Towing Capacity: The Advertised Figure Is Not Your Truck

The short version
- A published tow rating describes a configuration, not a vehicle. One cab, one bed, one engine, one drivetrain, one axle ratio, lightly equipped and carrying a driver. The truck in front of you is a different vehicle and almost certainly has a different number.
- What actually governs is a set of weight ratings carried on the truck’s own labels. Federal law fixes what those labels must say, which is why “read the door jamb” is a procedure rather than folklore.
- Payload is the limit that binds first on most real setups, because the trailer’s tongue weight lands on the truck and comes out of payload before a single passenger is counted.
- Neither required label carries a towing capacity or a combined weight rating. The regulated content list is closed, and those two numbers are not on it.
- The hitch receiver, the ball mount and the trailer each carry ratings of their own. The lowest number in that chain is the one you are actually operating under.
- A truck that has towed hard is not automatically a worse buy. It is a different buy, and the inspection changes accordingly.
Every truck advert quotes a maximum. It is the number the manufacturer built the marketing around, the number the seller repeats, and the number that gets typed into a search box at eleven at night by somebody working out whether the caravan will move. It is also, for the specific truck you are looking at, very unlikely to be true.
This is not a story about dishonest advertising. The published figure is a real engineering result for a real vehicle: a particular cab and bed combination, a particular engine, a particular drivetrain, a particular rear axle ratio, lightly equipped, carrying a driver and not much else. Change any one of those and the number moves. Add a crew cab, four-wheel drive, a sunroof and a toolbox, put three people in it, and you are no longer describing the vehicle that was rated. What constrains you instead is a small set of weight ratings that belong to your truck specifically, and the binding one is usually not the number anyone quotes.
Why the advertised maximum is not your maximum
A tow rating is calculated backwards from limits, not forwards from ambition. The engineer starts with what the frame, brakes, cooling system, axles, springs and tyres will tolerate, works out how much combined weight the vehicle can move and stop safely, subtracts the weight of the vehicle itself, and publishes the remainder. Every pound added to the truck is a pound removed from that remainder.
This is why the maximum is quoted for the lightest useful configuration. A regular cab on a two-wheel-drive chassis with a short options list is meaningfully lighter than the same truck ordered with four doors and a driven front axle, and the gap is not small. The heavier truck may share a badge, an engine and a showroom with the lighter one, and it will not share the rating.
Axle ratio compounds it. Two trucks built in the same week, identical to look at, can leave the factory with different final drive ratios and different tow ratings as a result. So can the presence or absence of a factory towing package, which usually bundles a heavier receiver, an auxiliary transmission cooler, revised cooling and a wiring harness.
The one thing the VIN will not tell you
The obvious move is to decode the seventeen characters and read the answer off. It does not work. No tow rating is filed against the seventeen characters anywhere in the federal system, so a decoder has nothing to return. That question has a page of its own — why a VIN will not give you a tow rating — and the argument is not repeated here.
What matters here is the asymmetry. Of the one hundred and forty-four variables NHTSA publishes in its decoder, gross vehicle weight rating is one. Towing capacity is not, under that name or any other. So the federal record hands you a hard constraint on the vehicle and stays silent on the tow figure — which is a fair description of the whole problem. The constraints are documented. The headline is not.
The ratings that actually govern
Five numbers do the work. They are frequently used interchangeably in conversation and they measure entirely different things.
Gross vehicle weight rating
GVWR is the ceiling on what the loaded truck itself may weigh: the truck, its fluids, everyone in it, everything in the bed, and the downward force the trailer puts on the hitch. The manufacturer certifies it against whatever component gives out first, and the figure never moves afterwards. Stiffer springs do not raise it. Larger tyres do not raise it. Gross axle weight rating, front and rear
GAWR is the same idea applied one axle at a time, and it is the rating people forget exists. A truck can sit comfortably under its GVWR and still be over its rear axle rating, because towing loads the back of the vehicle and unloads the front. Hitching a heavy trailer transfers weight rearward; the rear axle takes the tongue weight plus a share of what the leverage removes from the front. Two axle ratings and one vehicle rating means three ways to be overloaded, and only one of them shows up on a single-pad weigh.
Gross combined weight rating
GCWR is the ceiling for truck and trailer together, everything included. It is the rating that governs whether the powertrain and the brakes can move and stop the whole assembly, and it is the one that most directly limits how heavy a trailer can be — because trailer weight is simply GCWR minus what the loaded truck weighs on the day. Load the truck heavily and the trailer allowance shrinks by exactly that much. Two people and a full bed can cost you more trailer than most owners expect.
