls. The repair does not show on the paint. It shows in the record.
Class against class
The stars compare vehicles of similar size and weight. Five on a small car and five on a heavy SUV are not the same protection — physics did not sign up to the rating scale.
The 2011 line
The test program was toughened for 2011-model-year vehicles. Stars from either side of that line do not compare, and a shiny old five can mean less than a newer four.
Unrated is not unsafe
NHTSA crashes a sample of high-volume vehicles, so plenty of real models carry no stars. The honest reading is “untested” — and the complaint record still speaks either way.
