Air bags turn up on more individual vehicles in our recall archive than any other component, and they fail in three opposite directions at once. A campaign count tells you none of that.

The short version

  • Two free federal lookups touch air bags, and they answer different questions. The decode says which air bags the car was built with. The recall lookup says whether any of them is the subject of an unrepaired campaign. Neither says whether the bags are in the car today.
  • The decoder publishes five air bag fields — front, side, curtain, knee and seat cushion — among the 144 variables it defines, plus three more covering pretensioners, belt type and other restraints.
  • Air bags are the component family that turns up on more individual vehicles than any other in our recall archive: 20 of 158 rows, 16 distinct campaigns, 8 makes, and 11 of the 25 vehicles we pulled.
  • They fail in opposite directions, which is why the consequence line matters more than the count. Of those 16 campaigns, 9 describe an inflator that can rupture, 4 describe a bag that may not deploy at all, and 2 describe a bag that can deploy when it should not.
  • Three more campaigns in the same archive are about air bags but are filed under software, a sunroof drain and a missing dashboard label. Filtering on the component name misses them.
  • A clean air bag result is dated, not permanent. One vehicle in the archive collected four air bag campaigns between October 2024 and May 2026, the last one expanding the one before it, and some campaigns are not searchable by VIN for days after they are filed.
  • What no VIN query answers: whether the bags are still fitted, whether a replacement is genuine, whether one has already fired, and whether the warning lamp still works. Those are questions for the car, not the file.

An air bag check by VIN is really two checks that people run as one. The first is a decode, which reads the number itself and reports the restraint equipment the manufacturer certified for that vehicle. The second is a recall lookup, which takes the number to a database and asks whether anyone has since admitted that the restraint equipment is defective. Both are free. Both take about a minute. They are not interchangeable, and confusing them is the reason so many buyers come away with a false sense of what they have established.

This page is built from what is actually in the federal data rather than from what an air bag lookup form implies. We hold an archive of recall files for 25 vehicles, pulled per vehicle from NHTSA, together with the owner complaint files for the same vehicles and a set of decoded VINs. What follows is what those files say about air bags specifically: how often campaigns appear, what shape they take, which ones hide under other headings, and where the record simply stops.

What it adds is everything that is specific to the restraint system, which behaves differently from almost every other thing a recall can be about.

Two lookups, and only one of them is about defects

Start with the split, because it governs everything below.

The decode resolves the 17 characters against the manufacturer’s own submission to the federal register of vehicle information. Restraint equipment is part of that submission because restraint equipment is safety certification, which is what the register exists for. A decode will therefore tell you that a car was certified with frontal air bags for the driver and passenger, side air bags in the first row, curtain air bags across all rows, and so on. It is a description of a specification, filed once, before the vehicle was sold.

The recall lookup does something completely different. It takes the same number to a database of campaigns that manufacturers have filed with the regulator, and returns any that are open against that specific vehicle and not yet remedied. It knows nothing about the specification. It knows about admitted defects.

The practical consequence: a car can decode with a full complement of air bags and carry three open campaigns saying two of them may injure the people they are meant to protect. And a car can come back clean on both and still have had its driver air bag removed after a collision. The decode describes the factory. The recall lookup describes the manufacturer’s conscience. Nothing in either describes the object in front of you.

Note also what neither free lookup covers. The decode reports which air bags the vehicle was certified with, and an empty field there means the agency holds no data on that variable rather than that the equipment is absent. Nothing in either answer says whether the bags are still fitted, whether a replacement is genuine, whether one has already fired, or whether the warning lamp still works. What the decode returns: five air bag fields

The federal decoder publishes 144 named variables. Five of them are air bag location fields, and they sit together in a group the register calls Passive Safety System / Air Bag Location:

  • Front Air Bag Locations — the frontal bags, described by the register as generally designed to deploy in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal crashes.
  • Side Air Bag Locations — typically chest and torso, head, or both.
  • Curtain Air Bag Locations — side bags that protect the head.
  • Knee Air Bag Locations — deployed from the lower dashboard to distribute impact forces.
  • Seat Cushion Air Bag Locations — a supplement to the belt, intended to stop a front passenger sliding forward under it.

