The ABS light is the obvious symptom — it appears in 55% of module reports against 5.7% of the control — but on its own it is just “the ABS light is on.” The more diagnostic finding is the second row of the chart: other warning lights come on with it in 39.1% of module reports, against 10.3% of the control. That is because the ABS module is not just an anti-lock computer; it runs traction control and electronic stability control from the same unit, so when the module fails, the ABS, traction and stability lights tend to come on together. A single cluster of related lights — ABS plus traction plus stability — points much harder at the module than any one light alone.
You keep your normal brakes
This is the reassurance the data supports, and it matters because the fear is worse than the fault. With a failed ABS module you lose the anti-lock function — in a hard, panic stop the wheels can lock and skid where the ABS would have pulsed them — but you keep ordinary hydraulic braking. The file bears this out: a crash or near-miss appears in 12.9% of module reports against 21.2% of the control, and complete brake failure in just 4.9% against 11.7%, both below the control. In other words, ABS-module complaints involve less total brake loss than brake complaints in general. What to do when you suspect it
Scan for codes first, because the module logs them. On a used car you are about to buy
An ABS or traction-control light is easy to clear before a sale and will return once the car has driven a short distance. Scan for stored and pending chassis codes rather than trusting a dark dashboard, and treat a cluster of ABS, traction and stability lights as a module suspect, not a loose connection to shrug off.
