Most manufacturer pages have to explain a sprawl of codes, corporate entities and assembly countries. This one is the opposite, and the simplicity is genuinely useful: there are two codes, and knowing which one you are holding tells you something immediately.

Two codes, and the split between them

The federal register holds two three-character manufacturer identifiers for this marque. One is filed against passenger cars. The other is filed against multipurpose passenger vehicles — the classification that covers what a buyer would call an SUV.

Both begin with the same two characters, which encode the country and the manufacturer. They differ only in the third, and that third character is doing the entire job of separating a sports car from a sport utility.

That is genuinely unusual at this scale. Larger makers commonly register through a dozen or more entities named for the plants they operate, which is why a decode on those makes returns a company name most owners have never heard of. Here the name that comes back is the name on the car.

It also means the country character is uninformative in a way it is not elsewhere. On a maker with plants across several continents, that character tells you where a specific vehicle was assembled and can differ between two otherwise identical cars. Here it does not vary, so it carries no information beyond confirming what you already knew.

The specification problem, which is the real one

Everything above is about identification, and identification is the easy half. On this marque the hard half is specification, and the identifier does not carry it.

These are cars ordered rather than bought off a lot. Two examples of the same model and year can differ by a very large sum in original list price depending on what was specified, and almost none of that is encoded in the seventeen characters. Seats, brakes, suspension, exhaust, wheels, packages, paint to sample — the number is silent on all of it.

Which inverts the usual advice. On an ordinary used car the decode is the cheap eliminating check and the specification is a detail. Here the decode confirms what the car is in about a minute, and then the genuinely valuable document is the manufacturer’s own build record, obtained from the manufacturer, which lists what was actually fitted when the car was assembled.

Anybody selling one of these seriously will either have that document or will know how to get it. A seller who cannot produce it, on a car where the specification is most of the value, is asking you to take the specification on trust.

The narrowness is helpful. It means model-level research is actually tractable here in a way it is not on a maker with a hundred and sixty-eight models, and it means the enthusiast and specialist knowledge for any given model is deep rather than thin.

It also means the decode moves you a shorter distance than it does elsewhere. Knowing the model on a marque with fifteen of them narrows things less than knowing it on a marque with a hundred, because you probably already knew roughly what you were looking at from the shape.

Internal type codes, which are not in the number and are what enthusiasts use

Anybody researching one of these quickly runs into a second numbering system: the manufacturer’s own internal type designations, which owners and specialists use constantly to distinguish generations of the same model.

Those are not encoded in the identification number and no federal tool returns them. They are the factory’s internal project references, they matter enormously to buyers because generations differ substantially in engineering and in value, and the only way to establish which one you are looking at from the number is to decode the model year and body and then map that to the generation using marque knowledge.

This trips people up because the two systems get talked about interchangeably in forums and listings. A seller quoting a type code is telling you something real and useful; a decoder returning a model name is answering a different question. Neither is wrong and they do not substitute for each other.

The practical consequence is that this is one of the makes where the free federal decode leaves you with the least, relative to what you need to know. It confirms the car is what it says it is, and then the research moves to marque sources.

What owners actually report, which is a separate record again

Alongside recalls there is a complaints archive, and it is worth reading because it captures problems that never became campaigns.

That distribution is more informative than the total. A count on its own says little, because complaint volumes track how many of a model were sold as much as how reliable it was. What the concentration shows is where owner attention went, and a cluster in one component area is a reasonable prompt to ask an inspector to look there specifically.

Two cautions on reading it. Complaints are unverified reports by owners rather than confirmed defects, and a component with a live recall campaign attracts complaints partly because owners have been told to look at it. Treat the shape as a research prompt rather than a verdict.

What the records do and do not hold on a car like this

The modification question, which matters more here than almost anywhere

Cars in this segment are modified more often than average, and the identifier is completely blind to it.

A decode returns the engine and drivetrain the factory filed, indefinitely. If a car has been through a tuning house, had forced induction altered, had suspension or brakes changed, or had a different engine fitted entirely, the record does not move. It goes on describing a vehicle that no longer exists in that configuration.

That is not automatically a problem — well-executed work by a reputable specialist can be neutral or positive for value — but it is something to establish from the car and the invoices rather than the paperwork. On this marque the difference between documented specialist work and undocumented work is a very large amount of money.

The related question is whether the engine currently fitted is the one the car was built with, which on an older example is a genuine value question. Where the checks belong in a purchase at this level

The order is the same as for any car and the weighting is different.

Run the free checks first, because they cost nothing and they eliminate. Then the paid record, because on a car worth a large sum the cost of the report is trivial against the cost of a brand you did not know about. Then the build documentation from the manufacturer, because specification is value here. Then an inspection by somebody who knows the marque specifically rather than a general workshop.

That last point is worth pressing. A general pre-purchase inspection is competent at general things and will not know what to look for on a particular engine or gearbox with a known characteristic. Low mileage, which is the claim to test hardest here

Cars in this segment are frequently sold on the strength of how little they have covered, and that makes the odometer the number under the most commercial pressure.

A garaged example with genuinely low distance is a real thing and commands a real premium. So does a car whose reading has been helped. The identifier does not distinguish them, and neither does looking at the car, because low apparent wear is exactly what both look like.

What distinguishes them is the sequence of readings filed over the vehicle’s life. A figure that climbs steadily and then stops climbing, or a reading lower than one recorded earlier, is visible only when the readings are set out in order. That is a records question and it is the single most valuable thing a paid history check does on a car sold this way.

Two supporting checks cost nothing. Service documentation carries dated readings independently of the titling record, so a stack of invoices is a second sequence to compare against. And the physical wear points — the driver’s seat bolster, the pedal rubbers, the steering wheel rim — are consistent with distance in a way that is difficult to fake convincingly across all of them at once.

Why the record is worth more here in absolute terms

The arithmetic of checking a car changes with its value, and it changes in the buyer’s favour.

A title brand imposes a discount that is roughly proportional to what the car is worth. On an ordinary saloon that discount is a few thousand at most; on a car in this segment it can be a very large sum indeed. The cost of finding out, meanwhile, is the same in both cases — a few pounds for a record and a few hundred for an inspection.

So the case for spending on checks gets stronger as the car gets more expensive, and it gets stronger faster than most buyers assume. Somebody comfortable spending a large sum on the car itself and reluctant to spend a fraction of a per cent of it on establishing what the car is has the proportions backwards.

The same logic applies to the inspection. A specialist who knows the marque costs more than a general workshop and is worth it here, because the failure modes that matter are model-specific and expensive, and a general inspection will not know to look for them.

Cars brought in from other markets

This marque turns up as a private import more often than most, because desirable specifications were sometimes sold in one market and not another. That changes what the records can tell you.

A car originally sold outside the United States has no American titling history for the period before it arrived. The federal file will be empty for those years, and an empty file is a gap rather than a clean result — it means the records do not cover that period, not that nothing happened in it.

What matters instead is the import documentation and whether the vehicle complies with American requirements, both of which are paperwork questions with paperwork answers. A properly imported car has a file; one that does not is a problem that gets more expensive the longer it goes unresolved.

The checks that protect a buyer also protect a seller, and on a car of this value they are worth running before the advert goes up rather than during a viewing.

Pull the record on your own vehicle first. A brand you had forgotten, a lien you believed was discharged, or a filed reading that does not match your own understanding will all surface during a careful buyer’s research. Discovering it yourself, with time to find the paperwork that explains it, is a completely different conversation from being confronted with it on a driveway.
