The phrase “VIN decoder” suggests a tool built for one marque. No such thing exists. The number stamped into a towable built under this name is constructed to the same federal standard as the number on a saloon car or a delivery van, and the register that turns its first three characters into a manufacturer is the same register that does the job for everything else on the road.
What is worth reading instead is the register entry itself, and this one is unusually easy to check. Some makes covered on this site hold thirty or forty codes, and the honest treatment there is to count and group them because printing the list would fill a screen without teaching anything. Under this name there are five codes. The entry fits in a small table, so rather than describing it we can show it and then work through what each column actually means.
There is a second reason this entry repays attention. Five manufacturer codes sit against a model roster of exactly one name in the federal decoder, and the one name is the make name itself. That is not a fault in the data and it is not a gap somebody forgot to fill. It is a straightforward statement about what the federal system was built to record, and about how much of a buyer’s actual question a decode is going to answer. The rest of this page is the register read line by line, with the limits pointed at rather than smoothed over.
One federal system reads every VIN, this make included
The vehicle identification number is a federal standard, and its layout does not change with the badge on the front. Positions one to three are the world manufacturer identifier, assigned to the legal entity that issues the numbers. Positions four to eight are a descriptor block the manufacturer designs for itself. Position nine is a check digit, computed arithmetically from the other sixteen characters. Position ten carries the model year. Position eleven identifies the assembling plant. The final six are the serial.

The point is worth making plainly because it changes what you should expect from a lookup. A decoder does not hold a private key to this make. It resolves the same public fields for this make that it resolves for every other, and where the federal system is thin the decoder will be thin too. No amount of searching for a brand-specific tool changes what is in the underlying record.
Five codes, and the entry printed rather than summarised
A VIN opens with three characters the manufacturer does not choose for itself. They are assigned centrally, published in full, and they identify the entity that filed for the right to issue numbers. Under this make there are five of them: 1MW, 1TC, 1TE, 1TX and 1TJ.
That table is not an excerpt. It is the entry. Every code the federal register holds under this name is on it, together with the class each one is filed under and the month the filing was recorded. There is no continuation and nothing has been dropped for reasons of space. Two things about the codes themselves are visible without any interpretation. First, all five begin with the same character. Second, four of the five share their first two characters, with only the third character separating 1TC, 1TE, 1TX and 1TJ from one another. That is a fact about how the codes were issued in sequence. It is not a statement about what any individual towable is or where it was put together.
What the leading character does not do is tell you which building a vehicle was assembled in. That is a separate question and the register does not answer it, on this make or any other.
Every code filed as Trailer, and what that word means
The vehicle type column looks like a description and is not one, so it is worth taking slowly. Every world manufacturer identifier on the register is filed under a vehicle type. On this make there is no split to describe: all five codes carry the same one, Trailer.
That word is not an adjective somebody chose. It is a category out of the federal motor vehicle safety standards, and those categories exist because the rules that apply to a vehicle depend on which one it falls into. In that scheme a trailer is a motor vehicle designed for carrying persons or property and for being drawn by another motor vehicle. The defining test is that something else provides the motive power and the tow. It is not a test about size, price, fit-out, how many people can sleep in it, or what an owner would call it in conversation.
So a decode that returns “Trailer” in the vehicle type field has not failed, has not guessed, and has not been fed the wrong number. It is reporting, accurately, which regulatory bucket the manufacturer code sits in. It is answering the question “what class was this prefix filed under?” and it is answering it correctly. It is not answering “what would you call this thing?”, and it was never built to.
Counted across the forty-four make entries on this site that hold codes of their own, eleven file every one of their codes under a single vehicle type. This is one of them. That uniformity is convenient in one narrow way: there is no chance of two codes in this entry disagreeing about the class, so the vehicle type field will return the same word whichever of the five prefixes a number opens with. It is also the reason the field carries so little information. A column with one value in it distinguishes nothing.
What a single-class entry does and does not settle
Because the entry is uniform, the class field tells you something about the codes and almost nothing about the specific vehicle. It confirms the category the prefix was filed under. It does not distinguish a small towable from a large one, one layout from another, or one build year from the next.
This matters most when the thing in front of you is not towed at all. The register holds no code under this name filed under any class other than Trailer. Two registered names across the five codes
The register records, against every code, the name of the entity that filed for it. Under this make there are two such names. COACHMEN INDUSTRIES, INC. is recorded against four of the codes, and COACHMEN RECREATIONAL VEHICLE COMPANY, LLC is recorded against one.
A decode returns that registered name character for character, because reporting the registrant is precisely what the field is for. It is telling you which filed entity is entitled to issue that number. It is not telling you who designed the vehicle, who sold it, who warrants it, or whose name appears in the brochure. Where the registered name contains the make name, as both of these do, the distinction rarely shows. The practical consequence for a buyer is small but real. If you decode a number and the registrant field returns a company name that is not the one you were expecting, check it against the two above before treating it as a problem. Two different answers are correct here, and which one you get depends only on which prefix the number opens with.
One country against every code, and what that field records
The country column carries less than its heading suggests, so here is the correct reading of it. Every one of the five codes has the United States recorded against it. There are no blanks in this entry and no second country.
What that field records is where the registering entity filed. It is a fact about a filing, not a fact about a production line. A code can be registered by an entity in one country and used on vehicles built elsewhere, and the register neither prevents that nor comments on it. Reading the column as an assembly location asks it a question it was not built to answer.
Counted across the forty-four entries on this site that hold codes of their own, fifteen record a single country against all of their codes. This is one of them, and the uniformity means the field will return the same answer on every number that opens with one of these prefixes. If where a vehicle was built matters to you, that belongs to the documentation and to the certification label physically attached to the vehicle, not to this field. The label is worth finding and reading in its own right, and it carries information the register does not.
Two filing dates, four codes and one
Each code carries the date its registration was recorded. Four of the five — 1MW, 1TE, 1TX and 1TC — are dated September 2016. The fifth, 1TJ, is dated April 2019.
Those are registration dates. They are not build dates, not model years, and not the date any vehicle went on sale. A code has to exist before numbers can be issued under it, so a filing date sets an outer boundary and nothing finer than that. It does not tell you that vehicles began appearing in that month, and it says nothing at all about volumes.
Reading the dates as an ordering is legitimate and mildly useful: they tell you that four of the codes in this entry were recorded together and that one came later. That is a fact about the sequence of filings. It is not a fact about the sequence of vehicles, and the two should not be run together. It would be a mistake, for instance, to conclude from a 2016 filing date that nothing carrying that prefix predates 2016, or that the 2019 code marks the arrival of anything in particular. Neither conclusion is available from the data, and this page does not draw it.

