Hyundai VIN Decoder: Fifteen Codes, and One Surprise

There is no Hyundai VIN decoder in the sense the search implies. NHTSA runs one decoder for every manufacturer selling into the United States, it is free, and a Hyundai VIN goes into it exactly as a Ford does. What is specific to Hyundai is the register the decode reads its first three characters from. It is a small set, and it has more in it than a car buyer expects — including a country, a steel company and two trailers.

Hyundai holds 15 world manufacturer identifiers in NHTSA’s register, covering 4 countries of manufacture, against 40 models the decoder holds for the make. A WMI is registered by a corporate entity rather than by a brand, so the count reflects how the group organises its registrations rather than how many vehicles it builds — which is why some familiar names return only one.

Fifteen codes against forty models

NHTSA holds 15 world manufacturer identifiers under the Hyundai name. Those first three characters are assigned centrally rather than chosen, which is what makes them the most reliable part of the decode: the manufacturer, the country and the class of vehicle come back on almost any VIN, even when the detailed fields are thin.

The 15 divide across four vehicle types. Passenger cars and multipurpose passenger vehicles take 5 codes each, trucks 3 and trailers 2. Against them, vPIC holds 40 models for the make, covering every year it reaches rather than the current line-up.

By the standards of this register that is a compact, modern set. Hyundai has no bus codes and no incomplete-vehicle codes in it at all, which is a fair reflection of a manufacturer that sells finished passenger vehicles rather than chassis to bodybuilders.

Four countries, and the one nobody expects

The countries recorded against Hyundai’s codes are South Korea, the United States, Mexico and Singapore.

The first three surprise nobody. Singapore is the interesting one: PFD is registered to the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre in Singapore and filed under multipurpose passenger vehicles. A manufacturer code against a research and innovation site is a genuinely unusual entry, and it is the sort of thing the register records without comment.

The rest sits where you would expect. KMH, KPH, KMT, KMF, KM8 and KMU are Hyundai Motor Co in South Korea. 5NP, 5NT, 5NM, U5Y and 145 are recorded against the United States, and 3H3 against Mexico. As always, read the plant fields the decode returns rather than reasoning from the first character alone.

Seven registrants, and not all of them build cars

A world manufacturer identifier is issued to a legal entity rather than to a badge, and Hyundai’s seven registrants describe the group rather than the showroom.

Hyundai Motor Co holds the Korean codes. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama holds 5NT and 5NM. Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America holds 7YA. Hyundai de Mexico holds 3H3. Then the two that catch people out: Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center Inc — HATCI, an engineering and technical operation — holds two passenger car codes, U5Y and 5NP, and Hyundai Steel Industries holds a trailer code.

So a decode returning a manufacturer name you do not recognise from any advertisement is not a fault. It is the register naming the company that holds the code, which is frequently not the company whose name is on the boot lid.

The two trailer codes

3H3, registered to Hyundai de Mexico, and 145, registered to Hyundai Steel Industries in the United States, are both typed as trailers.

That matters for one practical reason. If you decode a VIN and the vehicle type comes back as Trailer, the road-vehicle assumptions you were about to make do not apply: no engine, no transmission, no fuel economy, and a weight rating that governs what may be towed rather than what may be driven. It also shows how little the badge on a code tells you about the object. A group that makes steel registers trailers; the same corporate name covers both.

A register with dates on it

Each code carries the date it was entered, and Hyundai’s spread across the whole span of the modern register.

The core set — KMH, KM8, 5NP, 5NM and U5Y — dates from 2015. KPH and both trailer codes follow in 2016, KMF in 2017, KMT in 2018. Then the recent ones: KMU in 2020, 5NT in 2021, KME in 2022, the Singapore code in 2023 and 7YA in 2024.

The practical consequence is that the newest codes attach to cars that are only now reaching the used market. If you decode a very recent Hyundai and the manufacturer name is one you have never seen, check the registration date before you conclude anything is wrong — the register grows, and the entity that built your car may be younger than the model.

What the decode describes, and where it stops

Two of the 15 codes, KME and 7YA, have no country recorded. The field is empty, not incorrect, and that distinction is the single most useful thing to understand about vPIC output: a blank means the manufacturer submitted nothing for that variable, not that the vehicle lacks the feature.

The larger limit is what the record is. It describes the vehicle as built and certified, and it is never updated. A Hyundai with a replacement engine, a rebuilt front end or a flood in its history decodes identically to one straight off the line.

Which is why the decode is the cheapest part of the job and not the part that decides anything.

The three records that decide a used Hyundai

Specification is what the advertisement already claims. The records worth pulling are the ones the seller cannot edit.

Open safety recalls are free to have carried out at a franchised dealer and are frequently outstanding, because the notice follows the registered owner and not the car. Is there a Hyundai VIN decoder?
