The short version

  • A pickup is bought for a job, and the job is settled by configuration — cab, bed, drivetrain, engine and weight rating — long before the badge is worth arguing about. Cab and bed trade against each other, and the trade is close to zero-sum.
  • The obvious way to confirm a configuration is to decode the VIN, so we measured how far that gets you: 4,903 distinct pickup decode descriptors, taken from 127,857 owner complaints across ten makes and twelve model years.
  • The federal record is excellent on the powertrain and the ceiling. Drive type came back on 99 per cent of descriptors, engine displacement on 98.6, fuel type on 98.3, and the certified gross vehicle weight rating on 99.7.
  • It is close to blank on the box. Bed length in inches came back on 2.3 per cent of descriptors and curb weight on 0.8 — the two lowest fields of the nineteen we counted, and the two that decide whether your load fits and what the truck may still carry.
  • Cab type is the middle case and it depends on the manufacturer, not on you: 100 per cent populated on Ford descriptors, 76.4 on Chevrolet, 41.9 on Honda and zero on Jeep.
  • Because curb weight is missing, payload cannot be derived from a VIN at all. Payload is the rating minus what the truck weighs today, and only one half of that subtraction is in the record.
  • Half-ton, three-quarter-ton and one-ton are nicknames, not ratings. All twenty-two nameplates we could measure are certified across more than one weight class band under a single model name, and the F-250 and F-350 bands overlap.

Most used-car advice transfers badly to pickups, because most used cars are bought to be a car. A pickup is bought to do something, and the something is specific: move a trailer, carry tools to sites, take four people and a load of timber, get down a track in February. The truck that does one of those well is frequently poor at another, and the difference is not the badge on the tailgate. It is a set of choices made when the truck was ordered, by somebody else, years ago.

That is the awkward part of buying a used one. On a new truck the configuration is a decision you make. On a used truck it is a fact you inherit, and the work is finding out what it is before you pay for it. Everything below is about that: what the configuration choices cost each other, which of them the federal record can confirm for you, which it cannot, and what a truck that has worked for a living carries that a family SUV does not.

There is no shortlist here and nothing for sale. This site holds no inventory and lists no vehicles. What it has instead is a census run specifically for this page, because “can I check the configuration from the VIN” deserved a measured answer rather than a confident one — and the answer turned out to be more interesting than either yes or no.

Start with the job, because the truck is a set of trades

A pickup has a fixed amount of length to spend. The wheelbase carries a cab and a bed, and lengthening one shortens the other unless the whole truck gets longer — at which point it stops fitting in a garage, needs more room to turn, and drags more overhang over every driveway lip in the country. Almost every regret people report about a used truck comes from buying one end of that trade without noticing they were buying the other.

The cab end has a vocabulary problem. Every manufacturer names its cabs differently and the names imply more than they distinguish. The federal decoder cuts through it by defining cab type functionally, in doors and rows of seats. Its published list runs to twelve values, eight of which describe medium- and heavy-duty trucks by where the engine sits relative to the driver. Four of them describe pickups.

Read that as a warning about adverts rather than as trivia. Six different marketing words sit in one row of it. A listing that says “super cab” and a listing that says “double cab” are describing the same thing as far as the register is concerned: two doors, two rows. The second row behind a two-door cab is a real seat and it is not the seat you get behind four doors — access is through the front door aperture, the backrest is usually more upright, and child seats are a genuine nuisance. Buyers who read “two rows” as crew-cab practicality find out on the school run.

Where cab type was recorded in our census, the used pickup population is overwhelmingly four-door: crew cabs account for 60.5 per cent of descriptors carrying a cab type, the two-door two-row family for 30.7, plain regular cabs for 7.9 and Mega cabs for 0.9. If you want a regular cab with a long bed, you are shopping in the thin end of the market and should expect to travel for one.

The bed end of the trade gets less attention than it deserves, because on a used truck the bed is the part that has already been used. Bed length decides whether sheet material lies flat, whether a motorcycle fits with the tailgate up, and whether a fifth-wheel coupling has room to swing. It is also the dimension a seller is least likely to state precisely and most likely to describe with an adjective.

Drivetrain is the third choice and the one with the clearest running cost attached. Four-wheel drive adds weight, adds a transfer case and a front differential to maintain, and takes its weight straight out of payload. Worth having if you need it; a permanent tax if you do not.