Five codes, one model name: the gap that matters
Separately from the manufacturer codes, the federal decoder holds a roster of model names for each make. Under this one, that roster holds a single entry, and the entry is Coachmen. That is the make name serving as the model name, and it is the whole of what the decoder carries.

That is not a reason to skip the decode. It is a reason to know in advance what the decode is for. It confirms the manufacturer prefix, the registrant, the federal class and the model year character, which is genuinely worth having when you are checking a number against an advert or a document.
The middle of the number, and why no key is printed here
Where a genuinely brand-specific decoder would earn its keep is the descriptor block, positions four to eight, and this is the point at which honesty is more useful than another table.
Those five characters are the manufacturer’s own scheme. The federal register does not publish the key to them. What it records is who holds a prefix, what class the prefix is filed under, which country the entity filed in, and the date the code was opened. It does not record what a particular character in position six means on one build as against another, and it does not record how the scheme changed over time.
So this page prints no position-by-position breakdown for this make and no plant-code list, because we hold neither from a source we would stand behind.Position ten, the model year character, is the one part of the middle of the number that is standardised across makes, and the year chart linked above covers it.
The same reasoning applies to the plant character in position eleven. It exists on every number, it identifies the assembling plant, and the register does not publish the table that converts the character into a place. Rather than reprint a table we cannot cite, this page says so and stops.
No parent behind the entry, and no unrelated matches
Two administrative points, both of which can be stated flatly.
First, this make registers under its own name. Some makes covered on this site do not: their codes are held by a parent group, and querying the badge alone returns nothing at all, which is a genuine source of confusion on those pages. That situation does not arise here. The five codes are filed under names that contain the make name, and there is no parent entry sitting behind them holding codes of its own.
Second, a name query against the register returns zero unrelated matches for this make. The register’s name endpoint matches company names as text, so on some makes it returns small builders whose own names happen to contain the word, and counting those in or filtering them out changes the total the make appears to hold. Here the figure is zero. Counted across the fifty-six entries read for this site, forty-three return zero such matches, so this is the ordinary result rather than a remarkable one. What it means in practice is that the five codes above are the complete set with nothing to filter out.
What the decode does not carry
Everything above concerns what the register holds. This section concerns what it does not, and for anyone about to hand over money it is the more important half.
A VIN decode does not carry service history. It will not tell you when the vehicle was last looked at, what was done, whether it was done by somebody competent, or whether anything was skipped.On a towable this bites harder than it might on a car, because so much of what goes wrong is about how the thing was stored, sealed and maintained rather than about how it was built.
A decode does not carry condition. It resolves what the vehicle was recorded as when the number was assigned. It says nothing about what has happened since — wear, damage, water ingress, repairs, replacements, or anything fitted, removed or swapped after it left the factory. A number is a fixed record of an origin, not a live description of an object.
A decode does not tell you that a recall was carried out. That distinction is worth drawing out, because the recall lookup and the VIN decode look like the same operation. They are not. What it cannot show is whether a previous owner ever actually presented the vehicle, nor any work done outside the campaign system. Read the campaign text rather than only the status flag.
And a decode does not carry title status, mileage history, or the record of what has been reported against the vehicle over its life. Those live in different systems and have to be asked separately. A free VIN check is a reasonable first pass, and a title check by VIN covers the branding questions a decode is structurally incapable of answering.
Using all of this on a specific vehicle
Put together, the sensible sequence on an individual vehicle is short and mostly does not involve a decoder at all.
Start by checking that the number on the vehicle matches the number on the paperwork, in every character, on every document. Find the number physically rather than taking it from an advert.
Then decode the number and read the result for what it is. The manufacturer prefix will resolve to one of the five codes above and return a registered company name, a federal class of Trailer, and the United States as the country of filing. Expect the company name to be a registered entity rather than the badge. Expect the class to be a regulatory word. Neither is a fault, and neither describes the vehicle.
Then check the model year character against the advert, run the recall lookup, and run the title check. Those three take a few minutes between them and they address the questions that actually decide whether a vehicle is worth pursuing. On a towable, add the weight rating from the certification label to that list, because it governs what you are allowed to tow it with.
Finally, treat everything the decode cannot reach as a documentation problem rather than a data problem. Service records, evidence that recall work was done, and an inspection by somebody who knows this kind of vehicle are what fill the gap. No decoder fills it, and with a model roster of one name the gap here is wider than it is on many makes.
If you are the one selling
The same material is useful from the other side of the transaction. A buyer who runs a decode and gets back a registered company name they do not recognise, or a class field reading Trailer where they expected something more specific, may arrive with a question that sounds like an accusation.
The answer is the one this page has been making throughout: the register records a registrant, a federal classification and a country of filing, and none of the three is a description of the vehicle. Being able to say that calmly, and to point at the entry it comes from, tends to close the question rather than open it.
