8 of the 8 variables checked here are published by NHTSA’s decoder, so this question genuinely can be answered from the seventeen characters. Whether any particular VIN comes back populated is a weaker matter: manufacturers submit different levels of detail and older vehicles carry less.

The largest group in the whole system

vPIC publishes 144 variables in total, and twenty of them describe the engine — more than any other group, ahead of general vehicle identification and well ahead of everything else.

The set covers displacement in three units, cylinder count, engine configuration, engine model, engine manufacturer, fuel type and secondary fuel type, fuel delivery and injection type, cooling type, stroke cycles, electrification level, and power in both brake horsepower and kilowatts.

That is a genuinely detailed picture, and it comes from the manufacturer’s certification submission rather than from a listing.

Three units, no conversion needed

Displacement is published as litres, cubic centimetres and cubic inches, which removes a common source of error.

Litres is the usual figure for cars. Cubic centimetres is how motorcycles and small engines are described. Cubic inches persists in American classic and performance contexts, where an engine is known by a number that means nothing in metric.

Because all three are published, you can take whichever your parts catalogue or insurer wants without converting and rounding, which is where mistakes creep in.

The field that earns its keep on trucks

Engine manufacturer is dull on a passenger car, where the engine is made by the carmaker, and decisive on a commercial vehicle.

Medium and heavy trucks were frequently offered with engines from several suppliers, and those engines have entirely different parts availability, service networks and reputations. Two identical-looking trucks can be very different to own depending on what is under the cab.

What you actually use it for

Three practical jobs, in rough order of frequency.

Verifying a listing. Engine is one of the fields most often overstated in an advertisement, usually by describing the larger option. The decode is an independent statement of the same fact.

Ordering parts. Catalogues are indexed by displacement, cylinder count and often engine model, so the decode supplies exactly the inputs a parts counter asks for. Our guide to parts by VIN covers the rest of the fitment question.

Insurance and registration. Both frequently ask for displacement, and giving the right figure from the certification record beats guessing from the badge.

What it cannot see

The record is written once at certification and never updated. An engine replaced under warranty, rebuilt, or swapped for something entirely different does not change the decode.

On an older or modified vehicle this is the interesting part rather than a limitation. A decode that disagrees with what is in the engine bay is not proof of anything improper, but it is always a question — and on a modified car the answer determines whether you are looking at documented work.

When the decode and the car disagree

The engine itself carries a number, stamped or cast into the block, and on a disagreement that number is the authority for what is actually fitted.

Locations vary by manufacturer — commonly on a machined pad on the block, near the bell housing, or on a plate on the head. It is frequently dirty and hard to read, and it is worth cleaning and photographing rather than squinting at.

A block number that has been ground, filled or re-stamped is a serious finding and changes the transaction entirely.

The check that outranks the specification

Engine identification tells you what you are buying. It says nothing about whether buying it is wise.

Open safety recalls frequently cover engine and fuel-system components and are free to have done. Title brands and the reported odometer history run off the same seventeen characters and decide considerably more than displacement does.