All of which is an argument for establishing the configuration precisely before travelling to look at anything — and the obvious tool is the seventeen characters on the windscreen. So we measured how far those characters actually get you.

Read this as a map of the record rather than of the trucks. An empty field does not mean the truck lacks the feature — vPIC attaches the same caution to every response it returns, that a missing value means the agency holds no data on that variable. A blank bed-length field is a record that cannot tell you the length, not a pickup without a bed. Nineteen configuration fields were counted over 4,903 distinct decode descriptors, resolved from 127,857 owner complaints across ten makes and the 2012 to 2023 model years and pulled on 7 September 2026; complaints were used only as a source of real eleven-character VIN prefixes, the narratives were never archived, and nothing here is a fault rate. Nor is it a market share: a configuration that sold in enormous numbers contributes one descriptor, exactly like one that barely sold. The shape is a cliff rather than a void. The powertrain and the ceiling come back nearly every time, and the two fields at the foot — bed length on 112 descriptors and curb weight on 39 — are the two that decide whether your load fits and what the truck may still carry. Because curb weight is in the record on 0.8 per cent and the rating on 99.7, payload cannot be derived from a VIN at all: only one half of the subtraction is there. Both numbers that settle it are on the labels in the door aperture, and the honest tools for the rest are a tape measure and a weighbridge.

What the federal record confirms about a pickup, and where it stops

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration runs the Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing — vPIC — the decoder underneath most VIN lookups, populated from data manufacturers are required to submit. It publishes a field for cab type, a field for bed type, a field for bed length in inches, a field for curb weight in pounds and fields for wheelbase, doors and seat rows. The fields exist. Whether anybody filled them in for the truck in front of you is a different question, and it is answerable only by counting.

How the count was built

NHTSA publishes an eleven-character VIN with most owner complaints: positions one to eleven, which is the manufacturer identifier, the whole descriptor block, the check digit, the model-year character and the plant code. Positions twelve to seventeen are the serial and carry nothing a decoder reads. That makes the complaint file, incidentally, the largest public collection of real pickup VIN prefixes available — contributed by owners, and holding nothing personal in eleven characters.

We took every pickup entry the federal product index lists for ten makes across the 2012 to 2023 model years — 375 model-year entries under 89 distinct model names — and pulled the complaints filed against each. That produced 127,857 complaints, of which 96.7 per cent carried a usable eleven-character prefix, and 21,399 distinct prefixes.

Those 21,399 collapse to 5,439. The reason is worth stating, because it is the trap in this method: position nine is the check digit and the check digit is computed from all seventeen characters, so it moves with the serial. One configuration therefore appears in the complaint file under many prefixes that decode identically. vPIC returns its own descriptor for each decode with that position masked out, and deduplicating on it collapses the check-digit copies. Counting prefixes instead would have inflated everything below by roughly a factor of four and weighted it towards whichever configurations attracted the most complaints.

Of the 5,439 distinct descriptors, 4,903 came back with a body class of Pickup — 90.1 per cent. The rest are what you would expect at the edges of a nameplate: chassis cabs, cargo vans sharing a platform, a handful of sport-utility trucks, and 249 that returned no body class at all. Those are reported and excluded rather than quietly folded in.

Two things this count is not. It is not a fault rate: complaints were used purely as a source of real VIN prefixes, the narrative text was never archived and is not read anywhere in the exercise, and a complaint is a filing rather than a finding. And it is not a market share: a configuration that sold in enormous numbers contributes one descriptor, exactly like one that barely sold. What it is is an unweighted census of the pickup configurations that exist in the federal record, which is the right denominator for the only question here — decode a used pickup, and what comes back?

What comes back

The powertrain, almost always. Drive type is populated on 99 per cent of pickup descriptors, engine displacement on 98.6, primary fuel type on 98.3 and cylinder count on 95. The certified gross vehicle weight rating — published as a class band rather than a single figure — comes back on 99.7 per cent. Those are precisely the attributes a manufacturer’s own towing tables are indexed by, which is why decoding first and looking up second is the sequence that works.

Then there is a cliff. Cab type is populated on 87.2 per cent, trim on 79.8 and series on 58.1. Below that the numbers fall away fast: doors on 32.2 per cent, axles on 19, seat rows on 18.4, bed type on 16.5, seat count on 15.8, wheelbase type on 13, transmission style on 12.6 and wheelbase in inches on 10.3.

