The warning light is the signature
The single most distinctive symptom is a warning light or dashboard message — 36.5% of EPS reports against 15.9% of the control, more than twice as often. An EPS system watches itself: when the module detects a fault in the motor, the torque sensor, the wiring, or its own electronics, it lights a steering warning (often a wheel-and-exclamation symbol or a “service power steering” message) and frequently reduces or cuts the assist to a safe state. That light is the earliest and clearest sign, and unlike the hydraulic system’s whine, it is a specific, logged event rather than a noise you have to interpret.
Then the assist cuts out
The consequence is the second symptom: hard, heavy steering or lost assist, in 25.1% of reports against 13.2% of the control. When the module drops the assist, the steering does not fail — you can still turn the wheel — but it suddenly takes far more effort, because you are now moving the rack by hand. It is manageable at speed, where less assist is needed, and hardest at parking speed, where a sudden loss can catch a driver off guard. On a used car you are about to buy
