The signature: a leak

That leak is the single most distinctive symptom in the file: 11.7% of strut reports mention a leaking or oily strut against just 0.3% of the control — nearly forty times as common. A wet, oily film down the body of a strut is close to a diagnosis on its own, because almost nothing else in the suspension leaks that way. What to do when you suspect it
Look for the leak first — it is the cheapest, clearest test. With the car raised or by looking behind the wheel, check the strut bodies for a wet, oily film; a leaking strut is a worn strut. The classic bounce test (push down hard on a corner and let go; it should settle in one rebound, not keep bouncing) still has some value, but a visible leak is more reliable.