And at the bottom, the two fields a pickup buyer would most like to have. Bed length in inches came back on 112 descriptors — 2.3 per cent. Curb weight in pounds came back on 39 — 0.8 per cent. Out of nineteen configuration fields counted, those are the two least populated, and they are the two that decide whether your load fits and how much the truck may still carry.

Even the bed field that is populated is weaker than it looks. The register’s bed-type vocabulary has four values — long, short, extended and standard — so a populated bed type gives you an adjective, chosen by the manufacturer, not a measurement. Standard relative to what is not recorded anywhere.

An empty field is not a statement about the truck

vPIC attaches the same caution to every response it returns: a missing value means the agency does not hold data on that variable, and must not be read as the feature being absent from the vehicle. A blank bed-length field is not a truck without a bed. It is a record that cannot tell you the length. For a buyer the practical consequence is the same either way — the fact has to come from somewhere else — but the distinction matters when a seller waves a printed decode as evidence of what a truck does not have.

Whether the cab is confirmable depends on who built the truck

The 87.2 per cent figure for cab type is an average across manufacturers who behave very differently, and the spread is the practical finding. Every Ford descriptor in the census carries a cab type — 890 of 890. RAM fills it in on 99.4 per cent of 1,243, Nissan on 97.5, Toyota on 95.4 and Dodge on 88. Chevrolet fills it in on 76.4 per cent of 1,220 descriptors and GMC on 71.3 per cent of 762, which means that on a Silverado or a Sierra the decode will roughly a quarter of the time fail to settle the cab at all.

At the far end, Honda fills it in on 41.9 per cent, Hyundai on 47.1, and Jeep on none of its 32 descriptors at all. A blank field is sometimes harmless: where a nameplate was only ever built in one cab, there is nothing for the field to disambiguate and nothing is lost by its absence. The difficulty is that a decode returning nothing cannot tell you which case you are in, so the reassurance has to come from somewhere other than the decode.

The index cannot be sliced by cab either, for most makes

A second, smaller absence sits one level above the decode. NHTSA’s product index — the list you pick a model from before you can pull complaints or recalls — splits some pickups by cab and leaves the rest whole. Across the ten makes and twelve model years we queried, cab-specific model entries appear for Ford, Nissan and RAM. Every other make files its pickups under one name per nameplate with the cabs pooled together.

The consequence for research on a specific truck is direct. For most nameplates the federal complaint and recall record cannot be read by configuration, because the configurations are not separated in the index. A fault that showed up on crew cabs and not on regular cabs would appear in the file as a property of the model, and there is no way to test that from outside. Worth remembering before treating a nameplate’s complaint total as a description of the truck in front of you.

What this means on a forecourt

Carry a tape measure. That sounds glib and it is not: bed length is the most consequential dimension on a pickup for anyone who needs a specific one, it is missing from the federal record on all but 2.3 per cent of descriptors, and it is the number an advert is most likely to get casually wrong. Measure the bed floor from the bulkhead to the inside of the closed tailgate and write it down. Count the doors and the seat rows while you are there, because those fields are blank about two-thirds and four-fifths of the time respectively.

Payload is the binding limit, and no VIN can compute it

The rating a decode does return is the gross vehicle weight rating: the maximum the loaded truck may weigh, everything included, certified by the manufacturer against whichever component gives out first. It is a real, federally recorded number, and our guide to GVWR by VIN explains why it arrives as a band rather than a single figure.

Payload is what you actually need, and payload is a subtraction: the rating minus what the truck weighs as it stands today. The census settles what that means in practice. The first half of the subtraction is in the record on 99.7 per cent of descriptors. The second half — curb weight — is in the record on 0.8 per cent. A payload figure produced from a VIN alone is therefore not a lookup. It is an inference about the model, made by something that does not know what is bolted to the truck.

On a used pickup that gap is not academic, because things get bolted to trucks. A bed liner, a hard cover, a toolbox across the front of the bed, a set of steps, a heavier bumper, a winch, a rack, a plough mount left on after the blade came off — every one is weight the factory did not count, and every pound of it comes out of what the truck may still carry. A published curb weight describes a base vehicle nobody owns. The truck in front of you has a decade of additions on it.

So the useful move is a scale rather than a search box. A public weighbridge, the truck as it stands with the fuel it has and nobody in it, and the difference between that reading and the rating on the door label is the payload you actually have. Then the trailer’s tongue weight comes out of that before a single passenger is counted, which is the mechanism that makes payload rather than the tow rating the limit that usually binds first.

