Caterpillar VIN Lookup: The Federal Register Holds No Caterpillar Codes
Ask the federal register for Caterpillar's manufacturer codes and it returns zero. Ask it for "CAT" and it returns 491 rows, none of them Caterpillar. The absence is the answer.

The short version
- The federal VIN register holds no Caterpillar codes at all. Ask NHTSA’s vPIC database for the world manufacturer identifiers registered to CATERPILLAR and it returns a count of zero and an empty result set. Ask under the company’s own registered manufacturer number instead and it returns zero again.
- The three letters CAT are not a registered prefix either. Submit CAT to the register’s prefix decoder and nothing comes back.
- Search the register for the string CAT and you get 491 rows, none of which belong to Caterpillar. They are trailer builders, custom motorcycle shops and fabricators whose company names happen to contain those three letters — 468 filed as Trailer, 15 as Motorcycle.
- Feed a Caterpillar-shaped machine serial to the federal decoder and it returns errors instead of a machine, and the wording is explicit: the manufacturer is not registered with NHTSA for use on U.S. roads.
- That absence is the answer, not a gap in the data. An excavator, a dozer, a wheel loader or a skid steer is not a motor vehicle under the federal scheme, so it carries a product identification number issued by its maker rather than a VIN issued under the federal standard.
- Caterpillar does appear in vPIC in two other places: as a registered vehicle manufacturer based in Deerfield, Illinois, and as a make carrying 21 models. Both entries exist because of the on-highway trucks the company once sold, not because of the machines.
- Those trucks are the exception. NHTSA’s recall database holds five Caterpillar campaigns, all against CT660-family trucks in model years 2012 to 2016, and two of the campaign texts name Navistar as the builder.
- The same absence covers the rest of the yard. Kubota, Komatsu, JCB, New Holland, Yanmar and Takeuchi all return zero codes. John Deere returns exactly one and Bobcat exactly one, and neither is the thing a machine buyer is looking for.
- So there is no federal file to pull on a used machine. The checks that replace it are a plate reading, the dealer’s own service record against the serial, and a lien search — none of which is a VIN lookup.
Type “caterpillar VIN lookup” into a search box and you will be offered input fields. Most of them imply that somewhere behind the box is a database that turns a Caterpillar serial into a machine history the way a car VIN turns into a title chain. For road vehicles that database exists, it is federal, and it is free. For the yellow machines it does not exist, and this page is about establishing that clearly enough that nobody wastes an afternoon on it.
We did the obvious thing first. NHTSA runs a public register called vPIC, and one of its endpoints returns every world manufacturer identifier filed under a given company name. It is the same endpoint behind every make page on this site. Asked for CATERPILLAR, it answers with a count of zero and an empty list. Asked for CATERPILLAR INC, the same. Asked for the fragment ATERPILLAR, so that a filing under a slightly different corporate style would still be caught, the same again.
Then we asked the harder way. Caterpillar Inc. does hold a manufacturer registration in vPIC, with its own internal identifier, and the register will return codes by that identifier as well as by name. Asked that way, the answer is still zero. There is no combination of query that produces a Caterpillar manufacturer prefix, because there is no Caterpillar manufacturer prefix to produce.
Why the register is empty, and why that is the correct answer
The seventeen-character vehicle identification number is a federal construct. Its content is fixed by regulation — the layout, the character set, the arithmetic behind the check digit at position 9 — and it applies to motor vehicles built or imported for use on public roads in the United States. The scheme has a boundary, and construction equipment sits outside it. A tracked excavator does not drive on the highway, is not certified to the federal motor vehicle safety standards, and is not registered or titled by a state motor vehicle department in the way a pickup is. Nothing in the federal apparatus that produces VINs has any reason to reach it, and so it does not.
