The oxygen sensor is the part that tells the engine computer whether the fuel mixture is right, and when it goes lazy it throws codes that sound far more expensive than the sensor itself. Every symptom list repeats the same bullets from memory; we went instead to the federal complaint file, took 165,897 owner complaints across 30 model lines and model years 2010 to 2020, and reduced them to the 334 that name an oxygen sensor. The check-engine light is the whole point
An oxygen-sensor complaint is, more than almost any other, a check-engine-light complaint: the light appears in 59.3% of them against 27.4% of the control. That is not a coincidence but a definition — the sensor’s only job is to report the exhaust mixture to the computer, so when it drifts or dies, the computer notices and lights the dash. What the light does not do is tell you the sensor is the culprit, because the same light covers a hundred faults. The finding that matters: it is the converter’s cheaper twin
Here is the pattern the memory-lists miss. A third of oxygen-sensor reports — 32% — also name the catalytic converter, against just 2.9% of the control. More than ten times as often, the two parts appear in the same breath, and the reason is a single code: P0420, “catalyst efficiency below threshold.” The computer infers that code from the oxygen sensors, so a lazy sensor throws the exact code that gets a converter condemned — and the sensor is a small fraction of the converter’s price.

The mixture symptoms, read with care
Beyond the light, the symptoms that separate an oxygen sensor from general engine trouble are the ones you would predict from a sensor that has stopped trimming the fuel mixture: worse fuel economy (1.8% against 0.7%) and a failed emissions test (1.5% against 0.3%). Proportionally these are the most distinctive rows in the file — a car burning more fuel and failing a smog check is exactly what a bad sensor produces. But each rests on a small number of accounts in a set of 334, so treat them as consistent with the mechanism rather than as precise rates. Stalling appears in a quarter of the reports (25.7%) but runs only modestly above the control; hesitation and a tow run close to it. The strong, dependable signals here are the check-engine light and the converter connection; the rest is supporting detail.
What to do when you suspect it
Start with the code, not the part. Pull the trouble code rather than reacting to the light alone; a specific oxygen-sensor code (the P013x and P014x family) points at the sensor or its circuit, while a P0420 points at the sensor or the converter and needs the sensor ruled out first. A good shop can test whether the sensor is switching properly, which settles it cheaply. If the sensor is the fault, it is an inexpensive fix that also protects the converter downstream; if it checks out, you have spent very little before looking further. What you should not do is authorise a catalytic converter on a P0420 without that test — the file shows how often the two are entangled.
On a used car you are about to buy
A cleared check-engine light is the oldest trick at a private sale, and an oxygen-sensor or emissions fault is a common thing to clear the morning of a viewing. Scan for stored and pending codes rather than trusting a dark dashboard, and be wary of a car sold as “needs emissions work.” Because oxygen-sensor faults tangle with the converter, it is worth checking the model and year in the complaint lookup and its open recalls before you buy — a pattern of converter and sensor reports is exactly what the federal file records and what a seller will not mention.