Where each number is published

The certification label in the driver’s door aperture is required by federal rule to carry the gross vehicle weight rating and an axle rating for each axle. The separate tyre and loading information label carries the combined weight of occupants and cargo the vehicle may take — payload, printed on the vehicle, calculated for that truck as it left the factory. Neither label carries a towing capacity, because a tow rating is not on either label’s required content list, and neither carries curb weight. Photograph both before you start negotiating: door skins get replaced and jambs get repainted.

Half-ton is a nickname. The rating is a class band.

The oldest shorthand in the pickup market is a payload figure from a market that no longer exists. Half-ton, three-quarter-ton and one-ton described what trucks of those classes could carry generations ago. They survive as model names and they are no longer descriptions of anything measurable. The federal record does not use them. It records a certified class band, and the bands are defined by weight.

Half-ton, three-quarter-ton and one-ton are nicknames from a market that no longer exists, and the federal record does not use them. What it records is a certified class band, defined by weight, and the shares above are shares of each nameplate’s own decode descriptors in the 2012 to 2023 census rather than of anybody’s sales. Only the nameplates whose band splits the article publishes appear here; the census covers twenty-two with at least twenty descriptors each, and decoded pickups land in twelve of the sixteen published bands. Two cautions before using it on a specific truck. Some manufacturers file at the coarse parent class rather than the subdivided one, so a truck certified as Class 2 has told you less than one certified as Class 2E, and the record’s precision is a manufacturer’s choice. And the rating is a ceiling for the loaded truck, not a payload: what the truck may still carry is the rating less what it weighs as it stands today, with a decade of liners, covers, toolboxes and racks on it. Read the band for the specific truck from the certification label in the door aperture, then check what your own state does with it, because the rules attached to 10,000 lb are set state by state rather than federally.

Across the census, decoded pickups fall into twelve distinct class bands out of the sixteen the register publishes. The distribution is not what the marketing implies.

Two rows in that table are the coarse parent classes rather than the subdivided ones, and they are there because some manufacturers file at that precision and some do not. A truck certified as “Class 2: 6,001 – 10,000 lb” has told you rather less than one certified as Class 2E. Nearly a third of Toyota Tundra descriptors sit in that coarse band. The record’s precision is a manufacturer’s choice too.

The number that matters most to a buyer is not any single row. It is the spread inside one nameplate. Of the twenty-two nameplates with enough descriptors to measure, every single one is certified across more than one class band under the same model name.

The Chevrolet Silverado is the clearest case: 896 descriptors spanning four bands, from Class 2E at 46.3 per cent up to Class 3 at 10.4. That is one badge covering everything from a truck rated under 7,000 pounds to one rated up to 14,000. The Ford F-150 spans three bands across 592 descriptors, mostly 2E at 58.4 per cent and 2F at 37.2. The RAM 1500 is the tidiest of the full-size half-tons, 88.5 per cent of its 668 descriptors in Class 2E.

The heavy-duty badges are where the nicknames break down completely. The F-250 is 90.8 per cent Class 2H and 9.2 per cent Class 3. The F-350 is 79.1 per cent Class 3 and 20.9 per cent Class 2H. Those ranges overlap. A fifth of the one-ton descriptors sit in the same band as nine-tenths of the three-quarter-ton ones, and a tenth of the three-quarter-tons sit in the band above. The badge does not order the ratings.

Nor does the badge tell you which side of ten thousand pounds a truck sits on. Across the census, 664 descriptors — 13.5 per cent — are certified above that line. It is a threshold worth knowing about before you buy rather than after: weight rating is the figure regulators reach for when they decide which registration class, which licence and which operating rules apply to a vehicle, and those rules are set state by state rather than federally. Read the band for the specific truck, then check what your own state does with it.

At the other end, the midsize trucks are lighter than people assume. The Chevrolet Colorado is 80.7 per cent Class 1D — 5,001 to 6,000 pounds — and the Toyota Tacoma splits between Class 1D at 62.8 per cent and Class 1 at 36.7, which is 6,000 pounds or less. A midsize pickup is not a small full-size one. It is a class down, with a ceiling to match, and buyers who scale their expectations from a friend’s half-ton are working from the wrong number.

Engine choice, and the parts of it the number will not settle

Engine is the choice buyers agonise over most and the one the federal record handles best. Displacement, cylinder count and fuel type come back on well over nine in ten descriptors, so a decode will tell you what is in the truck even when the seller is vague, the badges have been swapped, or the listing was copied from another advert.