What such a machine carries instead is a product identification number issued by its manufacturer under the manufacturer’s own scheme, stamped or plated on the machine and repeated on major components. It looks superficially like a VIN — on modern machines it is often seventeen characters, which is exactly why the confusion is so persistent — but it is a private identifier in a private numbering system, not a public one. Nobody at a federal agency assigned it, nobody at a federal agency records it, and no federal endpoint will resolve it. The distinction is the same one our page on chassis numbers and VINs draws for road vehicles, with the gap opened much wider.
This is worth saying in the plainest possible terms, because the alternative framing does real damage. A site that returns a result for a Caterpillar serial is not reading a federal register; it is either pattern-matching against a scraped list, guessing from the model prefix, or selling a report whose contents it has not described. An honest empty answer beats a confident invented one, and on this topic the honest answer is that the federal register holds nothing.
Searching for CAT returns 491 rows and none of them are Caterpillar
There is a trap here that catches people who do run the query themselves, and it is worth walking through because the result looks like a discovery.
The register’s name endpoint matches company names as text rather than as exact identities. Ask it for CAT and it does not ask itself whether you meant Caterpillar. It returns every registrant whose legal name contains those three letters in that order, anywhere. The result is 491 rows.
Read the rows and the illusion collapses immediately. The single largest group is fabricators: company names containing FABRICATION and FABRICATORS carry a hidden CAT and match on it. So do names containing DUCATI. So does a company with CARTER’S in the name. By vehicle class, 468 of the 491 are filed as Trailer, 15 as Motorcycle, 4 as Low Speed Vehicle, 2 as Truck, one as Incomplete Vehicle and one as Off-Road Vehicle. By country, 440 are United States entries, 42 record no country at all, 3 are Canadian, 2 Chinese, one Italian and one Thai.
The shape of the codes gives it away as well. Only 32 of the 491 are three-character prefixes of the kind a large manufacturer holds. The other 459 are six-character codes, which the register issues to small-volume builders — the trailer shops and one-off motorcycle assemblers that make up the bulk of that list. A company of Caterpillar’s size would not be in that population even if it were in the register at all.
We checked every one of the 491 for the string CATERPILLAR. There are no matches. Whatever a page claiming to have found “Caterpillar WMI codes” is showing you, it is not this register, and if it is this register then it has failed to filter the very false positives the query is famous for. What the federal decoder actually says when you paste a machine serial into it
The decoder does not fail silently, and the way it fails is more informative than most articles on this subject manage to be.
We built a serial in the shape Caterpillar uses — three letters, then a model group, then a plant and sequence block, seventeen characters in total — and submitted it to vPIC’s decode endpoint. The make came back empty, the model came back empty, the model year came back empty, and three error codes came back populated: 1, 7 and 400.
Error 1 is the check digit. Position 9 of a VIN is not a free character; it is computed from the other sixteen under a fixed weighting and modulus, and a manufacturer’s own serial has no reason to satisfy that arithmetic. It did not. Anyone can run the same test on a number they hold, and our VIN guide explains the calculation.
Error 400 is invalid characters, and the detail the API returns is precise: the character at position 9 is a letter, and a letter cannot sit at position 9 of a VIN. The VIN character set also excludes I, O and Q entirely, because they are too easily confused with 1 and 0. A machine serial is under no such constraint, so the collision is structural rather than a matter of bad luck.
Error 7 is the one that settles the argument. Its published text says the manufacturer is not registered with NHTSA for sale or importation in the United States for use on U.S. roads, and refers the user to the manufacturer directly. That is the federal decoder telling you, in its own words, that this object is outside its jurisdiction and that the company that built it is the only party who can identify it.
We tried the shorter serial format too — the eight-character form on older machines — and got errors 6, 7 and 11: incomplete VIN, the same manufacturer message, and an invalid model-year character at position 10. Three attempts, three refusals, and the refusals are consistent. This is not a decoder that has a Caterpillar record and cannot find it. It is a decoder that has no such record and says so.
Where Caterpillar does appear in vPIC, and why
It would be wrong to say Caterpillar is absent from the federal vehicle data altogether. It appears twice, and both appearances are about trucks.
