Cadillac Extended Warranty: Who Owes the Repair and When It Starts

Cadillac publishes its Protection Plan contract, so it can be read. GM Protections, LLC owes the repair and Safe-Guard decides claims, a Wrap plan ends with the 6-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty, and only Platinum covers the radiator and wiring. Where the brochure, FAQ and two contract editions disagree.

The short version

  • The Cadillac extended warranty is the Cadillac Protection Plan, a vehicle service contract. Cadillac calls it the only plan backed by Cadillac, but the contract makes GM Protections, LLC the company that owes your repair, with Safe-Guard Products International, LLC deciding claims. In California, cadillac.com and the newest contract name Safe-Guard as the obligor.
  • Powertrain and Silver cover only the parts their lists name; Platinum covers any mechanical breakdown except its exclusions. The plan page prints terms up to 96 months or 120,000 miles for Powertrain and 96 months or 100,000 miles for Silver and Platinum. No Cadillac document prints a price.
  • Without the Wrap option a plan starts the day you buy it. With Wrap it starts at the car’s in-service date and zero miles. A Cadillac sell sheet puts Wrap terms at 72 months/70,000 miles, the factory powertrain warranty’s own end points.
  • A 2026 Cadillac has 4 years or 50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper and 6 years or 70,000 miles on the powertrain. Of the parts the powertrain warranty leaves out, Silver adds the starter and heater core, only Platinum the radiator and wiring, and no level the coolant hoses.
  • Cadillac’s documents disagree on what Silver covers, the longest term, how late you can buy and repair costs: cadillac.com and the plan’s customer site cite the same claims data and print $10,747 and $16,213 for an engine.
  • The May 2023 contract cadillac.com links is word for word the GMC contract our GM page read, apart from the brand name, a phone number and a web address. An April 2026 edition changes the California obligor, excludes hybrid batteries under Platinum and drops wear and tear from its definition of a breakdown.

Cadillac’s extended warranty is a vehicle service contract sold as the Cadillac Protection Plan, in Powertrain, Silver and Platinum levels, through Cadillac dealers and online. It isn’t the factory warranty: it is a separate purchase with its own contract, obligor and refund rules, and electric Cadillacs get a different plan. This page reads Cadillac’s own documents, all on 30 September 2026: the cadillac.com plan pages, FAQ and footnotes, the May 2023 sample contract cadillac.com links, the January 2026 brochures, a May 2023 sell sheet, the EV Protection Plan contract, the 2025 and 2026 Cadillac warranty booklets, and an April 2026 edition of the contract linked from the plan’s customer site.

The April 2026 edition gives the same answers. The matching of wording is ours; the contract you sign governs.

Who owes you the repair: GM Protections, LLC, and Safe-Guard

Cadillac sells the plan on its own name. The plan page is headed “The only Protection Plan backed by Cadillac”, and the FAQ calls it “the only coverage endorsed by Cadillac and backed by General Motors.” The contract names a different company.

The sample contract cadillac.com links, form CAVSC 5/23, puts the obligations on GM Protections, LLC, the service contract provider or obligor: the company bound to pay your claim. The administrator, which takes the claim call and authorizes repairs, is Safe-Guard Products International, LLC, or Safe-Guard Warranty Corporation in Florida. cadillac.com’s footnotes, the January 2026 brochure and Cadillac Financial’s page name the same companies. No Cadillac contract we read says how GM Protections, LLC relates to General Motors. In the May 2023 sample, “GM” appears only inside the obligor’s name and “General Motors” not at all.

California is different, and the documents disagree about how. The May 2023 sample keeps GM Protections, LLC there, with its California licence number printed as “[TBD]”. cadillac.com’s own footnote, Cadillac Financial and the April 2026 contract say the California obligor is Safe-Guard Products International, LLC. In Massachusetts the obligor is the selling dealer, and the contract warns that the plan’s benefits may duplicate warranties that come with every sale.