Payload, and why it usually binds first
Payload is the difference between what the truck weighs empty and what it is allowed to weigh loaded. It is not a rating in its own right so much as an arithmetic consequence of one, and it is where towing plans die.
Here is the part everybody misses. The trailer does not float behind the truck. A meaningful share of its weight presses down on the ball, and that force is carried by the truck, which means it is deducted from payload. Tongue weight is not a rounding error and it is not optional; it is a substantial fraction of what the trailer weighs, and a conventional trailer will not tow safely without it. So the sequence runs: start with payload, subtract tongue weight, and only then start adding passengers, tools, fuel cans, dogs and the bed liner. On a heavy trailer, tongue weight alone can consume most of what the truck had available.
This is why a truck can be nowhere near its published tow rating and still be illegally and unsafely loaded. The trailer is within the tow figure. The truck is over its payload, or over its rear axle rating, and nothing in the advert warned you.
Tongue weight is a proportion, not an afterthought
Too little tongue weight and the trailer sways, which is the failure mode that ends with a truck facing the wrong way on a motorway. Too much and the front axle unloads until steering and braking degrade. The correct figure is a proportion of the loaded trailer weight, and it is controlled by where the load sits relative to the trailer’s axles rather than by anything on the truck. Move cargo forward, tongue weight rises. Move it back, it falls, and stability falls with it.
A weight-distributing hitch changes how that force is shared between the axles. It does not make it disappear, and it does not raise any rating. It redistributes.
The arithmetic that makes it concrete
Curb weight plus payload equals GVWR. That relationship is not a rule of thumb somebody invented for a forum post — it is close to how the federal rule defines the rating in the first place.
The certification regulation in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations requires the label to state a gross vehicle weight rating, and it constrains what that figure may be: it “shall not be less than the sum of the unloaded vehicle weight, rated cargo load” and an occupant allowance of 150 pounds for each of the vehicle’s designated seating positions. Read that slowly, because it contains two useful facts.
First, the rating is built from curb weight plus cargo plus people. The arithmetic you would do to work out payload is the arithmetic the manufacturer did to set the ceiling, run in reverse. Second, the occupant allowance is a formula figure, not a measurement of your family. The rule fixes a per-seat allowance and applies it to the number of seats, which means a crew-cab truck carries an assumption about five people whether or not five people ever sit in it, and a truck full of adults heavier than the allowance is consuming payload faster than the rating anticipated.
None of that requires you to trust a manufacturer’s marketing. It requires you to weigh the truck as it actually stands — with its bed liner, its toolbox, its winch, its fuel and its bull bar — and subtract that from the rating on the label. Published curb weights describe a base vehicle nobody owns. The scale describes yours.
Where these numbers physically live
Two labels on the truck are federally required, and between them they carry most of what you need. Knowing exactly what each one must contain is what turns this from a hunt into a checklist.
The certification label
The certification label is the one on the driver’s side door jamb. The rule is specific about where it goes — the hinge pillar, the door-latch post, or the door edge that meets the latch post, next to the driver’s seating position — and it must be readable without moving any part of the vehicle except an outer door. It must be riveted or permanently fixed so that it cannot be removed without being destroyed or defaced.
The content is a closed list, in a fixed order: the manufacturer’s name, the month and year of manufacture, the gross vehicle weight rating, the gross axle weight rating for each axle identified front to rear, a statement of conformity with the applicable federal standards, the vehicle identification number, and the vehicle’s type classification. Everything is in block capitals, at a minimum lettering height of three thirty-seconds of an inch.
Three consequences follow directly. GVWR and both axle ratings are required content, so a legible label always has them — that is what makes the instruction reliable. The list is closed, so a towing capacity is not on it and never was. And because the conformity wording differs for trucks above and below 6,000 pounds GVWR, the sentence on the label quietly confirms which side of that line the vehicle sits on.
The tyre and loading information label
The second label is separate, is easy to walk past, and carries the number most buyers should be reading. It is headed “Tire and Loading Information”, and it usually sits on the driver’s side B-pillar rather than on the door jamb proper. Standard No. 110 fixes its contents: the original tyre sizes, the recommended cold inflation pressures, the number of seats, and a vehicle capacity weight stated in plain language as the combined weight of occupants and cargo that should never be exceeded.
That last line is payload, printed on the vehicle, for that vehicle as it left the factory. It is a better starting point than any published curb weight, because it was calculated for the truck as built rather than for a base model. It still has to be adjusted for everything added since, and tongue weight still comes out of it.

