Golf cart VIN lookup: what the federal register actually holds
Carts below 20 mph carry a serial number, not a VIN. The federal register holds 481 low-speed vehicle codes, and most belong to conversion shops rather than factories.

The short version
- Most golf carts have no VIN at all, and that is not an oversight. A cart whose top speed sits at or below 20 mph is not a motor vehicle for federal purposes, so nothing requires it to carry a seventeen-character number. What it carries instead is a manufacturer’s serial number, and no federal decoder reads one.
- The machines that do carry VINs are low-speed vehicles. The federal definition is precise: four wheels, a top speed over 20 mph but not more than 25 mph, and a gross weight rating under 3,000 pounds. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500 requires that class to carry a VIN built to Part 565, the same rule that governs cars.
- The federal register holds 481 manufacturer codes filed under Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), spread across 467 distinct registered names. That is the population a cart VIN can come from.
- Club Car holds two codes, 5J5 and 52M, both registered in April 2015 and both filed under CLUB CAR LLC. E-Z-GO holds one, 10R, filed under TEXTRON E-Z-GO LLC.
- Yamaha holds no low-speed vehicle code whatsoever. The register returns eleven rows for the name, nine filed as Motorcycle, one as Off-Road Vehicle and one belonging to an unrelated trailer builder. Not one is an LSV. That absence is the answer to the question, not a gap in this page.
- Most of the register is not factories. Of the 481 codes, 343 are six-character small-volume identifiers, and 58 rows carry the word GOLF in the registered company name — conversion shops, rental fleets and dealers who finish a cart into a road-legal vehicle and register as its manufacturer.
- The decode is thin even when it works. A Club Car prefix returns the make, the manufacturer, the vehicle type and a weight class, and then reports that no detailed data is available. There is no descriptor pattern filed for the middle of the number.
- One federal recall makes the whole problem concrete. Campaign 16V136000 recalled converted Club Car Precedent carts because they had no VIN and no certification label, and the remedy was to issue them one.
The phrase “golf cart VIN lookup” contains a buried assumption, and the assumption is usually wrong. It presumes the machine has a VIN. Most golf carts do not, and the reason is not sloppiness on the manufacturer’s part. It is that a golf cart, in the sense of a machine built to move players and clubs around a course, is not a motor vehicle under federal law, and nothing that is not a motor vehicle is required to carry a vehicle identification number.
That single fact reorganises the whole question. It means that a search which returns a wall of decoder boxes is answering a question the searcher did not ask. It means the number stamped on the frame of the cart in the driveway is probably a manufacturer’s serial, which is a different object with a different purpose and no federal register behind it. And it means the useful version of this page is not another input field but a straight account of what the federal register actually holds, where the boundary falls, and what a buyer should do on either side of it.
So that is what this is. Everything below comes from two federal sources read directly: the NHTSA vPIC register, which records who holds each manufacturer prefix and what class of vehicle it covers, and the NHTSA recall database, which records every safety campaign filed against a vehicle sold in this market. Where a source returns nothing, this page says so rather than filling the space.
Where the boundary falls, in the words of the rule
Federal vehicle regulation runs on definitions, and the definition that governs this subject is short enough to quote the substance of. A low-speed vehicle is a motor vehicle that is four-wheeled, whose speed attainable in one mile is more than 20 miles per hour and not more than 25 miles per hour on a paved level surface, and whose gross vehicle weight rating is less than 3,000 pounds.
Read the middle clause carefully, because it is a band rather than a ceiling. A machine has to be capable of more than 20 mph to fall inside the class. Under that threshold it is not a low-speed vehicle and, for federal purposes, not a motor vehicle at all — which is exactly where the standard golf cart sits. Above 25 mph it leaves the class in the other direction and becomes an ordinary passenger vehicle with the full weight of federal standards on it.
Vehicles inside the band get their own safety standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500, and the substance of that standard is a list of equipment the vehicle must carry. Headlamps. Front and rear turn signal lamps. Taillamps. Stop lamps. Reflex reflectors. Exterior mirrors. A parking brake. A windscreen meeting the federal glazing standard. A seat belt assembly at every designated seating position. And, as its own numbered item on that list, a VIN conforming to the requirements of Part 565 — the same Part 565 that governs the number on a saloon, a pickup or a delivery van.