Whether an insurer stands behind the obligor depends on where you live. In 27 jurisdictions, 26 states plus the District of Columbia, the obligations are fully insured by a reimbursement policy from Virginia Surety Company, Inc., and you can claim from it directly if a covered claim or refund goes unpaid for 60 days (30 in Alaska). The list includes California, Illinois, New York and Texas, but not Florida, Georgia, Michigan or Ohio. Elsewhere the obligations rest on the obligor’s full faith and credit alone. Our guide to who actually owes you the repair explains why that matters. The contract also says it is “not an insurance policy, a warranty, or a guarantee,” that buying it is optional and can’t be a condition of credit, and cadillac.com adds that it isn’t sold in every state or for every model.

Two editions of the contract, and how to tell which you’re signing

The cadillac.com sample runs to 16 pages, is stamped SAMPLE throughout, and leaves the term, price and deductible blank. We compared it sentence by sentence with the GMC sample of the same date, which our GM extended warranty page walks through. Apart from 12 passages they are the same document, and in each of those the only change is the brand name or form code (8 changes), the administrator’s telephone number (7) or the web address of the electronic copy (1).

A newer edition exists. mycadillacprotection.com, the site cadillac.com’s FAQ sends existing customers to, links its “Customer Agreement” to a 17-page contract headed Cadillac Protection Plan, form GMPVSC 4/26. Its rental, roadside, transfer-fee and default-deductible terms and its insured-state list are unchanged. These are not:

Where the April 2026 edition of the Cadillac Protection Plan contract differs from the May 2023 sample cadillac.com links. Both read on 30 September 2026.

cadillac.com’s footnote already names Safe-Guard for California, and the January 2026 brochure already excludes hybrid batteries, as the April 2026 edition does. That suggests the cadillac.com sample is out of date, though the reading is ours. The form number is printed at the top of the registration page, so check which edition you are signing and read these clauses in it.

Powertrain, Silver and Platinum: what each level lists

The three levels as the May 2023 sample contract defines them, with the longest terms the cadillac.com plan page prints. Read on 30 September 2026.
LevelGroups the contract listsHow coverage worksLongest term
PowertrainEngine; transmission, transaxle and transfer case; drive axle; hybrid and electric componentsListed parts only; an unlisted part isn’t covered even if a covered part damaged it96 months or 120,000 miles
SilverPowertrain, plus front and rear suspension, climate control, electrical, steering and brakesListed parts only96 months or 100,000 miles
PlatinumPowertrain and Silver, plus any other mechanical breakdownEverything except listed exclusions, including damage a covered part causes to an uncovered one96 months or 100,000 miles

On the plan page, Platinum adds audio, navigation, parking assist, the video screen and adaptive cruise control, and its footnote lists 11 high-tech items in all, including adaptive headlamps, lane departure and collision-avoidance systems. cadillac.com, the brochure and Cadillac Financial all say the plan covers up to 1,500 parts, depending on level. That is the company’s count. The contract doesn’t number its parts.

The January 2026 brochure blurs the upper levels. It says “Platinum and Silver coverage includes all mechanical parts of your vehicle” unless listed as not covered, while its own footnote, and both contracts, say Silver covers only the parts listed. Its parts page also marks the Fuel Systems group, which includes the fuel pump, as Platinum only, though the contract’s Powertrain list names the fuel pump. Read the contract’s lists, not the brochure’s.

Two lines shape every level. Fully electric vehicles aren’t eligible, because they have their own plan. And the May 2023 edition counts wear as a breakdown, covering a part that fails through “a gradual reduction in operating performance as a result of normal wear and tear.” The April 2026 edition drops that wording and requires all scheduled maintenance instead, so the older text covers a part that simply wears out in so many words, and the newer one is silent on it.

What each level adds to the factory powertrain warranty

The clearest test of the levels is the list of parts Cadillac’s own powertrain warranty leaves out. The 2026 booklet excludes from engine coverage the sensors, wiring, connectors, engine radiator, coolant hoses, heater core, starter motor and the whole pressurized fuel system, in-tank fuel pump included, and it excludes transmission cooling hoses and every wheel bearing. Once bumper-to-bumper cover ends at 4 years or 50,000 miles, the powertrain warranty won’t pay for them, though the booklet notes some may still fall under the emissions warranty. In the Protection Plan’s lists:

  • From Powertrain up: the fuel pump, the transmission oil cooler and cooler hose, and wheel bearings (Powertrain lists “front wheel drive axles/halfshafts and wheel bearings” and Silver adds them front and rear).
  • From Silver up: the starter motor, the heater core and named sensors such as oxygen, mass air flow, knock, crank angle and camshaft position.
  • Platinum only: the engine radiator and wiring, which no list names and Platinum doesn’t exclude.
  • No level: radiator and heater hoses, which Platinum excludes by name. Every level also excludes hoses and belts its lists don’t name.