When the labels have been superseded
A vehicle altered before its first sale in a way that affects its weight ratings has to be re-certified, and a fresh tyre and loading label has to be fitted so that it obscures the original. Trucks built in stages — a chassis-cab finished by a body company — can carry labels from more than one manufacturer, and it is the final-stage label that governs. If you are looking at a truck with a service body, a flatbed or a utility conversion, find out which label is the current one before you trust any figure on it. A label that has been painted over, replaced with a reproduction, or is missing entirely from a door that has clearly been changed tells you the ratings you are reading may belong to a different vehicle.
The other end of the chain
Everything above concerns the truck. The trailer, the hitch and the coupling have ratings of their own, and the lowest one in the chain is the one you are operating under. This is where a well-matched truck gets undone by a fifty-dollar part.
The trailer’s own ratings
A trailer carries a GVWR too — the maximum it may weigh loaded — and axle ratings underneath it. Loaded trailer weight, not the empty weight in the brochure, is what your truck is towing. Water, fuel, gas bottles, tools and everything that lives in the lockers between trips are part of it. A trailer within its own rating and a truck within its own rating can still be an unlawful combination if the pair exceeds the truck’s combined rating.
The hitch and the ball mount
The receiver bolted to the truck has a rating stamped or plated on it, and so does the removable ball mount, and so does the ball itself. They are not necessarily the same, and the assembly is limited by whichever is lowest. Receivers commonly carry two sets of figures: one for weight-carrying use and a higher one for use with a weight-distributing hitch. Reading the higher figure and towing without the distributing hardware is a common and expensive mistake.
On a used truck, none of this hardware is necessarily original. Aftermarket receivers get fitted, ball mounts get swapped, and the rating stamped on the part in the tube today may have nothing to do with what the factory installed. Check the actual parts on the actual truck.
Brakes on the trailer
Above a certain weight, a trailer must have brakes of its own, together with a breakaway system that applies them if it separates from the tow vehicle. The thresholds and the details are set by state law and they vary — a combination that is legal where the truck is registered may not be legal where you are driving it, and the requirement follows the road rather than the plate. If the truck you are considering has a brake controller fitted, that is a sign of how it was used. If it does not, and your trailer needs one, that is a cost to add to the purchase price.
Buying a used truck: reading what it has already pulled
A used truck arrives with a history the seller may or may not describe accurately. Towing leaves marks, and they are legible if you know where to look.
Signs the truck has been working
- The receiver tube. Look inside it. A tube that has had a ball mount slid in and out for years is polished bright on its lower inside face and often scored. Check whether the pin holes have gone oval; that is repeated shock loading, not cosmetic wear.
- The ball. A ball that has done real work is shiny on the leading face, sometimes flattened, and the chrome is gone where the coupler rode. A pristine ball on a truck with a worn tube means the ball was replaced, which is fine, but it is not evidence the truck is untowed.
- The wiring. A factory harness ends in a moulded connector fitted flush and wired into the loom. An aftermarket installation is spliced, usually with crimped taps, and the connector often hangs on a bracket that does not match the bumper. Corroded pins mean the truck towed in salt or in weather. A blanking plate under the dash where a brake controller used to sit is worth asking about.
- The transmission cooler. Look through the grille for a cooler mounted ahead of the radiator, and look at how it is mounted. Factory installations are bracketed and routed tidily. A cooler zip-tied in front of the condenser was added by an owner who had a reason to add it. - Rear suspension. Stand back and compare the arch gaps front and rear. A rear that sits noticeably lower has either carried a lot or has tired springs. Look for helper springs, air bags or an added leaf. Those are not disqualifying, but they mean someone was treating a symptom, and they do not raise a single rating.
- The hitch mounting. Get under the back. Factory receivers bolt to prepared points. A receiver that is welded on, or bolted through holes drilled in the frame rails, is a modification, and how well it was done is now your problem.
A working truck is not automatically a worse truck
The instinct is to walk away from anything that has towed. That instinct is worth interrogating.
Towing loads the driveline and the suspension, and the complaint archive carries a faint trace of it. Ranked by the mileage owners gave when they filed, power train sits at a median of 49,000 miles from 124 readings and suspension at 53,000 from 27, against 60,000 for every category in the file taken together. Those are safety complaints, not failure rates, and the sample is right-censored — it leans towards cars still early in their lives, which drags the absolute mileages down. The ranking is the half worth reading; the levels are not.