Two federal records confirm the standard is live rather than theoretical. A 2011 recall against Tomberlin, campaign 11V535000, is filed against Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 500 by name and number, titled “Low Speed Vehicles”, over seat belt tags that omitted a date of manufacture. And a Columbia ParCar campaign from the same summer, 11V347000, describes the vehicles it covers as “low speed vehicles and electric golf carts” — the agency itself, in a single sentence, treating the two as different objects.
That is the mechanism by which a golf-cart-shaped object acquires a seventeen-character number. Not because someone decided carts deserved one, but because the machine crossed a speed threshold, became a motor vehicle, fell under a safety standard, and that standard listed a VIN among the equipment it must carry. The number is a consequence of the classification, and the classification is a consequence of the top speed and the weight.
Everything that follows on this page is downstream of that. The register holds codes for the vehicles the rule reaches. It holds nothing for the vehicles the rule does not reach, and a buyer standing in front of a cart with no number is not looking at a defect in the register.
What the register holds under Low Speed Vehicle
Asked for every manufacturer prefix filed under the class, the register returns 481 codes. They are spread across 467 distinct registered names, which means fourteen companies hold two codes each and everybody else holds one. Compared with the entry for a car maker, where a single corporate name will carry dozens of prefixes separated by plant and country, this is an unusually flat population: a very long list of very small registrants.
The countries recorded against those codes reinforce the point. The United States is named on 333 of them. China on 21. South Korea and the United Kingdom on five each, Canada and Italy on four each, Hong Kong on three, and one each for Japan, Finland, Russia and Turkey. The remaining 102 rows carry no country at all — a blank field rather than a foreign country, which is a data-quality fact about the register rather than a fact about the vehicles.
The opening dates tell a different story from the one they tell on a car marque. Here they mostly record when the register itself was populated rather than when a business started building. There are 120 codes dated to 2015, and 2015 is the year that dominates the register’s dates generally rather than anything specific to this class — the same spring appears at the head of almost every make entry we have read. After that the class settles into a steady annual drip: 27 in 2016, 44 in 2017, 16 in 2018, 22 in 2019, 32 in 2020, 29 in 2021, 31 in 2022, 51 in 2023, 37 in 2024, 38 in 2025 and 34 so far in 2026. The oldest row in the file is 1A9596, held by AMERICAN CUSTOM GOLF CARS, INC. The newest at the time of this read is 4S9782, held by STRONG BLUE LLC.
A drip of roughly two to four new codes a month, sustained across a decade, is worth pausing on. This is not a class where a handful of established manufacturers cover the market. It is a class where new registrants keep arriving, and where the number on a machine may well belong to a company that did not exist when the machine’s donor cart was built.
Why most cart codes are six characters rather than three
On a car, the world manufacturer identifier is the first three characters of the VIN and that is the end of it. In this class it usually is not, and the reason matters when you are reading a number off a frame.
Of the 481 codes, only 138 are three characters long. The other 343 are six. That six-character form is the small-volume identifier: where a manufacturer builds few enough vehicles a year, the prefix is extended, and positions twelve to fourteen of the VIN complete the manufacturer identifier instead of forming part of the serial. It is the same convention that fills the register’s trailer and specialist-builder entries, and it dominates here because most registrants in this class are small.
Two practical consequences follow. The first is that on most low-speed vehicles the first three characters do not, on their own, identify the manufacturer — you need positions twelve to fourteen as well, which is precisely the part of a number people skip when they read one aloud or copy it from a listing. The second is that those first three characters are shared. Look down the register and the same short prefixes recur across dozens of unrelated companies — 4C9, 1G9, 4S9 and 1Z9 each head a run of twenty or more different registrants in this class alone — because on the small-volume format the three-character head identifies the pool rather than the builder. A tool that reads only the front of a number cannot name the manufacturer of a small-volume vehicle, and a tool that claims to has guessed.

Club Car and E-Z-GO, exactly as filed
The two names most people mean when they type this search hold very little register between them, and what they hold is worth printing plainly.