The first is the manufacturer register. Query vPIC for manufacturer details under the name and one record comes back: CATERPILLAR INC., registered at an address in Deerfield, Illinois, in the United States. The record carries four manufacturer types — completed vehicle manufacturer, incomplete vehicle manufacturer, final-stage vehicle manufacturer and vehicle alterer — and one vehicle type marked as primary, which is Truck, at the heaviest gross weight class the register uses. The registration was submitted by somebody whose stated job title is on-highway compliance, which tells you everything about which part of the business the filing covers.
The second is the makes and models table. vPIC recognises CATERPILLAR as a make, and lists 21 models under it. Two of them read as truck names: CT630S and CT660L. The rest are short alphanumeric designations of the kind manufacturers use for configuration families. One of the 21 is simply the word Caterpillar. Pull the models year by year and the two truck names appear only in the 2014 and 2015 lists, which is a narrow window for a company that has been building machines for a century.
The make also carries four vehicle types: Truck, Bus, Incomplete Vehicle and Off-Road Vehicle. Counted against the register’s own make lists, Caterpillar is one of 207 truck makes, one of 132 bus makes, one of 125 incomplete-vehicle makes and one of 27 off-road-vehicle makes.
That last figure is the seductive one, and it is worth being careful about. Caterpillar being listed as an off-road-vehicle make does not mean the register knows anything about excavators. The off-road list is a short one — 27 makes, sitting alongside entries such as Arctic Cat — and being on it is a classification, not a data holding. The register can tell you that a make is associated with that class. It holds no manufacturer prefix for the make, which means it cannot resolve a single serial number belonging to it. A category label without a code behind it decodes nothing.
The on-highway trucks, and the recalls that prove they were real vehicles
Between the manufacturer registration and the model list, there is one Caterpillar product family that genuinely lived inside the federal motor vehicle system, and its footprint is in the recall database rather than the VIN register.
NHTSA’s recall service holds five distinct Caterpillar campaigns, spanning model years 2012 to 2016 and all filed against CT660-family trucks. In order of the date NHTSA received each report:
Campaign 12V051000, received in February 2012, covered model year 2012 and 2013 CT660 commercial trucks fitted with Bendix ATR-6 traction relay valves, which could develop internal leakage in extreme cold and misdeliver air pressure to a brake.
Campaign 13V072000, received in March 2013, is the one worth reading twice. It covers 2012 and 2014 CT660 heavy duty trucks and describes them, in NHTSA’s own summary, as manufactured by Navistar. Side marker lamps or reflective tape had not been applied to vehicles 30 feet or longer, putting them out of conformity with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108.
Campaign 14V068000, received in February 2014, covered model year 2012 and 2013 CT660 trucks whose brake S-cam brackets could fracture, which would leave an inoperative brake on the affected wheel.
Campaign 14V814000, received in December 2014, covered model year 2015 trucks that could suffer brake drag from an improperly seated diaphragm in the brake chamber.
Campaign 17V641000, received in October 2017, covered 2016 trucks with certain Spicer steer axles whose castellated nut might not have been properly torqued, allowing a tie rod to loosen. NHTSA’s summary calls them Navistar trucks outright.
Two things follow from that list. The first is that these trucks were ordinary federally regulated motor vehicles with ordinary VINs, ordinary recall exposure and ordinary title records — Caterpillar is one of 386 makes with at least one open or historical campaign against a 2013 model year vehicle. The second is that the badge and the builder were different parties, which is a normal arrangement in heavy trucks and one our page on International truck VIN lookups covers from the other side. If you are looking at one of these trucks rather than a machine, you are in the ordinary world and everything on this site applies to you.
Kubota, Komatsu, Deere, Bobcat: the same absence, with two odd exceptions
Caterpillar is not a special case, and checking the neighbours makes that obvious rather than leaving it as an assertion.
Kubota, Komatsu, JCB, New Holland, Yanmar, Takeuchi, Hitachi and Case all return a count of zero from the manufacturer-prefix endpoint. Kubota is the interesting near-miss: it exists in vPIC’s makes table, so a decoder’s make dropdown may well offer it, but it holds no manufacturer prefix and no models — a name with nothing behind it. Komatsu, JCB, Yanmar, Takeuchi and New Holland are not in the makes table at all.