So of these nine gaps, Powertrain closes three, Silver six and Platinum eight. That matching is ours, and the contract’s words govern a dispute, but it shows what the choice between Silver and Platinum comes down to here: the radiator and the wiring.

A tuned engine bay under an open hood: the radiator cap, a braided coolant hose, the timing-belt pulleys, a large intake and the throttle body.Annotated photographThree numbered callouts over the photograph mark the radiator cap, a coolant hose and the wiring at the throttle body, with which Cadillac Protection Plan level covers each.Radiator: outside Cadillac'spowertrain warranty, and onlyPlatinum lists it.1Radiator and heater hoses: Platinumexcludes them too, so no plan levelpays.2Wiring and connectors: outside thepowertrain warranty; only Platinumcovers them.3
Cadillac's 2026 powertrain warranty leaves out the engine radiator, coolant hoses and wiring. In the Cadillac Protection Plan sample contract, only Platinum covers the radiator (callout 1) and wiring and connectors (callout 3), and Platinum excludes radiator and heater hoses by name, so no level pays for them (callout 2). The photograph is illustrative; a throttle-body label has been softened.

What those repairs cost is less clear, because cadillac.com and the plan’s customer site print different averages from what both describe as the administrator’s claims for Cadillac vehicles between October 2022 and July 2024, parts and labor included.

When the clock starts: Wrap, additive terms and the buying window

The registration page has a box for Wrap. Without it, the plan starts on the purchase date at that day’s odometer reading and ends when the months listed pass or the miles listed are added, whichever comes first. With it, the plan runs from the manufacturer’s in-service date and zero miles. Either way you sign that the term includes the factory warranty period and that parts still under factory warranty aren’t covered by the plan until it ends. The years overlap. They don’t add.

A May 2023 sell sheet still served from cadillac.com gives the figures: Wrap terms “are available for 72 months/70,000 miles” from the in-service date, and additive terms “for up to 8 years or 120,000 miles” from the purchase date and odometer. Those Wrap figures are the factory powertrain warranty’s end points, 6 years or 70,000 miles, so a Wrap plan ends when the powertrain warranty does. What it buys is cover, at the level chosen, for the parts the powertrain warranty doesn’t reach once bumper-to-bumper ends. The gap between those end points is 24 months and 20,000 miles, our subtraction: a Cadillac that turns four on low mileage gets up to 24 more months of that cover, and one that reaches 50,000 miles early gets up to 20,000 more miles, not both.

Counting the sell sheet, the longest term is printed four ways. The plan page says Powertrain up to 96 months or 120,000 miles and Silver and Platinum up to 96 months or 100,000. The FAQ says all three run up to 8 years or 100,000 miles, and the January 2026 brochure and the customer site say the same without naming Powertrain. Bought at delivery, a Silver or Platinum plan at the page maximum ends up to 24 months or 30,000 miles past the factory powertrain warranty, and a Powertrain plan up to 24 months or 50,000 miles past it. Those are end points, not what every car gets, and the arithmetic is ours. The FAQ’s own summary, that the term “begins on your contract purchase date and mileage”, leaves Wrap out entirely, so ask the dealer to print the plan’s actual end date and mileage on the quote.

How late you can buy is printed three ways too. The FAQ says after the sale only if the car is still within its factory limited warranty “by at least 1,000 miles or 30 days prior to expiration.” The overview page says “at any time up to 8 years or 100,000 miles.” The contract expects later sales: bought after the car and after the factory warranty has ended, a plan covers nothing for the first 30 days or 1,000 miles, and the same is added to its end. Section 3.A of the May 2023 edition drops the factory-warranty condition and applies that wait to any purchase after the car, and the April 2026 edition restores it. The customer site sells plans online as coverage “after your bumper-to-bumper warranty expires.” If your car is out of warranty, get the eligibility rule in writing.