Club Car holds two codes: 5J5, registered on 3 April 2015, and 52M, registered five days later on 8 April 2015. Both are filed under the single entity name CLUB CAR LLC. Both are filed under the vehicle type Low Speed Vehicle (LSV). Both record the United States as the country of manufacture. There is no second entity name, no separate filing for a parts or fleet arm and no parent group above the name in this entry.
E-Z-GO holds one code: 10R, registered on 26 June 2015, filed under the entity name TEXTRON E-Z-GO LLC, again as a Low Speed Vehicle and again with the United States recorded. It is one of the few rows in the file carrying a recent update date, 21 August 2026, which records that the registry entry was touched rather than that anything about the vehicles changed.
Cushman is the oddity of the group. Querying the register for the name returns exactly one row, 1CU, registered under CUSHMAN A DIVISION OF OUTBOARD MARINE CORPORATION — and it is filed as a Motorcycle, not as a low-speed vehicle. That is a legacy filing under a corporate name that no longer describes the business, and it is a good illustration of the register’s general character: it records what was filed, when it was filed, by whoever filed it, and it does not tidy itself up afterwards.
Set those three entries against the 481-code population and the shape of the market becomes visible. The best-known cart names in the country account for three codes between them. The other 478 belong to somebody else.
The Yamaha absence, which is the finding
A large share of the searches behind this page are looking for a Yamaha golf car, so it is worth being exact about what the register returns.
Asked for the name, the register returns eleven rows. Nine of them are filed as Motorcycle, under Yamaha Motor entity names, with countries recorded as Japan, Taiwan, the United States or nothing at all. One, JYE, is filed as Off-Road Vehicle under YAMAHA MOTOR CO., LTD. The eleventh belongs to a company called OLD SCHOOL YAMAHA TRAILERS and is filed as a Trailer — a different registrant that happens to share a word with the marque, which is a trap this site has had to flag on several other makes.
Not one of the eleven is filed as Low Speed Vehicle (LSV).
That is a real result and it should be read as one. It does not mean the machines do not exist, and it does not mean a decode will fail on every one of them; a vehicle can be finished and certified by a converter who holds their own code, which is a scenario the next section covers in detail. What it means is that the register holds no low-speed vehicle prefix in this marque’s own name. If you are holding a number from a Yamaha-badged cart and expecting the register to resolve it to Yamaha as a low-speed vehicle manufacturer, it will not, because that filing is not there.
An absence reported honestly is more useful than a fabricated presence. If another page tells you that make holds a low-speed vehicle code, ask which one, and ask which endpoint it came from.
The register is mostly shops, not factories
This is the part of the entry that explains why cart identification confuses people, and it is visible in the registered names.
Of the 481 codes filed under the class, 58 carry the word GOLF somewhere in the registered company name, across 57 distinct names — one company, GRAHAM GOLF CARS, INC, appears twice with two separate codes. Only four of those 58 hold a three-character prefix. The rest are on the six-character small-volume format.
The names themselves say what these businesses are. PETE’S GOLF CARTS, LLC. GOLF CART OUTLET INC. SOUTH FLORIDA GOLF CARTS. LOW TIDE GOLF CART RENTALS LLC. GOLF CARTS LSV HAWAII INC. STREET LEGAL GOLF CARTS. COASTAL GOLF CART RENTALS, LLC DBA COASTAL GOLF CAR SALES. These are not factories. They are dealers, rental operators and conversion shops.
They hold manufacturer codes because of what they do to the machine. A shop that takes a cart, raises its top speed into the band, fits the lighting, mirrors, reflectors, seat belts and windscreen that Standard No. 500 requires, and certifies the result as a low-speed vehicle is the manufacturer of that vehicle in the federal sense. It is the entity that must assign the VIN, apply the certification label, and answer for the vehicle’s compliance afterwards. Which is why the register is full of names that sound like storefronts.
For a buyer this is the single most consequential structural fact on the page. The prefix on a converted cart names the converter, not the company whose badge is on the body. A number resolving to a small business in a coastal town is not evidence that anything is wrong; it is the register working correctly. But it does change who you are relying on. The compliance of that vehicle rests on a shop, and shops close. When the shop is gone, the certification behind the vehicle is a label and nothing more.