The recall record points the same way and no harder. Across 145 distinct campaigns in 24 component families, suspension accounts for four campaigns spread over three manufacturers — a recurring theme across unrelated makers rather than one company’s problem. Those campaigns were pulled per vehicle across the makes and models this site tracks, so they count what happened to those vehicles rather than what happens across the market.
Set against that: a truck bought to tow was usually bought by someone who intended to tow, which often means a factory package, an auxiliary cooler, a maintained cooling system and a service folder with differential and transmission work in it. A truck used for short unloaded suburban trips has its own wear pattern, and it is not obviously the better one. The question is not whether the truck towed. It is whether it was maintained for the work it did. A folder that shows fluid services at the severe interval says more about a used truck than a low odometer reading does.

How to verify what this specific truck can tow
Not what the model can tow. This one.
- Photograph both labels. The certification label for GVWR and the two axle ratings, the tyre and loading label for the combined occupants-and-cargo figure. Do this before you negotiate; labels get painted over and doors get replaced.
- Weigh the truck as it stands. A public scale, with the fuel it has, the accessories fitted and nobody in it. That is your real curb weight, and the gap between it and the GVWR is your real payload.
- Establish the configuration. Cab, bed, engine, drivetrain and rear axle ratio. The axle ratio is the one that usually is not in the VIN, and a franchised dealer can retrieve it from the original build record.
- Match that configuration against the manufacturer’s published figures for the year. They are broken out by exactly those attributes, which is the whole point of them.
- Read the hardware. Receiver rating, ball mount rating, ball rating, and whether the receiver figure you are reading assumes a weight-distributing hitch.
- Do the subtraction in the right order. Payload, minus tongue weight, minus passengers, minus everything in the bed. If what remains is negative, the combination does not work regardless of what the tow rating says.
- Check the vehicle’s record. An open recall on the brakes or the suspension matters more on a truck you intend to load than on one you do not. You can run the VIN for recalls and title history before you go and look at it.
Steps one and two are the ones people skip, and they are the two that produce a number specific to the vehicle rather than to the brochure. Everything else in the process is a lookup. Those two are a measurement.
Where a pre-purchase inspection fits
An independent inspection will find the things a walk-round will not: a bent or repaired frame behind the hitch, a rear differential that has been run hot, brake wear that does not match the odometer, and cooling-system condition. Common questions
Where do I find the real towing capacity for a used truck?
In the towing guide the manufacturer published for that model year, which breaks its figures out by cab, bed, engine, drivetrain and rear axle ratio. It is on neither of the truck’s required labels, because a tow rating is not part of the content either label must carry. The labels give you the weight ratings that constrain the answer; the towing guide gives you the figure for the configuration.
Why does payload matter more than towing capacity?
Because the trailer’s tongue weight presses down on the truck, and that force is deducted from payload before passengers and cargo are counted. A heavy trailer can consume most of a truck’s payload through tongue weight alone. That is how a combination stays under the published tow rating and still exceeds the truck’s gross vehicle weight rating or its rear axle rating.
What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?
GVWR is the ceiling for the loaded truck on its own. GCWR is the ceiling for truck and trailer together. Neither is derived from the other, both apply at the same time, and the combined rating is the one that most directly limits trailer weight — because the trailer allowance is the combined rating minus whatever the loaded truck actually weighs that day.
Can I raise my truck’s ratings with heavier springs or bigger tyres?
No. The ratings are certified by the manufacturer against the weakest element in the vehicle, and no aftermarket part changes the certified figure. Suspension upgrades can improve how a loaded truck behaves and can stop it sagging. They do not make it legal to exceed the number on the label, and most added hardware reduces usable payload by its own weight.
Does a truck that has towed a lot make a bad used buy?
Not necessarily. Towing is severe service and it loads the driveline and suspension, but a truck bought to tow was usually specified and maintained for it. Inspect the receiver, the wiring, the cooler and the rear suspension, then read the service folder for fluid changes at the severe interval. A maintained working truck can be a better buy than an unmaintained light one.
Do I need brakes on the trailer?
Above a weight threshold, yes, along with a breakaway system. The threshold and the specifics are set by state law and differ between states, and the rules that apply are those of the state you are driving through rather than the one that issued your registration. Check the requirement for every state on the route before assuming a combination is legal.
The door label is missing. What now?
Treat the ratings as unverified. The certification label has to be permanently fixed so it cannot be removed without being destroyed, so an absent one usually means a replaced door, a repainted jamb, or a vehicle whose history needs explaining. A label from a different vehicle is worse than no label. Confirm the identity of the truck from the VIN and the federal record before relying on any weight figure attached to it.