Three further fields describe the rest of the restraint system: whether the vehicle has a pretensioner, what type of seat belt it uses, and a free-text field for restraint information that does not fit anywhere else. Eight fields in total, out of 144. It is a more detailed picture than most buyers expect from a decode.

The catch is population. A field existing in the register is a different thing from a field coming back filled for your vehicle. We hold four archived decodes of real numbers, and the pattern in them is consistent enough to be worth stating plainly. The frontal field was populated on all 4. The side field was populated on all 4. The curtain field came back on 2 of the 4. The knee field came back on 2 of the 4. The seat cushion field came back on none of them.

The two decodes carrying curtain and knee values were the newer vehicles, a 2016 saloon and a 2018 saloon. The two returning blanks were a 2013 pickup and a 2015 SUV. That is the shape of the whole vPIC dataset in miniature: manufacturers submit more detail as the years pass, and older vehicles carry less.

Which brings us to the single most misread thing about an air bag decode. A blank field does not mean the car has no such air bag. The decoder says so itself, in the note attached to every response: a missing value “should NOT be interpreted as an indication that a feature or technology is unavailable”. It means the agency does not hold data on that variable for that vehicle. A 2013 pickup with an empty curtain field almost certainly has curtain air bags. The register simply was not told.

So the decode is decisive in one direction only. A populated field is evidence the equipment was certified. An empty field is evidence of nothing at all. If you need to know whether a specific car has curtain air bags, the decode is a weak instrument and the door aperture label, the window sticker and your own eyes are better ones.

What the recall lookup returns, and how often it returns something

The recall half is where the useful answers are, and the volume is higher than most people assume.

Our archive holds 25 vehicle recall files, returning 158 rows and 145 distinct campaigns across 24 manufacturers and 80 distinct component paths. Grouped by the head of the component path, air bags produced 16 distinct campaigns affecting 8 different makes. On raw rows — that is, campaign appearances against individual vehicles — air bags returned 20, more than any other family in the set. Seat belts added a further 9 campaigns, so restraints together account for 25 of the 145.

Eleven of the 25 vehicles carried at least one air bag campaign. That is not a majority, and it is worth saying so: this is a common recall subject, not a universal one. The 2018 Ford F-150 in our set carries 19 campaigns, the highest count in the archive, and not one of them is filed under air bags. The 2018 Toyota Camry carries 8, none of them air bags either.

One thing air bag campaigns are consistently not is flagged for urgency. The archive contains exactly one Do Not Drive campaign and no Park Outside campaigns at all, and the Do Not Drive one is a brake defect. Two campaigns were remediable over the air, and neither concerns restraints — which stands to reason, since nothing about a ruptured inflator can be fixed by a software update. Every air bag remedy in the archive involves a dealer physically replacing or repairing hardware.

Do not read the absence of a severity flag as reassurance. The consequence text on these campaigns is as blunt as anything in the federal record. One BMW campaign describes an inflator explosion sending sharp metal fragments at the driver, with injury or death as the stated outcome. It carries no urgency flag. The flags mark a narrow set of circumstances; the consequence line is where the actual severity lives.

Three opposite ways an air bag fails

Here is the part that makes air bags different from every other recall subject, and the reason a count is close to useless on this component.

A brake recall is about brakes not stopping the car. A fuel pump recall is about the pump not delivering fuel. The failure has one direction. An air bag campaign can point in three directions at once, and the three carry entirely different meanings for a buyer.