Named registrants across the rest of the class fill in the same picture. Taylor-Dunn holds 5ZY. Columbia Vehicle Group holds 5FC and 4C9486, with a separate row for COLUMBIA PARCAR CUSTOM CARTS, INC. on 4C9407. Tomberlin holds 5TS. Star EV holds 1J9342 and 52R. ICON EV holds 1Z9551 and 7R4. Bintelli holds 7R3, Denago 7XB, Kandi USA 5Z8 and 5ZA. Garia is registered as UJG with the country recorded as Finland. Western Golf Car Manufacturing holds 14V, LVTONG USA Golf Cars holds 7LW, and Polaris — a company most buyers would not file under this heading at all — holds 52C and 5AS under it.
The model vocabulary, and the model that is not one
Beyond the prefixes, the register carries a list of model names for each make. It is a vocabulary rather than a catalogue, and on these two makes the vocabulary is revealing.
For Club Car the register holds 24 models. Several of them are ordinary product names: Onward, Cru, the Carryall 510 and Carryall 710, the Villager and Carryall variants explicitly suffixed LSV, The Classic Series, 272 Style, 70E, U21, G21. Several others are not product names at all but administrative labels: Low Speed Vehicle / Class A Club Car, Pan-European Homologated Tractor, Pan-European Homologated Quadricycle, and a plain entry reading Club Car. And several are just seat counts — Two Passenger, Four Passenger, Six Passenger, Eight Passenger — alongside the bare words Passenger and Utility.
For E-Z-GO the register holds 11: the make name itself, 2Five, LSV 800, Liberty, Hauler, Hauler XL, Vista, TOUR, TRUCK, 800, and one entry whose name is the phrase “Currently Not Used”.
That last one is not a joke at the register’s expense; it is a useful warning. A model list is what manufacturers have filed, in the form they filed it. It is not curated, it is not a used-machine catalogue, and it carries placeholders, homologation categories and duplicates alongside real product names. It will confirm that something filed as a Liberty decodes as a Liberty. It will not tell you which battery pack, which motor, which controller, which body or which options a particular machine left the line with, and on a used cart those are the differences that move the money.
What a decode actually returns on a cart prefix
It is worth being blunt about how thin the result is, because the input boxes imply otherwise.
Submit the Club Car prefix on its own and the register returns four useful things: the make, CLUB CAR; the manufacturer, CLUB CAR LLC.; the vehicle type, LOW SPEED VEHICLE (LSV); and a weight class, Class 1A, meaning 3,000 pounds or less. Alongside those it returns an explicit note that no detailed data is available. Every driver-assistance and body-configuration field comes back marked not applicable.
Submit the E-Z-GO prefix and the pattern repeats with one difference: the manufacturer resolves to TEXTRON E-Z-GO LLC, the vehicle type and weight class come back the same, and the make field returns empty.
That is the honest ceiling. The register knows who holds the prefix and what class of vehicle it covers. It does not hold a descriptor pattern for the middle of the number on these makes, so positions four to eight — the block that on a car resolves body style, restraint system and engine — return nothing. Anybody publishing a position-by-position key for a cart VIN has reverse-engineered it from samples, and it is worth knowing that before you rely on it.
The weight class is the one field that does real work. Class 1A confirms the machine sits under 3,000 pounds, which is one of the three tests in the low-speed vehicle definition. It is a small confirmation, but on a machine whose classification is the whole question, small confirmations are what you have.
The recall that makes the conversion problem concrete
Everything above is structure. This is the documented case, and it is the reason this page argues the way it does.
On 4 March 2016, NHTSA recorded campaign 16V136000, filed by a company called Hardkore Karts LLC. The campaign covers model year 2009 to 2013 Club Car Precedent golf carts fitted with a street package. The defect, in the agency’s own summary, is that the vehicles do not have a vehicle identification number, a certification label, or a compliant windscreen, and that they therefore fail to comply with 49 CFR Part 567, the certification rule. The remedy recorded against the campaign is that the company will notify owners and provide a VIN, the correct certification label and the correct windscreen, free of charge.
Read that again with the earlier sections in mind. A conversion shop took carts, sold them as road-capable, and did not do the part that makes the vehicle legal — assigning it a number and certifying it. The vehicles went out into the world looking like low-speed vehicles and lacking the one thing that proves they are. The fix was to issue the numbers that should have been there from the beginning.
