Tire Size by VIN: The Placard Beats the Lookup

Tire size is not in the federal record

NHTSA’s vPIC decoder is the system behind most VIN lookups, and it publishes its full variable list — 144 of them. Searching that list for tire size returns nothing.

Two variables come close enough to cause confusion. There is a tyre pressure monitoring system type, which records whether the vehicle uses a direct or indirect TPMS. And there is a wheel size, in inches, which is the diameter of the wheel rather than the specification of the tire fitted to it.

Neither is a tire size. A tire size is a compound specification — section width, aspect ratio, construction, rim diameter, load index and speed rating — and only the rim diameter overlaps with anything vPIC holds.

Why no VIN system could sensibly hold it

Even setting aside what vPIC happens to record, there is a structural reason this lookup would be misleading if it existed.

Tires wear out. A car that has covered any distance is on at least its second set, possibly its fourth, and the person who fitted them chose the size. Plus sizing, downsizing for winter tyres, a switch to a different load rating for towing, or simply whatever the tyre shop had in stock — all of these are ordinary and none of them updates any federal record.

So a VIN-derived tire size would be a statement about the vehicle’s first day rather than about the vehicle in front of you. On a used car, which is the only kind this site is about, that is the wrong question answered confidently.

The placard is the authority

Every vehicle sold in the United States carries a tyre and loading information placard, usually on the driver’s door jamb, sometimes on the door edge or the B-pillar. It is a federal requirement and it is specific to the vehicle it is attached to.

It gives the original equipment tire size front and rear, the recommended cold inflation pressures, the spare tyre size if there is one, and the vehicle’s occupant and cargo weight limit.

That placard is the correct answer to “what tires does this take”, and it is free, immediate and attached to the car. A lookup site cannot improve on it.

One important consequence: the placard beats the tire. If the size moulded into the sidewall disagrees with the placard, somebody has fitted a different size, and the placard is what the vehicle was engineered around. That mismatch is itself worth knowing about, because it affects speedometer accuracy, load capacity and sometimes the stability control calibration.

What the VIN contributes

The VIN is not useless here — it is upstream of the answer rather than the answer.

Fitment depends on the exact model, model year, trim and drive type, because a base car and a sport trim of the same model routinely take different wheels and tires. A VIN decode establishes those precisely, which is what a parts counter needs in order to give you the right answer.

When the tires on the car are the story

On a used car the tires are worth reading as evidence rather than just as a specification.

Four matching tires of the same make, model and roughly equal wear suggest a car that has been maintained as a whole. Four different brands with visibly different tread depths suggest one replaced at a time, at the cheapest available price, which tends to correlate with the rest of the maintenance history.

A size that does not match the placard is worth asking about directly. So is uneven wear across a single tire, which points at alignment, suspension or a bent component rather than at the tire.

The lookups that do work

If you are checking a car before buying it, the VIN answers several questions properly, and they matter more than fitment.

It confirms the vehicle is the year, model and trim advertised. It surfaces open safety recalls, which are free to fix and are the highest-value check available. And it is the key to the title record and reported mileage history.