The bag hurts you when it fires

This is the inflator rupture family, and it is the largest: 9 of the 16 air bag campaigns in the archive. The language is standardised across manufacturers because the physics is. A separated end cap or a ruptured inflator lets compressed gas escape, propelling the cap or fragments of the housing into the cabin. One Chrysler campaign puts it as an inflator rupture that may result in sharp metal fragments striking occupants. A General Motors campaign covering side curtain modules uses almost identical wording.

Note what that means. The bag works. It deploys when the sensors call for it. The defect is that the device that inflates it can come apart while doing so, converting a safety system into a source of shrapnel at exactly the moment the occupant is least able to avoid it. This is why inflator campaigns are the ones that stay open for years and get expanded repeatedly, and why parts supply on them is chronically constrained.

The bag does not fire at all

Four campaigns in the archive describe non-deployment. Two Land Rover campaigns, filed ten weeks apart across the turn of 2016 into 2017, both concern the front passenger inflator module: one says the bag may not deploy as required in a crash of sufficient severity, the other says the inflator initiator may fail to ignite. Two Porsche campaigns concern the passenger occupant detection system, where an undetected passenger means the bag is switched off when it is needed.

A non-deployment defect is invisible in every way that matters. There is no warning, no symptom, no noise, nothing to feel on a test drive. The car behaves identically until the day it does not. It is the strongest single argument for running the lookup rather than assuming, because it is the failure mode that no inspection, however competent, is going to find.

The bag fires when it should not

Two campaigns describe unintended deployment. A Mercedes-Benz campaign appearing on two different models in our set concerns a driver air bag that can deploy inadvertently, with the remedy being to add grounding to the steering components — a reminder that an air bag is an electrically triggered device and behaves like one. A 2026 Honda campaign concerning seat weight sensors describes bags that deploy unintentionally during a crash.

A single further campaign, on a General Motors vehicle, is filed on the occupant classification sensor and describes improper deployment without specifying a direction. Nine, four, two and one: that is 16, and it is a far more informative summary of the vehicle’s restraint record than the number 16 on its own.

The seat sensor, and the light that says the passenger bag is off

One sub-family deserves separating out, because it accounts for a disproportionate share of what owners actually experience and because it is the one most often dismissed as an electrical annoyance.

Four of the 16 campaigns concern the occupant classification system — the sensor arrangement in the front passenger seat that decides whether somebody is sitting there and, if so, whether they are large enough for a full-force deployment. Two Porsche campaigns, four years apart, both resolve to the same remedy: replace the sensor mat and the seat cushion. A General Motors campaign replaces a passenger presence seat service kit. A Honda campaign replaces seat weight sensors.

The earlier of the two Porsche campaigns is worth reading closely because of how it is framed. The manufacturer states that the passenger occupant detection sensor mat may fail, deactivating the front passenger air bag, and that as a result the vehicles fail to comply with the federal occupant crash protection standard. That is not a discretionary goodwill action. It is a declared compliance failure against the standard that requires the restraint system to work in the first place.

For a buyer, the seat sensor is the one air bag defect with a visible symptom. Most cars display a passenger air bag status indicator, and a sensor fault frequently shows up as the passenger bag reading as switched off with an adult sitting in the seat, or the restraint warning lamp staying lit. That is the good news. The bad news is that the same symptom is produced by a heavy bag on the seat, an aftermarket seat cover interfering with the mat, and a wiring connector under the seat that somebody knocked while vacuuming. A lit lamp is a reason to run the VIN, not a diagnosis.

Air bag campaigns that are not filed under air bags

If you filter a recall result on the component name, you will miss campaigns. We know this because it happens three times in an archive of 145.

The first is an Audi campaign from January 2017, and it is the most instructive defect in the whole set. It is filed under visibility, sunroof and moonroof assembly. The summary explains that the sunroof drainage system may allow water to soak into the foam surrounding the side head air bag inflator canister, corroding the canister, weakening it, and allowing the inflator to fracture without the bag deploying at all — propelling fragments into the passenger compartment. The remedy is to remove the surrounding foam and inspect the inflator, coating or replacing it as necessary.