Two names do return something, and both of them are instructive about how narrow the road-vehicle boundary is.
John Deere returns exactly one code: 17N, filed under the name John Deere Waterloo Works, country United States, opened in September 2016, and classified as Incomplete Vehicle. One code, one plant name, one class. It is not a tractor decoder; it is a single filing covering product that enters the road-vehicle system as an incomplete chassis for someone else to finish.
Bobcat returns exactly one code as well: 4FV, filed under Doosan Bobcat North America, opened in June 2015, and classified as Trailer. A trailer. Whatever a buyer wanting to check a skid-steer loader hoped that entry would be, it is a trailer filing. And searching the makes table for Bobcat returns a company called Bobcat Trailer Company, which is a different business entirely and a good illustration of why name matching is dangerous.
So across the major equipment brands, the federal register holds one incomplete-vehicle filing, one trailer filing, and nothing else. There is no construction-equipment corner of vPIC waiting to be found.
What to check instead, when there is no federal file
Losing the federal record is a genuine loss, and it is worth being precise about what you lose rather than pretending a substitute exists.
On a road vehicle, three federal or federally fed resources do most of the work: the recall lookup, the theft check, and the state title history that records brands, ownership transfers and odometer readings. On a machine, all three are gone. There is no title system to brand. There is no odometer disclosure regime. There is no per-serial recall endpoint either: NHTSA’s recall lookup works from a VIN, and a machine has no VIN to give it.
What replaces them is slower and more manual, and it starts with the machine itself.
Read the plate, and read every plate. A machine carries its identification on a plate or a stamping, and major components frequently carry their own separate numbers. Read them yourself rather than accepting the number from a listing, photograph each one, and note whether they are consistent with each other and with the machine’s apparent age and configuration. A plate that looks newer than the metal around it, or fixings that have been disturbed, is a finding rather than a curiosity. We are not going to publish a diagram of where a given manufacturer puts its plate, because we have no federal source for that and we are not in the business of guessing at manufacturer practice; the manufacturer’s own documentation and its dealers do know.
Take the serial to the dealer network. This is the single most valuable step, and it is the one the error message from the federal decoder was pointing at. The manufacturer and its authorised dealers hold the build record and, where the machine has been serviced in the network, a service history against that serial. That is the closest thing to a history report that exists for equipment, and unlike a scraped database it is authoritative because it is the source. Ask what the build record says the machine left the factory as, and compare that against what is in front of you.
Search for liens against the serial. Financed equipment is normally secured, and security interests in equipment are recorded in a state filing system that indexes by debtor and can be searched against a described collateral item. This is the check that most closely replaces the lien question a title record answers on a car, and skipping it is how buyers end up owning a machine somebody else’s lender can claim. It is a state-level search and it is not free of effort, but it is the one that carries real money.
Establish hours, not miles. A machine’s wear is measured in engine hours, the meter is not covered by the odometer disclosure rules that govern cars, and an hour meter can be replaced along with a dash. Treat a stated hour reading as a claim to be corroborated by service records and by the physical condition of wear items, in the same spirit as our warnings about mileage on road vehicles.
Have it inspected by somebody who works on that class of machine. Undercarriage, hydraulics, final drives and structural welds are where the money is, and none of them is legible from a photograph or a serial number. This is the equivalent of a pre-purchase inspection on a car, with a larger downside if it is skipped.
If it is one of the trucks, the ordinary sequence applies
Everything above is about machines. If the Caterpillar in front of you is a CT660-family highway truck, you are looking at a federally regulated motor vehicle and you should be running the full sequence rather than any of the equipment workarounds.
Read the number off the vehicle, from the plate and from the certification label, and check that the two agree. Validate the check digit before you do anything else, because a mistyped number fails arithmetically before it costs you a journey. Decode it and confirm the model and the model year come back as advertised. Run the free recall lookup and the free theft check.
