The radiator is where the engine’s heat is finally shed to the air, so when it fails, the engine has nowhere to put its heat and the temperature climbs. It is also the cooling part that most often fails where you can see it — a cracked plastic tank, a corroded core, a puddle of coolant under the front of the car. We reused a cooling-system pull and took the 126 reports that name a radiator against 4,024 other cooling complaints. The signature: overheating

Whether the radiator is leaking coolant away, clogged internally, or cracked, the result is the same — it can no longer move enough heat to the air, and the gauge climbs. As with the water pump, the temperature gauge is the instrument that catches it, and a climbing gauge is the warning to act on before the engine is damaged.
How to tell it’s the radiator: it fails where you can see it
Overheating alone does not name the part — a water pump or thermostat overheats a car too. What points specifically at the radiator is that it fails visibly. A visible leak or puddle appears in 8.7% of radiator reports against 2.3% of the control, and a cracked or damaged radiator in 8.7% against 4.2% — both well above the control, because radiators crack at their plastic end tanks and split their cores, leaving coolant on the ground and damage you can point to. The generic “coolant leak” mention is level with the control, but the visible puddle and the cracked core are radiator tells. If you have overheating and a puddle of coolant under the front of the car, the radiator is the first place to look.
Radiator, water pump or thermostat?
All three are cooling parts and all three end in overheating, which is why they are so often confused. The rough division: a radiator tends to leak visibly and crack; a water pump overheats the car with less of a visible leak and can weep from its own shaft; and a thermostat stuck shut causes overheating that comes and goes with driving conditions. The honest truth is that telling them apart reliably needs a cooling-system pressure test, which finds where the coolant is going — but a puddle under the radiator and a cracked tank are as close to a visible verdict as the cooling system offers.
What to do when you suspect it
Treat overheating as a stop-driving event — 15.9% of these reports describe engine damage from it, and that is where the real cost lies. On a used car you are about to buy
Look under the front of the car for coolant residue and check the radiator’s plastic tanks for cracks or staining, and run the temperature gauge through a longer test drive rather than a cold few minutes. Evidence of past overheating — a recently replaced radiator, coolant residue, a suspiciously fresh engine bay — is worth asking about. Checking the model and year in the complaint lookup is worth it, since some models have known radiator or overheating patterns a seller will not raise.