Read that again in the context of a used car purchase. A blocked drain is a maintenance triviality. Water in a footwell is a used-car commonplace. Here they are the front end of a chain that terminates in a metal canister failing structurally next to an occupant’s head. It is the clearest evidence in our data that water intrusion is a restraint-system issue as well as an upholstery one, which is part of why our page on flood damage checks by VIN treats a wet car as a structural problem rather than a cosmetic one.

The second is a Mercedes-Benz campaign from March 2017, filed under electrical system and software, where control units may have been programmed with incorrect software potentially affecting correct deployment of the air bags. The word air bag appears nowhere in the component path.

The third is a Ford campaign from November 2024, filed under equipment, other, labels. The air bag warning label may be missing from the dashboard, which is itself a compliance failure against the occupant crash protection standard. The remedy is that the manufacturer will post the labels to owners. It is the least alarming air bag recall imaginable and it is still an air bag recall — and it sits on the same F-150 that returns nothing at all if you filter its 19 campaigns on the air bag component.

The lesson is procedural. When you run a VIN, read every campaign the lookup returns rather than scanning for the word you came for. Three of the 19 air bag campaigns in this archive are invisible to a reader who does that.

A clean result is a clean result today

The most consequential property of an air bag check is that its answer expires, and this component demonstrates the point better than any other.

Take the General Motors pickup in our archive. It picked up an air bag campaign in October 2024, filed on the side curtain inflator, with a remedy replacing the left and right modules. In June 2025 it picked up a second, with the same remedy. In March 2026 a third. In May 2026 a fourth, and the notice for that one states explicitly that it expands the campaign filed two months earlier. Four campaigns, one component, nineteen months. A buyer who ran that VIN in November 2024 and found the first campaign, had it remedied, and considered the matter closed would have been wrong three times over by the following spring.

The same pattern appears on a Honda campaign filed in May 2026, which states that it expands an earlier campaign filed in 2024, and lists sixteen separate internal recall codes under one federal campaign number. Inflator populations get re-cut as testing continues. A vehicle that was outside the affected batch in one campaign can be inside the next.

There is a second, shorter-lived gap worth knowing about. A campaign is filed with the regulator on one date and becomes searchable against individual VINs on another, and the remedy text sometimes says so. One Chrysler curtain inflator campaign filed on 11 September 2025 records that the affected numbers would be searchable from 18 September, a week later. The Honda campaign filed on 21 May 2026 records a searchable date of 29 May, eight days later. Two General Motors campaigns became searchable the same day they were filed. The widest gap in the whole archive, on a pair of non-restraint campaigns filed in June 2026, is 27 days.

So a clean VIN result carries an invisible caveat: it is clean as against the campaigns whose vehicle lists have been loaded. If you have seen a news report about an air bag campaign on your model and your VIN comes back clean, the honest reading is not necessarily that your car is excluded. It may be that the list has not landed yet. Run it again in a fortnight.

What owners report, and no campaign records

Alongside the recall archive we hold the owner complaint files for the same vehicles, and they are a useful corrective — with one hard limitation that matters specifically for a VIN check.

Across the complaint files that parse, 236 complaints name the air bags among the components involved. Of those, 78 describe a warning light, 49 describe a bag that did not deploy, 66 are flagged as involving a crash, and 71 injuries and one death are recorded. The death was reported not by an owner but by a police vehicular homicide investigator following a fatal collision, which is itself a fact about who files these reports and why the file is not a simple owner survey.

Twenty-two of the 24 files that parse contain at least one air bag complaint. One file — the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu — is truncated in our archive and does not parse at all, so it is excluded from every figure on this page rather than counted as a zero.

The single sharpest illustration in the data is the 2018 Nissan Altima. Its owners filed 35 air bag complaints out of 224 complaints in total, the second-highest air bag count in the archive. Its recall file contains exactly two campaigns: a hood latch and a rear camera. Nothing about air bags at all. A recall lookup on that VIN returns silence on the subject its owners complained about most.

