The brake booster is the part that multiplies the force of your foot using engine vacuum, so a healthy car stops with a light pedal and a failing booster makes you push much harder. That is the theory; the federal complaint file tells a more tangled story. We took a brake-complaint pull and reduced it to the 391 reports that name a booster, set against 5,546 other brake complaints from the same cars, and the result splits cleanly in two: the booster’s genuine signature, and a single truck’s recall that has coloured the whole record.

The difference between the bars is the finding. The booster's own signature is loss of vacuum assist — a hard or stiff pedal (13.3 per cent against 7.4) and a hiss (10.5 against 2.5, over four times the control). The pedal-to-the-floor that leads at 20.2 per cent is mostly a different fault wearing the booster's name, covered in the next figure. A warning light (24.3 against 23.2) and a crash (16.4 against 20.5) run level or below, so neither points at the booster specifically. Counts of words owners filed, not failure rates. The booster’s own signature: a hard pedal and a hiss

What a failing booster actually does is stop assisting, and you feel that immediately as a pedal that has gone hard and stiff — you press, and it barely moves, and the car does not slow the way your foot expects. That hard pedal appears in 13.3% of booster reports against 7.4% of the control, and a hiss — the sound of a vacuum diaphragm or line leaking — in 10.5% against 2.5%, more than four times as often. Those two are the booster’s fingerprint, because they are what lost vacuum assist feels and sounds like. If your brake pedal has suddenly become hard to push, especially with a hiss when you press it, the booster or its vacuum supply is the first suspect.

The loudest symptom that isn’t the booster’s fault

The most common symptom in the file is the opposite of a hard pedal: a pedal sinking to the floor, in 20.2% of booster reports against just 4% of the control. That is strange for a booster — a sinking pedal is a hydraulic symptom, the master cylinder’s territory — until you see what is behind it.

196 of the 391 booster reports — half of them — are Ford F-150s, the subject of a recall in which the brake master cylinder leaks fluid into the booster, contaminating it and dropping the pedal. So the file’s loudest “booster” symptom is really a master-cylinder leak that ruined the booster, on one heavily-sold truck. It is a genuine booster failure — but a downstream one, and one covered by a campaign. That is why the record is worth checking before you pay: run the VIN through the recall lookup and read the model’s complaint history, because a repair the manufacturer owns is a different thing from one you fund yourself.

What a warning light and a crash don’t tell you

Two things people expect to be meaningful are not. A brake or dashboard warning light appears in 24.3% of booster reports and 23.2% of the control — essentially level, so it is a sign of brake trouble in general, not of the booster. And a crash or near-miss shows up in 16.4% of booster reports against 20.5% of the control, actually lower — a failing booster makes stopping harder, but the file does not show it causing more crashes than other brake faults. Read the light and the fright as “something is wrong with the brakes,” and use the hard pedal and the hiss to say it is the booster.

What to do when you suspect it

There is a simple test for vacuum assist. With the engine off, pump the brake pedal several times to bleed off the stored vacuum, then hold the pedal down and start the engine: on a good booster the pedal will sink slightly as vacuum returns and takes over. If it does not move — if the pedal stays hard — the booster or its vacuum supply is not doing its job. Check the vacuum hose and check valve first, since a cheap leak there mimics a dead booster, and listen for the hiss that localises it. Booster or master cylinder?

The two are easy to tell apart by the pedal, and they are opposites. A bad booster gives a hard pedal — you cannot push it, because the assist is gone. A bad master cylinder gives a sinking pedal — it drifts to the floor under steady pressure, because the hydraulics cannot hold. On a used car you are about to buy

Brakes are the one system where a fault is a safety issue on the test drive, not just a repair bill. Press the pedal firmly at a stop before you set off: it should be firm but not rock-hard, and should not sink. A hard pedal with a hiss points at the booster; a sinking pedal at the master cylinder. Either way, check the model and year in the complaint lookup and its open recalls — brake boosters and master cylinders are exactly the kind of part that carries campaigns, and a seller will not raise one.