This is not an exotic edge case. It is the predictable failure mode of a class in which the manufacturer of record is frequently a small business that bought somebody else’s cart, modified it, and took on a federal obligation it may not have fully understood. If you are buying a converted cart, the question “who assigned this number, and did they file a certification label to go with it?” is not pedantry. There is a federal recall on the books because the answer was nobody.
What the recall record holds for this class
Because the recall database indexes by make and model year, it can be swept: ask it, for every model year from 1998 to 2026, which makes have campaigns filed against them, and see which cart names ever appear.
They do appear, and the pattern is consistent. Club Car shows up against model years 2008 through 2013. Kandi Coco against 2008 to 2010. Taylor-Dunn against 2011, Tomberlin against 2012, Star EV against 2017. Cushman appears at both ends of the span, in the late nineties and again for 2024 and 2025, and E-Z-GO appears for 2024 and 2025 alongside it. Columbia appears too, but with a caution attached that this site has had to give on several makes: some of those Columbia rows belong to Columbia Northwest, a travel-trailer builder, and not to the cart business at all. A name match is not a company match.
Pulling the campaigns themselves is where the class reveals itself. Club Car’s 10V272000, filed in June 2010, covers Carryall 2 LSV and Carryall 6 LSV vehicles whose seat belts met an industry standard rather than the federal one. Its 10V378000, filed that August, covers Villager 2+2 LSV vehicles on which the brake pedal may be missing a load-bearing weld between the brake arm and the pivot shaft. Columbia ParCar’s 11V347000 covers Eagle and Summit machines on which the lower steering yoke may loosen where it attaches to the steering rack and pinion. Kandi’s 11V354000 covers vehicles built without rear side reflectors, filed against Standard No. 108. Tomberlin’s 11V535000 covers AVL low-speed vehicles whose seat belt identification tags lacked a date of manufacture, filed against Standard No. 500 itself. Taylor-Dunn’s 12V587000 covers Trident low-speed vehicles on which the steering wheel shaft may be insufficiently welded to the U-joint. And 17V791000 covers Star EV Sport 4+2 vehicles on which a casting fault may let the tie rod break off the front axle spindle.
The recent cluster is all one manufacturer. Textron Specialized Vehicles filed four campaigns in three years against Cushman Hauler Pro LSV, Cushman Tour LSV and E-Z-GO Liberty LSV machines: 23V817000 in December 2023, for water entering the battery composite module and damaging electrical circuits, with owners advised to park outside and away from structures until repaired; 24V195000 in March 2024, for a dump bed latch that may contact and puncture the top battery in the triple-pack configuration; 24V709000 in September 2024, for a brake linkage rod that may bend under applied force and impair braking; and 25V117000 in February 2025, for side and rear reflectors that reflect insufficient light and fail Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108.
Notice what every one of those campaigns has in common. Each names a low-speed vehicle. Not one names a course cart. The federal recall system reaches these machines through the same door as the VIN requirement: the vehicle crossed into the regulated class, so it became recallable. A cart below the threshold sits outside that system entirely, and no free federal recall lookup will ever return anything for it. When there is no VIN: what the number on the frame is instead
Most people arriving at this subject are holding a number that is not a VIN, and the first useful thing anyone can tell them is what it is.
A cart below the federal threshold carries a manufacturer’s serial number. That number is real, it is useful, and it belongs to the manufacturer’s own scheme rather than to any federal standard. It typically encodes the production sequence and, on most makers, the model year in some form. It is what a dealer uses to order the correct parts, what a service department uses to look up a machine, and what a manufacturer would use to identify a batch.
What it is not is a VIN. It will not be seventeen characters. It has no check digit at position nine, so there is no arithmetic test that catches a transcription error. It resolves in no federal register, which means submitting it to a decoder returns nothing and that result tells you nothing about the machine. And critically, it is not in the national title system, so there is no title chain, no brand history and no odometer record keyed to it.
The practical rule is short. Find every plate and stamping on the machine and photograph all of them rather than transcribing them. Count the characters on each. Seventeen characters with a plausible layout is a VIN and is worth running. Anything shorter is a serial, and the correct next step is the manufacturer or a dealer, not a decoder. Where a machine carries both — which happens on conversions, because the donor cart’s serial does not disappear when a converter adds a VIN — record both, and expect them to be unrelated numbers that do not resolve to each other.
