On a modern car the throttle body is electronic: there is no cable from the pedal, just a sensor telling the computer how far you pressed and a motor opening the throttle to match. That changes how it fails. Where an old cable throttle body got dirty and idled roughly, a modern one loses its signal and the car protects itself. We pulled the federal complaint file, took the 402 reports that name a throttle body against 43,353 other engine complaints, and the data shows that modern failure mode plainly.

A check-engine or reduced-power light leads at 52.2 per cent, and stalling follows, but the category that truly separates a throttle body is limp mode / reduced power: 26.4 per cent against 5.2, more than five times the control. That is the modern electronic throttle body's failure mode — when it loses the pedal-to-throttle signal, the computer drops the engine into a protective reduced-power state rather than letting it run rough. The modern signature: limp mode

The symptom that most separates a throttle body from any other engine fault is limp mode — reduced power — in 26.4% of throttle-body reports against 5.2% of the control, more than five times as often. When the computer cannot trust the throttle position or the pedal signal, it will not let the engine make full power; it drops into a limp-home state, often with a dedicated “reduced power” warning, so you can crawl off the road but not accelerate normally. That is the electronic throttle body’s calling card. A car that suddenly loses power and puts a reduced-power light on the dash, rather than one that merely idles rough, is pointing at the throttle body or its pedal sensor.

Stalling, and the rough idle that mostly isn’t there

Stalling is the next most common symptom, in 29.6% of reports against 18.4% of the control — a throttle body that cannot hold the right idle opening lets the engine die, especially coming to a stop. But notice what is not prominent: the rough, high or erratic idle that every symptom list leads with appears in just 2.7% of the reports. On a modern electronic throttle body a fault more often trips the reduced-power protection than produces the wandering idle of a dirty cable-era unit. The rough idle still happens — a genuinely dirty throttle body can cause it — but in the complaint file it is the exception, and limp mode is the rule.

What to do when you suspect it

Read the code first: a throttle or pedal-position fault typically stores a P0120–P0124 or a P2135, and a reduced-power light with one of those points hard at the throttle body or its pedal sensor. Before replacing an electronic throttle body — an expensive part — a cleaning is worth trying if the symptom is a rough or high idle rather than limp mode, and the wiring and connector deserve a look, since a poor connection mimics a failed unit. Many electronic throttle bodies also need a relearn procedure after cleaning or replacement, so an idle that is wrong right after the work is often just that step missing. On a used car you are about to buy

A reduced-power episode is easy to miss on a short test drive and alarming when it happens at speed. Drive the car through a firm acceleration and watch for hesitation or a power cap, and scan for stored and pending codes rather than trusting a dark dashboard. Because throttle-body faults cluster on particular models, check the model and year in the complaint lookup and its open recalls — a limp-mode pattern on that model year is exactly what the federal file records.