The 2016 Porsche in our set runs the other way: 13 of its 29 complaints concern air bags, the highest share in the archive, and the manufacturer did file two campaigns on the seat sensor. The 2018 Honda saloon collected 58 air bag complaints against 1838 complaints overall, and its air bag campaign arrived in 2026.

Now the limitation. Every complaint in the archive that carries a VIN at all carries only 11 characters of one — 232 of the 236 air bag complaints, with 4 carrying none. Eleven characters gets you the manufacturer, the descriptor block, the check digit, the model year and the plant. It stops one character before the serial. That is deliberate, and the effect is absolute: you cannot look up complaints for your individual car. You can only look up complaints for cars like yours. Any tool that claims to show you the complaint history of a specific vehicle is showing you its year, make and model file.

One more absence worth recording. Owners name the inflator supplier constantly — 35 complaints in the archive mention one supplier by name, spread across 12 different vehicle files. The recall records in the same archive never name it once. Campaigns are filed by the vehicle manufacturer against the vehicle, not by or against the component supplier. Searching for a supplier name will not tell you whether your car is affected. Only the number will.

The four things a VIN will not tell you about an air bag

Everything above is what the two lookups do return. This is where they stop, and on this component the stopping point is unusually consequential.

Whether the air bags are still in the car. There is no federal field for the presence of a restraint module. A decode reports what was certified at the factory, and a recall lookup reports campaigns. Neither is updated when a module leaves the vehicle. A car that has had a front-end collision, been repaired cheaply, and gone back on the road with an empty steering wheel boss decodes exactly like one that has not.

Whether a replacement is genuine and correctly installed. Following a deployment, the bags, the inflators, often the control module and sometimes the seat belt pretensioners all have to be replaced. That work is invisible to every VIN query. Our archive contains no complaint describing a counterfeit or stolen module, which is a statement about the reach of this dataset and not about how often it happens — owner complaints are filed about things owners notice, and a substandard replacement is specifically a thing owners do not notice.

Whether the bags have already fired. A deployment writes a record inside the vehicle, in the module that decides when to fire. That is the event data recorder, and reading it requires a specialist tool and a physical connection to the car; our page on what an event data recorder actually holds sets out what it stores and who is entitled to read it. Nothing about it is available from a VIN in advance of a purchase. A deployment reaches a searchable record only indirectly, if an insurer paid a claim large enough to be reported, which is the subject of our page on accident checks by VIN and its central finding: below the total-loss threshold, a collision can leave no searchable trace anywhere.

Whether the warning lamp still works. The restraint warning lamp is the system’s only self-report, and it is trivially defeated. A lamp that has been disconnected or removed from the cluster reports a healthy system permanently. No database anywhere records that this has been done.

Put together, those four gaps mean the honest summary of an air bag check by VIN is narrow and worth stating precisely: it tells you whether the manufacturer has admitted a defect in the restraint system this vehicle was built with, and whether that admission is outstanding. That is genuinely valuable, it is free, and it is not the same as knowing the air bags will work.

Reading the car instead of the file

The gaps above close only by inspection, and most of the useful checks cost nothing but attention.

Watch the restraint warning lamp when the ignition is switched on. It is supposed to illuminate for a self-check and then go out. Two outcomes are findings: a lamp that stays lit, and a lamp that never lights at all. The second is the one people miss, because a car with no warning light looks like a car with no fault.

Look at the covers. The driver bag lives in the steering wheel centre, the passenger bag behind a dashboard panel, and both have moulded tear seams designed to split in a precise way. Panels that sit slightly proud, gaps that do not match the other side, fastener heads that have been marked, a steering wheel centre whose grain or colour is a shade off the rest of the wheel — all are worth a question. Side and curtain bags live in the seat bolsters and along the roof rail above the doors, usually marked with a moulded tag; a roof lining that has been disturbed near that tag is worth the same question.