Treat a plate that has been drilled off and reattached, a label that looks newer than the panel around it, or fresh paint around a stamping as a finding rather than as wear. On a class of machine where a small business is often the manufacturer of record, the physical evidence around the label carries more weight than usual.
Titling, registration and the state layer
Federal law decides whether the machine needs a VIN. State law decides almost everything else, and it varies more here than on any road vehicle.
Broadly, a certified low-speed vehicle with a VIN is titled and registered like a vehicle in most states, and a golf cart below the threshold is either registered under a separate local scheme, permitted on specified roads by ordinance, or not registered at all. Some jurisdictions run cart permit systems tied to a community. Some allow carts on roads under a stated speed limit. Some distinguish sharply between a cart and a low-speed vehicle in their statutes and treat the two as different objects with different privileges.
The consequence for a buyer is the same one that catches people on off-road machines: the rule that binds you is the rule where you will register the thing, not the rule where the seller is standing. A seller who tells you no title is needed may be entirely correct about their own county and entirely irrelevant to yours. Get a bill of sale in every case, with whatever number the machine carries written on it, both parties’ details and the date. On a machine that may never have had a title, that document is the whole of your ownership evidence, and it costs nothing.
Theft, and the checks that actually return something
Carts are stolen heavily and recovered poorly, for reasons that follow directly from everything above. They are light. They are stored outdoors, in cart barns and open garages, more often than in locked buildings. A large share of them are not registered anywhere. And when the identifying number is a manufacturer’s serial rather than a VIN, there is no national database in which a stolen-vehicle flag could even be recorded.
Where a machine does carry a VIN, the free checks are worth running before anything else, because either can end a purchase from the kitchen table. Where a machine carries only a serial, accept that those checks are unavailable and weight the rest of your diligence accordingly: where the seller keeps it, how long they have had it, what documentation came with it when they bought it.
A seller who will not let you photograph the plate, or who wants to meet somewhere other than where the machine is kept, has told you something. On a class of vehicle with this little paper behind it, that signal is worth more than it would be on a car.
The retrieved record, where one exists
The decode is the cheap part and, on this class, the thin part. The record is the retrieval — the title chain, the brands, the readings that entered the file at each titling event — and it lives in state and insurer systems keyed to the VIN rather than encoded inside it.
That retrieval exists only for machines that have a VIN and have been titled. For a certified low-speed vehicle that has been registered in a state that titles them, it is worth doing and it is the same exercise as on a car: read the chain rather than the headline, note which states in what order, and treat a machine that has moved quickly across several as a question the seller should be able to answer without hesitating. For a cart with only a serial number, there is nothing to retrieve, and any service claiming to return a history on it is selling you a blank. That is worth saying plainly, because it is the exact point at which money gets spent for nothing on this subject.
The sequence on a used cart
Put in order, on a machine you are actually looking at.
Count the characters first. That single step decides which of two entirely different processes you are in. Seventeen characters means a low-speed vehicle with federal standing; fewer means a cart with a manufacturer’s serial and no federal record.
If it is a VIN, decode it and read what comes back honestly. Expect the manufacturer, the vehicle type and a weight class, and expect the detailed fields to be empty. Confirm the manufacturer the register names against who the seller says built it, and if the register names a conversion shop rather than the badge on the body, ask about the conversion. Then run the free federal recall lookup and the theft check, and pull the title history before you travel rather than after.
If it is a serial, stop looking for a decoder. Take the number to the manufacturer or a dealer for a build and service history, establish what your own state requires to register the machine at all, and put the effort you would have spent on records into the machine itself.
Either way, inspect what no record covers. On an electric cart the battery pack is the largest single component of the value and its condition is a measured property today rather than a fact about the build, so it has to be established by test rather than by assertion. Look at the frame for welds that were not done at a factory, at the steering and brake linkages given how many campaigns in this class concern exactly those parts, and at whether the lighting, mirrors, reflectors and seat belts a certified low-speed vehicle must carry are actually fitted and actually work.
Selling one
The same information runs backwards for a seller, and on this class it is worth more than usual because so few listings contain any of it.
Say which of the two things you are selling. A certified low-speed vehicle with a VIN and a title is a materially different product from a course cart with a serial number, and pricing them as though they were the same loses money in one direction and wastes everybody’s time in the other.
