Symptoms of a Bad Knock Sensor: What 439 Reports Show

The knock sensor is a microphone bolted to the engine that listens for the metallic rattle of detonation, so the computer can pull timing before knock damages anything. When the sensor fails, two things happen: a code, and a loss of power, because a computer that cannot hear the engine assumes the worst and retards the timing to protect it. We pulled the federal complaint file, took the 439 reports that name a knock sensor against 43,699 other engine complaints — and found a data set with an important twist.

A code, and a quiet loss of power

The knock sensor speaks in a check-engine light more than almost any part: 63.8% of its reports mention one, against 26.7% of the control, usually a knock-sensor circuit code in the P0325–P0332 range. The symptom you feel is reduced power, in 30.5% against 8.8% — more than three times as often — because when the ignition system loses a trustworthy knock signal, the safe default is to retard the timing, and retarded timing means less power and often worse fuel economy. The twist: this file is a recall

Here is the context that changes how to read the numbers. Of the 439 reports, 409 — 93% — are Hyundai and Kia models: the Optima, Sonata and Soul. Those are the Theta II engines at the centre of a major recall, and the “knock sensor” in question was often added by that recall: a knock-sensor detection system whose job is to sense the early rattle of a failing engine bearing and put the car into a reduced-power, limp-home state before the engine seizes. So a large share of the reduced power in this data is not a broken sensor at all — it is the recall system doing exactly what it was installed to do, catching an engine that is failing internally. If you own one of those cars and it drops into reduced power with a knock-sensor warning, the sensor may be fine and the engine may be the problem, which makes checking the recall and the complaint history the first move, not replacing a sensor.

What to do when you suspect it

Read the code and check the recall before you touch the sensor. A genuine knock-sensor circuit fault (P0325/P0330) on an engine outside the recall points at the sensor or its wiring, and it is a modest repair that restores full timing and power. But on a Hyundai or Kia Theta II engine, a knock-sensor warning with reduced power may be the detection system flagging a failing engine — a completely different and far more serious situation that the recall may cover. The reduced power is deliberate in that case, and replacing the sensor would defeat a safety system. Given the concentration in this file, checking the VIN against the recall is not optional.

On a used car you are about to buy

On a Hyundai or Kia of the affected years especially, a knock-sensor code or a history of reduced-power episodes deserves real caution — it can indicate an engine already flagged as failing. Scan for stored codes, ask about any reduced-power events, and check the model and year in the complaint lookup and its open recalls. On other makes a knock-sensor code is a minor repair; on those engines it can be the warning of a much larger bill.