Sit in the passenger seat and watch the passenger air bag status indicator, if the car has one. It should acknowledge an adult occupant. Do it with the seat empty as well, and with a bag on the seat, so you know what the car does normally.

Then ask the seller directly whether the car has been in a collision and whether any restraint work was done, and ask for the invoice. A straight answer with paperwork is worth more than any database result. An evasive answer on this specific question is worth walking away over, because it is the one repair where the consequence of a bad job is measured in injuries rather than money.

Finally, if the car matters to you, have the restraint system fault codes read as part of a pre-purchase inspection. A scan tool talks to the restraint control module and reports stored faults, including many that no longer illuminate the lamp. It is the only check on this list that reaches inside the system, and it costs a fraction of one deployed module.

The order to do this in

Five steps, in this order, because each one is capable of ending the exercise before you spend money on the next.

Read the number off the car rather than the advert — the plate at the base of the windscreen and the label in the driver’s door aperture — and check that the two agree.

Decode it, and read the restraint fields for what they are: confirmation of what was certified, with blanks meaning nothing.

Run the free federal recall lookup, and read every campaign it returns rather than searching the results for the words air bag. Three campaigns in our archive would be missed by anyone who did.

Run the manufacturer’s own VIN lookup as a second pass, and if a campaign you have heard about does not appear, run it again a week or two later. Vehicle lists load after campaigns are filed, sometimes by several weeks.

Then inspect the car for the four things the lookups cannot answer, and pay somebody to read the restraint module if the purchase is worth it. That last step is the only one on this page that tells you anything about the air bags in the car you are actually buying.

Common questions

Can I check air bag recalls by VIN for free?

Yes, and there is no reason to pay for it. The federal recall lookup takes the 17-character number, requires no account, and returns unrepaired campaigns reported by the manufacturer for that specific vehicle. Most manufacturers also run their own VIN lookup, and running both is worthwhile because the two are populated from different sides of the same reporting process.

Does a VIN check show whether the air bags have been deployed?

No. There is no deployment field in any VIN query. Deployment is recorded inside the vehicle, in the module that fires the bags, and reading it needs a tool and physical access to the car. A past deployment reaches a searchable record only if it produced an insurance claim or a title brand large enough to be reported, and plenty of collisions do neither.

Does the decode tell me how many air bags a car has?

Not a count, but a set of locations. The decoder publishes five air bag location fields — front, side, curtain, knee and seat cushion — and each returns a description such as first row, or first and second rows, or all rows. In our four archived decodes the front and side fields came back on all four, the curtain and knee fields on two, and the seat cushion field on none. An empty field means the agency has no data on that variable, not that the equipment is absent.

My VIN comes back clean for air bag recalls. Is the car safe?

It means no unrepaired air bag campaign is currently recorded against it, which is a real and useful result. It does not mean the bags are present, genuine, undeployed or functional, and it does not mean a campaign will not be filed next year. In our archive one vehicle collected four air bag campaigns on the same component in nineteen months, the last expanding the one before it.

How urgent is an open air bag recall?

Read the consequence line rather than looking for a flag. Air bag campaigns in our archive carry no urgency flags at all, yet their consequence text describes inflators exploding and metal fragments striking occupants. The severity flags cover a narrow set of circumstances; they are not a ranking of how badly a defect can hurt you.

The air bag warning light is on. Will the VIN tell me why?

Sometimes it points at the answer. Four of the 16 air bag campaigns in our archive concern the seat occupant sensor, which is a common cause of a lit restraint lamp or a passenger bag reading as switched off. But the same symptom comes from wiring, connectors, seat covers and ordinary faults that no campaign covers. Run the VIN first because it is free, then have the fault codes read.

Are all air bag recalls about exploding inflators?

No, and treating them as though they are hides the most dangerous ones.