Then buy the record. Title history on a commercial truck answers the questions that matter most in that market — which states it has been titled in, in what order, with what readings, and whether any brand has ever attached — and it is retrieved from state data rather than decoded from the number. A full title and brand report against the number is the right purchase at that point, and it is worth reading the chain rather than the headline. This is one of the few places on this page where money buys you something a free federal endpoint cannot.
Selling a machine, or a truck
The same asymmetry works in a seller’s favour if you use it.
On a machine, the absence of a public record means a buyer has no way to reassure themselves at a distance. That makes documentation unusually valuable. Publish the serial. Publish the service history you hold, especially anything from the dealer network against that serial. Publish the hour meter reading and say plainly whether the meter is original. Photograph the identification plate clearly enough to read. A seller who supplies all of that has removed the buyer’s main reason to discount, and there is no report the buyer can pull that would have supplied it instead.
On a truck, do what a careful car seller does: print the VIN in the listing, pull the title history yourself, and lead with a clean chain if you have one. Buyers who check are the buyers who pay properly.
Common questions
Is there a free Caterpillar VIN decoder?
Not a federal one, because there is nothing for it to decode. NHTSA’s vPIC register returns a count of zero for Caterpillar manufacturer prefixes, and its decoder rejects a Caterpillar-shaped serial with an error saying the manufacturer is not registered for use on U.S. roads. Any site returning a detailed result for a machine serial is not reading that register.
What are Caterpillar’s WMI codes?
It has none in the federal register. Queried by company name, by name fragment and by its own registered manufacturer identifier, vPIC returns zero world manufacturer identifiers. The prefix CAT is not registered either — submitting it to the register’s prefix decoder returns nothing.
Then why do some sites list Caterpillar WMI codes?
Usually because they searched the register for the string CAT and printed what came back without filtering it. That query returns 491 rows and not one of them is Caterpillar; they are companies whose names contain those letters, mostly trailer fabricators, with 468 of the 491 filed as Trailer and 459 of them holding the six-character codes issued to small-volume builders.
Does a Caterpillar machine have a VIN at all?
It has a product identification number issued by the manufacturer, which is a different thing wearing similar clothes. On modern machines it is often seventeen characters, which is why it gets mistaken for a VIN, but it is not built to the federal VIN rules — it does not carry a valid check digit at position 9, and it can use characters a VIN is forbidden to use. Only the manufacturer and its dealers can resolve it.
Can I check a Caterpillar excavator for recalls by serial number?
Not through NHTSA’s vehicle recall lookup, which works from a VIN and covers motor vehicles — a machine has no VIN to enter. The practical step is to give the serial to an authorised dealer and ask what campaigns and product improvement programmes are outstanding against it.
Why does Caterpillar appear in the NHTSA recall database then?
Because of the on-highway trucks. Five campaigns are on file, covering CT660-family trucks in model years 2012 to 2016, against brakes, exterior lighting, the parking brake and a steering tie rod. Two of the campaign summaries name Navistar as the manufacturer of the trucks. Those vehicles are inside the motor vehicle system in a way the machines are not.
Does Kubota or Komatsu have VIN codes?
No. Kubota, Komatsu, JCB, New Holland, Yanmar, Takeuchi, Hitachi and Case all return zero manufacturer prefixes. Kubota is listed as a make in the register but holds no codes and no models behind the name. John Deere holds one code, filed as an incomplete vehicle by its Waterloo works, and Bobcat holds one, filed as a trailer.
What is the best way to check a used machine’s history?
Take the serial to the manufacturer’s dealer network for the build and service record, search your state’s secured-transactions filings for a lien against the equipment, corroborate the hour meter against service records and physical wear, and have the machine inspected by someone who works on that class of equipment. There is no report to buy that substitutes for those four steps.
Is a Caterpillar serial the same as a chassis number?
They belong to the same family of ideas — a manufacturer’s own identifier for a specific unit — and neither is automatically a VIN.