If it is a low-speed vehicle, publish the VIN, photograph the certification label, and name the entity on it. A buyer who has read this far will want to know who the manufacturer of record is, and a seller who volunteers it before being asked is a seller whose other claims get believed. Pull the title history yourself and lead with a clean chain if you have one.
If it is a cart, say so, give the serial, name the make and the model, and be specific about the battery pack — its age, its type and any evidence of its condition. That is the number a knowledgeable buyer asks about first and the one listings almost never contain, and having an answer ready is the cheapest credibility available on the whole machine.
Common questions
Do golf carts have VINs?
Most do not. A golf cart whose top speed is 20 mph or less is not a motor vehicle for federal purposes and is not required to carry a vehicle identification number. What it carries is a manufacturer’s serial number, which is not seventeen characters, has no check digit and resolves in no federal register. Machines that top 20 mph but not 25 mph fall into the low-speed vehicle class, and those are required to carry a VIN.
Can I run a VIN lookup on a golf cart?
Only if the machine actually has a VIN, which means it was built or certified as a low-speed vehicle. Count the characters before anything else. Seventeen characters can be submitted to the federal decoder; a shorter serial cannot, and submitting it returns nothing that means anything. There is no federal lookup for a cart serial number.
What are Club Car’s and E-Z-GO’s manufacturer codes?
The register lists two for Club Car — 5J5 and 52M, both registered in April 2015 under the entity name CLUB CAR LLC — and one for E-Z-GO, 10R, registered in June 2015 under TEXTRON E-Z-GO LLC. All three are filed under the vehicle type Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) with the United States recorded as the country.
Does Yamaha have a golf cart VIN code?
Not as a low-speed vehicle. The register returns eleven rows for the name: nine filed as Motorcycle under Yamaha Motor entity names, one filed as Off-Road Vehicle, and one belonging to an unrelated trailer builder whose registered name contains the word. None of the eleven is filed under Low Speed Vehicle. That is what the register holds; it is an absence, not a figure we are withholding.
Where is the VIN on a low-speed vehicle?
On the certification label the manufacturer is required to apply, and frequently stamped on the frame as well. The safe method is to find every plate and stamping on the machine, photograph each one and count the characters, rather than transcribing a number from one location and assuming it is the VIN. Where a converted cart carries both a donor serial and an assigned VIN, expect two unrelated numbers.
Why does the VIN resolve to a dealer instead of the cart’s maker?
Because the shop that converted the cart into a road-legal vehicle is the manufacturer in the federal sense, and it assigned the number. That is the register working correctly, not an error. Of the 481 codes filed under the class, 58 carry the word GOLF in the registered company name, and most of those are dealers, rental operators and conversion shops rather than factories.
Are golf carts covered by federal safety recalls?
Low-speed vehicles are; carts below the threshold are not. Every campaign in this class names a low-speed vehicle model — Club Car’s Carryall and Villager LSVs, Cushman’s Hauler Pro LSV and Tour LSV, E-Z-GO’s Liberty LSV, Taylor-Dunn’s Trident LSV, Tomberlin’s AVL. A course cart sits outside the recall system, and the free federal lookup will never return anything for it.
What does a decode actually tell me about a cart?
Less than the input boxes imply. On the Club Car prefix the register returns the make, the manufacturer name, the vehicle type and a weight class of 3,000 pounds or less, and then reports that no detailed data is available. The descriptor block in the middle of the number returns nothing on these makes, so there is no factory-sourced key to battery, motor, body or options.
Is a street-legal converted cart the same as a low-speed vehicle?
Only if it was certified as one. A conversion that raises the top speed without fitting the equipment Standard No. 500 requires, and without a VIN and certification label, is not a compliant low-speed vehicle whatever the seller calls it. Campaign 16V136000 exists precisely because converted Club Car Precedent carts were sold with no VIN and no certification label, and the recall remedy was to issue them.
Can a VIN check tell me the condition of the battery pack?
No. Pack condition is a measured property of that pack today, not a fact about how the machine was built, and no decode of any VIN by any tool returns it. On an electric cart it is the largest single component of the value, so it has to be established by inspection or test on the machine in front of you.