What a new Cadillac already carries

The terms below come from the 2026 Cadillac booklet and the 2026 electric vehicle booklet. We compared nine terms with the 2025 booklet and none changed.

Coverage in Cadillac’s 2026 Limited Warranty and 2026 Electric Vehicle booklets, read on 30 September 2026. Each runs from the date the vehicle was first delivered or put in use and ends at whichever limit comes first.
CoverageTermWhat it covers
Bumper-to-Bumper4 years or 50,000 milesThe complete vehicle, except other coverages and listed exclusions; tires prorated
Powertrain6 years or 70,000 milesEngine, transmission, transfer case and drive systems as listed, with the exclusions above
Powertrain, ZR3 professional vehicles3 years or 150,000 milesQualified XT5, XT6, Escalade and Escalade ESV professional vehicles
Restraint systems6 years or 72,000 milesSeatbelts and airbags
Surface corrosion4 years or 50,000 milesBody sheet metal
Rust-through6 years, unlimited milesPanels rusted through to a hole
EV propulsion battery8 years or 100,000 milesElectric models: the pack and its internal parts, including capacity below 75% of original

Some items get less. Brake pads, filters, fluids, alignment and tire rotation are covered for only 7,500 miles, and remote key batteries and defect-caused windshield cracks for 12 months. Defective tires are replaced in full to 12,000 miles, then at a falling share of the price, down to 20% between 30,001 and 50,000 miles. Roadside assistance lasts as long as powertrain coverage on gas models. On electric models, towing runs 8 years or 100,000 miles and other services 6 years or 70,000. The booklet says roadside help and courtesy transportation aren’t part of the warranty and can be withdrawn.

The warranty passes to later owners. It is void on any vehicle ever titled salvage, junk or total loss, and on a rebuilt write-off, so a salvage or rebuilt title ends it whatever the odometer says. Parts, calibrations or software not issued through GM void cover for what they damage, running a premium-fuel car below 91 octane may not be covered, and damage from not installing an over-the-air update within 45 days isn’t. cadillac.com’s warranty page adds a rule for 2023 Escalade-V owners, whose main coverages are voided if the car changes hands within a 6 month retention period, and describes rust-through cover as typically 6 years or 100,000 miles, where the booklet says unlimited miles. The booklet is the warranty. It also says Cadillac may help case by case after it expires, and sometimes runs special coverage adjustment programs, so ask a dealer to check your VIN before paying for a repair.

Deductible, benefit caps and what the plan will pay

Cadillac prints no deductible for the main plan, only “Choose the term and deductible that work for you.” The contract supplies the rules. If none is listed, the deductible is $0, and it applies per repair visit. A disappearing deductible is waived when you return to the selling dealer, which you can ask to change if you move more than 100 miles. Any deductible is waived when a part already repaired under the plan fails again.

The extra benefits have printed caps, the same in both editions:

  • Rental car: up to $40 a day for up to 10 days, with prior authorization. That is up to $400 per repair, our multiplication.
  • Roadside assistance: up to $100 per occurrence, plus up to 3 gallons of emergency fuel up to three times a calendar year.
  • Trip interruption: up to $200 a day for up to five days, $1,000 in all, when a breakdown 100 miles or more from home is held overnight for parts. Expenses must fall within 72 hours and receipts arrive within 60 days.

Both contracts exclude New York residents from trip interruption, while Cadillac Financial’s page says New York or California. Payments are capped three ways: at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price for parts and labor in a guide such as Mitchell or Alldata, at the car’s actual cash value for any one repair visit, and at what you paid for the car over the whole term. Diagnosis isn’t paid if the failure turns out not to be covered, and if another warranty or recall pays less than the plan would, the obligor pays the difference.

