A power-steering pump is the belt-driven hydraulic pump that pressurises fluid to help you turn the wheel, especially at low speed. It is a wear part with seals and a reservoir, and its decline follows a recognisable path from the first whine to the day the steering goes heavy. We pulled the federal complaint file, took the 197 reports that name the power-steering pump against 18,607 other steering complaints, and the data shows a pump gives you clear, specific warning.
The whine and the leak give it away
Two symptoms separate the pump from steering trouble in general. The first is a fluid leak — 19.3% of pump reports against just 1% of the control, nineteen times as often — because a hydraulic pump and its high-pressure hoses and reservoir are the wettest part of the steering system, and their seals harden and weep with age and heat. The second is the sound: a whine, groan or moan that rises and falls as you turn the wheel, in 17.3% against 3.4%, five times as often. That noise is the pump straining, usually because the fluid is low or aerated. A whine that tracks your steering, or a pink or amber puddle under the front of the car, is a pump until proven otherwise.
Then the steering goes hard
As the pump loses its ability to build pressure — or runs dry from the leak it has been dripping — the assist fades and the steering turns heavy, in 25.4% of reports against 15% of the control. It is hardest to feel at parking speed, where you rely on the assist most, and it may come and go before it becomes constant. Reassuringly, an outright crash is rare here (the pump-related loss of assist leaves the car harder to steer, not uncontrollable at speed), which is why the whine and the leak are worth acting on: they are the warning before the effort arrives.
What to do when you suspect it
Start with the fluid, because it is cheap and it is the cause of most of these symptoms. Check the power-steering reservoir level and condition: low or foamy fluid makes the pump whine and can be the whole problem, and topping it up while you investigate a leak may quiet it. Trace a leak to its source — the pump seals, a hose, or the reservoir — before the level drops far enough to damage the pump running dry. If the fluid is full and clean but the pump still whines or the steering is heavy, the pump itself is worn and due for replacement. Because the belt drives the pump, a slipping or glazed belt can also cause a whine, so that is worth checking at the same time.
Hydraulic pump or electric steering?
Before assuming a pump, confirm your car even has one. Many vehicles from the 2010s on use electric power steering, with a motor on the column or rack and no hydraulic pump, fluid or reservoir at all. On a used car you are about to buy
A tired pump is easy to catch. On the test drive, turn the wheel fully both ways at low speed with the radio off and listen for a whine or groan, and feel whether the steering is heavier than it should be. Before you buy, open the hood and check the power-steering fluid level and colour, and look for weeping around the pump and hoses and a puddle under the front of the car. A pump caught while it is only whining or seeping is a modest repair; one run dry is a larger one. Checking the model and year in the complaint lookup is worth the two minutes.
