The tell is a clunk when you turn
The signature symptom is a clunk or knock as you turn the wheel — 21.6% of column reports against 6.4% of the control, more than three times as often. It comes from the universal joints and the splines of the intermediate shaft wearing, so that a small amount of free rotation opens up and the joint knocks as it takes up under load. Unlike a suspension clunk, which every worn part in a tired front end produces, this one is distinctive to the column in the file. A vibration or buzz felt through the wheel (15.1% against 4.8%) is the second sign, and free play — the wheel moving a little before the car responds — the third (7% against 2.4%). All three are the marks of worn joints, not lost assist.
What runs below the control
The revealing part of the chart is what the column reports less than the rest of the steering system. Locking or the wheel not turning appears in 10.4% of column reports against 18.6% of the control, and hard or heavy steering in 8.5% against 15.5%. Those are the assist system’s failures — the pump, the electric motor, the rack — not the column’s. This is the useful distinction: if the steering has gone heavy or stuck, look past the column; if it clunks, buzzes or feels loose while still steering normally, the column and its intermediate shaft are the place to look.