What no level covers, and the wear-item plan sold separately

Platinum’s May 2023 exclusion list is mostly wear and body parts: the clutch, glass, lenses, body panels and trim, tires, wheels and alignment, batteries other than hybrid and electric ones, wiper blades, brake pads and rotors, lights, fuses and bulbs, filters and fluids, upholstery, paint, heater and radiator hoses, the exhaust system and the catalytic converter. Every level also excludes maintenance, pre-existing conditions, branded vehicles and commercial use unless the option is bought.

The January 2026 brochure prints a longer list, with 12 items the May 2023 contract doesn’t name, among them spark plugs, headlamps, LEDs, brake linings and drums, multimedia software updates and non-factory equipment. It also excludes batteries “Including 12-volt and hybrid batteries”, where the May 2023 contract excluded them “EXCEPT FOR HYBRID/ELECTRIC BATTERIES”. The April 2026 contract sides with the brochure, which on a hybrid Cadillac decides whether the battery pack is covered.

Read the contract, not the card. The plan page, FAQ, brochure and sell sheet don’t agree on the longest term, and the brochure says Silver covers all mechanical parts when the contract lists them. Ask for the contract with your VIN on it, check the form number, the obligor line and the Wrap box, and read what isn’t covered first.

Cadillac sells wear items as a separate product. Its April 2026 Advanced Protection brochure covers headlamps, fuses and bulbs, one alignment, one set of wiper blades, one 12-volt battery, one set of brake pads and most engine belts and hoses, for up to 6 years or 72,000 miles with no deductible, but only on a car no more than 12 months from its in-service date and under 12,000 miles. It has the same obligor and administrator.

Electric Cadillacs: a separate plan with one level

Because the Protection Plan excludes fully electric vehicles, an electric Cadillac needs the Cadillac EV Protection Plan. Its sample contract, form CAEVSC 5/23, has one level, Platinum, and no Wrap option: every EV plan starts on its purchase date. The EV page offers terms up to 96 months or 100,000 miles and deductibles of $0, $100, $100 disappearing or $250, though the sample contract has no disappearing-deductible clause.

The benefits are larger: up to $50 a day for a rental car or rideshare for up to 10 days ($500 per repair, our multiplication), and roadside help up to $200 per occurrence, including a tow to a charging station. The battery is the catch. The EV contract’s exclusions name batteries without exception, along with charging connectors, adapters and hardwired chargers, fire damage and use of the car as a stationary power source. The propulsion battery is covered by the factory warranty instead, for 8 years or 100,000 miles including capacity loss below 75%. Past that, see EV battery replacement cost. An EV plan bought after the sale needs at least one month and 1,000 miles of factory warranty left, and an out-of-warranty car must be inspected first.

Claims, transfers and cancellation

Authorization from the administrator is required before any repair, and the obligor reserves the right to inspect the car first. The May 2023 contract says to use the selling dealer if possible and otherwise call the administrator. The April 2026 edition allows your preferred GM dealership, and the FAQ says “any GM Dealer or authorized service provider.” Claims must be submitted within 30 days of authorization, and after an out-of-hours emergency repair the paperwork is due within 30 days of the breakdown. You must follow the owner’s manual maintenance schedule and keep the original receipts, and you shouldn’t keep driving after a warning: the 2026 edition won’t pay for damage that causes.

The plan transfers only in a private sale or lease takeover, for a $50 fee ($40 in Florida) requested within 30 days. It can’t pass through a dealer or trade-in, so at trade-in, cancel it for a refund.

You can cancel at any time in writing:

  • Within 30 days, no claim paid: a full refund, or within 60 days in California and Florida (Florida deducts any claims paid).
  • Later, or after a claim: pro rata by whichever of time or mileage has run further, less claims paid and a $50 fee. In California the fee is $25 or 10% of the price, whichever is less.
  • If financed: the refund goes to the lender unless the loan is paid off.

cadillac.com says the full refund applies “if no claims have been filed”, but the contract says paid. The April 2026 edition adds that refunds are paid within 30 days. See our guides to cancelling a plan and how cancellations go wrong.

Disputes: arbitration in the plan, BBB AUTO LINE for the warranty

The contract sends disputes to impartial arbitration: you propose at least three arbitrators, the administrator picks one, and the cost is shared equally unless the arbitrator directs otherwise. State pages change that in 20 states: Georgia, Mississippi, Nebraska and Wisconsin delete it, Vermont makes it voluntary, and 15 others, California and Florida among them, amend or replace it. The April 2026 edition also replaces it for Alaska.

