Towing Capacity by VIN: Why the Lookup Does Not Exist

The short version
- You cannot get towing capacity from a VIN. It is not in the federal vehicle record, so no decoder can return it.
- NHTSA publishes 144 variables in its VIN decoder. Towing capacity is not one of them, and neither is any equivalent.
- What the VIN does give you is the information needed to look the figure up: the exact model, year, engine, drive type and gross weight rating.
- Towing capacity is a property of a configuration, not of a vehicle. Two identical-looking trucks with different axle ratios tow different amounts.

This is a question with a clean answer, and the answer is no.
Towing capacity cannot be decoded from a VIN, because towing capacity is not recorded against the VIN anywhere in the federal system. That is worth establishing first, because a number of sites will happily return one, and it is worth understanding what they are actually doing when they do.
What the federal decoder actually contains
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration operates the Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing, usually shortened to vPIC. It is the decoder behind most VIN lookups, and manufacturers are required to submit the data that populates it.
vPIC publishes its complete variable list, which is what makes this question answerable rather than a matter of opinion. There are 144 variables. They cover the make, the model, the model year, the plant, the body class, the engine, the transmission, the brake system, the restraint systems, the gross vehicle weight rating and a long tail of safety equipment.
There is no towing capacity variable. There is no maximum trailer weight, and no tow rating under any other name.
This is not an oversight. vPIC records how a vehicle was built and certified for safety compliance. Towing capacity is an engineering rating the manufacturer publishes for a particular configuration, and it is not part of the certification data submitted to the agency.
Why it could not work even in principle
The deeper reason is that towing capacity is not a property of the vehicle the VIN identifies.
Take two pickups from the same plant in the same week, same cab, same bed, same engine. Give them different rear axle ratios. Give one the factory towing package with its transmission cooler and heavier hitch receiver, and leave it off the other. Their towing capacities differ, sometimes by thousands of pounds.
The VIN does not always distinguish them. VIN characters four through eight encode the vehicle attributes the manufacturer chose to encode — body style, engine, restraint system, series — and axle ratio and towing package frequently are not among them. Where the VIN does not separate two configurations, no lookup built on the VIN can separate them either.
This is why a towing figure returned from seventeen characters should be treated as a guess about the model rather than a fact about the vehicle. It is often approximately right, and approximately right is dangerous in a domain where exceeding the rating is both unsafe and an insurance problem.
What the VIN does give you, which is most of the way there
The useful reframing is that the VIN is the input to the lookup rather than the lookup itself.
A decode returns the model year, the make, the model, the series or trim, the body class, the drive type, the engine displacement and cylinder count, and the gross vehicle weight rating. Those are precisely the fields a manufacturer’s towing guide is indexed by.
So the sequence that works is: decode the VIN to establish exactly which vehicle you are looking at, then take those attributes to the manufacturer’s published towing guide for that model year. That gets you the real figure rather than an inferred one, and it takes a few minutes.

The weight rating that is in there, and what it is not
vPIC does publish the gross vehicle weight rating, as a from-and-to range. This is genuinely useful and it is routinely confused with towing capacity, so it is worth separating them.
Gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum the vehicle itself may weigh, fully loaded — the vehicle, the fuel, the people, the cargo, and the downward force from a trailer tongue. It is a limit on the vehicle.
Towing capacity is the maximum the vehicle may pull behind it. It is a limit on the trailer.

Where the real number lives
Three sources, in order of authority.
The door placard. Every vehicle carries a certification label on the driver’s door jamb, showing the gross vehicle weight rating and the axle ratings. It does not usually show towing capacity, but it is the primary record for the weight limits that constrain it.
The manufacturer’s towing guide for that model year. This is the authoritative source. Manufacturers publish them annually, broken down by cab, bed, engine, drive type and axle ratio, and that breakdown is the whole point — it is the level of detail a VIN cannot reach.
The owner’s manual for the specific vehicle. Less granular than the towing guide but tied to the actual vehicle rather than to a model range.
If the axle ratio is not documented anywhere you can find, a franchised dealer can retrieve the original build specification from the VIN through the manufacturer’s own system — which is a different and much richer database than the federal one.
The other half nobody checks
Towing capacity is only one of the limits, and buyers focused on it often miss the ones that bind first.
The tongue weight rating, the gross combined weight rating, the hitch receiver’s own class rating and the rear axle rating all constrain what you can legally and safely tow, and the lowest of them wins. A truck rated to pull a heavy trailer with a weight-distributing hitch is rated for considerably less without one.

What to check on the VIN instead
If you are buying a tow vehicle, the VIN answers questions that matter more than the ones it cannot.
It establishes that the vehicle is what the advert says — right year, right engine, right drive type — which is the commonest way a towing plan goes wrong before it starts. It gives you the gross weight rating. And it is the key to the safety record: open recalls, reported odometer history, and title brands from other states.
A truck with an open recall on its braking system is a worse tow vehicle than any capacity table can express. You can decode the VIN and pull the recall and title record before you commit to a vehicle you intend to work hard.
Common questions
Can you find towing capacity from a VIN?
No. Towing capacity is not among the 144 variables NHTSA publishes in its VIN decoder, and it is not recorded against the VIN elsewhere in the federal system. Any site returning one from a VIN alone is inferring it from the model.
Why do some websites show a towing capacity for my VIN?
Because they are matching your decoded model to a published figure for that model, not reading a figure attached to your vehicle. That inference fails wherever the VIN does not encode axle ratio or the presence of a towing package, which is common.
Is GVWR the same as towing capacity?
No. Gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum the vehicle itself may weigh when loaded. Towing capacity is the maximum weight it may pull. Neither can be derived from the other, and only the first is in the VIN record.
Where is the real towing capacity for my vehicle?
The manufacturer’s towing guide for that model year, indexed by cab, engine, drive type and axle ratio. The door placard carries the weight ratings, and a franchised dealer can retrieve the original build specification from the VIN.
What does the VIN tell me that helps?

Does the axle ratio appear in the VIN?