Within a nameplate the range is wider than most buyers expect. Counting distinct displacements decoded under each name across the twelve model years, the Silverado shows thirteen, the F-150 ten, the GMC Sierra nine, and the RAM 1500 and Chevrolet Colorado eight apiece. A shortlist built on a nameplate is a shortlist containing several quite different trucks, and “I had one of those and it was fine” is weaker evidence than it sounds.

What the decode will not settle is the rest of the specification that decides capability. Rear axle ratio is the classic omission: two trucks built the same week with the same engine and different final drives do different work, and the ratio is frequently not encoded in the VIN at all. Nor is the factory towing package, which usually bundles the cooling and the wiring that make sustained towing survivable. Even transmission style came back on only 12.6 per cent of descriptors in this census, so the gearbox is generally not confirmable either.

The diesel question is its own argument with its own arithmetic and does not belong in a paragraph. Our comparison of diesel and petrol pickups works through the published fuel figures, the maintenance exposure and the point at which the case changes. The short version is that a diesel repays itself through work rather than at the pump, and buying one that will never tow is buying a maintenance liability for a capability you will not use.

What a work truck has been through that a family SUV has not

A pickup is one of the few vehicles routinely bought in order to be damaged. Things are dropped in the bed, dragged across the tailgate, bolted through the floor and left there through ten winters of road salt. That history is legible if you know the marks, and most of them are marks a car cannot have.

The complaint file behind this census gives a rough map of where trouble on pickups gets reported. Across those 127,857 complaints the largest component categories by share of citations were power train at 15.9 per cent, engine at 11.9, steering at 11.1, electrical system at 9, service brakes at 8.7, a catch-all “unknown or other” bucket at 7.3 and suspension at 6. Three per cent of the complaints allege a crash and 1.3 per cent a fire. Treat all of that as a list of places to look rather than a ranking of risk: it counts filings, it has no denominator, and a broad category naturally catches more than a narrow one.

Marks worth reading on the truck itself

  • Holes in the bed floor. A gooseneck ball or a fifth-wheel plate bolts through the floor into the frame crossmembers. Removing it leaves a plate, a set of capped holes, or a patch. That is not a defect, it is a disclosure: the truck pulled something heavy, repeatedly, and the frame, rear suspension and rear axle now deserve a proper look.
  • Holes in the bed rails. Ladder racks and cross-boxes bolt through the rails. Water gets into those holes and works outward under the paint. On a truck from a salted region the underside of a bed rail is where rust starts and the last place a seller cleans.
  • The bed floor itself. Look along it at a low angle in daylight. Ripples between the ribs mean weight has been dropped in. A bed liner hides all of this, which is exactly why it should come out, or at least be lifted at one corner — a drop-in liner traps grit and water against the paint and is a common place to find rot on an otherwise tidy truck.
  • Upfitter wiring. Spliced wiring behind the dash, blanked switches, a hole in the roof where a beacon was mounted, a bracket under the steering column for a plough control. Each one is a former job. Plough work in particular is hard on the front end, the cooling system and the transmission, and it happens in salt.
  • The frame, from behind and underneath. Surface rust on a frame rail is normal. Flaking that leaves layers, or a plate welded over a section, is a different vehicle. So is a rail drilled repeatedly for hitches and body mounts.
  • Whether the bed is the original bed. Beds are replaceable and they do get replaced after damage. Compare paint, panel gaps and the fastener heads at the bed mounts against the cab. A newer bed on an older truck is a question about what happened to the old one.

None of that disqualifies a truck. A pickup that worked was usually specified to work and maintained to keep working, and its folder is often better than the folder on a low-mileage truck that never did anything. The question is not whether it worked. It is what it was doing, and whether the maintenance matched the work.

Two things are worth doing whatever the truck looks like. Check the open recall record against the specific vehicle before you buy: a recall repair is free at a franchised dealer for the life of the truck, and an open campaign on brakes or suspension matters more on a vehicle you intend to load. And get it on a lift — a pre-purchase inspection on a pickup should cover the frame, the rear axle, the transfer case if fitted, the cooling system and the state of the bed mounts, none of which is visible from a driveway.

The order to do it in

Configuration first, because it narrows the market more than anything else and it cannot be fixed later.