The Cadillac warranty booklets contain no arbitration clause. Their route is BBB AUTO LINE: free, available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, generally hearing a case within 40 days, and a decision you can reject. The booklet does bar class and representative claims.

A Cadillac Protection Plan, a third-party contract, or neither

Whether any service contract is worth buying is covered in our guide to whether an extended warranty is worth it. On a Cadillac, three questions narrow it.

First, what you already have: 4 years or 50,000 miles bumper to bumper and 6 years or 70,000 on the powertrain, which every plan’s term runs through. A Wrap plan stops at the powertrain warranty’s end points, so it only covers the non-powertrain gap. An additive plan can run past them. Second, the level: Powertrain adds the fuel pump and wheel bearings, Silver the starter and heater core, Platinum the radiator, wiring and electronics. Third, who backs it and the price. GM Protections, LLC owes the repair (Safe-Guard in California on current documents), and an insurer stands behind it in 26 states and DC. A third-party contract names its own, and a state register shows how to check. No Cadillac document prints a price. why there is no sticker price and where the markup comes from explain how it is set. Our GM page covers the complaint file of GM’s lender, and for older cars some insurers sell mechanical breakdown insurance.

  • Find the form number. CAVSC 5/23 and GMPVSC 4/26 differ on batteries, breakdowns, California and where to take the car.
  • Ask whether it is Wrap, and get the end date and mileage printed on the quote.
  • Get the blanks filled in: term, price and deductible are blank on the sample.
  • Match the level to the gaps. The radiator and wiring are Platinum only, and coolant hoses are never covered.
  • On a hybrid, check the battery wording.
  • Read your state’s page for arbitration, refund windows, fees and trip interruption.
  • Keep every service receipt, and get authorization before any repair.
  • Cancel at trade-in. The plan can’t transfer through a dealer.

Calls saying your Cadillac warranty is about to expire are a separate matter. In 2022 the FTC sued American Vehicle Protection Corp., a Florida seller it alleged had falsely claimed to be, or to be associated with, consumers’ carmakers or dealers, and had promised bumper-to-bumper or full coverage that was much more limited than represented. A stipulated order in March 2023 and a further order that July banned defendants from selling extended auto warranties and from outbound telemarketing. In 2024 the FTC sent more than $449,000 in refunds to consumers. See what regulators have done.

Common questions

How much does the Cadillac extended warranty cost?

Cadillac doesn’t publish a price, and the sample contract leaves it blank. It varies with the car, level, term and deductible and is negotiable, and our guide to extended car warranty cost explains what moves it. A full refund is available within 30 days if no claim has been paid, 60 in California and Florida.

Is the Cadillac Protection Plan backed by GM?

Cadillac’s FAQ says it is “backed by General Motors.” The contract makes GM Protections, LLC the obligor, with Safe-Guard Products International, LLC as administrator, and doesn’t say how GM Protections relates to General Motors. In 26 states and DC, Virginia Surety Company, Inc. insures the obligor’s obligations.

What is the difference between Cadillac Silver and Platinum coverage?

Silver covers only the parts its list names. Platinum covers any mechanical breakdown except its exclusions, including damage a covered part causes to an uncovered one. Of the parts the factory powertrain warranty leaves out, the radiator and wiring are Platinum only.

Can I buy a Cadillac extended warranty after I bought the car?

The FAQ says yes while at least 1,000 miles or 30 days of factory warranty remain. The overview page says any time up to 8 years or 100,000 miles, and the contract adds a 30-day or 1,000-mile waiting period if you buy after the factory warranty has ended. Get the rule in writing.

Is the Cadillac Protection Plan transferable?

Yes, in a private sale or lease takeover, for $50 ($40 in Florida) within 30 days, but not through a dealer or trade-in.

Does the Cadillac factory warranty transfer to a second owner?

Yes, for the rest of its term. The exception on cadillac.com is the 2023 Escalade-V, whose main coverages are voided if ownership changes within a 6 month retention period after delivery.