Write the job down before you look at anything. What is the heaviest thing you will move, how often, and how far. How many people ride in it regularly. What has to lie flat in the bed. Whether the truck has to fit somewhere specific. Four honest answers eliminate most of the market in an afternoon.

Convert the job into a configuration, not a badge. Cab type, minimum bed length, drivetrain, and a payload requirement expressed as a number of pounds you actually need. That is the specification. Nameplates come after it.

Decode candidates before travelling. The decode will confirm identity, model year, engine, fuel, drive type and the certified weight class band from the manufacturer’s own submissions rather than from the advert, and on most makes it will confirm the cab as well. If any of that disagrees with the listing, the conversation ends and it cost you nothing.

Measure what the decode cannot confirm. Bed length above all, then doors, seat rows and everything bolted to the truck. This is the step the census exists to justify: those facts are absent from the record on the overwhelming majority of pickups, whatever a lookup site prints.

Photograph both labels and weigh the truck. Certification label for the rating and the axle ratings, tyre and loading label for the occupants-and-cargo figure, then a public scale for what it weighs today. The gap between them is your payload, and it belongs to this vehicle rather than to the model.

Read the history against the marks. Open recalls, title record, odometer chain — then the holes, the liner, the frame and the wiring. The paperwork tells you what was reported. The bed floor tells you what happened.

Inspect before you commit. On a truck that has worked, the money is underneath it.

Common questions

Can a VIN tell me what cab and bed a used pickup has?

The cab, usually. The bed, almost never. In this census cab type came back on 87.2 per cent of pickup descriptors, though that ranged from 100 per cent on Ford to zero on Jeep. Bed type came back on 16.5 per cent and only as an adjective; bed length in inches came back on 2.3 per cent. Measure the bed on the truck and do not expect a decode to settle it.

Can I get payload from a VIN?

No. Payload is the gross vehicle weight rating minus what the truck weighs as it stands. The rating came back on 99.7 per cent of descriptors; curb weight came back on 0.8 per cent. Even a correct base curb weight would be the wrong number for a used truck carrying a decade of accessories. The payload figure printed on the tyre and loading label is the right starting point, and a weighbridge gives you the current one.

What does half-ton actually mean on a used truck?

Nothing measurable. It is an inherited nickname for a class of truck, not a rating, and the federal record does not use it. What is recorded is a certified weight class band, and all twenty-two nameplates in this census span more than one band under a single model name. Read the band for the specific vehicle rather than the nickname for the family.

Is a truck that has towed or worked hard a bad buy?

Not by itself. Work is what a pickup is for, and a truck bought to work was usually specified for it and maintained for it. What matters is the match between the work and the maintenance: fluid services at the severe interval, a cooling system in good order, and a frame and rear end that have not been abused. A truck with a gooseneck plate and a thick service folder can be a better purchase than a tidy one with no history at all.

Why can I not compare complaints between cab types on most pickups?

Because the federal product index does not separate them. Cab-specific model entries appear only for Ford, Nissan and RAM across the ten makes and twelve model years we queried. Every other make files its pickups under one model name with the cabs pooled, and where the index does not split a nameplate, no complaint or recall query built on it can split one either.

Does the decode tell me the rear axle ratio or whether it has the towing package?

Usually not, and neither is a field the register publishes for road vehicles the way it publishes displacement. Those are exactly the attributes a manufacturer’s towing tables are indexed by. A franchised dealer can often retrieve the original build record, which is the reliable route; failing that, the axle ratio is sometimes on a tag in the glovebox or stamped on the differential housing.

Should I buy a regular cab, an extended cab or a crew cab?

Whichever matches how the truck is actually used, remembering that cab and bed trade against each other. A crew cab on a given wheelbase means a shorter bed; keeping the long bed means a longer truck. The middle option — two doors and two rows, whatever the maker calls it — gives you covered storage and occasional seats rather than genuine rear-seat accommodation. It is also worth knowing that regular cabs are 7.9 per cent of the descriptors carrying a cab type in this census, so a specific one may take a while to find.

Is the VIN worth checking at all on a pickup, then?

Yes, and nothing here should be read as saying otherwise. The decode confirms identity, model year, engine, fuel, drive type, the certified weight class and, on most makes, the cab — all from the manufacturer’s own submissions, free, before you drive anywhere. What it cannot do is confirm the box on the back or the weight of the truck as it stands. Use it to check the truck is what the advert says, then measure the rest yourself.
